How to Crochet a Hotpad - Super Easy Version!

When I first got married, my grandma made me several hotpads. That was one of the things she would make all the grandkids. It seems that she was always working on some when we went to visit.

Over the years, mine have been used and used and used. They finally have worn too thin and I've given them to the kids to use with their toy kitchen.

So I decided to make myself some new ones. The last time I attempted this as a teenager, my hotpads were not square. I must have missed a bunch of stitches or something.

I think I have gotten a little better at crocheting over the years, because this time they turned out fairly well.

picture of a crocheted hotpad set at a diagonal. The words "How to Make a Hotpad {a Super Easy Pattern!!} are displayed across the top of image

Hot pads, potholders, or trivets are handy to have around the kitchen. I keep mine in a drawer right by the stove. When I need to pull something hot out of the oven, they're easy to grab.

I always use them when placing hot pots or pans on the table or counter. This protects the surfaces from burning.

These would be the perfect project for the beginning crocheter. The only stitches are chain and single crochet.

I like them, because you don't have to count {except the chain}. It's perfect for when I'm waiting for my kids at their various activities, or while watching tv.

    hot pad crochet pattern

Because of the way that they work up, they are sometimes called a "magic" hotpad. You begin with a chain and single crochet and you continue around and around. Somehow it magically turns into a double layer square potholder.

Note: I've now added a fabric hotpad tutorial to the blog. It's super easy too, although it looks pretty fancy for only sewing 4 straight seams! This is a great project for beginners - it was my daughter's first sewing project at 4H.   I've also recently added a roundup of a dozen super EASY crochet projects, when you're done making this hot pad head over to find your next easy project.

I had to call my mom to remember how to do this. And after I tell you how, you might laugh that I couldn't remember. It's so easy!!

Note I originally published this post in April of To date, it is one of my most popular posts, so I decided to create a video tutorial to walk you through making the hot pad. Please scroll down to the bottom of the page to view. If you are visiting from Pinterest: Welcome! I'm glad you're here!

Supplies Needed to Crochet a "Magic" Hotpad

    Crocheted Hot Pad Pattern

    1. Chain 42
    2. Single crochet in each chain stitch
    3. When you get to the end, continue around and single crochet in each stitch of the unused side of the chain.
    4. Continue as if you are crocheting in the round, with a single crochet in each single crochet.
    5. Your hotpad will first look like a strip, then it will slowly turn into a boat shape, then "pockets" will begin to form. Once the two sides of the potholder are touching, it's time to finish it off.
    6. Cut off the yarn leaving a inch tail. Fasten off the end of your last crochet stitch with a small knot.
    7. With a large eye needle, sew the two flaps together.
    8. Weave the yarn through a few additional stitches to prevent unraveling and clip off excess.

    Crocheted Potholder Visual Tutorial

For those of us who need a visual, keep reading, I'll walk you through each step. Or skip ahead to the video at the end of the post.

To begin, chain This is going to end up being the diagonal of the hotpad.  For this first one I made, I only did 32 and it's too small.

It's usable, but I like the bigger one I made better. I should have just believed my mom when she told me how many to chain.

beginning steps to crocheting a magic hotpad

Then you will single crochet in each chain until you get to the end.

When you get to the end you will not turn back like you normally do when crocheting something. Instead you will continue around and single crochet in each stitch of the unused side of the chain.

You will continue around and around, as if you were crocheting in the round.

Note of clarification from one of my readers: Do NOT chain one at the beginning of each round as you normally would, just continue one single crochet in each stitch.

A few shots of how it looks along the way.

When you get to the point where your two sides are touching, it's time to finish it off.

2 images of a crocheted pot holder in the final steps of being completed
Measure your yarn so that it is long enough to go from one corner of the hotpad to the other and add several inches. Cut.

Take a needle and sew the hotpad together. I sewed in each stitch. When you get to the end, weave in the yarn through a few stitches. Cut off yarn.

And there you have it! A brand new hot pad.

    Crochet Potholders &#; Double Thick!

The latest free pattern here on the blog &#; THICK Crochet Potholders!

Read below about the inspiration, the perfect yarn I chose, and this beautiful stitch or scroll on down for the free pattern, video and photo tutorial.

Crochet potholders free pattern with video tutorial

Crochet Potholders that are perfect for every kitchen!

I recently discovered a stitch called the thermal stitch and I&#;m in love! In playing with it I figured out an easy way to crochet this stitch simply and easily &#; check out the video tutorial here! I loved the texture and thickness of the stitch and immediately wanted to figure out a way to bring this woven look into my home with it&#;s own pattern.

After designing a WHOLE bunch of wearable pieces over the last couple of years I&#;ve been itching to work on some smaller projects as a creative palate cleanse. My little family also recently moved into a new house with a big gorgeous kitchen that was desperately lacking some warmth and texture. I love cozy spaces with layers of decor and this kitchen was looking a little&#; hallow.

So when I thought about how to bring the thermal stitch to life and what my home could use &#; a crochet potholder felt just right!

Crochet potholders have an i-cord loop for style and easy storage.

Thick crochet potholders utilize a thermal stitch that blocks heat even when cooking with high temperature.

Crochet Potholders make the best gifts

These crochet potholders make great holiday or hostess gifts (they take about an hour to whip up!) &#; I&#;ll be giving sets of these along with my favorite cookbook tied up with a fluffy piece of scrap yarn. Gift giving season never looked so good &#; or was so utilitarian!

Crochet potholders make a great gift when paired with a good cookbook.

    The Yarn

I had quite a few skeins of Lion Brand&#;s new cotton blend yarn Re-Up lying around the house and I loved them for these crochet potholders. The color lineup has some great neutrals to go with my home decor &#; that rustic grey has a bit of heather to it and is so pretty in person!

I held two strands of yarn together for this pattern to make the crochet potholders EVEN thicker &#; no way was I going to burn my hands on those hot pots coming out of the oven! I made one potholder each in the grey and cream colors and then made a third potholder holding one strand of each color together to achieve a marled look. I love the way all three look as a set.

I highly recommend using cotton yarn for this pattern &#; Re-Up is a wonderful option due to the color choice and the price point ($ per skein!) but other cotton yarns would work too. Just make sure to stay away from acrylic or primarily polyester yarns to be sure hot pots and pans don&#;t melt the fibers. Cotton also performs better than other fibers when wet should you encounter a spill!

I used Lion Brand Re-up yarn to make my crochet potholders, but any cotton yarn will do.

    large and small crochet potholder

I&#;m always a little hesitant to call something handmade a pot holder because what if it isn&#;t actually thick enough to protect you? It certainly feels like it is. It is crazy thick, but would I use it as a pot holder?

    The honest answer&#;.. NO.

But that isn&#;t why you think.

It isn&#;t because I don&#;t think it is thick enough to protect my hand from something hot.

I wouldn&#;t use this pot holder to grab something hot because I am CLUMSY!

I require full-on arm coverage when it comes to the oven and other hot surfaces. Anyone else?

If you aren&#;t clumsy or just need a place to set a hot pot then this easy crochet potholder pattern is perfect for you.

How do you crochet a pot holder?

Crochet potholders are a great beginner project since you are just working a basic square. This potholder also has a simple border around it, so it&#;s great for growing your crochet skills.

I originally planned to make a dishcloth out of this yarn. After all, it is called Side Dish and I think Lion Brand&#;s main intention was to produce a thick yarn perfect for quick dishcloths. Since I didn&#;t want a super bulky dishcloth, the moss stitch was a perfect choice.

But as the dishcloth sat on my desk while I wrote up the pattern, it seemed way more suited to be a pot holder. Of course, as with anything you make, use it how you&#;d like!

How quick and easy are these potholders?

These potholders are made with a super bulky % cotton yarn called Side Dish from Lion Brand which comes in 12 happy colors.

Because it is a super bulky yarn, you can easily make a stack of these pot holders in an evening: 14 stitches by 16 rows. They are SUPER QUICK.

BUT unless you snag Side Dish on sale, they will also be a bit spendy. I only got one full size potholder out of each ball of yarn with enough leftover to make a small pot holder or dish scrubber.

I think (don&#;t quote me on this) that you could use triple strands of one ball of sugar and cream and produce a really similar pot holder.

But then you&#;d have to hold 3 strands together&#;.

With Side Dish, it&#;s one ball, one strand, one large hook, and one very quick and easy pot holder.

The yarn itself is soft and fairly easy to work with. I&#;ve worked with at least 5 different balls of it at this point and some of them were wound more tightly than others. The ones that weren&#;t wound tightly, split easily as the yarn is made up of many small strands of soft cotton.

    What about the stitches?

The stitches are simple and definitely beginner friendly once you have the basics of chaining and single crochet down.

The main part of the potholder uses the moss stitch. You&#;ll want to check out the moss stitch tutorial so you can see step by step photos on how to work this easy stitch.

The border of the potholder is work with simple single crochets. You&#;ll love how quickly the entire thing works up!

    The Best Crocheted Potholder

Thank you so much for this post. I have been using this method for my potholders for a long time thanks to the internet crochet community. This stitch or technique is known by various names, the earliest I have found being the Honeycomb Stitch from the early ’s. Other names are Helena’s Potholder Stitch, the Double Thick Stitch, the Siberian Stitch, the Waffle Weave Technique and Thermal Crochet. I am sure there are many more.

I was first introduced to this stitch in a pattern by Priscilla Hewitt, http://priscillascrochet.net/freepatterns.html, who used a ‘Potholder Stitch’ to make oven mitts. http://priscillascrochet.net/free%20patterns/Kitchen/Potholder%20Stitch%20Oven%20Mitt.pdf
Later, she also used this technique in a five piece bath set for the back and facial scrubber. http://priscillascrochet.net/free%20patterns/Bed%20&#;%20Bath/Five-Piece%20Bath%20Set.pdf

I searched for other uses and found a potholder pattern by Sally George, the Double-Thick Potholder. http://web.archive.org/web//http://www.hookandyarn.com/Free_Crochet_Patterns.html, This stitch was presented as another use for a reversible afghan pattern. http://web.archive.org/web//http://www.hookandyarn.com/uploads/afgan.pdf

As I continued my search I found two posts that seem to have become the most frequently referenced although both of the original websites are defunct.

The Double Stitch Potholder Tutorial by Lauri Bolland:
    http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/double-thick-crochet-potholder

Since then there are a number of tutorials and videos posted on the net. They include:
    http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=
    http://siberianstitch.com/tutorial.html
    http://www.thehookandi.com//10/16/technique-thermal-crochet/

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu2GzJHCgwE
    http://maketotebag8.blogspot.com//02/single-crochet-thermal-stitch-tutorial.html

I have found that the basic technique used by Sally George is repeated in most tutorials. The only difference seems to be how the last row can be worked as used in Lauri Bolland’s tutorial. Two important additions of which I am aware are a method to change colors which produces a nice edge (Lauri Bolland) and now Mama’s addition of a loop in the first row that makes that process so simple. Thank you Mama.

I was also very excited to read the posts by Ursula Graf. She seems to have expanded the uses for this stitch. I hope she is able to memorialize her patterns and that she receives the assistance she requires to do so. I would be happy to lend a hand.

    • Thank you for all this information! This is amazing. I know everyone else will also really appreciate all of your history and links.
