CV15S High RPM problem

I picked up a JD LX255 at a great price but the guy was shady about what was wrong with it. I had to replace the head gasket and do a complete breakdown on the carb. At some point someone has tinkered with the linkages and it appeared that the carb had caught fire because the choke plate cap was melted and I had to put on a new choke kit.

I got it started and running, but it runs at dangerously high RPM. I have to move the throttle lever to the low throttle position to run it at the normal operating RPM. Moving the throttle lever up increases the RPM's significantly. I've also noticed a significant loss of engine power when the PTO is engaged.

The carb itself (Walbro) has two adjustment screws, a low idle on the top and a fuel mixture screw on the bottom right (in the picture). There are two adjustments on the linkage, what appears to be a low and high throttle limit. I've made minor adjustments to all of those adjustment screws just to see if anything changes and it did not.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There are two pictures of the linkage, one with the throttle in the high position and one in the low position.

Kohler CV15S Governor problem

Just finished repairing a B&S Intec V-Twin with same problem (governor not controlling the throttle, engine running massive RPM with butterfly open all the way). In troubleshooting, final conclusion, determined that mechanism inside the engine that operates the shaft that controls the governor linkage to the carb was not operating properly. Removed engine, removed crankcase cover, and found the centrifugal fingers on the governor gear disintegrated/broken/flew apart. Governor gear had also froze-up on the pin that it rotates on, which spun the pin in the block. This pin is suppose to be a press fit, or at least a knock fit into the engine block. This is something to check when you open your engine up, (the pin should not spin in the hole it mounts in.
This pin cannot be purchased as an individual part, It comes as part of the engine block assembly.
Maybe you will get lucky and just your internal governor gear assembly is broken and not working and all you have to do is replace the assembly, that is if your kohler engine has this same type governor set-up.
If your kohler engine has a pin that the governor gear spins on and this pin spins in its mounting hole, let me know and I will go into the detail of how to repair it

How to Set the Governor Setting on a Kohler Engine

Your Kohler engine's governor regulates, or governs, the speed at which your engine operates. It uses a mechanical centrifugal flyweight system that holds the engine speed constant even when load conditions change. You can set the settings on your Kohler engine governor in a few simple steps.

Step 1

Locate your governor. It is located on the left side of the engine as you face it if mounted on your vehicle. This side is also called the "starter side" because your engine's starter system connects here.

Step 2

Verify the throttle linkage rod is connected to the lever on your governor. You can identify the throttle linkage rod by tracing its length; the other end will be connected to the throttle lever on the carburetor.

Step 3

Loosen the nut that holds the governor lever to the cross shaft with your hex wrench. The cross shaft is located directly above the governor spring, which is the only spring on your governor so it's easy to identify.

Step 4

Push the governor lever towards the carburetor. This will cause the throttle to open wide. Hold the governor lever in this position.

Step 5

Insert your nail into the hole that has opened up in the cross shaft. Rotate the nail counterclockwise until it will not turn any further.

Step 6

Remove the nail. Pull the governor lever back towards the governor. Tighten the hex nut to a setting of 60 inch-pounds using your hex wrench.

Adjust the governor's sensitivity by turning the hex bolt on the right-side of your governor spring. To increase sensitivity, turn the bolt to the right, which will move the spring closer to the cross shaft; turn the bolt to the left to decrease sensitivity.

  • Increase your governor's sensitivity if you feel the engine is not maintaining speed properly.
