Ford Mustang - Power Steering Fluid - Vehicle Specific

Power steering fluid is a hydraulic fluid that is used to pressurize the steering system. Your power steering system helps you turn your steering wheel more easily. Checking your power steering fluid regularly is the easiest way to maintain your power steering system. Possible signs of low power steering fluid include a whining, squealing, or clunking noise when steering. At O'Reilly Auto Parts, you can use our “Select A Vehicle” feature to enter your make and model and find the right type of power steering fluid for your car.

Yeah, I think the idea you have about the disconnecting the low pressure hose will work. Just don't let it run dry for more than several seconds. Don't wanna screw up the pump.

Or, I guess you could just get a rubber bulb and pull it out OR stuff a big rag down in there and soak up as much as possible. Then add new fluid run car (while turning steering wheel from side to side) a few minutes and then soak that stuff out and repeat till it's clear enough for ya.

It's hard to tell from this pic, but my current power steering fluid is very brown. I'm also wondering if it's overfilled?

      Mike,

I would recommend the Type F fluid for the power steering. The brand is up to you, as it's doubtful it will make much difference.

I would recommend a complete drain of the system, then I would recommend you back flush the system to remove any contaminants from the system. You can remove the pressure line and return lines from the pump and then using compressed air blow through the return line with everything coming out of the pressure line. Make sure to only use psi of air so that you don't damage anything and so the fluid coming out doesn't spray everywhere. I recommend covering the pressure line opening with a good rag down in a bucket to prevent a major mess.

Replace both of the lines as needed and reinstall. Fill the PS pump reservoir with Type F fluid. With both wheels up in the air with no weight on them and the ability to turn lock to lock. With the engine off, steer the wheels from lock to lock times. Make sure you check your fluid level every 5 full turns or so and refill as needed. Once you have done that, then start the engine and allow it to idle for a minute or two, double check your fluid level. Now turn the wheels lock to lock times and check your fluid level after each. It's ok to hit the lock, but don't hold the steering wheel there for an excessive amount of time. Also make sure to check for any leaks. Continue this until there appears to be no additional air coming out of the system, there's no jerking or shuttering in the steering wheel. Hopefully your noise level has lessened or subsided completely too.

Lower the car back to the ground and double check your fluid levels. Now take it for a test drive around the block and double check for leaks. Sometimes it can take several days of driving to get the last bit of air out of the system so make sure to check your fluid level every time you drive it.

      Best of Luck!

+1 on Type F. It is what the Ford C-II pumps were designed to use, and I have found that the pumps
run quieter than they do with any form of Dexron. I have not tried Mercon LV though. Being a highly
friction-modified fluid, and somewhat thinner than 'regular' Dex/Merc, it may also work.

Thanks guys and thanks Trey for spelling everything out for methat's exactly what I need. Everything is new on my system from the rack to the lines and the pump. Do you think I need to replace them again because of the contamination?

When I fire up the pump (with the lid off) to do the flush in post number 8, am I going to have to worry about fluid splashing out?

When I disconnect the return line (with the car off) from the pump, I'm gonna lose all the fluid in the reservoir. Is that ok as long as when I turn the car on someone is continuously filling the reservoir (I don't want to run the pump dry)? When I add fluid at this point, it will get sucked through the pressure line, through the rack, and out the return line that I have held in a bucketright? It won't just dump out of the nipple where the return line was once attached? I'm assuming the pump running and me constantly filling with fluid will make said fluid run through the pressure line (and not right out that return line nipple).

Sorry, I've just never done this before and I don't want to make a mistake, a mess, or destroy anything. Thank you!
      Cheers!

Plug the bottom of the pump with a plug (return line port), or just hold your finger over it.

At home, I immediately climbed into the bath, not paying attention to the proposed dinner. Immersed in the water, I lay down, relaxing, looking at the mountains of foam covering the water. Before his eyes stood Pashkin's member, hard stroking him. Still, the last sex with my husband I had too long ago with sadness I remembered Probably the second week went.

    I reached for a shower.
