Wireless network ip cam

Wireless network ip cam DEFAULT

Network or internet cameras — usually marketed as IP cameras — are popular for keeping an eye on your property, your family, and your pets. These cameras provide live video and audio feeds that you can access remotely using an internet browser. But many IP cameras on the market are vulnerable to digital snooping, making security features key when you shop for and use these devices.

Before Buying an IP Camera

An internet protocol (IP) camera lets you monitor your home or business using software that connects it directly to the internet. Unlike a webcam, it doesn’t need a computer to transmit video online. But if the IP camera you buy doesn’t encrypt the information it sends, other people could access and view your feed. Put simply, you could be hosting the world’s biggest open house! When you’re shopping for an IP camera, you’ll want to put security features at the top of your list of priorities.

Secure Wireless Transmission

An IP camera in your home sends its feed to your home wireless router. A good wireless security protocol helps secure your video feed as it travels to the router. Look for a camera that supports current wireless security protocols, like WPA2.

Secure Internet Transmission

If you access your camera’s video feed remotely, your camera will send information beyond your home wireless router via the internet. Not all cameras provide the same levels of security for this. Look for one that encrypts your information, including your username, your password, and the live feeds. Check the label on the box or read online, or contact the manufacturer directly to see if the camera uses SSL/TLS, or some other industry standard, to protect your information in transit. If your camera uses SSL/TLS to protect your login credentials, the URL for the camera’s login page should begin with https (the “s” is for secure).

Multiple Users

If you plan to allow several users to access feeds from the camera, consider a camera that allows for different levels of access. For example, some cameras offer separate settings for administrators, who can make remote changes to settings like creating new accounts, setting passwords, and changing the direction the camera faces or the camera’s zoom function. Other cameras allow you to restrict when certain users can access the camera: You may want a friend to check on your home when you’re away, but not be able to access the camera when you’re in town.

Using Security Features

Once you’ve bought your IP camera, set it up with security in mind. Here’s how:

Keep the software up-to-date.

The software that comes with your camera needs occasional updates. Register your camera or sign up to get updates to keep the software current. Before you install your new camera, visit the manufacturer’s website to see if there’s a new version of the software available for download. And after you’ve installed the camera, download the updates as soon as you get notice.

Check your camera’s password settings.

Some IP cameras allow you to turn off the camera’s password requirement. But unless you want to share the feeds from your camera publicly, don’t do it. Set up your IP camera to require a password. Check the camera’s user guide for directions.

Use a strong password.

Choose a strong password that would be difficult for a stranger to guess rather than using the camera’s default username and password. Those default choices can be public knowledge.

Enable your camera’s security features.

If you bought a camera that encrypts data transmitted via the internet, turn this feature on. The log in page for your camera should have a URL that begins with https. If it doesn’t, the username and password you enter won’t be encrypted, and other people may be able to access them. Once you’ve logged in to your camera’s webpage, the URL still should indicate https. If it doesn’t, your feed isn’t encrypted, and other people may be able to view it.

Accessing the Camera from a Mobile Device

Before you access your camera from a phone or mobile device, be sure that the security features are in place for mobile access.

Confirm that your app is up-to-date.

Check the app developer’s website, or use your mobile app marketplace to check for updates.

Practice secure access.

Use a strong password, and consider logging out of the app when you’re not using it. That way, no one else can access the app if your phone is lost or stolen.

Password-protect your phone or mobile device.

Even if your app has a strong password, it’s best to protect your phone with one, too.

Use a secure Wi-Fi connection.

A camera’s mobile app might not provide the same level of security as its website. So, even if your camera uses https on its website, that doesn’t guarantee that the camera’s mobile app will use encryption, too.

If the mobile app doesn’t encrypt your information, and you use the mobile app on an unsecured Wi-Fi network, troublemakers could intercept your video feed or your password. To protect your privacy, resist using the mobile app from a public Wi-Fi hotspot. Instead, use your phone’s internet browser and go to your camera’s login page. Look for https at the beginning of the URL so you know your information is encrypted.

It’s also a good idea to change the settings on your mobile device so that it doesn’t automatically connect to nearby Wi-Fi.

Wifi Security Cameras: Pros and Cons

4. Wireless Signal is often accidentally jammed:

How often do you have a bad experience with FM radio? Static or cross talk on FM radio occurs rather frequently and is caused when the signal overlaps another signal. There are over non-overlapping FM radio frequencies.

WiFi was legally created when the FCC gave digital systems the ability to use part of the radio spectrum to send data. It works in the same way as FM radio but sends digital signals rather than analog. Ghz WiFi has three non-overlapping WiFi frequencies.

You should therefore expect to have interference and disruptions in your signal with WiFi.

5. WiFi is uniquely susceptible to Man-in-the-Middle Hacking:

Have you ever seen a spy movie where the hero (or bad guys) replaces the video feed of a security camera with a duplicate, fake feed? This is an example of a man-in-the-middle attack.

Man-in-the-middle attacks are impossible on hardwired systems. It would involve having to cut a wire, splice it, put a device in between the camera and the recorder/viewer, give that device a web-address that the firewall can accept, and do this all without anyone being aware of any interference. Most modern surveillance systems (ours included) have automatic emails and auditory alerts that tell you when a cable has been cut or damaged.

Wireless, however, makes man-in-the-middle attacks very easy to execute since all that is required is to spoof the end device's address and send the data in the same format.

You're probably saying "A homeowner would really never need to worry about man-in-the-middle attacks." You would be wrong.

In , a huge number of consumer-grade cameras were hacked and were utilized in a large scale man-in-the-middle hacking attempt. Unlike in the spy example, where the man-in-the-middle was a device in between the user and the camera designed to feed fake video to the viewer, most real examples of man-in-the-middle attacks don't care about video data.

Hackers don't want to watch your videos, they care about your financial data.

The consumer camera hacks that started appearing in , positioned the camera in between the users’ inputs (passwords, email addresses, banking logins, credit cards) and the internet. In these hacks, the camera's software was modified to be used as the man-in-the-middle to collect and transmit financial data back to the hacker(s).

SCW solves this issue by creating a separate air-gapped (military term for “completely isolated”) network through our recording devices (NVRs). This means that when connected to the NVR, you can watch your camera's footage, but there's no way to remotely execute code on the camera since the camera is not on your computer network.

Conclusion: WiFi cameras are really only meant to be used as baby or pet monitors. They are NOT meant for security.

Wireless for IP Camera Systems

What is the best wireless system for your IP camera system?

It depends on your system requirements.

When you can’t run network wire to the IP camera, you can use a wireless camera system.  Some cameras come with a built in radio, but any IP camera can be connected to a separate wireless radio.   Cameras with the built in radios are usually used indoors, while the cameras that use separate wireless radios are usually used outdoors.   Separate radios provide long range capability (over 2 miles), especially when using a directional antenna.

Wireless connections can use either Wi-Fi radios with a dedicated connection between two points, or 3G / 4G that uses the telephone wireless network.

Wireless IP cameras are popular in home applications. but are usually not recommended for commercial applications because of security and reliability concerns.

Solar power can be added to your wireless camera system so it can be used when power is not available.  Solar power systems are designed according to the number of cameras, your geographic location, and the number of hours you need to operate without sunlight (with batteries).  more &#;

Built-in Wireless Radio Cameras

There are a number of camera manufacturers that make IP cameras with built in wireless radios.  These are usually called wireless cameras.  They are mostly used in consumer applications and are not a good choice for professional security systems.  Here&#;s one example:

Sony SNC-CX

This indoor x HD Small form IP Camera, has an optional wireless connection. It includes a fixed degree horizontal view lens.  With a built-in speaker and MIC, you can have a conversation from your computer. It has a wide dynamic range (60dB+ WDR), so it can be used in challenging lighting conditions.

If you plug it into the network it uses PoE for power, otherwise, it uses the small power adapter that is provided with the camera.

Wireless IP camera works best when there is a line of sight to the access point that&#;s no more than ft away.

Wireless Radio for Your IP Camera

A separate WiFi radio can be used with any IP camera. Usually, we suggest using the same type of radio on each side of the connection.  One radio is next to the camera and the other is at the receiving point.

These wireless camera systems are usually used outdoors because of the extended range, but they certainly can be used indoors.  No matter where you use it, they work best when there is a clear line of site.

High-performance WiFi wireless radios have a range of many miles (or kilometers).  They include directional antennas and high transmission power that results in higher bandwidth and security.

There are a variety of radios and antennas available. Some of the radios have the antenna built into the radio while others use a separate antenna.  Most radios use frequencies of either GHz or GHz.  There are also other frequencies such as MHz and GHz available as well.   We usually recommend GHz radios for IP camera applications.  In remote applications where there may be limited power, it is best to select radios that use the least amount of power.

Our complete wireless IP camera systems include the radio with a directional antenna, camera, power system, and surge protectors, as well as network switches with PoE, special environmental enclosures and mounting brackets. Everything is designed for compatibility with power, electronics, and connectivity.

One or more IP cameras can be included in the wireless system solution. They can be fixed or PTZ type cameras.  Cameras are selected depending on your requirements and objectives.  The power can be provided by local AC power or by adding a solar power system.  Here are some examples of radios:

  • Eyes of Argus

A month now I have bought the WiFi camera RLCW. If you don’t try it, you really can’t realize how GREAT is that camera (I also have Argus camera, another wireless god). I never expected a CCTV Camera could have such a great lens and so crystal image & video quality!!! The motion detection function, if is set up the right way, it works perfectly with almost a zero number of “false alarms-recordings”. The setup of the camera was PLUG AND PLAY within seconds! About the app, I am happy too! To be honest I have iPhone and I was scared by the fact that apps with ip works better with less secure softwares like android devices but that isn’t true! When you launch reolink app the live view cam comes up! I love the fact that every morning I can check what happened last night. I was blind, I never thought that so many dogs visit my backyard and sleep on my car and scratch it(-_-). In the future I think that reolink should have a cloud so people to be able to see videos of previous days without the fear that burglars have broken down the NVR System. Great job Reolink guysas a customer I want to mention that you are not compared to any of the existing CCTV systems. It’s a multifunctional camera made for fulfilling the needs of our technological intelligent future!
