How to Paint a Wolf with Acrylics

About the Artist

Rod Lawrence graduated with a fine arts degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Michigan in 1973. Since then he has been working full time as a professional artist.

Lawrence has exhibited in many group and one-man shows, including the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s “Birds in Art” and “Wildlife: The artist’s View” shows. From these shows, his work has been chosen several times for their national tour. His art has also appeared as covers, illustrations and features in many outdoor magazines.

A log cabin in the hardwoods of northern Michigan, overlooking the North branch of the Manistee River, is home for Lawrence and his wife, Susan. The symbol preceding his signature in each of his painting shows the importance of his family in his work. The oddly shaped “S” is for his wife Susan (an accomplished basket weaver and instructor), and the “M” and “B” represent their sons, Matthew and Brett.

“Wolf” – An Acrylic Painting Demonstration by Rod Lawrence

Wolf Acrylic Painting Demonstration

Cropping In

I especially liked the angle of this wolf’s head and the bright backlighting. When cropping in on the head, I left enough negative space around it to close in on the wolf without confining it too tightly.

Wolf Painting Demonstration in Acyrlics

Step One

First I mix the overall base color for the head using cerulean blue, white, and smaller amounts of burnt umber, violet, and ultramarine blue. For the background, I create several values using many different combinations of burnt umber, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, white and violet–sometimes adding yellow ochre and cadmium yellow light. I apply these mixes wet-on wet, blending as I paint.

Acrylic Painting Tutorial Wolf

Step Two

Now I transfer the main lines of the background branches from my sketch to the painting, beginning with the background mixes from step one. I apply washes of both lighter and darker values to soften the edges and slowly build up the foliage forms. Then I use a darker value on the area just to the left of the wolf, and I apply both light and dark values to the areas above and to the right of the wolf’s head. In the lower-left corner, I start to add some lighter value “holes” (the negative spaces) to the background.

Wildlife Wolf Acrylic Painting Tutorial

Step Three

Now I wash in the background lights using a mixture of white, yellow ochre, and orange. I build the lightest areas using white mixed with yellow ochre, cadmium yellow light, and cerulean blue. Then I transfer the facial and fur details from my sketch, painting them with a slightly darker value than the base color; I also build up the eye and nose darks, applying several washes. And I add fur details with a value in between the base color and the darker values.

Acrylic Painting Lesson Wolf

Step Four

When painting the lightest areas, I use thin washes and slowly build my paint into thicker layers. Then I lay on a darker value to create depth, indicating deeper areas of fur and dark markings. When painting fur, look for clumps of hair as well as color patterns. Fur varies in length and color, and it tends to clump in areas where it is thicker or where it is constantly compressed by movement. Take the time to really see how the clumps overlap, shadow each other, and weave in and out. This will help you paint fur more realistically.

Acrylic Painting Wildlife Tutorial

Step Five

Now it’s time for color washes (see the samples below), which will enhance the wolf and begin changing the overall look of the base color in some areas. I use a lot of water, treating these mixes like subtle watercolor washes. When dry, these colors will look darker than they do when applied, so you must use some restraint when painting them. This wolf is primarily a grayish-white, so I do not want to add too much color to the body.

Wolf Acrylic Painting Tutorial Picture

Step Six

I establish the eyes with yellow ochre and add a cadmium yellow light wash around the wolf to warm the highlights. Then I paint the next darker value, adding cerulean blue where I want a more grayish-blue and adding more burnt umber where I want more intensity and warmth.

Wildlife Acrylic Painting Techniques

Step Seven

Now I’ve finished with the darker values. Next I apply yellow ochre washes to the head and chest, sometimes adding burnt umber and cerulean blue. For the eyes, which need subtle washes to make them look more realistic, I also add a tiny bit of white and cadmium yellow light.

Wildlife Wolf Acrylic Painting Techniques

Step Eight

For more contrast, I emphasize the eyes, nose, and ears with a mix of cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, burnt umber, and violet. I start the wash above the eyes and between the ears, continuing over the base of the ear on the left. Next I use thicker paint to construct the darker areas. I continue adding the darker value throughout the wolf’s head, applying washes for small changes and several coats of paint to cover really dark areas. Then I mix my darkest value–burnt umber, ultramarine blue, and violet–and apply it over the last wash.

Wildlife Wolf Acrylic Painting Tutorial

Step Nine – Final Step

With a cerulean blue, yellow ochre, violet, and white mix, I punch up the detail of the fur tips around the eyes, in the cheek and muzzle, and on the chest. Next I use white with a hint of violet to paint the backlit edges, starting with washes and then switching to thick layers of paint. I drag the tip of my round brush into the background to create the finer hair highlights. Next I add the final details, beginning with washes of white tinted with yellow around the left ear. I also paint some darker and lighter fur in the cheek and throat area to emphasize contrast. I apply a bluish-purple tint on the nose; then I stroke in the fine, delicate whiskers.

Eye to Eye - Painting Wolves in Acrylics

    By Guest Artist:  Julie Askew
    Introduction

This is an acrylic painting on board of Wolves from the Lamar Pack. I was fortunate enough to spend time with them in the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park some years ago. I had watched them for some time and they were leaving the area, heading back to the den. I knew they had pups hidden there.

In the final moments of the encounter, they crossed in front of me heading up a bank and quietly melted into the darkness of the forest.

I had the haunting feeling that they had stopped and were looking back at me, watching the watcher.

It is that moment I wanted to capture in this painting called “Eye to Eye”.

I like to create stories with my work. It is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. Compiling numerous field sketches and a bunch of my detailed reference photos of the animals, I begin to build the painting.

As I aim to depict September time, my initial research is to ensure that the colour of the foliage and the length of the fur fits with my chosen season.

    Getting the Composition Right

I first give my board a wash of Yellow Ochre and Cadmium Red. I use this primer colour for most of my paintings to remove any white speckles. I often allow the colour to glow through in chosen areas to warm the painting.

I complete a few thumbnail designs on paper to get a feeling of the composition. Then I go straight in with paint and a nice size 14 flat brush on the primed board. With a mix of Burnt Umber and Ultramarine, I lay down the shapes of the Wolves. I make sure that the sizes work together by comparing shoulder and rump heights and sizing up the heads.

Early in my career, I drew the subjects carefully onto sheets of paper and then transferred them onto the painting surface. With years of experience, I now prefer to develop the subject in paint, straight onto the board or canvas. It gives me a softer and more comfortable feeling with the subject. I change things as I go along.

The first image shows how I decided to position the wolves, creating a sharp triangle or arrow shape in the composition. I opted for this to direct the viewer across the painting, to the eyes of the third Wolf on the right.

All work up to this point is done with flat brushes and having roughed in the shapes of the animals, I added a thin layer of fur colour.

    Keeping a Consistent Light Source

Most important, at this stage, is to work out the direction of light and how it will affect each animal. It is necessary to understand the shape and conformation of the animal to create the desired lighting.

To explore how it works, it helps to think of the animals like a sculptor, in 3D rather than a flat painting. It is very useful to make a small clay model of the animal shapes and then use a lamp from different directions to see what happens to the light.

Remember that the light direction has to be consistent throughout a painting. The light on the animals will have to match the light in the habitat.

As I was imagining the animals in 3D it became clear to me that the angle of light I had chosen would cast a shadow from the middle Wolf onto the black Wolf to the left, so I made sure this was indicated.

A detail like that can make all the difference to the completed painting.

Next, I rough in an idea of plants and rocks to see how the Wolves will sit in the landscape. Then I add character to the eyes, switching to round brushes for crisper detail.

In a painting that is all about eye contact, they obviously have to be just right. Here I wanted the expression to be curious and watchful, wild but not intimidating.

And I wanted each Wolf to have a different character.

I used placement of pupils and highlights to create the effect I was after and continually changed them slightly throughout the painting process.

    Adding the Background

Blocking in a dark background with the same mix of Burnt Umber and Ultramarine, popped out the foreground and enabled me to see how light and composition were working.

This was painted quite thickly. The background was going to be a forest so putting the darks in also gave me my ground layer for painting this area.

I now placed two lines to indicate the position of trees in the background, making sure the balance was comfortable.

I also started indicating coat texture and gave the plants more colour. Every new day brings a fresh perspective when you look at a painting in progress.

In this painting, as the days went by, I was constantly checking the anatomy of the Wolves and adjusting shapes.

Work starts on the background, so back with my flat brushes again. At this stage, I had decided on quite a stark forest setting and I plotted in the shapes, using a mix of Titanium White and Yellow Ochre in blocks.

I love painting in negative and seeing the tree shapes emerge between the blocks of the sky I am painting, so nothing is pre-drawn. I feel it gives a more random feel to the trees than if I paint them carefully, as trees on sky.

Having blocked in the shapes, I take some time out and have a break. A cup of coffee, lunch or a few days, doing a different painting. After blocking in such a drastic area, I need to think about it. Then I can return to the studio with fresh eyes.

In this case, my fresh eyes told me that I needed to tone down the sky area completely, to stop any competition with the light on the Wolves.

Toning down the sky with Cobalt Blue and adding distance trees, I then worked in the detail and light in the nearer trees. I started refining shapes and ensured that they felt natural and fitted the species type.

Rocks and foreground plants next, remembering my direction of light and keeping it consistent throughout.

    Creating Fur Textures

With everything now coming together, I start adding fur and form to the 3rd Wolf (right-hand side).

Earlier on, I used to try and paint every hair or feather on my subjects but realised after some years, that in reality, your eyes see texture and shape, more than such extreme detail. By indicating texture rather than high detail, I feel a more natural painting is achieved.

With Wolves as any creatures, it is important to know the direction and length of fur at any point on the animal. It changes all over, with swirls and tufts that help show muscle and shape. Researching specifics can be difficult so study footage of Wolves for details. It is a nice challenge to add texture, colour, light and shade to give each animal its individuality.

The cropped, close-up image above shows how darkening down the plants behind the 3rd Wolf with a wash of Burnt Umber, helps bring her lights out and give her more form.

Picking out small, light areas of grasses and bushes, but keeping them toned down, also enhances the light on the Wolf.

Having sorted one Wolf out, it is now easier to complete the other two animals. The biggest challenge was actually to paint the dark Wolf (using dark browns and blues).

To create muscles and light, cast shadow and reflected light - as well as sunlight on a dark coat, proved a brain teaser of colour combinations and was the most satisfying Wolf to complete.

    Getting Down to Detail

The photograph below gives a sense of the size of the painting. Completing areas with small brushwork (small meaning something like a size 6 brush - normally a round one at this stage), just tickling textures and details, is probably something no-one else would notice, but little corrections can, in fact, make a big difference.

    A Dramatic Re-think...

Right at the end of my working on this painting, I decided that the trees in the background that I had worked with in such detail, were too distracting and took away from the Wolves. It is just one of those things that can come to you late in the process and there is no going back.

    It had to change.

So with a big flat brush and a dark wash, I knocked the whole area back in tone. A small strip of distant plants was freshened up on top of the wash and also the foreground plants were given a dark wash, linking them better in with the background.

A dramatic change right at the end, but ultimately it gives the painting the feel I wanted and brings you “Eye to Eye“ with the Wolves of Lamar.
