Tacoma freedom fair 2019

Tacoma freedom fair 2019 DEFAULT

Tacoma is home to the Freedom Fair, which is one of the biggest fireworks shows in Western Washington. But that’s not the only place to watch fireworks. If you want even more options, look to the full list of where to find fireworks in Pierce County.

July 3rd Fireworks at Cheney Stadium

Take in a baseball game at Cheney Stadium and stay afterward for a pre-Independence Day fireworks show. On July 3, the Rainiers play the Salt Lake Bees, with the game beginning at 7:05 p.m. and fireworks that begin about 10 to 15 minutes after the game ends. You can also spot the fireworks from outside the stadium in surrounding neighborhoods, but just be careful where you park as most stores surrounding the stadium don’t allow event parking.

Tacoma Freedom Fair

Without a doubt the area’s most popular Independence Day festival is the Freedom Fair on Tacoma’s Ruston Way. The celebration begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends with a spectacular fireworks display at 10:00 p.m.

This annual event draws a large crowd and it’s easy to understand why, there’s plenty of food, fun and, of course, fireworks at the Freedom Fair. With local arts and crafts and merchandise vendors, beer gardens and food vendors, you can spend the day eating, drinking and perusing goods. But there’s entertainment as well, with a classic car show from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., an air show midday, musical acts performing throughout the day and into the evening, plus plenty of kids activities.

Parking can be hard to find and can go quickly, but there’s street parking in the adjoining neighborhoods and shuttles are available. You can also park blocks away and walk in.

An airshow over Commencement Bay is just one portion of the July 4 Tacoma Freedom Fair, but it certainly is the most interesting part! A few photos of of this years event, which returned in force after a short absence.

Ace Maker II (N133HH) is an ex-RCAF CT-133 Silver Star (CAF 133452).

The Marines brought an AV-8B Harrier to the event.  The hovering is really only a party trick, but it is a very cool party trick. The Navy provided a EA-18G Growler from NAS Whidbey Island as pictured in the header photo.
The F4U-7 Corsair (N1337A/BuNo. 133722) from the Erickson Aircraft Collection in Madras, Oregon.
The ex-RCAF Kittyhawk (N940AK/AK940/RCAF 1058), also from the Erickson Aircraft Collection in Madras, Oregon, makes a dirty pass.
It was pointed out by the commentator that both types were flown by Tacoma native Pappy Boyington.  No idea if that was on purposeful choice by the airshow organizers or just a happy coincidence.

This first BIG event that the community will get after months of lockdown will feature great military and classic planes as in past years. Space is limited so get your tickets TODAY.  Two daily shows will be presented (a morning and afternoon performance) on both July 3rd and 4th.

We were just as disappointed as you are that the city of Tacoma would not allow us to do the Freedom Fair again this year. So we (Tacoma Events Commission) went through great efforts to have our aircraft from the Wings and Wheels air show to fly over Commencement Bay for the people to see and enjoy as well. The aircraft will fly on July 3rd and 4th from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Grab some food and a grill and enjoy the Ruston Way waterfront. Make sure you bring plenty of water to drink. There are no vendors. Keep in mind that there will be lots of traffic and congestion so we do suggest that you get your tickets for Wings and Wheels at Gig Harbor. Otherwise, we hope you can at least see the free show along Ruston Way.
