We get questions like, “What are the best tattoo machines for beginners?” and “Which are the best beginner tattoo kits?”
We’re glad you came to us today to find affordable tattoo machines, Whether it is a coil machine or rotary machine.
Our reviews go over both the rotary tattoo machine and coil tattoo machines. You’ll need to choose one type or the other. You can read more about coil machines and rotary machines in the buying guide below if needed. You can also see our top picks in the table below.
If you don’t want to read the full article then check out our favorite products in the table below.
Coil Versus Rotary Tattoo Machines
Besides these two kinds, there are other types of tattoo machines, including pneumatic. But most professional tattoo artists start with either a rotary tattoo machine or a coil tattoo machine.
Differentiating Between a Liner and a Shader
A liner machine runs faster than a shader for precision work. It has a smaller gap between the front spring and contact screw and has a shorter front spring because it has a shorter stroke.
A shader runs slower but with a higher power to penetrate deeper. It has a wider gap between the front spring and contact screw and longer front spring and a softer stroke.
The best tattoo kits for beginners include at least one shader and one-liner.
But before you start worrying about which kind of tattoo machine to pick, let’s look at reviews of the top beginner tattoo kits. This way you’ll get an idea of what’s available.
|Rotary--DC motor rotates cyclically to provide up and down needle motion||Quiet operation|
Low vibration, easy to control
Versatile – used for shading, coloring, and lining
Easy to adjust
Simple to set up and use
Difficult to adjust by ear
|Coil-- most commonly used are double coiled versions||Most popular type of machine|
Easy to customize
Ideal for long tattoo sessions
Easy to regulate power and speed
|Loud buzzing noise|
Requires more tuning and more maintenance
4 Things to Remember about Tattooing Technique
Whether you have a budget tattoo machine or something that costs more than your rent for the month, the results depend on these four things.
Make sure the needle goes in at a 45° angle. More than that and the ink comes up out of the puncture. Less than that and the design will look wrong.
Go too deep, and it’s going to hurt a lot and bleed. If you don’t go deep enough, you’ll scratch the surface, and the ink won’t stay.
Take the time to practice setting up and tearing down your machine. Learn proper sterilization techniques and hygiene.
Freehand art tends to look squiggly. Instead, support your palm on the skin and use it as a pivot point to control and balance the tattoo machine.
Now that you’ve seen a variety of beginner tattoo kits with both rotary tattoo machines and coil tattoo machines, you probably have a better idea of what you want.
We recommend a digital power supply for beginners. But the choice between rotary tattoo machines and coil tattoo machines is up to you. If you have a chance to try them both, do so.
Obviously, you’ll need inks. Many of the inexpensive beginner tattoo kits come with practice inks that aren’t made for human skin. But feel free to draw all over practice skin or banana skin with them.
Also, you’ll need needles, lots of needles. And tips, and ink cups, and needle trays.
But, safety first – don’t forget you’ll be sterilizing your equipment. You’ll need germicidal liquid, an autoclave, autoclave bags, and an ultrasonic tattoo machine cleaner. Paper towels and disposable gloves are a must.
Don’t forget comfortable chairs for yourself and your client, plus a worktable and excellent lighting.
Hustle Butter or Vaseline comes in handy for stencils. Bandages, plastic wrap, and aftercareointment come in handy after you’re done. But don’t forget the disposable razors beforehand.
Most of all, what you need for tattooing is the desire to be a tattoo artist, not a hack.
Jimmy Ho, Gabe Shum, and other great tattoo artists developed their talent both on the skin and on paper. They put a lot of practice into their work. They were willing to learn.
You’ll be creating body art – perhaps for yourself, perhaps for others – that will endure a lifetime. You’ll be helping people express their deepest desires.
Do good art.

We’d love to hear back from you about which tattoo machine you’re using and what you like about it. Feel free to leave us a comment below.
Tattooing is heavily tool-dependent (like other crafts that require this much creative flair.)
With the right kind of gear, you can significantly cut the learning curve, enhance your performance and the quality of the end-results, and considerably reduce the amount of effort and time you need to create intricate pieces.
And there is a lot of gear to get. For most tattooing jobs, you will require an arsenal of tools that include a tattoo machine, power supply, foot pedal, clip cord, tattoo lining tube, armature bar nipples, tattoo ink, and tattoo needles… and that’s just the basics.
Other essentials you need include stencils, a couple of rubber bands, a tub of Vaseline, ink caps, water, paper towels, and shaving razors, amongst others.
Consequently, putting together a functional and handy collection of tattooing equipment is no easy feat. Unsurprisingly, several top artists take pride in their collection of tools, having built them up over the years, or even decades of experience, during which they regularly scoured the market for the best gadgets on offer.
However, as a newbie to the tattoo industry, you don’t have this advantage of prolonged skin in the game.
One of the fastest ways to make up for this lack of experience buying tools is to opt for premade tattoo kits as an amateur. Tattoo kits are expert-vetted selections of tattooing equipment available from some of the industry’s top manufacturing names. Plus, buying a tattoo kit is typically significantly more cost-effective than getting each of the included resources individually.
Even for expert tattooists, a premade tattoo kit can offer an excellent, affordable way to start a new arsenal of tools for your work quickly.
Whether you are a beginner tattooist looking to pick up your first gear or a seasoned veteran trying to restock, this guide will help. Here are the top tattoo kits you can buy today to boost your workflow and give your corner of the tattoo parlor makeover it deserves.

The centerpiece of this kit is a pair of Dragonhawk tattoo machines that are some of the best-in-class offerings at the moment. Even without the rest of the package, this pair of engines pack enough class and quality to make it a good deal at the mouth-watering prices at which this kit retails.
Dragonhawk tattoo machines have a reputation in the industry for being some of the most reliable machines on the market and packing some of the most durable construction you will find anywhere. The pair included in this kit is no different.
Here, you get a coil liner machine and shader machine, both featuring a cast-iron chassis and a composite material exterior that combines to create a sturdy frame that is guaranteed to last you for years on end without any durability issues.
Both machines also feature a core layer of 10-wrap copper coils, naturally highly-elastic and resistant to fatigue, enabling you to work long continuous hours with either device without issues.

Power supply kits are a significant cause for concern in tattoo setups as they are usually the first part of the system that develops durability issues over time.
Some of the most typical issues with tattoo power supplies include the power cord losing connectivity from wear and tear, the foot pedal breaking or losing connectivity or power problems with the clip cord.
Hence, the fact that you are getting a matching OEM power supply with this kit, and from a brand like Dragonhawk that has made a name for itself for providing products with top tier quality and durability is a big plus.
Plus, the included power supply with this unit is also a beast in terms of functionality. The power system consists of a sturdy foot pedal for easy manipulation of the power supply and a clip cord that transfers a stable and accurate current.
With this device, you also get a straightforward reading of the operational voltage thanks to a large digital LED display in front of the controller and power knobs that let you adjust the voltage output to match your needs.
Here too, Dragonhawk continues its use of OEM products. The needles included in this kit are an assortment of 20 pieces of commonly used round liners and shaders, all separately packed in sterilized blister packages. Even the needle tips come in separate, sterilized, individual packets.
Plus, all the needles are pre-sterilized with EO gas to ensure the highest levels of safety possible.
You already know that with Dragonhawk products, you are getting top-line quality, and the needles are no exception. These tattoo needles feature a medical-grade 316 stainless steel construction that ensures maximum stability and reliability.
The needles also include a host of extra perks like an attached silicone membrane mechanism that helps prevent ink backflow, an indentation at the needle tips that fosters rapid ink flow and enhanced saturation. The included needles are also smooth-edge options, which can help to significantly minimize the amount of trauma inflicted on the skin while tattooing.

The one major drawback to this tattoo kit is the included ink. However, considering the amount of value crammed into this package for only 60 bucks, we can’t complain too much.
The ink set included in this kit is the 10-bottle premier offering from Immortal Inks, a tattoo ink manufacturer based here in the U.S. Their ink pack contains the basics; black and white and primary colors red and yellow. You also get two shades of blue and secondary colors; purple, brown, orange, and gold, all in 5ml bottles.
Considering that a standalone purchase of this ink set will set you back 25 bucks, it is a considerable bargain that you are getting it included in the package. However, in terms of quality, this batch may leave a sour taste for some users.
While the ink set from Immortal Ink is decent enough to create raw, colorful tattoos and is an excellent pick for practice, it’s quality and fade-resistance is a far cry from what you get from high-end brands like World Famous Tattoo Ink and Kuro Sumi.
However, since most professional tattooists already have their ink preferences and most people buying this kit will be amateurs seeking practice, we will let this gaffe pass.

With each order, you get two high-quality metal grips, one for each machine. Dragonhawk makes both grips, and as you would expect, they both feature sturdy steel construction for maximum durability.
These grips also sport indentations along the length of their profile, from end to end, to ensure you always have a firm hold and to enhance maneuverability.
Another massive selling point of this tattoo kit is the number of extra accessories you get included in the box. In addition to the core elements we mentioned above, you also get a tattoo stencil transfer paper, one practice skin, a pair of black gloves, and several rubber bands.
The depth of material included in this package means that you only need one or two extra items to complete your tattoo session, providing an excellent quickstart setup for any amateurs or newbies.
- Complete starter kit for beginners with all the tattooing basic and tens of essential small accessories
- Two high-end Dragonhawk tattoo machines for lining and shading with matching Dragonhawk power supply
- 20 individually-packed pre-sterilized 316 medical-grade stainless steel needles included in the box
- Super affordable pricing
Other 6 Best Tattoo Kits We Also Recommend
The primary target audience for tattoo kits are amateurs, beginners, and hobbyists who are just starting their tattooing journey. Hence, with this package, manufacturers tend to max out the amount of material included, often at the expense of quality.
However, our top pick, the Complete Tattoo Kit 2 from Dragonhawk, does one of the best jobs of creating a small but effective group of materials that includes almost everything you need to get started.
Plus, with several high-caliber pieces of machinery from Dragonhawk at the core of this selection, you can rest assured that you are getting some of the best quality you will find at this price.
Nevertheless, this specific assortment of equipment is not for everyone. Depending on your intentions, you may require a setup that packs a slightly different set of tools or more or less of certain items.
The good news is that there is such an abundance of starter kit offerings on the market with different configurations that you are bound to find something that suits your needs.
Here are a few handpicked options we found that are on par with or almost as good as our top pick.
1. Dragonhawk Complete Tattoo Kit 4
For those that prefer an even more robust kit to what you have with the Complete Tattoo Kit 2, Dragonhawk offers another collection, the Complete Tattoo Kit 4, that packs even more options for a more well-rounded tattooing experience.
The most significant change to this setup is the addition of two extra machines. Here, you get four coil-powered machines, a regular liner machine, a power liner machine, a soft shader machine, and a color packer machine.
With four specialized tattooing devices, you get significantly more resourcefulness out of this pack. Each machine is specially designed for a specific task, which can dramatically enhance your workflow and help you get jobs done faster and more effectively. The addition of more specialized machines also increases the total number of styles you can create and make for an overall, more enjoyable tattooing experience.
Plus, all four machines bring that dependable Dragonhawk construction you can trust. These devices pack sturdy steel frames and copper coils, resistant to fatigue, and can stay running for hours on end without freezing or incurring damage.
Similar to what you get in Tattoo Kit 2, this kit also includes a Dragonhawk power supply that delivers a stable and accurate current to either of the four machines.
Plus, this power supply system lets you connect two devices simultaneously and switch power between them with the click of the button for a more streamlined workflow. You also get a pin-point control of the power delivered to the machines with knobs that let you manipulate the voltage outflow to match your needs.
If you are othering this package, which includes more machines, the chances are that you will be doing more work from the start. Dragonhawk recognizes this fact and more than double the needles included in kit 2. Here you get 50 EO gas sterilized needles, all in individual blister packs. However, you only get ten bottles of Immortal tattoo ink here, just like in kit 2. You only get two grips to share across the four machines.
However, there is no shortage of other accessories here. Dragonhawk Complete Tattoo Kit 4 packs a double portion of all the accessories like rubber bands, practice skin, and stencil transfer papers with kit 2.
With this order, you also get a big black and chrome carry case to house all your tattoo equipment, adding increased portability and an aesthetic touch.
- Complete starter kit for beginners with all the tattooing basic and tens of essential small accessories
- Four specialized Dragonhawk tattoo machines, with a regular liner, a power liner, a soft shader, and a color packer

2. Solong Complete Tattoo Kit 3
Solong is yet another famous brand in the industry, known for building high-quality products that promise top-notch performance over extended periods. Here, you get an all-inclusive kit that packs a double dose of everything you need to get started on a tattooing journey.
This starter kit’s core element is a set of three tattoo machines—one light shading machine, one heavy shader, and a lining machine—to cater to all your various styling tasks. All three devices pack a high-quality steel construction and a 10-coil copper nucleus that combines to create a durable unit that is guaranteed to maintain its reliability over extended periods, even when frequently working in temperature extremes.
Plus, you can easily adjust the machines with the included toolset, customizing it to fit any particular intended purpose.
Solong includes a self-produced digital unit that lets you rig two of the three machines simultaneously for a more seamless workflow for the power supply. The power unit also lets you work at any voltage level between 1.5V and 16.2V, allowing you to tweak the machine to provide the exact amount of oomph you need to recreate the images in your mind’s eye accurately.
To maximize the durability of your tattoo machines, you should keep the operating voltage under 12V. Operating most tattoo machines at extreme voltages over extended periods can break them, as most engines don’t have the resilience to handle such stress.
The supply unit also ships with a foot pedal and a clip cord to further streamline the operation process to help you work faster and with ease.
Besides this core setup, you also get a host of useful accessories with this setup.
Some of the attachments included in the box include 50 assorted liner, shader, and magnum stainless steel needles, eight matching steel tips, two color-coded aluminum grips, a 7-bottle set of 8ml sterilized full-color ink, a 5-piece set of tattoo tip cleaning brushes, a 3-size adjustment tools for modifying the tattoo machines, a paper manual for the kit, and access codes to a digital platform that takes you through beginner tattooing tutorial video. You get a lot.
Plus, you also get a host of disposables, including 60 disposable tips, 50 rubber bands and grommets, ten rubber rings, one reusable, dual-sided practice skin, two pairs of disposable gloves, 100 pieces of assorted size ink mixing cups, and one cup holder.

- 50 individually-packed pre-sterilized 316 medical-grade stainless steel needles
- More disposables than you get with most other starter kits
- One year warranty coverage with free replacements during the warranty period

3. Fancier S-T06 Tattoo Kit
While there is no shortage of tattoo kits you can buy on the market today, one area where the Fancier S-T06 has the edge over the rest of the competition is in its presentation.
The first thing that catches your eye with this package is the aesthetic and sturdy black and chrome case that houses all the elements that come with this package. The carrying case also features a lock and key, adding even more functionality as a form of protective storage for your tools.
Inside the box, you will find all of the tools you need, including the tattoo machines, grips, tips, and adjustment tools, all slotted perfectly into matching crevices in the dual foam inserts that ship with the box.
Even the tattoo machines themselves continue this exquisite presentation policy. Two of the included six devices featuring sculptures (one machine has a skull while the other has a goblin) embedded into their chassis. One of the machines sports an antique design with a matching bronze finish, while the remaining two tattoo machines are more traditional but are also aesthetic in their own right.
However, the machines included in this package are not all just good looks. In this kit, each tattoo machine features a sturdy steel core that allows reliable performance even in temperature extremes and copper coils that guarantees reliable performance over extended periods.
Plus, all the tattoo machines in this set are all-purpose tools, which means you can easily tweak them with the included adjustment tools to work either as a lining or shading device.
Fancier also ships its power supply in the box that is compatible with both a 110v or a 220v power inflow, has a foot pedal for easy control, and can support a single machine at a time for an uninterrupted 10-hour period.
In the box, you will also find other core accessories like four machine grips (two stainless steel grips and two colored grips), 50 tattoo needles with both liners and shaders, 50 rubber bands, 50 grommets, ten rubber rings, and adjustment tools.
You also get a supply of seven varied color ink bottles. However, many reviewers online complain that the inks are subpar quality and too thin to make any passable tattoos. However, these ink bottles could still work great as practice gear.
The package also includes extras like disposable work gloves and a tutorial video DVD guide, and paper manuals for beginners that provide instruction for designing tattoos.
- All-inclusive tattoo kit with instructional book and DVD for beginners and hobbyists
- Six all-purpose tattoo machines with sturdy steel construction and resilient copper coil core

5. Budget Option: Rehab Ink Tattoo Ink
If you are a hobbyist, the chances are that you don’t want to shell out the big bucks to get one of the popular tattoo kits. However, that does not mean you have to settle for a dud. With its current retail price of only $30, the Rehab Ink Tattoo Ink is one of the cheapest functional tattoo kits you will find anywhere.
Plus, this beginner tattoo kit is no pushover either.
On its product pages, the Rehab Ink Tattoo Ink consistently receives positive reviews from users who are awe by its reliable performance, especially considering its low dirt price point.
Furthermore, this offering packs everything you need to get started tattooing as a hobbyist or an amateur.
Inside the included carrying case, you will find one all-purpose tattoo machine, a matching power supply (with clip cord and foot pedal), five tattoo needles (two round liners, two round shaders, and one magnum shader), 10 UV-resistant rubber bands, ten grommets, ten o-rings, a pair of latex gloves, a skin marking pen, thermal paper, a 2-sided practice skin, an instructional how-to ebook for the whole setup, and even a tube of aftercare ointment amongst others.
That’s a lot for 30 bucks.
However, it would be best if you remembered that this kit is targeted almost exclusively at hobbyists, so hence the durability may be a bit shaky. If you want to use this setup over the long term, you may want to consider upgrading a few parts like the control pedal, clip cord, or the entire power supply unit over time.
Plus, while you do get some ink packets in the package, we recommend that you use this low-quality ink only for practice. If you are working on human skin, consider getting a more premium option like the offerings from Kuro Sumi and Mom’s Millenium Ink.
- Arguably the most affordable yet functional tattoo kit you will find anywhere
- All-purpose tattoo machine with sturdy steel construction and resilient copper coil core
- All-inclusive kit with a carrying case and an abundance of tattooing accessories to match all your needs
- Five individually-packed pre-sterilized 316 medical-grade stainless steel needles: (Round Liners: 5RL, 7RL / Round Shaders: 5RS, 7RS / Magnums: 7M1)

6. Rotary Option: Stigma Complete Rotary Tattoo Kit
Rotary machines are the preferred option for a lot of tattoo artists for a good reason.
A rotary machine’s core element is an electric motor, not electromagnetic coils, so rotaries are typically significantly lighter and more comfortable to use than their coil counterparts. This substantially lower heft means that tattoo artists can use rotary to work longer hours while avoiding cramps and reducing the likelihood of errors.
Consequently, rotary machines can be an excellent choice for beginners, amateurs, and inexperienced hobbyists, especially when they want to embark on longer, more ambitious sessions.
However, there is a shortage of low-priced quality rotary tattoo kits for beginners, and that is where this all-purpose kit from Stigma takes the cake.
This starter kit’s centerpiece is a small, portable rotary machine from Stigma that is just the right size for even inexperienced newcomers to handle for extended periods. With a length of 12cm and weighing only 154 grams, this stellar piece from Stigma is the most manageable, lightweight machine you’ve ever seen. The supreme aesthetics and the sleek matte body on this unit is also a big plus.
The tattoo machine packs a 10-watt electric Japanese motor that brings all the power you need for all your tattooing tasks. The motor’s high-end construction means that you can leave it running for hours on end without making the machine overheat.
The machine also features a state-of-the-art gear system that ensures super quiet and reliable operation while outputting a considerable voltage quotient between 9 and 11 volts. Plus, you also get a digital power supply included in the box, with four graduated power modes to help you quickly modify the amount of energy delivered to the machine.
Pair this engine with any needle group (it works with all cartridge types), and you immediately have a liner or shader at the ready.
While the Stigma Complete Rotary Tattoo Kit is not the most extensive option out there for accessories, it does pack a decent amount. You will find 20 assorted cartridges, one practice skin, a pair of gloves, and one tattoo grip bandage in the included carrying case.
However, like with many options in this price range, the ink included in the package is completely useless for actual tattooing, and you should opt for a more premium option when working on human skin.
- A lightweight all-purpose rotary machine that measures only 154 grams
- 10-watt electric Japanese motor brings massive power for all your tasks
- Some of the best bang-to-buck ratios on the market
- Super affordable pricing

What is a Tattoo Starter Kit
Whether you’re a pro or just getting started as a tattoo artist, you’re going to need some tools.
Though there are tattoo starter kits out there, none of them will have everything you need to get the job done.
This is why you need to know the tattoo supply you require to have that perfect starter kit. So, let’s take a quick look at the good tattoo kits for beginners that you’re going to need to get your tattoo parlor up and running.
Tattoo gun: The first thing you need is the tattoo machine or more commonly known as the gun. Without it, you won’t be able to ink the body.
Power supply: To make the machine working, you’ve to supply it with enough power. For that, you will need the right kind of tattoo power supply.
Tattoo needle: How are you going to ink the body without the needles? It is the thing that will get the ink deep into the skin layer and have that awesome artwork there displayed.
Ink: You’ve got to get tattoo ink to engrave those beautiful arts on the skin.
Ink cups: Use an ink cup to pour the thing there to have it clean.
Gloves and paper towels: To keep things sanitary, use disposable gloves. While working with needles, there will be blood. That’s why you need to wear sterile gloves while doing the work. While using the paper towels to keep things clean.
Soap and alcohol: Before starting inking the body, you’ve got to wash the skin with soap. Plus, you’ve got to sterilize the surface as well as the equipment with alcohol.
Vaseline: The area near where you will tattoo on the skin can discolor due to the inking. Therefore, you’ve got to make sure to apply vaseline to avoid that. Plus, it helps to glide through the skin to make the work smoother than usual.
Practice skin: For the pros, it isn’t something necessary. But if it is the first time inking someone, then you should better practice on the fake skin rather than getting on with the real one.
Stencil paper: Being able to free-handing tattoos on the skin requires a lot of practice. That’s why you should start with stencil paper to transfer the art to the body without making mistakes
Trash can: Get rid of the used needles in the trash.
Rubber band: You should consider rubber band. You always see this tiny useful item inside starter, intermediate kit or pro tattoo gun kits.
Types of Tattoo Beginner Gun Kits Available for Purchase
Now, there are various types of tattoo beginner kits available in the market. So, before you start looking for the best tattoo gun kit for beginners, first you need to make sure, which type of kit, you’re looking to have.
Based on the type of tattoo gun, there are two types of tattoo rig you can get. You’ve got the coil and rotary kit.
In most cases, the tattoo guns come alone while in some cases, you will get one or two more pieces of tattooing equipment alongside them.
Then there is the tattoo starter kit which allows you with all the extra stuff that will get you started as a tattoo artist.
Advantages of Purchasing Good Tattoo Starter Kits
For those who are just starting as a tattoo artist, they should consider getting a kit rather than buying things separately.
Yes, getting things individually will help them to know more about the stuff. But it will take time to get on with the inking job. Meanwhile, if you’re a newbie, getting a kit will allow starting right away. That’s because you will have all the tools required right at your disposal.
You will have the tattoo gun, needles, ink, and many other things that allow you to run a small parlor on your own. Though you might not get everything you will need to run a proper shop. But most kits will have the equipment to get various jobs done like shading or just making some simple line patterns.
That’s why beginners should go for the kit, rather than spending big bucks on those customized components.
Best Tattoo Beginner Kits Buying Guide: Things to Consider
You know the kit and what they have to offer. Yet, choosing the right equipment might come with its own challenges.
No need to sweat.
In this buying guide, we will take a closer look at the things to consider to find the best tattoo equipment for beginners.
So, if you’re ready, then let’s get this thing started.
You’ve got to go with a kit type in mind. As you already know, there are two options to go for from here.
You can go with the rotary tattoo gun, tattoo pen or the tattoo coil machine.
And depending on the model you will get, you will polish your craft based on that. That’s because, though both tattoo guns have the same objective, they do the job quite differently.
While a coil one has a more hammer-like impact in terms of needling, the rotary machine one has a more fluent movement with its needles.
If you plan to learn the art of tattooing with both, then you’ve got to look for a kit, that offers both types of tattoo guns. But finding one like such will be quite difficult.
To run that tattoo gun, you need to first power it up. And for that, you’ve got to get a proper power supply. With the best tattoo machine kit, you will get the thing. But not all get made the same way. Some are better than others. Therefore, take your time and go through the kits to make sure you’ve got an equally reliable power supply for that tattoo machine of yours.
If your power outlet is far from your working space, then having a short cable will cause you a lot of trouble during work. So, be on the lookout to make sure you get a long enough cable to work from any place in the room.
Most of the kits will come with the basic components like a needle, ink, and all that thing to do the tattooing. But not all will have that practice material to do some dummy runs before you move on to inking someone’s body for real. That’s why if possible, find a kit with some practice skins or stencil paper to make sure you’ve got control over the machine. You don’t want to leave a scar on someone’s skin with your clumsy work.
The quality kits will come with a variety of color options. You can get them to do more color work rather than just working with regular ink. However, you should better check the quality of the ink before making the purchase as many kits have liquid ink that isn’t suitable to use on human skin.
Last but not the least, having a proper carrying case is quite important. That way, you can store all the things securely and take them with you to places where you’re called to do some inking.

Kit amazon tattoo
Children can buy self-tattooing kits from Amazon and it's completely legal
Young children are able to give themselves permanent tattoos by ordering kits from websites such as Amazon, it has emerged.
An investigation has revealed that a 10-year-old boy was able to log on to the internet and buy a tattooing kit which was delivered to his door just two days later.
Amazon imposes no age restrictions on buying the kits, which are similar to those used by professional tattooists, and they seem to be completely legal for children to buy.
Danger: Self-tattooing kits such as this one are freely available on websites including Amazon
Tattoo experts last night called upon the authorities to crack down on the sale of the kits to unlicensed tattooists, warning that the kits could spread deadly diseases such as HIV.
Maria Patricia, a specialist in tattoo removal, carried out the investigation after becoming shocked by the number of customers coming to her with unwanted tattoos they got as teenagers.
'Over the last few years I've been very disturbed about the amount of clients who've been having tattoos outside parlours - at friends' houses, at tattoo parties,' she told MailOnline.
'When I do my job, I've got these people in tears in my clinic - it's stopping them getting jobs.'
Maria Patricia, 48, who runs a clinic in Ashton-under-Lyne, in Greater Manchester, supervised a 10-year-old boy as he logged on to Amazon, found a £36 tattoo kit and bought it using a borrowed debit card.
Easy: Tattoo removal expert Maria Patricia filmed a 10-year-old boy buying a self-tattooing kit online
Professional: The kits are similar to those used by professional tattooists to create permanent inkings
The kit was delivered to the child's home two days later, and could then have been assembled and used by him if it had not been responsibly disposed of.
The equipment, which Maria Patricia says is 'the same standard as professional tattoo artists', included needles, ink and suggested designs.
Design: An example of a tattoo done on an adult using one of the kits available to buy on Amazon
She later repeated the experiment, this time using a pre-loaded payment card specifically designed for children, to buy a kit from a leading tattoo website.
While children cannot get credit cards until they turn 18, many banks allow them to have a debit card from a young age, and there are a number of pre-paid cards available which can be used to shop online.
A spokesman for Amazon refused to comment on the availability of tattoo kits, and a number of listings for the kits are still available on the site.
Amazon's terms of service ban under-18s from using its services without parental supervision, but there is no technical mechanism to stop children signing up and ordering products.
Some goods, such as knives and alcohol, will only be delivered to an adult with appropriate ID, but it is understood that Amazon has no plans to impose an age restriction on tattoo kits.
Professional tattooists must hold a health and safety certificate, and are legally barred from carrying out a tattoo on anyone under the age of 18.
However, there is no law banning children from tattooing themselves, and because tattooists are regulated by local councils there appears to be no official body overseeing online sales of tattoo kits.
The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, the Department of Health and Public Health England all say that they have no jurisdiction over the issue.
A Government source told MailOnline: 'There's nothing restricting the sale of these things online. If a 14 or 15-year-old orders something like this, there's no way to stop that. There's no safeguarding measures at all.'
Sharp: The kit, which was delivered within two days, included a set of needles used in tattoos
Package: The child holds up the set of different-coloured inks included with the kit he bought on Amazon
Maria Patricia - who has appeared on TV shows such as Channel 5's Tattoo Disasters - has passed her concerns on to her local MP Angela Rayner, who is lobbying Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to crack down on the problem.
Warning: Tattoo removal expert Maria Patricia is concerned that unregistered tattooists could be jeopardising people's health
'Tattooists need to have hygiene certificates and have council checks in order to do business, but there is no regulation for the general public or even children who wish to buy these kits online,' Maria Patricia said.
'The risks involved using equipment with needles include incorrect use and disposal of the needles, resulting in the transferal of infections like hepatitis and HIV.
'All we're asking is that if you want to do tattooing, you have to have a safety check. The Government has to say that no one is allowed to sell tattoo equipment without checking people's registration.'
She told MailOnline that the availability of these kits risked undermining the vast majority of professional tattooists who are completely responsible, and who have often worked with her to tighten up tattoo safety.
Maria Patricia also emphasised that many of the most talented tattooists are self-taught 'scratchers', who started their careers working on their own before branching out.
'It's not that I don't like tattoos, or think that they're a bad thing,' she said. 'We know that the best tattoo artists started as scratchers.'
A survey carried out earlier this year showed that as many as a quarter of young people aged between 16 and 19 could have a tattoo, with the majority of these carried out illegally.
Unlicensed tattooists are considered more likely to pose a health risk because they may not use new needles on every customer, unlike reputable practitioners.
In August, the Local Government Association launched a campaign highlighted the dangers of unregistered tattoo artists - warning them they could face jail or a £20,000 fine.
THE POSSIBLE HEALTH RISKS FROM USING AN UNLICENSED TATTOOIST
Infection – Dirty needles can pass infections, like hepatitis and HIV, from one person to another.
Allergies – Allergies to various ink pigments in both permanent and temporary tattoos have been reported and can cause problems.
Scarring – Unwanted scar tissue may form when getting or removing a tattoo.
Granulomas – These small knots or bumps may form around material that the body perceives as foreign, such as particles of tattoo pigment.
MRI complications – People may have swelling or burning in the tattoo when they have magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This happens rarely and does not last long.

What’s the Best Cheap Tattoo Kit on Professional Level?

Types of Tattoo Kits Available for Purchase
There are a number of types of tattoo guns, the most common from a technical point of view are the shader gun and the liner gun (lining is the outer line of the tattoo design and shader is the filling of the tattoo). But, it’s from a technical standpoint. From a mechanical point of view, there are 3 main types you need to know about: coil tattoo machine, rotary tattoo machine, and a pneumatic tattoo gun.
Let’s learn about the difference between those tattoo kit types because, in order to be a good tattoo artist, you need to learn which one suitable for each situation and the pros and cones of each of the tattoo guns kits.
Coil tattoo gun machine
Coil tattooing gun is the most common gun type with tattoo artists, beginners, and professionals alike. It comes with different coil arrangement when two is the standard and one coil and three are also available. The mechanical principle of the coil gun is electromagnetic coils which allow the needle to move up and down and perform the tattoo work. With coil guns, it’s possible to regulate the gun’s speed and power. Also, coil machines can perform either lining or filling functions.
Therefore, most of the time they come in a package of two – one is used as a lining coil gun and the second as a filler gun. On many occasions, coils gun kits are the weapon of choice since they provide great customizability options, an acceptable learning curve, and great performance both in lining and filling. If you searching out of the many tattoo kits for beginners available, pick one that is coil mechanism-based.
Rotary tattoo gun kit
Rotary tattooing gun is the first and the original tattoo machines ever made that based on rotary mechanisms. They use an electric motor as the main gear that allows the tattoo needle its movement. Rotary machines provide most “old school” fill while tattooing requires knowledge in calibration and some already proven skills.
Many experienced tattoo artists picking rotary guns as their gear. As for beginners, you should probably pick your beginner tattoo kits out of the coil mechanism category since many amateur tattoo artists feel that rotary machines are awkward in hand and allow less control. For the more experienced tattoo artist, the rotary gun kit could be a perfect choice that would provide them the satisfaction and the results they want.
Pneumatic tattoo guns
Pneumatic guns for tattooing have been invented (and patented) in 2000 by Carson Hill. Pneumatic machine gun using an air compressor to make the tattooing needle go up and down, also, it’s extremely lightweight compared to coil and rotary machine guns.
A pneumatic gun kit can be cleaned and sterilized without dis-assembly (comparing to other kits, which need to be taken apart). It’s important to mention, that those kits and the whole tattoo supplies package are pretty expensive and their “tattoo feeling” is pretty distinct to the classic coil guns and the rotary machines. Because of those reasons, many choose to avoid pneumatic kits.
Shader and liner tattoo kits
The liner tattoo machines used for tattoo outlines and black works while the shader machine is used (as the name says) for shading work and coloring. Their needles set up differently, liner machines got fewer needles that are set in a circle (to allow the work me bore precise) while shader guns got the needles positioned in a straight manner to resemble a comb (that will assist shading and coloring). Also, the speed of the liner guns is usually higher compared to shader guns.
On the other side, liner machines are less powerful because the shader tattoo machines use more needles to penetrate the skin, therefore, more power is needed to make the needles move with vibrant and continuous flow. This requires the weight of the shader gun to be higher due need to provide sufficient electromagnetic power. Every tattoo artist needs to get used to handling both kinds of machines because the liner and shader guns are essential in the tattoo art process. So get used to the “heavier and powerful” feeling of the shader ones and the lighter and faster of the liner kits.
Is it Safe to Buy Tattoo Guns Online?
Buying tattoo gun kits on the Internet is the same as every other online purchase you make these days – reliable, fast delivery, great price, and always larger assortment with a wide number of tattoo guns for sale to choose from. So, it’s pretty safe to order tattoo guns kits from the web. Later, we will review a number of great options for finding the best tattoo gun kit online.

Dragonhawk Mast Rotary Tattoo Pen Machine Kit Review
A great choice for a tattooing kit for amateurs and beginners alike. Our top pick. The Dragonhawk Mast Rotary Tattoo Pen Machine Kit is made of a Space Aluminum frame and custom Mast motor and its power supply fitted with the rotary machine. So, the kit comes with a power supply, all the needed cords, needles, and a control pedal. The kit is a “plug and play” in a sense however you may want to adjust the stroke depending on your application. What Equipment Do You Need to Start Tattooing
Every professional tattoo artist started in a different way. We didn't know either what and where to buy, how to choose, what to start your career with. So let's get acquainted with the basic list of all necessary equipment to start tattooing or, in other words, everything that your good and high-quality tattoo kit should contain in order to work with clients.
Tattoo gun and accessories
- The tattoo gun. The first, obviously, is the tattoo gun in the kit which will be your main tool. Whether you choose a rotary or a coil gun, it is important for it to do a good job: to apply the ink to the skin with the right power, but without unnecessary traumatization of the skin. This piece will help you choose a rotary or coil one.
- Needles or cartridges depending on the type of your tattoo gun.
- Grips. These are disposable or reusable, plastic or metal nozzles on the tattoo machine. The reusable metal ones do not dampen vibration, so you will need a bandage to work with. They require disinfection and sterilization. Disposable nylon and plastic ones are supplied sterile in disposable sealed packages. Their rubber grips dampen vibrations: make them comfortable to work with. Disposable grips should always be kept in stock.
- The power supply must work with your machine because, for example, Cheyenne does not work with all other brands of power supplies. You can choose a wired power supply or a wireless one. Its main task is to be powerful and work uninterruptedly. As the poor transmission of power to the tattoo gun will directly affect the quality of your tattoo and the comfort of your work. The quality of the power supply determines the longevity of the tattoo machine.
- A pedal is needed if you are working with a wired power supply.
- RCA wire or clip cord depending on the type of connection of your machine.
Consumables and hygiene
- Bandage rubber bands if you have opted for a coil tattoo machine.
- Barrier films for sterile and safe work.
- Tattoo inks have to be of high quality as you are working with human skin. Depending on the tattoo style you are going to work in, you need black, white tattoo inks, greywash, colored kits.
- Tattoo ink pouring caps. They are disposable and you need to have a lot of them. They allow you to dose the ink and provide convenience to the tattoo artist.
- The practice skin. If you are a beginner, you should practice on fake skin. There are many tattoo kits that come with fake skin.
- Transfer paper that transfers the drawing to the client's skin
- Tattoo marker - disposable, sterile, hypoallergenic
- Creams, gels, wipes, vaseline, film - everything that will help make your work more vivid, colorful and durable
So far, we have reviewed the TOP 9 tattoo kits. Well, here are the important factors to consider before buying a tattoo kit. Most of them played a pivotal role in compiling this list.
- Condition: Sometimes, the kit’s components damage in transit. While it may not be the seller’s fault, you should never bear the brunt. Therefore, you should ensure that the parts are neither defective nor damaged. If it is in good condition, you are sure that it will not harm your customers. That way, you are sure that they will enjoy your service. You should examine them closely before and after buying, especially if you are buying tattoo kit online.
- Ink: Ink is where it gets interesting because it is an integral component of the tattoo kit. One question that often pops up is, “How much ink can the handgun hold?” Keep in mind that some tattoos may require you to have enough ink per sitting. Therefore, you should always look out for those tattoo devices that can hold a considerable amount of ink before you refill them.
- Tubes and needles: Additionally, you have to consider the tube and needle because the former keeps the latter in place when they penetrate the skin. Out there, you may get the reusable and disposable models. In that case, you should keep in mind how easy it is to clean and sterilize it. Also, you should think of the number of needles it can hold because you need to surpass your customer’s expectations.
- Size: If you have to travel from one place to another to attend to your customers, you should consider getting a lightweight gun. The pen-like model is perfect in this context because you will not have a hard time moving it. If you do not consider weight as a challenge, then you can go for the bigger models. One thing you should keep in mind is that going for the heavier models means that you won’t be able to move it about.
- Power Supply: If you are going to tattoo a customer for a long time, then you need extra power to stay on top of your game. The essence is to have a machine that supplies you with enough power to run it for a long time. Be it the digital or analog model, you get to see the power load and foot pedal status. With that, you can adjust your device speed to get the desired speed.
- Brands:Indeed, some brands have set themselves apart from their competitors over the years. When you have their products, you are sure you have your money’s worth. They are reliable, long-lasting, efficient, and the list is endless. The good thing is that we reviewed some of them in this guide. They include Dragonhawk, Pirate Face Tattoo, Solong Tattoo, AW, EZTAT2, etc. You bear that in mind as well.
- Price:If you are on a budget, you still have some beginner-focused tattoo devices that you should give a try. However, the challenge you have to deal with is that they may not have topnotch features like the expensive, premium-quality models. Money is the store of value. However, the cheering news is that you can start with those affordable models and progress to the high-end devices over time.
