The mean annual wage for payroll and benefits managers was $101,130 as of May 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There were 24,580 of these employees in the BLS survey. The top 10 percent earned $160,240 or more a year, while the bottom 10 percent earned $53,370 or less.

The No. 1 industry in terms of salary for payroll and benefits managers was oil and gas extraction, which paid $145,030 a year on average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Computer equipment manufacturing was second in terms of pay, with a mean annual wage of $135,710. However, these two industries combined had only 130 such managers, which was less than 1 percent of the total.
State Salaries
California and New York were the two largest states in terms of the number of payroll and benefits managers, with 2,730 and 2,160, respectively. The pay in California averaged $111,300 a year, while in New York it averaged $124,330 a year. Rhode Island ranked first in average pay, with the 80 payroll managers working there earning a mean annual wage of $132,650.
2018 Salary Information for Compensation and Benefits Managers
Compensation and benefits managers earned a median annual salary of $121,010 in May 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
