One Piece: All 9 Blades Wielded By Roronoa Zoro

Roronoa Zoro is the Combatant of the Straw Hat Pirates and one of the strongest people on the crew, second only to Monkey D. Luffy. Zoro aims to become the strongest swordsman in the world of One Piece and to achieve this he has made it his goal to defeat the man who currently holds that title, Dracule Mihawk.

Being a master swordsman, Roronoa Zoro has wielded a bunch of different blades in One Piece already, some of which were with him for mere moments, while others have been in Zoro's possession for years now. Here are all 9 blades that Roronoa Zoro has wielded in One Piece.

9 Normal Dual Katana

Roronoa Zoro has always been a user of the famous Santoryu, also known as the Three-Sword style. Having received the Wado Ichimonji from Koshiro, Zoro would still need two more swords to complete the figures and for that, Zoro initially used two regular katanas.

During his fight against Dracule Mihawk, these two katanas ended up breaking. Since the Wado Ichimonji was an O Wazamono grade sword, it was able to withstand the severe blow that Mihawk delivered to Roronoa Zoro.

8 Johnny And Yosaku's Swords

After losing his swords to Mihawk, Zoro had to find a quick replacement in order to pull off the infamous three-sword style techniques. While the crew was fighting at Arlong Park, Zoro temporarily borrowed Johnny and Yosaku's swords.

He was seen fighting using these swords against Hachi. Although Zoro did struggle for a short while against the Octopus Fishman, it was because the wound that Mihawk gave him was still fresh. As a result of Zoro's carelessness, the wound ended up opening.

7 Wado Ichimonji

The Wado Ichimonji is a O Wazamono grade sword that Zoro received from Koshiro. Initially, this sword was supposed to be passed down to Kuina, a girl at Zoro's dojo who he lost to 2001 times. Due to her untimely death, Zoro took possession of the Wado Ichimonji instead, and in doing so, made a promise to himself that he'd become the greatest swordsman in the world.

RELATED: One Piece: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Gear 4th Luffy

To date, Roronoa Zoro still carries this sword, and it is likely that he'll carry it right until the day he manages to defeat Dracule Mihawk. During the time-skip, Zoro's control over its powers has grown magnificently, and it'll improve even further after the events of Wano Country.

6 Yubashiri

One of Roronoa Zoro's first few named swords, the Yubashiri was gifted to him by Ipponmatsu who was impressed by his courage during the Logue Town arc of One Piece. One of the Ryo Wazamono grade swords, Yubashiri was an extremely powerful sword, although not among the finest in the series. When it comes to being able to wield it, Yubashiri seems to be a rather obedient sword, unlike some of the others that Zoro had wielded.

Unfortunately, Yubashiri ended up getting destroyed by Shu, one of the Captains of the Navy, during the Buster Call at Enies Lobby. Zoro paid tribute to the sword after the events of the Thriller Bark arc and replaced it with another sword later on.

5 Sandai Kitetsu

The Sandai Kitetsu is another one of Zoro's powerful blades that he picked up at Logue Town. However, unlike Yubashiri, Sandai Kitetsu is a lower grade sword, being one of the Wazamono. Compared to Yubashiri, this sword is particularly hard to master, according to Roronoa Zoro. This is likely because the Sandai Kitetsu is a cursed blade, from the family of the Cursed Kitetsu swords.

However, just like any other blade, it doesn't take him too long to assert his authority over it. To date, Zoro has been wielding this sword and has been using its bloodlusted ability to slice through those who stand in his way.

4 Shusui

One of the strongest known swords in the entire One Piece series, Shusui was once wielded by the famous samurai, Shimotsuki Ryuma. After his death, the sword, along with Ryuma's corpse, was stolen by Moria, who later used it to strengthen his army. After clashing against Roronoa Zoro, Ryuma was impressed by his valor and ended up gifting it to him.

The Shusui is one of the 21 O Wazamono grade swords, making it extremely rare. What's more, it is classified as a Kokuto (black blade), making it more powerful than a regular sword!

3 Seppuku Blade

Roronoa Zoro found himself in trouble moments into the Wano Country arc where he was framed for murder. Asked to kill himself by committing Seppuku, Zoro was given a short blade without a tanto. As expected, instead of killing himself, Zoro used this blade to slaughter everyone who stood in his way, along with the magistrate, who was the actual culprit.

RELATED: One Piece: 10 Facts Everyone Should Know About Gear Third

Zoro's control over this Seppuku blade was magnificent, despite it being very short and hard to handle. He could even use Haki on this blade, further strengthening its powers.

2 Kamazo's Scythe

Once again, Zoro found himself one sword short during the Wano Country arc when Gyukimaru stole Shusui from him. While trying to get his sword back, Zoro was intercepted by a man known as Kamazo the Manslayer, who later turned out to be none other than Killer of the Kid Pirates.

To finish him off, Zoro took possession of one of his scythes and used it to perform a purgatory Onigiri, slicing through Kamazo. However, Zoro lost too much blood during the fight and ended up passing out in the process.

1 Enma

Enma was one of the swords of the legendary Samurai, Kozuki Oden of Wano Country. Along with Ame no Habakiri, Oden used this sword to perform his special 'Oden Nitoryu' style. After his death, his blades were passed on to his children. While Kozuki Momonosuke received Ame no Habakiri, Kozuki Hiyori got Enma, which she later passed on to Roronoa Zoro, who had just returned Shusui to Wano Country.

Enma is an extremely powerful sword, considered to be a blade that only a few are capable of wielding. This sword has a habit of drawing out all the Haki from the user's body. Consequently, the slashes sent out from this sword are much more powerful than intended, unless controlled properly. Zoro has been training to achieve perfect control over Enma and seems to have pulled it off as well.

Oda made a special cover celebrating the arrival of One Piece Chapter 1000.

As you can see below Zoro has three swords:

The swords Oda drew there are:

Wado Ichimonji

Is that a foreshadowing from Oda that Zoro will leave Wano with Enma, Wado Ichimonji and Shusui? Him gaining Shusui means that the Wano citizen recognised Zoro as a second Ryuma especially Gyukimaru who always denied the possibility of returning the sword to him.

One Piece Teases Zoro's Surprising Sword Swap

If there is one thing Zoro is stingy about, it is his swords. The Straw Hat plans to become the world's best swordsman, and he has racked up some truly powerful weapons to aid that quest. Over the years, Zoro accumulated three swords for his unique fighting style, but he lost track of Shusui when he came to Wano. And thanks to an emotional request, Zoro may leave the blade behind so long as he's offered another in its place.

Don't worry though! It turns out the blade Zoro has been offered is a powerful one.

Recently, One Piece chapter 953 broke down the issue Zoro has been faced with. A bandit managed to swipe the swordsman's Shusui given the history of the blade. It turns out Shusui belonged to the greatest warrior which Wano ever knew. After the swordsmen died, the sword went with him, but foreign robbers desecrated the grave to take the sword with them. Many consider the loss of Shusui to be the cause of Wano's downfall, and Hiyori is the one who offered Zoro a blade in exchange for his stolen on.

"Zolojuro, if your sword truly is the legendary Shusui, please return it to Wano," Hiyori asked before making a special offer.

"I will give you another in return!! The katana I received from my late father. The sword is called Enma!! It is a legendary katana, the only one to have ever wounded Kaido!!"

Of course, this deal is a curious one. Zoro has pride in his swords, and he has grown attached to Shusui since he acquired it. However, Zoro is very interested in taking down Kaido, and Enma is said to be the only blade that can wound the Yonko. The hero might hate to say goodbye to Shusui given their history together, but Enma would be a very worthy replacement. Now, fans will just have to wait and see if Zoro accepts the offer.

So, do you think Zoro should make this trade? Let me know in the comments or hit me up on Twitter @MeganPetersCB to talk all things comics and anime!

Eiichiro Oda's One Piece first began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997. It has since been collected into over 80 volumes, and has been a critical and commercial success worldwide with many of the volumes breaking printing records in Japan. The manga has even set a Guinness World Record for the most copies published for the same comic book by a single author, and is the best-selling manga series worldwide with over 430 million copies sold. The series still ranked number one in manga sales in 2018, which surprised fans of major new entries.

Shusui is an article written by BQD.

Official English Name:

Clear Autumn Water

Long Sword, Black Blade

Shusui was the legendary sword that was used by Ryuma to defeat a dragon centuries ago. Although the sword was later stolen by Gecko Moriah, a former Shichibukai who was known as a grave robber, Roronoa Zoro returned Shusui to Ryuma's grave in Wano Country during their battle against the former Yonko, Kaido. However, during the course of the Wano Civil War, Ryuma's grave was disrupted and the sword was misplaced and thought to have been lost forever. During his expeditions across the New World, Almasy D. Laszlo uncovered the sword, and supposedly fled from Wano. Since then, he has been in possession of Shusui.

Because of his possession of Voice of All Things, Laszlo was subject to the voice of the rage-filled blade. Using the power of the Horo Horo no Mi, he manifested the spirit of the blade by honing into its voice, allowing him to access its strength in ways that even Ryuma couldn't. Empowered by his ability to interact with the spirit of Shusui, it lends itself and its power to Laszlo, greatly strengthening his abilities.

The Horo Horo no Mi has demonstrated the ability to create ghost with varying different effects, such as causing depression, serving as surveillance, or exploding. Using his ability to hear the voices of objects, items, etc., Laszlo has been able to create ghost and spirits to give physical form the voices muttered by his items. Having done this to Shusui, Laszlo has managed to empower his blade by manifesting its spirit physically, giving it abilities that it didn’t have when the former pirate hunter and legendary samurai used it. One of the primary abilities provided by Shusui is that Laszlo can physically communicate and interact with its spirit.

Therefore, the blade, which has grown alongside its previous wielders, can share its experiences with Laszlo, which lends him the power and skill of its past wielders. Thus, Laszlo has managed to demonstrate skills that both Zoro and Ryuma possessed in their lives, such as Ryuma’s mix of Kenjutsu and Battojutsu, as well as Zoro’s three-sword style which has remained scarce among swordsman even today. Because Laszlo has acknowledged he lacks the technical physical skills that both, Zoro and Ryuma had built in their lives, he exhausts much more stamina to use and maintain their techniques than they otherwise would. However, by using their techniques, Laszlo has simultaneously noted that his own swordsmanship and physical abilities have become much more polished and stronger, therefore it is implied that his possession of Shusui passively increases his abilities.

"Shusui" has been featured, meaning it was chosen as an article of interest.

Shusui is one of the 21 Great Grade swords and a "Black Sword/Blade" (黒刀,Kokutō?) that was once wielded by the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma. It is prized as the national treasure of the Wano Country.[3] After his death, the katana was buried with Ryuma, until his grave was robbed by Gecko Moria 23 years ago.[4][5]

Ryuma appeared as a zombie on Thriller Bark, who had been givenBrook's shadow. After his defeat, Ryuma bequeathed the sword to Roronoa Zoro, and said he was satisfied with Zoro as the sword's master.[6] The sword then replaced Zoro's Yubashiri which was destroyed by Marine Captain Shu at Enies Lobby.[7] It was then stolen by Gyukimaru and returned to Ryuma's grave. After that, Zoro agreed to leave Shusui behind to replace it for the offered Enma by Kozuki Hiyori.

One Piece: All of Zoro's Named Katanas Explained

Roronoa Zoro's Three Swords Style requires him to use three swords at once, and he has owned a lot of good swords. Here are the named ones.

Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga is continuously growing by leaps and bounds. It has even recently met its biggest achievement yet—reaching almost 500 million copies in circulation worldwide. Even after being serialized for more than two decades, the series' popularity hasn't dawdled and regularly gains the top spot in ranking and sales. Especially now that Oda himself has confirmed that the ever-growing world of One Piece is soon to reach its ending, the fans are on the edge of their seats watching the story reach even greater heights.

After running for more than two decades and reaching more than a thousand chapters, the series has introduced a slew of characters. If that's not amazing enough, most of those characters are still alive and making appearances in the series. Since One Piece is set in a world of primitive guns, another popular weapon of choice are swords and blades. Most of the characters wield swords, especially minor characters without any big roles like the marines and unnamed pirates. Of course, some of the fan favorites are also swordsmen. Dracule Mihawk, the world's strongest swordsman, Red Hair Shanks, and, of course, the Straw Hat's very own Roronoa Zoro, have all chosen the sword as their main weapon. Now that the series has reached the final act of the Wano Country Arc, more swordsmen are joining the list. Zoro has even acquired a new katana. Since he uses a sword style that requires three swords, Zoro has had a good list of katanas under his belt. Here are all of the named swords he has ever owned.

Wado Ichimonji

Zoro's first ever named sword is already of great quality. Wado Ichimonji is one of the 21 Great Grade Swords, which is only inferior to the Supreme Grade Sword. Its story dates back to his childhood. It was forged by the legendary Shimotzuki Kozaburo, who also forged Enma, and has been in the possession of Kuina and her family. Zoro first meets Kuina when he is a child hunting dojos. He believes that a swordsman's strength depends on how many swords he wields, so he uses as many bamboo swords as he can against Kuina. Needless to say, Kuina hands him his ass. Kuina's father then takes Zoro in as a disciple, and Zoro eventually becomes Kuina's friend and rival. However, Zoro's childhood isn't filled with sunshine and rainbows. He challenges Kuina in a real swordfight using a real katana, wherein Kuina uses Wado Ichimonji. Kuina defeats Zoro one final time, then she and Zoro make a vow that he will get as strong as her. They also promise that no matter the gender, one of them will be the greatest swordsman in the world.

However, Kuina dies an untimely death the next day. Zoro, lost in grief, cannot accept her death. He then requests Wado Ichimonji from his master, who gives to him. Since then, Zoro has been wielding Wano Ichimonji through his adventures. Its sharpness and durability proves itself during his fight with Mihawk. After taking Mihawk's attack without Haki to reinforce his katanas, only Wado Ichimonji remains intact.

Sandai Kitetsu

After losing two of his katanas in his battle with Mihawk, Zoro goes shopping for more in Loguetown. That's where he first meets Tashigi, the marine who's a sword fanatic and also the spitting image of Kuina. Despite looking exactly like Kuina, Tashigi's personality is nowhere near the same. She even tells Zoro that she doesn't approve of him using a great katana like Wado Ichimonji and vows to get it. When Zoro finds a shop selling katanas, he asks the owner for the cheap swords since Nami didn't give him much spending money. Out of the barrel, he chooses Sandai Kitetsu. Tashigi, being knowledgeable about everything sword, immediately recognizes it. It turns out that Sandai Kitetsu is a Grade Sword. Even if it's a Grade Sword, it's the named sword with lowest quality Zoro has ever used. Tashigi further explains that even though its quality is great, it's cursed just like the other Kitetsu sword. It's said that whoever wields a Kitetsu sword will die an ugly death. However, such curses doesn't bother Zoro. He decides to test whether his luck or the sword's curse is stronger. He throws the swords into the air, then stretches out his arm. Instead of his arm being cut off, Sandai Kitetsu missess it by a hair's breadth.

After witnessing Zoro's feat, the owner of the katana shop decides to give their family heirloom to Zoro for free. That family heirloom is Yubashiri, a Skillfull Grade Sword. With Yubashiri and Sandai Kitetsu, Zoro once again has three swords for his Santoryu style. This time, however, his swords are far superior to his previous katanas. During their raid on Enies Lobby to rescue Nico Robin, Zoro and Usopp are handcuffed together. Because of this, Zoro isn't able to use both of his hands to fight, so he tells Usopp to grab Yubashiri and hold his arm. Zoro then uses Usopp like an arm extension and calls it Hana Arashi. During the same battle, Shu, a marine captain who has eaten the Rust-Rust Fruit, gets a hold of Yubashiri and corrodes it into a pile of rust. The only thing that remains after that is a small blade and a hilt. Zoro finally puts it to rest on the Rumbar Pirates' gravesite on Thriller Bark.

Related: One Piece: Zoro Just Revealed He Can Steal His Allies' Techniques

Lacking another sword, Zoro continues his travels with the other Straw Hats to Thriller Bark, the place where he lays Yubashiri to rest. Along the way, the Straw Hats meet a talking skeleton, whom Luffy casually asks to join his crew. They get to know Brook and learn about Thriller Bark and Gecko Moria. Brook tells them about his constant losses against the legendary samurai who has his shadow. Eventually, Zoro meets Ryuma, the legendary samurai from Wano Country. They clashed swords, and Ryuma recognizes Zoro as a worthy swordsman. He leaves his sword, Shusui, in his hands. Shusui, however, isn't just any ordinary sword. Like Wado Ichimonji, it's also a Great Grade Sword. Not only that, it's also a black sword like Mihawk's Yoru and considered as Wano Country's national treasure. When Ryuma dies, Shusui is buried alongside him. However, Gecko Moria steals his corpse and Shusui and gives him Brook's shadow, thus giving him another chance to roam around. Along with Wado Ichimonji and Sandai Kitetsu, Shusui once again completes Zoro's three swords. However, it's traded for Zoro's next sword.

As a replacement for Shusui, Kozuki Hiyori gives Enma to Zoro with the promise that Zoro will return Shusui to Ryuma's grave. After testing Enma's capabilities first hand, Zoro agrees to Hiyori's proposition. Being a match to Shusui, it's needless to say that Enma isn't just an ordinary sword either. It's been passed onto Hiyori by his father, Kozuki Oden, himself. It's also a Great Grade Sword like Wado Ichimonji and Shusui, though it isn't a black sword yet. However, it's said that once Enma's blade has been turned black, it may increase in rank and become a Supreme Grade Sword like Mihawk's Yoru and Whitebeard's Murakumogiri. Enma also has a peculiar ability. It sucks its wielder's Busoshoku Haki, which often results in an attack stronger than intended. Being wielded by Kozuki Oden, it manages to cut through Kaido's almost impenetrable defenses and leave a scar. In Zoro's hands, it manages to bring out a similar attack. Even Kaido recognizes Oden's presence from it.

At present, Zoro's current swords are Wado Ichimonji, Sandai Kitetsu, and Enma. With the Wano Arc yet to end, One Piece may reveal yet another katana for Zoro. After all, he's currently in the land of samurais.
