How to Disable Roaming on the iPhone

Sometimes traveling internationally is necessary for business expansion and communicating with clients and business partners; however, international charges for wireless services can be astronomical, and disabling roaming on your iPhone is necessary. When you are outside of your wireless carrier's network, higher charges are imposed for services such as multimedia messaging (MMS), Web browsing, voice and text messaging. Turning off Voice Roaming and Data Roaming decrease the chances of excessively high bills.

Touch "Settings" on your iPhone's home screen and touch "General" from the Settings screen.

Choose "Network" to load the Roaming Settings.

Touch the "Data Roaming" button to disable data roaming while traveling to avoid charges with services such as Web browsing and picture messaging.

Touch the "Voice Roaming" button to turn off voice roaming. Turning off Voice Roaming.

Press the Home button to turn to the home screen.

  • Turning off Voice Roaming will also turn off Data Roaming. However, turning off Data Roaming by itself will not turn off Voice Roaming.

  • When you disable Data Roaming, apps that rely on a network connection will not work unless your phone is connected to a wireless Internet network.

iPhone & iPad: How to enable data roaming

Carriers are now offering ways to let customers use their phones while abroad without getting charged an absurd amount of money. While both iOS and Android still throw up huge warnings against doing so, it is possible to enable data roaming on your iPhone or iPad.

Follow along to learn how to enable this feature….

iPhone & iPad: How to enable data roaming

  1. Head into Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data, depending on country).
  2. Under Cellular Data Options, toggle Data Roaming into the on position.

If you’re lucky enough to have a carrier such as T-Mobile in the U.S., roaming becomes a very handy feature as the carrier allows unlimited text and 2G data in over 210 countries around the world. For certain carriers, you could even leave the toggle on indefinitely as they allow you to roam anywhere in the world without being charged. Of course, always check with your carrier before enabling the feature and make sure they don’t charge you outrageous fees for roaming, especially with data.
