Navy starting salary

The U.S. Navy has both a lieutenant junior grade and a lieutenant. A lieutenant junior grade has a pay grade of O-2, the same as a first lieutenant in the Army, Air Force and Marines. A lieutenant carries a pay grade of O-3 and is equivalent to a captain in the other services. The U.S. Department of Defense typically issues pay tables on an annual basis that specify how much officers in the armed forces earn.

Military pay is not a single number. Service members receive basic pay that is determined by time in service and rank. They can also qualify for a variety of allowances that are intended to offset specific costs, such as off-base housing and subsistence. Certain duty postings may also qualify service members for special pay for the duration of the assignment.

As an O-2, a lieutenant junior grade has a starting salary of $3, per month. After two years in the Navy, basic pay increases to $4, per month. With three years of service, monthly pay is $4,, and with four years, it increases to $4,. With six years of service, monthly basic pay becomes $4,. This is the maximum allowed for the pay grade, and only a promotion to lieutenant permits an increase in earnings.

Minimum pay for a grade O-3, or a lieutenant in the Navy, is $4, per month if the officer has less than two years of service. Pay increases to $4, after two years, $5, after three years and $5, after four years. The six-year anniversary entitles them to monthly basic pay of $5,, which increases to $6, at the eight-year mark. With 10 years of service, pay increases to $6, per month, with an increase to $6, at 12 years. An O-3 reaches the maximum for the pay grade, $6,, at 14 years of service.

If an officer lives aboard ship or on a Navy base, housing and food are furnished. However, officers who choose to live off-base can receive a payment each month to defray their costs. Your housing allowance depends on the housing market where you're stationed, but there are average amounts to give you an idea of what you earn.

An O-2 with no dependents receives a monthly payment of $ for housing or $1, with one or more dependents. An O-3 without dependents receives $1, per month, and this increases to $1, with at least one dependent. Subsistence allowances, also called food allowances, are based on the officer's total number of dependents and range from $ to $1, monthly. If applicable, all military personnel could receive $ per month as a family separation allowance.

Career Navy aviators qualify for incentives ranging from $ to $ per month. Officers could qualify for hazardous duty pay of $ per month at pay grades O-2 and O Imminent danger pay is $ per month, and diving pay could add up to $ monthly. Submarine pay ranges from $ to $ depending on rank and years of experience, and sea pay ranges between $ and $ per month. To join the Navy as an officer, candidates must be between the ages of 19 and 35 unless candidates qualify for an age waiver for high-demand jobs. All officers must have U.S. citizenship, have fewer than three minor dependents and have at least a bachelor's degree with a strong grade-point average. When someone wants to join the Navy, he often approaches a recruiter. These professionals also speak at college campuses, high schools and other venues to attract qualified applicants to their branch of the Armed Forces. They respond to questions about the Navy, leave printed information with applications, and use such tools as social media.

As with all naval personnel, recruiters must first start out with five-and-a-half weeks of boot camp to learn the basics of life in the Armed Forces. Navy recruiters who are U.S. citizens, have a four-year degree from an accredited university, and who are between 19 and 42 years of age can go through the week Officer Candidate School to become officers. This grade starts at O-1 with the rank of ensign.
