PDF Plan package (includes both bridge plans): $
Stone arch bridges have been around since the beginning of recorded history. There are several famous stone arch railroad bridges and viaducts, and were often made with limestone or granite blocks. Some of the earlier stone bridges were simple, single arch bridges meant for pedestrian or animal crossings, and were sometimes made using fieldstones.
Constructed using balsa and basswood. Stone bridge is finished in gray acrylic with Grimy Black Doc O'Briens weathering powder.
* This plan package includes both foot bridges but does not include the cardstock version or Model Builder templates.

Covered railway bridges came about as a plan to extend the life of the structures by protecting the critical components from the elements. As the concept caught on they began appearing throughout the world, but probably the greatest number being in Canada and the United States. Plan - Plate-girder Bridge
PDF Plan package: $ (includes both deck-girder and plate girder bridges)
Plate girder bridges are probably the simplest of railroad bridge styles, but add so much to the realism of any layout because they are so common. Almost any railroad or line you can imagine has at least one style of plate girder bridge.
Plate girder bridges get their name from the components of their simple design. This is also how they get their structural integrity. The vertical plates provide a significant amount of strength, and the girders, or glorified I-beams tie them together to provide their significant load-bearing capacity.
Included are instructions on making simulated "rivets".

PDF Plan package: $
This bridge near Hope B.C. is a common truss type, spanning approximately feet across the Coquihalla River. It is shared by both CN and CP Rail as the route from the Fraser Valley to the west heads north along the Fraser River. This style of bridge is common to just about every popular railroad, and can be found in single spans, or multiple spans resting on concrete piers. The plan can easily be extended for increased span. This N Scale version was constructed using 1/8" I-beam from Northeastern Scale Lumber Co.

- We build model railroad truss, girder, deck bridges, and trestle decking for HO, On30, S and O scale model railroads with a very dense naturally black wood. I took Plastruct's bridge kit and drastically modified it making it from a through truss bridge to a deck truss bridge. This change required me to re-draw the entire bridge in Coreldraw, print it out in scale () and build the bridge directly over the plans using T-pins like building a model airplane. My work bench's top surface is Homasote which is a great surface to hold T-pins. I tape the plans to the Homasote and then cover with some polyethylene film so nothing sticks to the plans. I used the H-, I- and T-Beams that came with the plastruct kit, and also used the sheet ABS for the gusset plates. Instead of embossing rivets into the plates, I used Archer Decals rivets which worked nicely. I used Plastruct's instructions on handling the joinery details, but applied them to my plans.
To cut the gussets, I printed out the gusset patterns on plain paper, temporarily adhered it to the ABS and used a scissors to cut them out. Gluing gussets to the bridge was all done with Bondene liquid plastic cement.
The top and bottom longitudinal members have to be continuous pieces if possible. The top rail is Ross Bridge Rail with the guard rails included. The design of the deck truss has another set of longerons directly under the running rails.
Archer Decals applied. The gussets actually comprised all the primary strength of the build. The individual joints of the members to each other was secondary.
The twin bridges are very strong and could probably each support 50 pounds or more. A 12 pound loco going across causes no deflection at all.
Here's a drawing I made. Also attached is a full-size PDF of the same. You can print it out on multiple pieces of paper and tape them together to make the building pattern.

The trains are probably the most impressive part of O scale. A long freight train may weigh as much as 75 pounds. Like their prototypical counterparts, O scale trains need time to slow down and stop, requiring that the engineer think ahead. With this much mass, a sudden stop such as running into a dead track, or a sudden start like turning the power on with the throttle open, can lead to expensive damage to cars and locomotives. Since a tumble to the floor can be very destructive to a brass locomotive, we have protected most of the track with clear plastic barriers to keep derailed equipment from falling.
Unlike some of the smaller scales, there isnt a whole lot of O scale equipment available at your local hobby shop. Many of the cars and locomotives you see here are highly detailed brass models, or built up from craftsman type kits. As the hobby grows, more true scale equipment is becoming available, particularly 3 rail equipment that can be easily modified to run on our 2 rail layout. Many of our models were built from scratch and have given us 30 or 40 years of service.
Most of our membership's primary interest is in standard gauge. Although Southern Pacific represents our single largest unit of equipment, Santa Fe, Milwaukee Road, Pennsylvania, Great Northern, and Western PacificC&NW, and several other heralds are frequently found on the layout. Standard gaugers are an eclectic group.
Most of the model trains are owned by the individual members, although there is some club equipment that has been donated over the years. All of the structures, buildings, bridges and scenery are property of the club.
Some trains you might see:
Freight trains Several different freight trains can be spotted around the railroad. Models of older trains, dating from the s through the mid s can be identified by the walkways extending along the car roofs. In the early days of railroading these allowed brakemen to walk along the top of the train to set the brakes by hand. This practice was eventually outlawed, for obvious safety reasons. Older trains will also have a caboose, something we havent seen on most real trains since the mid s. More modern freight trains run without a caboose, instead they have an electronic flashing device attached to the last car which monitors the air pressure in the trains brake system. Modern trains are often made up of inter-modal cars carrying containers or trailers, large boxcars, auto-racks, covered hoppers and tank cars.
Passenger trains A variety of passenger trains make an appearance on the O scale railroad, from modern Amtrak trains pulled by the latest and fastest electric locomotives, to old time heavyweight Pullman trains pulled by steam locomotives. Several version of the Hiawatha may be seen. The Hiawatha ran between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Chicago on the Milwaukee Road at scheduled speeds of almost mph, pulled by a streamlined steam engine! Later versions were pulled by Union Pacific Diesels and painted in Union Pacific Yellow and Gray. We have a modern Amtrak Superliner pulled by three Amtrak locomotives. The Broadway, a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train can be recognized by its consist of maroon Pullman cars and doubleheaded K-4 Pacific type steam engines. The Empire Builder is a long green and orange Great Northern train pulled by a string of diesels. Another couple of trains making an occasional appearance are the City of San Francisco and the Southern Pacific Daylight. These models were commissioned by the real railroads for the Chicago Worlds Fair. Over 60 years old, the models still provide reliable service. Also keep an eye out for the Grand Canyon, a famous Santa Fe Railway train. We recently () received a donation from the Carl Dean estate of a 13 car Northern Pacific "North Coast Limited" train with ABBA F3 diesel engines. This train also ran on the Halleck layout. You may not see all of these trains, as our members bring them home and rotate others onto the layout over the course of our run season.
