
Owners of Indianapolis catering companies quickly transition their business model
INDIANAPOLIS — Three Indianapolis catering companies have quickly transitioned from serving meals for dozens of people at one time, to family-sized meals ready for pickup.
One of the companies includes the popular Greek restaurant-turned-caterer — Santorini Greek Kitchen.
The owners of Santorini, Jeanette and Taki Sawi, are also the owners of Hoaglin Catering and MBP Distinctive Catering. All three operate out of the Biltwell Event Center, which the Sawi's also own.

When Jeanette and Taki Sawi announced the closure of their year-old restaurant in , the response from their loyal following base was remarkable.
"(Santorini) was something more than just a restaurant; it was something more than just a business," Jeanette said.
The Sawi's closed Santorini two years ago to pursue a more feasible business as they grew into retirement and opened the Biltwell Event Center on the near west side of Indianapolis.
"We couldn't do both. You can't give % to two different things," Jeanette said. "Biltwell was more of our retirement plan, or 'getting older and can't do restaurants anymore' plan."
As the Biltwell grew, the Sawi's acquired Hoaglin Catering and MBP Distinctive Catering. And soon after, the couple decided it was time to reopen Santorini's as a catering kitchen.
Jeanette said it was not necessarily about business. Even now. It's about the people behind the scenes and the people who continue to follow them.
"We had a fire back in back at our restaurant, and we had customers and friends that had brought us meals, casseroles, and food from Shapiro's I mean, I think only in Indiana can people do that! I mean they saw behind the business, and it's all people — it's people helping each other and getting it done," Jeanette said.
Since opening Santorini in in Fountain Square, the Sawi's have grown to not only be well reputable entrepreneurs but a Hoosier couple who believes in good food.
"It was always more than a business," Jeannette said.
The coronavirus pandemic has impacted almost every industry in the world. That includes events that were set to happen at the Biltwell, which the Sawi's catering companies were going to serve.
Although Jeanette is currently in Durham, North Carolina, while aiding her ailing sister for the foreseeable future, she could see that they had to do something for their beloved Indianapolis community.
The Sawi's decided to reopen Santorini's as more of a restaurant-style service, rather than only catering for a minimum of 50 people. Their cooks are back in the kitchen, cooking the Greek meals their loyal fan base has missed for two years.
"Buffets are one of the things that Taki loves, but right now, during the COVID era, we decided to do meals for a much smaller amount of people," Jeanette said.
All three of the Sawi's catering companies — Santorini, Hoaglin and MBP — are now offering single-serve meals for pickup. MBP does more comfort food, Hoaglin does various styles of food, and, of course, Santorini is Greek.
They're offering orders that can serve two to four people or even six to eight. All meals are chef-prepared.
"We've been very excited with the response," Jeanette said.
The beauty of technology is accurately portrayed right now, as the Sawi's had to work on improvising operations. Although they have a management team for Hoaglin and MBP, they had to cover Santorini. This means Jeanette is the one taking to-go orders over the phone while she is physically in Durham, North Carolina, while she looks over her family.
"I mean I had a friend call me from California, in Durham, to find out if it's true that we're doing food in Indianapolis — I mean it can be done. Whatever it is, it can be done. People can figure it out."
All three kitchens are offering $45 meal deals right now, which serves four people.
As for if the Santorini Greek Kitchen restaurant will officially open back up once COVID is (hopefully) a thing of the past — Jeanette hopes she and Taki can. It all depends on keeping up with their exceptional standard of serving only the best.
"We do big buffets about six times a year. And we always have a great turnout for those. But again, not everybody can come to them," Jeanette said. "So, I would like to be able to offer our food because its a legacy. As long as we can continue to do it, and do it well, I would love to offer it."
"We continually ask ourselves that," Jeannette said. "When all the dust has settled, who knows what will happen who knows what the state of restaurants will be in."

Amazing Venue & Staff
We had a great time with our wedding at the Biltwell. I love the look of the Dock/Deck/Den space. Our tasting was delicious, the linens were very nice, the staff did a great job on set up and tear down as well as dinner/bar services.

The Biltwell was INCREDIBLE!!!
The Biltwell Event Center was everything I could have imagined and more. I was blown away by the beauty and history of the venue. It allowed us to have a laidback, casual wedding. Our ceremony was able to be very intimate with the Biltwell's setup. We were able to have an indoor space and outdoor space for our reception. The customer service was beyond excellent. They were so helpful even when we were having trouble with outside vendors, they always stepped up to help. They were very responsive and truly listened to how we envisioned our day. The Biltwell is a gorgeous venue and you are truly able to make it however you envision your day. We barely had to add any decorations and it still looked amazing! I highly recommend them. Also, the price was great!

Absolutely amazing. I visited the Biltwell in August of while searching for a wedding venue. As soon as I walked in the main doors, I knew this was where I wanted to get married, and The Biltwell ended up being the perfect place for our wedding. Hayley was our wedding coordinator and she was amazing! She was so kind and helpful and was always in contact with us. I couldn't have imagined our wedding without her. The whole process leading up to the big day was smooth and easy, and the day of our wedding was everything I could have dreamed of and more. All of the staff were very professional and helped make the day absolutely perfect. I recommend The Biltwell to anyone and everyone looking for an event venue! You will not be disappointed.

Wow, wow, wow! You NEED to book this venue! Where do I even begin?! My husband and I got engaged in October and began looking into wedding venues that December. Originally, I thought I was looking for something very traditional, but happened to come across the Biltwell from a Visit Indy wedding venue brochure, and decided to make an appointment to check it out. I fell in love almost immediately, and shortly thereafter, so did my groom, and then my parents. Annie Meister and her team made my vision for a formal, dreamy, and romantic reception a reality beyond my wildest imagination. Annie was not only accommodating, honest, and professional, but I truly feel like we became friends throughout the process. She was always willing to sit down and talk about anything I or my mom were worried about, and she made everything so easy. She helped me with my decisions on linens and was eager to answer any questions I had the whole time. The day of, everything looked more beautiful than I could've dreamed it, and everything went off without a hitch. Annie even came onto the dance floor to clean up a broken glass herself at one point! There honestly aren't enough words for me to express my sincere gratitude to the Biltwell for being the perfect backdrop to my perfect day. I will never forget my experience!

Okay so truth-be-told, we haven't had out wedding YET. BUT so far my experience working with the Biltwell has been great. Not only is the space stunning with its exposed brick and original hardwood floors but they have been so accommodating. I want to serve a specific kind of sparkling wine at our wedding, that they would have to order onlinethey said no problem! I am so excited and really looking forward to our wedding there!

I booked the Biltwell for my 3nd of August wedding. Overall the space was fantastic and looked absolutely amazing. Everything we had envisioned. My lack of 5 star rating came from the switch of contacts half way through our planning process and some undisclosed prices or not included items that we initially stated we included. This is my first time planning a wedding and was surprised to see that some linens or tables weren't included in their quoted pricing (which included linens and tables). Taught me to ask specifics of what they classify as included. We were able to pick an outside caterer which was nice. Had to use their bar and that was pretty expensive.

Professional but not super involved
I was surprised by the amount of help they gave on my wedding weekend. I was originally told I would get a "day of" coordinator, which made me think that they would be working with me to make sure everything was going smoothly. No one approached me at my rehearsal at the building or day of our wedding. They were hands-off, and I ended up having my photographer be my "day of coordinator". They are professional in their service and communication.

Poor presentation
We signed a contract to have our wedding ceremony and reception at this location. The people we were originally working with, quit a month before our wedding. We were shown pictures and given descriptions about what our food presentation would look like, and it was nothing like that, the day of. We had a donut wall, that we paid quite a bit for, that was literally donut holes put up on a wall. We were shown a wall that held actual donuts, not donut holes. Our guests didn't even realize that it was food! They thought it was artwork. We also had a mac n cheese bar, that we were told would come out in cast iron skillets, but was just brought out in a normal metal pan. Maybe we were just picky, but when I'm told one thing, that is what I expect. When we attempted to contact them about this manner, no one responded to us. It seemed as though they had our money, so we didn't matter anymore.
