NECA debuts first look at Universal Monsters action figure!

Following the announcement that NECA had acquired the license for Universal Monsters back in October, and a product reveal of Universal Monsters Masks to be released through Loot Crate, we could now proudly reveal what we have all been waiting on – NECA’s first Universal Monsters action figure!

Teased earlier today, and most likely in no small part due to this year’s New York Toy Fair being cancelled, NECA took to their social media to tease out an image of their upcoming Frankenstein’s Monster action figure feature the likeness of Boris Karloff. Not surprising, within an hour of posting, NECA’s Instagram post received over 5K likes and 300 comments.

The revelation of NECA producing a Universal Monsters action figure is an absolute game changer within the world of gods and monsters. Following a definitive line of action figures by Sideshow Toys in the late 90s and early 00s, along with Diamond Select’s near definitive follow up in the mid 00s, NECA producing high end and frighteningly detailed action figures is exactly what every monster kid and collector has been hoping.

While not much is currently known in regards to price, availability, and details as to the exact scope of this line, one could easily speculate that we will more than likely see Bela Lugosi as Dracula, Lon Chaney Jr as The Wolf Man, Elsa Lanchester as Bride, and Karloff the Uncanny as The Mummy. Also, is it just me that would love to see NECA deliver the Universal Monsters under their Toony Terrors line?

I would like to mention that NECA also has the license to Hammer Horror. In conclusion, how about we end with a quote from Mark Enright (@mortarheads on Instagram) in response to a question I posed to him during our Universal Monsters Mask Series interview:

Steven Biscotti: This may be more of a question for Randy and the team at Neca, but since we now have a Neca line of Universal Monsters merch, specifically one that caters to the 80’s Universal Monsters audience, could we potentially see a line of six to seven inch action figures based on the Remco line? With sculpts by you? I am a big fan of when DST revisited the now iconic line of Real Ghostbusters figures with full scale action figures. It would only be fitting for Neca to do that with the Universal Monsters Remco line?

Mark Enright: That’s definitely a question for them, but I’d be open to doing any other monster related projects they might come up with. We’ll just have to keep our clawed fingers crossed and hope there will be more Universal Monster goodies from NECA in the future.

“MARK ENRIGHT: THE TALENT BEHIND NECA’S UNIVERSAL MONSTERS MASK SERIES.” from Universal Monsters Universe.

For more information, please follow NECA, along with following Universal Monsters Universe for the latest news regarding the classic monsters.

Are you excited for the upcoming Frankenstein’s Monster action figure by NECA? Are there any classic monsters you’d like to see produced? Let me know in the comments below.

NECA Toys' 2020 showcase includes Back to the Future, Jaws, & Godzilla

At Shacknews, we dig toys and action figures. That means we took a trip to New York Toy Fair earlier this year and looked over all the cool stuff headed to store shelves this year and beyond. And, as it turns out, we found a ton of cool stuff.

During part of our journey through the magical wonderland that was Toy Fair, we happened upon the NECA booth, where we spoke to Social Media Coordinator Peter DeLeon about a sprinkling of some very cool new products.

First up was the Defenders of the Earth set, which will include Flash Gordon, Ming the Merciless, Phantom, Mandrake, and Lothar. Then, DeLeon showed off a new line affectionately titled Toony Classics.Toony Classics are smaller figures based off of characters in animated series and movies, including Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Bob Ross, and Back to the Future (including the DeLorean),

In addition to Toony Classics, the Back to the Future Ultimate figures line will include Marty McFly, Marty in a radioactive suit, both with a series of special accessories and different heads to swap out. There's also a special Jaws line coming. Interestingly enough, this is the first time any toy company will have had the Jaws license to make stars Chief Brody and Quint as well as the shark, eventually.

DC Replicas from Batman: The Animated Series as well as Batman '89, Batman Beyond, Batman: Arkham City, etc. are on their way, too. They all look as though they were pulled straight from the movie and animated series. It's all still a work in progress, but they look pretty awesome already.

Finally, NECA has a line of Godzilla-centric toys on the way as well, including figures from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. There were plenty of awesome sights to be found at the NECA booth, many of which we hope to get our hands on soon. If that sounds fun and interesting to you, you should check out the full video above.

If the toys aren't enough, there's more classic Turtlesgoodness headed your way in comic book form. Original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlescreators Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman are reuniting for a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesstory for the first time in decades. They’re joined by writer Tom Waltz and artist Andy Kuhn. Published by IDW Publishing, Laird and Easterman will work with Tom Waltz and Andy Kuhn on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, which IDW Publishing will release in the summer of 2020. A house ad for the project appears in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #100but provided no further details on the project's premise. Eastman and Waltz worked together on 100 issues of IDW’s ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesseries, which is now the longest-running TMNTcomic ever.

Eastman and Laird created Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesin 1984. By 1993, following the Turtles' unexpected transformation from niche independent comic into a global franchise, the two had a falling out and stopped working together. In 2000, Eastman sold most of his stake in the franchise to Laird and the mirage group. In 2008, Eastman sold his remaining stake. The last time the two collaborated creatively was on the cover to IDW Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles30th Anniversary Special in 2014.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Nickelodeon's current iteration for the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesfranchise, is currently airing.

I really want to know more about those Batman life-size props! Especially the 89 Batarang and grapnel launcher. I have several NECA movie prop repros in my collection, from 300. I'm happy with them and I'm really interested in their take on more Bats stuff.

Im pretty interested in these prop replicas too, Im just not sure where Id squeeze them into my already massive Batman collection with them being such large items. Ideally I want them all but Ithink the animated ones are grabbing me the most.

No idea where Id put these but Id really like to see the price point on them.

And on a personal note this year NECA is making action figures of two of my personal friends who are no longer with us with both the They Live figure of Roddy Piper and finally the release of the Alien figure ofHarry Dean Stanton. Im very much looking forward to adding these tributes to the works of my departed friends and colleagues to my collection and I plan to personally thank Randy for this when I see him in July.

InspectorZartan - 2020-02-26 @ 10:35 pm

So much great stuff from NECA! Finally, after 35 years were getting detailed Back To The Future Action Figures (plusthe animated series which was something I didnt realize I wanted until I saw it in the case), thereturn of the Defenders of the Earth (which is something I never thought Id see and now Im going to need a bigger shelf for my DotE collection), not only was NECA already responsible for the best Turtles figures ever made but they surpassed even that with more cartoon, film, and game Turtles then I ever would have imagined (I just hope I can find them all), and after years and years of Alien figures we are finally getting to wrap up that Nostromo crew. And still doing good stuff with Gremlins and Horror.

Oh and I have to hope that them doing the soft goods Jaws figures might mean there will be an opportunity to do ultimate style figures of them in the future.

I feel the same way, I love the movie figures, the animated ones look great but I have to balance the budget and other things edge them out. I, too, miss their Player Select line they had some great figures with their Dante from Dante's Inferno being one of my favorites. I regret not picking up Kain and Raziel when I had the chance, same thing with their Ryu Hayabusa.

I particularly loved their Bioshock and Gears of War figures. I have Hayabusa and Raziel and love them.(altho they effed up the release of hayabusa and forgot to include his kunais, so im kunai-less but its whatev)They also did some amazing work on Dead Space. The Bioshock ones are my all time favorite of that line tho.

TAKKA AND RAZAR!! AND SUPER SHREDDER!! Those are my definite pick ups. I would love to grab any of the arcade game and cartoon based TMNT stuff but money is limited and that goes to other licenses i desperately want more. The rest they have are great. I do miss their Player Select line they did, seems now they just do alot of predator, alien, tmnt, and movie licenses anymore. I guess their video game stuff kind of got dropped for all that instead. Still they always impress me in what they put out and definitely a favorite toy company of mine.

Neca figures 2020 new

Over the weekend, NECA unveiled five new 8″ clothed action figures inspired by characters from Jaws, Scream, Hatchet, and They Live. The new figures were debuted as part of NECA’s Toy Fair New York product announcements.

Jaws

From Jaws, NECA has announced 8″ clothed action figures of Chief Brody and Quint from the seminal 1975 aquatic horror.

The Chief Brody figure features a licensed likeness of actor Roy Schneider and comes complete with a handful of screen accurate accessories including his revolver, a bucket of chum, and more!

Scream

Fans of the Scream franchise will again be able to get their hands on an 8″ clothed Ghostface figure based on the killer’s appearance in the Scream films.

The poseable figure comes with a tailored robe, hood, and sleeves modeled after the real-life Ghostface costume and features a screen-accurate sculpted mask. The figure also comes with interchangeable hands and accessories like a knife, voice changer, and cell phone.

Hatchet

NECA is giving Hatchet killer Victor Crowley a lot of love this year. At the start of Toy Fair, it was revealed the character would be part of series four of NECA’s Toony Terrors line and now we’ve also learned that he will be getting an 8″ clothed action figure.

The first action figure of the character ever to be created, the 8″ Victor Crowley figure features rooted hair, real fabric overalls, and comes complete with a belt sander and double-sided axe.

8" clothed Victor Crowley action figure with accessories

The 8″ clothed Victor Crowley figure is scheduled to be released in August of this year.

They Live

And last, but not least, They Live fans will for the first time ever be able to get their hands on a John Nada action figure.

The 8″ clothed figure is made to look like “Rowdy” Roddy Piper’s character in the John Carpenter cult favorite They Live. Nada comes with a shotgun, pistol, and sunglasses accessories. (Bubblegum not included.)

NECA’s 8″ John Nada clothed action figure is scheduled to be released this July.

Looking great for the most part! Something about the way the tails are positioned isn't giving me the warm fuzzies about their articulation, but otherwise I'd say NECA is continuing to trend upwards with their figure quality.

Diggin' these. The NECA figures have a been a great alternative to Monsterarts for those of us unwilling to take out a second mortgage. I like that the line is primarily dedicated to just Godzilla designs. They're absolutely not perfect, (except for the '62 figure) but you can clearly tell which versions they represent. I for one think the '89 figure is a much better representation of the suit than their '94 figure. Looking forward to grabbing these.

G. H. (Gman): Really? Don't get me wrong, I love getting lots of different Godzillas, but it's driving me nuts that they won't branch out into other TOHO kaiju. I can only put so many Godzilla figures on my shelf before the lack of variety gets to me. I'd kill for an articulated Titanosaurus or Anguirus of this quality and price range, but the likelihood of that is sadly extremely low.

Gomi: Ninja Monster,
They don't have the rights to other monsters (apart from what they put out from King of the Monsters.)

Which I'm fine with. I love having a long line of Godzillas on my shelf evolving from the original to the present and I hope we get even more. This has never really happened before and I'm glad there's at least one line with this kind of dedication to it.

There's plenty of other lines with other monsters, taking away from the possibility of other Godzilla designs. So I'm more than content with this--In fact I'm grateful it's happening.

G. H. (Gman): Actually they do supposedly have the rights to every iteration of Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, but good luck ever seeing them make any of those. "Not popular enough" my foot.

True, and I am very grateful that there's and affordable line of well-articulated, fairly accurate Godzilla figures in the first place, that's a childhood dream come true.

The problem is that there aren't other lines of this caliber. Aside from SHMA, the only representation for the majority of my favorite kaiju are either immobile statues or barely poseable vinyl figures. NECA is pretty much my only avenue for the type of figures I like, and them refusing to branch out, especially after we got a taste of what that could be like with KOTM, is what frustrates me.

Gomi: Ninja Monster,
It just doesn't bother me at all. I prefer an all Godzilla line of this caliber and am grateful for it. If I want Titanosaurus or King Ghidorah, I'll just look for another line to grab'em.
