Lockheed SRA Blackbird   "   "

Aircraft # first flew on August 10th, Over the next 23 years it flew missions with the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing from Beale AFB in California and Kadena AFB in Japan. In it flew six of the nine non-stop operational missions from the US to the Middle East to monitor the Yom Kippur war. Nearing the end of its career, the aircraft was briefly decorated with stunning "Night Hawk" artwork applied to the vertical stabilizers in chalk. # eventually logged flight hours, the fourth highest of the 32 SRs built. It was retired from service in and flown to the USAF Airman Heritage Museum at Lackland AFB, Texas where it is currently on display.

Lockheed SRA Blackbird

Designed as a long-range, strategic reconnaissance aircraft, The Lockheed SR first flew on December 22, Nicknamed "The Blackbird," this highly-advanced aircraft was believed by many to be ahead of its time. It was capable of mach 3 and still holds the record for the fastest "air breathing manned aircraft" in the world. Its speed and ability to operate at high altitudes served as a defensive feature; when attacked by surface-to-air missiles, the pilot needed only to accelerate to avoid being struck. Only 32 SR's were operated during its year service history, and though 12 were destroyed in accidents none were lost to enemy attack.

Century Wings' scale SR includes the mission-capable SRA and training SRB variants. The models are constructed almost entirely of metal with only the smallest amount of plastic used in the manufacturing process. Crisply detailed panel lines and ultra-thin metal rudders and edges surround the airframe to reproduce this eye-catching speed demon. The sharply pointed shock cones protruding from the engine nacelles and the afterburner detail at the rear of the engine are accurately reproduced, and the correctly detailed set of landing gear and doors have been included as robust sub-assemblies that allow for quick and easy configuration for ground or in-flight display.

Aircraft # rolled off the assembly line on August 16th, and first flew on November 17th, As with all SRs, # was assigned to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing based at Beale AFB, CA. In , the SR program was officially cancelled and the majority of airframes were prepared for a life as static display pieces in museums around the United States. # was one of three Blackbirds to be spared however, and was delivered to NASA on March 19th, for high-speed/high-altitude flight testing. The USAF markings we replaced with NASA markings and the aircraft was assigned NASA serial #

Fate intervened once more in when the USAF was tasked with resuming SR operations with the three flightworthy airframes that had been loaned to NASA. NASA crews flew a series of high-speed check flights between January 12th, and June 2nd, before handing the aircraft back to the USAF. # was the first SR to be reactivated and the NASA markings were once again replaced with muted USAF markings. The SRs were operated by Detachment 2 of the 9th RW out of Edwards AFB but the they were still assigned the red "BB" (Beale Bandits) tailcode with four iron crosses of their home base at Beale. Sadly, the reactivation was short lived and the three remaining SRs were permanently retired.

# flew for the final time on September 30th, and ended her career with a total of flight hours. This aircraft is currently on display at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, still wearing the Beale Bandits tail markings.

SR Blackbird 1/ Scale Diecast Model

Scale Diecast Metal - SR - SRA Blackbird Length: 9" Wingspan: ” This Blackbird model has some very small and fragile parts for the landing gear that needs to be assembled/put in place. A small amount of glue might be needed to secure the pieces. One could easily chose to not assembled the landing gear and model the plane in the inflight position, but be advised that the wheel well covers are molded in the opened position. This is really a "no-play" model or a "display-only" model. It is mostly metal and very heavy. It also has a number of antennas which look great but are very fragile. If you have small kids that like to play with your models, save yourself some frustration (and money) and wait till later to get a model like this one. The box is labeled as not suitable for children under The maker of this model did a good job with this model, specifically the color scheme and the markings are very crisp and clear. The panel lines and hatches are very nicely done (engraved). The packaging of these models is very nice, it comes in a rectangular styrofoam pack. The pack in turn, goes inside a full color cardboard sleeve. The pack measures 8 inches by 8 inches by 2 inches.
