Young and Innocent is not one of the best-known or best-loved of the many innocent-man-on-the run thrillers made by Alfred Hitchcock. Personally I must admit to having a bit of a soft spot for this early movie which the director made while he was still working in Britain.
It is during his British years that we see the director beginning to assemble the components that would later be used to such great effect when he moved to America, and he was able to make productions on a bigger budget. However Hitchcock’s British period is not just of note for being the workshop where he learnt his trade. A few of the movies (notably The Lodger, The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes) are great films in themselves.
I would not regard Young and Innocent as one of his great films, but it has enough good qualities to be enjoyed as a film on its own merits, and is not merely of interest as a milestone in the development of Hitchcock’s directing style. As in Hitchcock’s other man-on-the run adventure movies, it contains gripping suspense, exciting set-pieces, mischievous humour and a storyline that offers a good variety of different setpieces.
The basic premise of the story is quickly established in the first two dramatic scenes. A man argues with his ex-wife. He is jealous of her relationship with a young man, and refuses to accept a divorce that she got in Reno. Her home is by the coast, and the crashing waves and thunder storm reflect the tempestuous nature of their relationship. Also of note at this point is a close-up of the angry husband’s eyes, showing us that he has a nervous twitch.
The next scene takes place on a beach where the body of the wife is seen by Robert Tisdall (Derrick De Marney), the young man whom the couple were arguing about the night before. Tisdall rushes to the body. When he sees who it is, he runs off, but he is seen by two curious girls.
They approach the body. As they realise what it is, they turn away in horror, and the camera cuts to a shot of a seagull, the screech of the bird replacing the screams of the ladies. (A similar trick was used in The 39 Steps, where a woman’s scream is covered by the sound of a train whistling).
Unfortunately for Tisdall, his behaviour in running away makes it look like he was running away after strangling the woman. He tries to tell the police officer that he went to get help, but the hostile girls insist that his actions were suspicious.
Worse follows. The woman was murdered with a belt similar to one on a coat that he owned, but which he has lost. The police discover that the penniless Tisdall has received money from the dead woman before, and that she has left him £1,200 in her will. Tisdall’s lawyer is incompetent and assumes that he is guilty, so Tisdall takes advantage of the crowds in the courtroom to make his escape so that he can hunt down the coat.
With the help of Erica Burgoyne (Nova Pilbeam), the local Chief Constable’s daughter, he visits the café where Tisdall lost his coat, and traces it to a tramp called Old Will (Edward Rigby). Will received the coat from a strange man with a nervous twitch, and the two young people enlist Will’s help to try to find this man and clear Tisdall’s name.
The movie is a joy to watch. It has a number of amusing moments – two police officers who have to contend with squealing pigs and a barking dog, an absurd fight at the café when Erica asks for help, and an attempt to pass Old Will off as a respectable man so that he can enter a hotel and look for the murderer. This involves dressing Will in posh but ill-fitting clothing. The vagrant is willing to help, even when this involves dancing very badly or bemusedly ordering tea at the hotel:
Old Will: Two cups of tea, please.
Waiter: Indian or Chinese, sir?
Old Will (confused): No, TEA!
There are good reasons why Young and Innocent is not one of the more popular Hitchcock thrillers. One lies in the casting. None of the actors in Young and Innocent became big stars in America. Nova Pilbeam was considered for the role of Mrs de Winter in Rebecca, but this role went to Joan Fontaine instead. In the case of Derrick de Marney, perhaps he was a little too odd to be sold as a regular romantic hero – his peculiar accent and mannerisms worked against him.
A more serious limitation affecting the film was its budgetary constraints. At times the movie looks a little cheap, with obvious back projections and toy models. Of course films can survive these charming weaknesses if they are able to offer something more. Young and Innocent does offer this, but it offers less in the way of serious themes or technical innovations than the best Hitchcock films. It is essentially a fun movie, and little more.
Nonetheless, Young and Innocent is not wholly devoid of substance. There are two notable themes in the film. The first of these is that of disguise. Throughout the movie characters adapt new identities or outfits to help them to elude notice.
I have already spoken about Old Will dressing up for the hotel. The hotel also contains the murderer, whose face has been blacked up as part of his stage act, and this helps to conceal him from Will’s searching eyes for a while. Earlier in the movie, Tisdall steals the glasses from his appropriately short-sighted lawyer and uses these to help him escape. Like Will, he struggles with his new identity, and we watch him crossing a street in a sideways crab-like movement.
However the most notable scene in this respect is one where Erica and Tisdall pay a brief visit to her aunt’s house. They stumble in on the birthday party of one of the children. The guests have dressed up for the party, but their disguises are nothing compared to the pretences that the young couple are obliged to practise on Erica’s suspicious aunt.
The perceptive busybody aunt soon realises that Erica and Tisdall are lying about his name and job. She also picks up on the fact that they have arrived without a present, and that they leave her house in the opposite direction to Erica’s home. The key moment here is a game of Blind Man’s Buff where they try to desperately sneak out while the blindfolded aunt is searching for them.
This image neatly symbolises the world of deceit that the naïve hero and heroine are obliged to practise, but it also illustrates the movie’s other main theme that is summarised in the film’s title. They are young and innocent, caught in a world where they are at the mercy of adults who may be either a threat or a help to them.
The casting of the two lead actors is significant here. Nova Pilbeam was a fresh-faced 18-year-old who had precisely the right air of guileless charm for the role. Derrick de Marney was a less obvious choice. He was 30 years old at the time, hardly that young, so perhaps the American title for the film, The Girl Was Young, was more appropriate after all. However his gauche and uncertain manner nicely conveys the idea of youthfulness.
Robert Tisdall (I may from now on call him Robert as he has earned that intimacy) has some of the self-assured cockiness of youth, complete with the lack of recognition of the dangers that his careless attitude may cause. He responds flippantly to accusations against him from the police and witnesses, and he betrays his hiding place to the police by insouciantly throwing a sandwich wrapper out of the window.
He is by no means unbearable however. When he could be making his escape, he instead helps Erica to push her car up the hill and even pays for her petrol, though he needs every penny to stay on the run. Later on he will show concern for her getting involved in the case, and a willingness to turn himself in for her sake.
Erica is the more responsible one, though with some of the precociousness of youth. She looks after her younger siblings and acts as mother, the real mother’s whereabouts being unknown. Indeed she is almost a prototype of Charlie, the heroine of Shadow of a Doubt. She is effectively head of the family, and tries to keep the balance between the inappropriate family members and the nerdy child.
She is upright and always ready to intervene with information gleaned from the Girl Guides, boxing matches etc, as happens when she treats Robert after he faints. As a chief constable’s daughter, she is known to all the police officers so she is under pressure to be a respectable member of the community.
As a result the young girl is conflicted by her feelings for the escaped prisoner. She initially does not believe Robert’s protestations of innocence, but she likes him enough to drop him off at an abandoned house where he can hide from the police.
However her youthful sense of compassion and ethics will not allow her to drop the matter there. We see her anxious face as she listens to her family discuss Robert’s likely capture due to his lack of money. She knows that he used some of what little cash he had to pay for her petrol. She decides to return Robert’s money and bring him some food, but this soon escalates into assisting him to keep away from the police while he investigates his missing coat.
This connection soon compromises the well-meaning girl, and I suspect that an older woman would have had the sense to avoid getting into this situation. Her suspicious aunt phones her father who asks a police officer to watch out for Erica. When the officer recognises Robert, Erica is reluctantly forced to join him on the run.
Eventually she is captured by the police after her car is caught in a collapsing mine, and she has to take the consequences of her impetuous behaviour. Her father decides to resign his job, and she is distraught. It is only at the end of the movie when Robert is cleared that her actions are finally seen to be justified.
Such are the themes of Young and Innocent, but it also contains a few of the enjoyable setpieces that Hitchcock handled so well. Two stand out in particular. One is the scene that I briefly mentioned. While they are being chased by the police, Erica drives into an old mine. However the ground gives way under the car, and it begins to sink. This is a dramatic scene as the camera cuts between ariel shots of Erica’s anxious face, Robert’s proffered hand that seems like it will never be able to pull Erica out in time, and the car sinking further into the ground.
The other notable setpiece is the movie’s closing scene. Hitchcock’s later thriller Notorious is famous for containing a long tracking camera shot that shows a wide shot of a crowded room, only for the camera to slowly and gently zoom in on a small object, a key in Ingrid Bergman’s hand. Well this trick had already been used by Hitchcock to similar great effect years earlier in Young and Innocent.
To set the scene, Erica has brought Old Will to the Grand Hotel, hoping that he will recognise the mysterious man with twitching eyes who gave him Robert’s coat, and who she and Robert rightly suspect is the murderer. However the ballroom area of the hotel is crowded with dancers and diners, and the two investigators are feeling helpless.
At this point, the camera cuts to a long shot of the ballroom showing a large number of people in it. The camera pans to the right. Our vision of the room begins to shrink as the camera starts to focus in, moving past the dancers to show us the band that are playing. Then the camera homes in on the drummer…his face…and finally all that we can see is his eyes which begin to nervously twitch. We have found our murderer.
As an added touch, the song that the band is playing is ‘No One Can Like the Drummer Man’, another clue that gives away the identity of the man we are looking for. It will take some time for the old tramp to recognise the disguised killer, but he recognises the tramp. Realising the purpose of Old Will’s visit, the killer becomes more nervous, twitching furiously, popping pills and playing out of synch with the rest of the band.
Finally he breaks down on stage and collapses. Once more Erica’s skills for helping fainting men are employed. She steps in to help, and she sees the distressed man’s twitching eyes. The killer’s make-up is removed, and Old Will confirms that this is the man they are looking for. In front of the police the killer laughs insanely and confesses his crime.
As is appropriate for a movie about young lovers, the film ends with Erica introducing Robert to her father and making plans to invite him round for dinner. In doing so it highlights what makes Young and Innocent such an appealing film.
There may be better Hitchcock thrillers to come, but this film has the freshness of youth about it. It is about young people, and it was made in the youthful stage of Hitchcock’s development as a director. There may be some infelicities of style, but there is still the excitement of a talented director finding new ways to make suspenseful movies.
With exposure to the internet from a young age, adolescent girls often seem to feel the need to be different from their peers nowadays. The term “not like other girls” has of late been celebrated as well as berated on the internet. Trends like the “not like other girls” trope, where adolescents try proving themselves different from the conventional portrayal of women in media, are gaining more traction, especially among those in high school. This trope can be seen in trends since the 60s with the greaser girl trend and in the 90s with the cool girl trope where girls try to glamorise traditionally perceived masculine traits by rejecting feminine standards. While some celebrate the challenge it pushes against patriarchy's normative standards, others berate it.
However, the main question that begs an answer is: Why do girls feel the necessity to do this at all? The general reservation modern feminists have with these tropes is that they arise from internalised misogyny. By calling someone “not like others”, you’re automatically implying that the comparison is with someone inferior, but internalised misogyny might not be the case for most stances.
These girls have developed such habits and traits for a core reason; they became hyper-aware of the patriarchy at a young age, and these “pick me girls” are not only trying to appease men, but they are trying to be treated as one. Not only are they different from other girls, but they also do not want to be treated like other girls. They are trying to escape society’s treatment of women by identifying with male gender norms and stereotypes.
The question that arises from this typical phase young people go through is: Why do young women not want to be associated with the mainstream feminine ideals and characteristics? That is because, to put it simply, it is seen as meaningless.
Teenage girls and women in general, in our society, seem to hold very little to almost no cultural capital when compared to men. Cultural capital is a concept used in sociology to describe an individual or certain group’s social assets, such as education, style of speech and dress, intellect, etc., which dictate their mobility in society. It is an idea that explains why women are conventionally expected to act and perform in specific ways as compared to men.
Even though young girls have a massive influence on the varying trends of the world, language, fashion and cinema, they hold little cultural capital in broader contexts. The interests of young girls are often belittled and seen as invaluable and insignificant. This has taken a toll on generations of women and what they are socially allowed to like or not like.
Young women initially popularised artists such as The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. It is as if their significance diminishes when seen to be supported by a girl fan base and when these artists are associated with older white men; their talents stop being trivialised. This can clearly be seen in the context of BTS as their fan base consists of a vast majority of young girls; everything from their music to their fashion choices has led to their unfair treatment in the industry. The entire basis of this treatment is that they are seen as ‘girly’. But what is wrong with having conventionally feminine traits?
This goes hand in hand with what men are socially allowed to do; being interested in feminine hobbies and ideals reduces their value as men. In contrast, men portray a macho image, while women portray a childlike, innocent and naive front. World experts at Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict found that most of these men end up in a pattern of abusive behaviour; and women, victims of abuse. These harmful traits in men such as; smoking, drinking and violence are glorified within such tropes instead of the criticism and analysis they deserve. Similarly, women get patronised for the same.
This phenomenon harms young men and young women and conditions them into a pre-packaged list of qualities. Still, it also encourages unhealthy competition between young girls to be different and constantly fight about who is worth better in our society. From an economic standpoint, most brands fully realise how important teenage women are towards their success, and they constantly profit off of them and their insecurities.
Young women dictate which brands are thriving; they influence what becomes popular and what does not. Young women are forced into feminine ideals as a way of fitting in rather than rejecting them by their own choices; this gives them a fighting chance to defend themselves against the clutches of patriarchy. Similarly, women are against such ideals as an act of rebellion against the same patriarchy.
We collectively need to realise why women confine themselves to these tropes and, instead of patronising them, empathise with these women as they constantly get beaten up at the intersection of capitalism and misogyny and realise where the core problem lies.

She was abused as a child. Now she’s on a quest for justice in girls’ unsolved murders
Most days, the girls walked to school together.
They were friends and neighbors: Jennifer Gross was 11, Christi Ondrejicka a year younger. But on Nov. 10, 1973, Christi was running late, and Jennifer went ahead without her.
She stopped into a candy store, and minutes later in an alley, a man abducted her and drove away with her. He stabbed her in the neck with a piece of glass and set her on fire.
It had been a brutal month in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. While 1973 had been drowned out for much of the country by the Watergate scandal, this small city north of Lancaster, was already reeling.
Jennifer wasn’t the first child murdered there that year.
When Christi's mother told her Jennifer had been killed, the girl sat on the wooden steps outside their apartment and wept. It didn't make sense. Jennifer had a happy family, a nice house, Christi thought. Jennifer was a good girl.
She thought, Why didn't he take me instead?
Return to the 1973 scene: Lebanon woman wants justice for all three children murdered
Paul Kuehnel, York Daily Record
As she grew into adulthood, she never settled on the answer to that question. Christi had suffered a different horrific crime: For two years in her childhood, someone outside her family had repeatedly molested her.
The memories of Jennifer became magnified decades later when Christi Ondrejicka, now Daubert, learned about the other murders: Jane Doe, a girl killed just a month earlier, and Peggy Reber, brutally murdered five years before that.
Just one of the three murders has been solved. And Daubert, who sees her own childhood trauma intertwined in each innocent child's brutal ending, is on a crusade for answers.
“What happened to them is far worse than what happened to me. They’re no longer here,” she said. “They died brutally, all three of them. And the fact that two out of the three murders are unsolved leads me to believe that nobody cares about children. It just reinforces that nobody cares what happened to me, either.”
Christi and her mother moved into an apartment on Chapel Street in 1973. Her parents were divorcing, and her dad’s house was just down the alley.
The second-floor walkup was in the backyard of the Gross family home.
Jennifer held an esteemed position on the school’s safety patrol, helping kids cross the street near Garfield Elementary School each morning. She and Christi became friends, hanging out in the neighborhood and walking to school together.
Lebanon, a small city, was a haven for the middle class in the 1970s, with a plethora of area jobs to keep families stable. The locals often refer to themselves as "stubborn Dutchmen" here, related to the area's Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and the stacked generations of families that have lived in the county.
On that November 1973 day, after Jennifer left for school alone, Christi passed over Fifth Street on her bike, but Jennifer wasn't there there to help children cross the street.
Later, Christi's mother wouldn't tell her the details of her friend's horrific murder, only that someone had killed her. That someone was James E. Frazier Jr., a 26-year-old man from Lebanon who had taken Jennifer into the woods, stabbed her in the neck with a broken piece of glass, and set her on fire while she was still alive.
He did it, he told one of his friends, because the 11-year-old girl wouldn't have sex with him.
When the police found him, based on witnesses’ descriptions of his car, Frazier claimed innocence, according to court documents. When police found a bloodied pair of pants in his home, he “made incriminating statements,” according to the police.
When she learned the news, 10-year-old Christi was wracked with grief and guilt.
"I just wanted to crawl in a hole and evaporate," Daubert said.
A jury found Jennifer's killer guilty of first degree murder in 1974. Three years later, after winning an appeal, he was found guilty again. He's currently serving a life sentence in the State Correctional Institute at Dallas.
But before Jennifer, one girl's death received virtually no attention; another exploded and has remained controversial for 53 years.
In 1968, Peggy Reber was killed in her mother's apartment, just blocks away from where Jennifer was abducted.
On Oct. 10, 1973, the body of Jane Doe, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, was discovered in a remote, wooded area near Fort Indiantown Gap. A tarp and brush covered her decomposing body. Officials believed she had been there one to three weeks.
Just one month later, James Frazier Jr. abducted and killed Jennifer Gross.
Daubert learned about the two other girls — and the lack of justice for what happened to them — as an adult. By then, she was no longer a victimized child grieving the death of a friend.
She was old enough, and outraged enough, to fight back.

What happened in the third-floor room of the Maple Leaf Apartment building made it into Lebanon's gossip mill long before a teenage girl was murdered there.
Men entered and left Mary Reber's apartment at all times of the day and night. She was believed to be "engaged in prostitution,” according to a grand jury report, but at the least, she led an unconventional life. Her 14-year-old daughter, Peggy had a 19-year-old boyfriend who frequently stayed in the apartment, and Peggy's twin sister was already married with a baby, according to court documents.
The Rebers' family life would become common knowledge after May 26, 1968, and it remains in the collective consciousness of Lebanon's oldest residents today. Mary Reber returned home in the early hours of that Sunday to find Peggy dead in her bedroom.
The teenager had been strangled to death with a ligature, then a recurve hunter's bow had been shoved into her body through her anal cavity.
Two years after the murder, Arthur Root Jr., a married man who had been in the Reber apartment with Peggy's mother multiple times, was put on trial. He had keys to the Reber apartment, as did several other men, and fibers from Root's clothing were found under Peggy's fingernails; his hairs were imbedded in blood stains on Peggy's dress and the apartment floor, according to a grand jury report.
A jury acquitted Root, and the lack of resolution tormented Lebanon in the decades that followed. In 2008, then-District Attorney Dave Arnold convened a grand jury to investigate the murder, responding to public pressure spearheaded by Michelle Gooden, a Lebanon native.
That's when Christi Daubert learned about Peggy's brutal murder, and immersed herself in the case. It had been 40 years since the teen's death, and in that time, Daubert had married, divorced and raised two children.
Gooden, a former classmate of Daubert, was one of the people subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury.
She had been asking questions around town and scouring public records — and Daubert would eventually follow in her footsteps. Gooden built a social media page to memorialize Peggy, even though she — like Daubert — was only 5 years old when Peggy died.
The grand jury's answer satisfied neither woman: "Given the passage of more than 40 years since the murder and the pervasive taint associated with the investigation, we firmly believe that only a detailed and corroborated confession and/or the existence of compelling forensic evidence could lead to a final resolution of the case," the grand jury said in its final report.
Four years later, Gooden wrote a book about Peggy's death, "Justice Denied."
"I’m very passionate about it," she said. "Until I take my last breath, I’ll be passionate about it."
Daubert has scoured the pages of that book looking for her own clues, highlighting passages that lead to more questions for her. She has a box of newspaper clippings and photographs of the unsolved murders. As she rifled through the box on her back deck recently, she narrated in a monotone the stories of witnesses, mysterious circumstances around some of their deaths, a car that followed her into a cemetery one day and the worries of friends and family that she's putting herself in danger by talking about it all.
"I lose sleep over this crap," Daubert said, in her cozy house just a couple of miles from where Peggy and Jennifer died. "It’s affected me all over again. I never really dealt with the trauma from when I was a kid. Now learning all these other details over the past decade, it really takes a toll on me."
Over the years, she had shared with only a few people that she had been molested as a child. No one had even guessed. Daubert's mother once gave her old pictures of the person who molested her, and she took them outside and burned them.
She didn't see a counselor or look to others for support; she worked for the county's Children and Youth Services office for a time, and she ached over the child abuse she saw around her.
Daubert thinks Peggy's death is related to the murders of the two other girls: Jennifer and the unidentified girl found under a tarp at Fort Indiantown Gap. She believes the same man may have killed all three.
"If what I think is true and these things are connected somehow, I want that to be put out there, to make sure that it never happens again," Daubert said. "I know we’re not gonna end child abuse, but we sure could do a better job here than we are doing."
Nathan Trate also considered whether there was any connection between the three murders.
Trate is a Pennsylvania State Police sergeant who has been involved in the cold case investigation of Jane Doe since 2012. When Christi Daubert called him a few years ago to talk about possible links, he had already been weighing it, he said.
"I feel for her because of how close a friend she was with Jennifer," Trate said.
Trate and a retired corporal visited Frazier in jail. The man admitted to "a lot of things," Trate said, but not to Jane Doe's murder. He eventually re-interviewed Frazier about Jane Doe, and with the then-district attorney's permission, offered him a letter of immunity for information about her death.
Trate spoke with the lead investigator on Peggy's murder as well and studied the Jennifer Gross murder in search of threads that would tie all three deaths together. But the threads, he said, never materialized.
"We could never find any linkage whatsoever, and we did look at it. And I did consult with multiple criminal investigators about it who work cold case homicides," Trate said. "What is the possibility of all three happening so close and such close timing? It’s one of those things after I got done interviewing him. I don’t think it’s him."
In 2016, Trate led an exhumation of Jane Doe's body, and her bones went through isotope testing. It was determined that she wasn't from Lebanon; most likely she came from the southeastern part of the United States, Carol Schweizer told the Lebanon Daily News in 2017. Schweizer works for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
The state police have recently received a grant to conduct DNA testing on Jane Doe's remains again, and they've sent her bone and hair samples to a lab. The police had never had a sample size large enough for testing, but the process has improved and requires less of a sample. Trate hopes new testing, with results expected in six or seven months, will narrow the search to a family lineage.
Frazier has never been charged in the murders of the two other girls.
In the Peggy Reber case, a great deal of evidence was ruined when the Hurricane Agnes flood of 1972 reached the county courthouse, Trate said.
Gooden believes that the investigators should have looked more closely at one of Peggy's relatives, but the grand jury ruled him out.
Daubert still believes the man who killed her friend Jennifer, James Frazier, who is still alive and imprisoned in Pennsylvania for life, may be the one who killed both of the other girls.
When Lebanon police found a 12-year-old boy's body in his home last year, allegedly starved and beaten to death, Daubert's mission to save child abuse victims intensified.
Max Schollenberger had been locked in his dark bedroom for years, according to law enforcement. He died about 5 miles from where Peggy was killed and Jennifer Gross was abducted and about 9 miles from where Jane Doe's body was found.
Another child victim for Daubert to grieve.
"There are a few people who care, and most people don’t care enough," Daubert said. "Or the people that have the power to change things don't care."
She felt the same about the victims of childhood sexual abuse, people like her who had held in their secrets for years. When the fight started over the statute of limitation extensions for childhood sex abuse crimes, Daubert quietly got involved, meeting with her state senator to change the law.
"A lot of things, over time, they go away or you get over it, so to speak. For me, I never got over that. I have severe trust issues. I don’t trust anybody in the world except myself, and Mike Folmer reinforced that big time," she said.
Folmer had listened to Daubert's plea for a change in the law. He invited her to lunch to discuss it further, and she told him about her childhood abuse, she said. His sympathy had an impact on her.
"He texted me: 'Let’s do what’s best for those poor victims,'" she said, and she believed his sincerity.
That version of the legislation did not pass, then suddenly, Folmer was arrested on child pornography charges and later pleaded guilty.
Dauber felt sick at Folmer's arrest. She has had a lifetime of trust issues, and this reinforced everything she feared.
"I was just so angry and felt so betrayed," she said. "A tremendous sense of betrayal, especially with someone with his position."
Daubert has battled the lasting effects of her trauma: She's never had a long-term relationship, and she doesn't trust most people, especially with her own children and grandchildren.
"I just have a hard time and this overwhelming sense that I’m not good enough or tainted somehow, even though most people don’t know. But I know," she said.
It makes her fight harder.
"Part of this comes from keeping it buried for so long and not letting that child grieve for what was happening to her," Daubert said.
She says she's been told by others not to dredge up these past murders, that there are powerful people who don't want the truth to be known, especially about Peggy Reber's murder. There are secrets, she's heard, that are better left hidden.
"I’ve been told to shut up," she said.
But she doesn't plan to end her crusade. The box of research she's gathered to study and highlight and review remains ever-present in her life.
In April, the accused killers of Max Schollenberger are to appear in court, and Daubert will be watching. A guilty conviction would not bring back Peggy or Jane Doe or little Jennifer Gross. It would not undo the damage done to little Christi Ondrejicka.
But for at least one child, it would mean justice.

WILLS POINT, TX – GFA World (Gospel for Asia) founded by K.P. Yohannan, which inspired numerous charities like GFA World Canada, shares how COVID-19 has triggered a “shadow pandemic” of sexual abuse, violence and exploitation against girls, a shocking new report reveals on International Day of the Girl Child, Oct. 11. More than ever, girls face multiple threats to their safety, including sexual predators online, sex trafficking, and forced child marriage, says the report Young Victims Remain Hidden in the Pandemic’s Shadow (http://www.gfa.org/press/girls) by mission organization GFA World (www.gfa.org). International Day of the Girl Child is an annual awareness event.
In more than 130 countries — including the U.S. — it’s legal for girls to marry under the age of 18. In North Carolina and Alaska, a girl can marry at 14 if she’s pregnant. In North Carolina, a 57-year-old man applied to marry a 17-year-old girl, the report says.
Worldwide, COVID-19 is accelerating a “global crisis for girls,” with surging joblessness and poverty putting pressure on struggling parents to marry off their daughters in their mid-teens or younger, the report says.
Millions of Girls ‘Exposed to Exploitation’
Globally, national lockdowns have disrupted schooling for millions of girls, and left them exposed to exploitation and greater risk of getting pregnant.
Save the Children predicts a “dramatic surge in child marriage and adolescent pregnancy.” The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that complications in pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death in girls and young women ages 15-19.
Governments around the world must do more, GFA World says, to protect girls from forced marriage so they can finish school and choose their own path in life when they become adults.
‘Protect Innocent Girls Now’
“If we fail to protect innocent girls now, we’ve failed an entire generation,” said GFA World Founder K.P. Yohannan (also known as Metropolitan Yohan).
The Dominican Republic — a Caribbean island nation — recently banned marriage under the age of 18, a move it’s hoped will protect girls there and could encourage other nations to follow.
In the U.S. and other countries, girls are increasingly victims of online sexual exploitation. A 14-year-old girl who sent a classmate a naked video of herself attempted suicide after it was posted on a porn website and viewed by other students. “Failing to stay safe online could entrap a girl in years of abuse,” the report says.
Lifeline for Girls at Risk
In developing nations, GFA World and other organizations sponsor thousands of girls at risk, enabling them to go to school, making sure they don’t go hungry, and mentoring them. GFA World says it helps girls “to show them God’s love.”
“It’s more vital than ever to provide girls with safe, nurturing environments and to bring justice and aid to those who’ve been abused,” says the report. “The pandemic will have years of consequences but, with God’s help, we can prevent it from destroying girls’ lives.”

And girls young innocent
‘Less innocent, more adult’: the unfair perceptions that haunt young black girls
Seventeen-year-old Sewa Olukoga was recently on a school trip in Portsmouth when she noticed she was being followed. “It was me and one other black girl in the class. We were in the shopping centre, and the security guard was watching us, suspiciously. It always happens. He was following us around the store.”
According to Olukaga, “It’s not that we’re loud, we just have a presence. We’re always being told to dial it down a little bit.”
Anecdotally, her experience and those of other young black women who have grown up in Britain appear to correlate with the latest studies in the US. A new book, Pushout: the Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools by Monique Morris, highlights the disproportionate levels of punishment meted out to black schoolgirls, who make up 16% of female students but more than one-third of all girls with a school-related arrest.
I always got straight As ... yet my teachers perceived anything I did as being really aggressive, really angryYewande Adeniran
The reasons are complex, but may be linked to recent research by Georgetown Law’s Center on Poverty and Inequality, which found that adults view black girls as “less innocent” and “more adult-like” than their white peers.
The Georgetown academics surveyed adults from diverse backgrounds and drew a range of conclusions, including that adults think black girls, especially between the ages of five and 14, need less protection than white girls, know more about sex and need less nurturing than white girls. This mirrors previous research in the US which has found that, from age 10 onwards, black boys are more likely to be viewed as older and guilty of suspected crimes than their white peers.
Yewande Adeniran, 23, had a particularly tough childhood thanks to her skin colour, and believes the Georgetown study reflects her experiences. She was the only black girl at her boarding school apart from her sister, and says she was immediately singled out:
“I’d get put into detention for things my white female peers didn’t. We’d just be in class chatting – and I always got straight As, so it wasn’t like I was being bad – but I’d be sent to isolation. I had a teacher who picked all of the people of colour out, and the only outwardly gay person too. He moved me down a set and said, ‘We don’t want too many of your kind of people in the top set.’”
It may sound like the stuff of 1950s racist nightmares, but this was in the 2000s. Perhaps Adeniran’s treatment forced adulthood upon her faster than it should have come, the perception of a lack of innocence becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy?
“They perceived anything I did as being really aggressive, really angry. Even me calling something out as racist [would equal] isolation,” she says. “I was 15, none of the teachers listened to me, the head of the year pulled me into a class and started calling me a bitch and all sorts of stuff. I told the head of school, but obviously nothing was done.”
Much like in the US, a lot of black British girls tend to do well at school. As far back as 2004, black African girls were overtaking white British boys in the classroom. But black African students also significantly outperform their Caribbean counterparts, and black Caribbean girls are twice as likely to be excluded from school than other female students. This reflects the statistics from the US, where researchers worry the perception of black girls lacking innocence is leading to their higher rates of exclusion and suspension.
As a mixed-race black child myself, growing up in a very white environment in Scotland, I didn’t ever come close to being excluded from school – but there were incidents that still rankle. As one of only two black girls in my year, I was picked on at various points by teachers; in my final year, a teacher told me just because I was black, that didn’t mean I could get away with giving him dirty looks.
My black peers in their early 20s have dozens of horror stories to tell: “I used to get detentions for the way I’d walked into lessons ... Teachers used to tell other pupils confidential private stuff I’d told them; put me on report card and threatened to take away my scholarship when they found out I was self-harming.”
Some say they felt sexualised by adults from an early age. One friend recalls that “adults used to comment on my body bare when I was in primary school, and note how it was developing, in a way that they would never do to white girls”.
‘Watch what you wear’
So is the situation any different for young girls now? Ella Benson Roberts is a biracial white and black Caribbean student at Acland Burghley school in north-west London. We meet at Caravan in Kings Cross for a hot chocolate and fries with her mum.
“I really enjoy sociology and drama; I feel sociology looks into different people’s lives and how things affect them differently,” the 14-year-old tells me. “And you’re a bit of a feminist, aren’t you?” chimes in her mum. “Yeah,” Ella says, “an intersectional feminist. Or a womanist.”
Thanks to the internet, black girls these days have the language to explain their struggle. Recent research from the media agency UM London suggests that 69% of teenage girls in the UK now identify as feminists: a higher proportion than any other age group. When Ella tells me about some of her feminist idols, Amandla Stenberg and Yara Shahidi, I feel gladdened these black women I’ve often written about are impacting their peers in a positive way. There was no real equivalent when I was in my teens.
Ella’s complaints are less about how she’s treated by adults, and more how her friends often run their hands through her afro. “I don’t think I’ve been treated that differently,” she says, “But there are certain things that adults do which are annoying – like comment on my hair.” It makes her feel as though she stands out.
The Georgetown study didn’t make allowance for light- and dark-skinned African American children, but my guess is that lighter-skinned and mixed-race children – like myself and Ella – are probably perceived as being slightly more innocent than darker-skinned children, thanks to colourism.
Fifteen-year-old Jade Olaide is of Nigerian heritage, and has had a slightly different experience of growing up black. “I’ve been told I act older than most of my year group; that I come across as more mature than other people my age,” she says. “That happens to a lot of my [black] friends too – being [seen as] more mature than their white counterparts.”
But Jade also says she has been treated as “older” by her family since she was very young. “I’ve been given responsibility at a young age. It wasn’t just in school – I think it’s a cultural thing: I was expected to do more than my white friends. I don’t think it’s a bad thing.”
It may also be the case, of course, that black girls are treated as older by relatives who want to prepare them for the struggles of being a minority in a white world. Jade, a born-and-bred Mancunian, describes a recent incident that made a big impression on her:
“We were kicked out of McDonald’s,” she says of her black friendship group. “It wasn’t actually us that caused the trouble, but the police were called to McDonald’s and every single one of my friends got kicked out. That day really upset and angered me … Something went on with a white group of people, and the police showed up and straight away went to our table without asking any questions.”
Jade has a lot of black friends from similar Nigerian backgrounds, which means she’s always had someone to talk to about her identity issues. She says she is looking forward to visiting Nigeria for the first time in the next year, and sometimes talks as though everyday racism is something that happened to my generation, but not her own.
“My brothers went through racism as well, and because there’s an age gap they grew up quite a long time before me,” Jade says. “Racism was actually quite bad when they were growing up … They repeat to me a lot of the time: ‘You’re a black girl growing up in a white man’s world. You need to keep your head down, and don’t ever let it get to you.’”
Olukoga, who is one of three girl triplets, remembers her older brother often having “the talk” about racism with her father. “It’s something that’s been discussed in my house, but always directed towards my brother – he’s a black guy, he has to be aware,” she says. “With me and my sisters, it was never really explicit. It was more like ‘watch your tone of voice’, that kind of thing. And watch what you wear, because you’re over-sexualised [by adults].”
According to Olukoga, who lives in Islington, north London, “A lot of my friends have quite curvaceous bodies and the cat-calling, the screaming, is very uncomfortable to watch. It’s definitely a problem – we’re only 16 or 17. Our body types shouldn’t give you a passport to advance on us.”
After studying the Civil Rights movement in the US, Olukoga did her own research on the black power movement and her black identity on social media. “You can often get stuck in your own bubble and think there’s not a lot of black women out there doing their thing,” she says. “Up until two years ago I didn’t really think there was anyone out there doing it [being a politician]. The only person I could think of was Diane Abbott. But then I got on Twitter and saw a bunch of amazing black women and it pushes you a lot.”
In the future, Olukoga is considering building a foundation to support black boys. “I see a lot of stuff – how they’re demonised in the media as ‘aggressive’. I want to do something to get away from the stigma of black boys and find a balance.”
But concerns about how young black men are treated by adult authority figures can sometimes leave black women battling their oppressions alone, as Kimberlé Crenshaw, creator of the #SayHerName campaign in the US, identified – pointing out that police violence occurs disproportionately to black women too.
“One of the things that is unique about gender racism in American society,” Crenshaw told Revolution Newspaper, “is that black women are subject to many of the racial stereotypes that people think apply primarily to men. In fact, they apply to women as well.”

R. Kelly, the multiplatinum R&B artist whose musical legacy became intertwined with dozens of accusations of sexual abuse, was found guilty on Monday of serving as the ringleader of a decades-long scheme to recruit women and underage girls for sex.
The jury in New York deliberated for about nine hours before convicting the singer of all nine counts against him, including racketeering and eight violations of an anti-sex trafficking law known as the Mann Act.
The decision represents the first criminal punishment against Mr. Kelly despite a trail of allegations of misconduct that extends for more than a quarter-century. His six-week trial exposed a harrowing system of trauma and abuse, commanded by the singer and enabled by his associates.
Mr. Kelly, 54, once one of the biggest names in popular music, now faces the possibility of life in prison, capping a remarkable reversal of fortune. As the verdict was read, he sat motionless in the courtroom, wearing a navy blue suit and glasses, with his facial expression hidden behind a mask.
To many observers, Mr. Kelly’s case represented a critical test of the inclusivity of the Me Too movement, which seeks to hold influential and powerful men accountable for sexual misbehavior. Never before in a high-profile Me Too-era trial had the large majority of the accusers been Black women.
Jacquelyn M. Kasulis, the acting U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, told reporters that the verdict sent a powerful message to men like Mr. Kelly.
She thanked the 11 men and women who accused him of misconduct at the trial.
“No one deserves what they experienced at his hands or the threats and harassment they faced in telling the truth about what happened to them. We hope that today’s verdict brings some measure of comfort and closure,” Ms. Kasulis said.
As he left the courtroom on Monday, one of Mr. Kelly’s lawyers said his defense team would consider an appeal.
“Of course we are disappointed in the verdict,” the lawyer, Deveraux L. Cannick, said as he walked through the courthouse. “I am even more disappointed in the prosecution for bringing this case,” he said, adding that it was “replete with inconsistencies.”
Mr. Kelly once stood atop the realm of R&B music, catapulting himself into an international sensation in the 1990s and 2000s on the success of hits like “I Believe I Can Fly.”
But as the Me Too movement continued to gain steam, cracks in his armor began to show, as new women and their families came forward, a protest campaign was waged to boycott his music and a jarring documentary delved into the accusations around him. The image he once crafted as an alluring sex symbol and genre-redefining lyricist collapsed in the public eye.
The trial marked a significant milestone, as women and men took the stand against the singer to accuse Mr. Kelly of sexual abuse for the first time, including several who had never shared their accounts publicly.
On Monday, several women who said Mr. Kelly had abused them praised his conviction as a decades-in-the-making rebuke of the singer and a meaningful validation of the stories of his victims.
“Today, my voice was heard,” Jerhonda Pace wrote on Instagram. Ms. Pace became the first accuser to ever testify against Mr. Kelly at a criminal trial when she took the stand last month.
Oronike Odeleye, the co-founder of the #MuteRKelly campaign, said the conviction was the result of accusations that took years to be heard.
“This is the culmination of the movement of so many women who have been trying so long to have their voices heard,” Ms. Odeleye said. “We have never had full ownership of our bodies. And we’re at a moment where Black women are no longer accepting that as the price of being Black and female in America.”
The verdict came after the government constructed a sweeping case against Mr. Kelly, with evidence that extended from recent years back to the early 1990s.
Federal prosecutors chronicled a dark journey in the career of the singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly. He was embraced as a hometown success story in Chicago as he overcame a low-income upbringing filled with struggles.
But his eminence assured him he was untouchable, prosecutors said, and as he gained immense access to young fans, Mr. Kelly became a criminal mastermind who used a universe of enablers and sycophants in his orbit to ensnare women, girls and boys.
The prosecution called 45 witnesses during the trial, but the criminal charges against the singer hinged on accusations related to six women, five of whom testified (the sixth, the singer Aaliyah, died in a plane crash in 2001).
Four additional women and two men also took the stand as accusers. And though none of their claims were included in the indictment, they helped bolster the government’s arguments, often telling jurors that their encounters with the singer were marred by sexual, physical or emotional abuse from him.
Throughout the proceedings, the result of Mr. Kelly’s only other criminal trial, in 2008, stood in mind for many observers. Prosecutors in Chicago had argued that a videotape showed him having sex with and urinating on an underage girl. But he was acquitted of all 14 counts against him after the girl at the center of the case declined to testify.
The singer’s career flourished afterward with successful record sales and a consistent flow of collaborations with superstars. But in recent years, his musical repertoire was largely expunged from the radio and public spaces, a fate that would likely persist with his conviction.
The government was barred from detailing his previous case. But witnesses depicted an offender who was emboldened by his initial absolution — and whose behavior grew increasingly more brazen and disturbing in the years that followed.
Cheerful fans saluted Mr. Kelly when he was cleared of wrongdoing in his Chicago trial. But only a small band of supporters was gathered outside the Brooklyn courthouse on Monday, where they streamed his music after the verdict was announced.
Mr. Kelly also faces a federal trial in Chicago on child pornography and obstruction charges, and additional state sex crime charges in Illinois and Minneapolis.
Kim Foxx, the top prosecutor in Chicago who announced state sex crime charges against Mr. Kelly in 2019, said the conviction was “monumental” for the Me Too movement and sent a significant message about whose stories mattered.
“It is my hope that through this trial and the toll that it has taken to get to this point, that we recognize that the movement is not at its fullest strength if everyone doesn’t have equal access to justice,” she said.
In New York, the racketeering charge was viewed by some as an unusual and potentially precarious approach. But the statute, which has commonly been used to take down mob organizations, was recently employed successfully against the Nxivm sex cult.
Mr. Kelly’s defense team said that the racketeering charge itself was flawed and unfounded, arguing that he had run nothing more than a successful music business. But the government’s case was expansive.
The charge was built around 14 underlying crimes that he was accused of committing as part of his criminal enterprise; only two of them needed to be proven to convict.
Mr. Kelly declined to testify in his own defense. But his lawyers aimed to cast his accusers as opportunists, liars and obsessive fans, arguing their sex with the singer had been consensual, and their accounts of abuse and misconduct fabricated. They evoked images of him as an altruistic romantic partner who regarded the women around him as family, treated them “like gold” and was blindsided by their allegations.
And they warned that the accounts of his accusers had been too inconsistent over time to believe.
“Getting a conviction of R. Kelly is a big deal,” Mr. Cannick said in his summation, invoking Martin Luther King Jr. in an attempt to argue that if the jurors acquitted Mr. Kelly, they would be demonstrating the sort of courage that defined the civil rights movement. “What’s a bigger deal is a system we can trust.”
But federal prosectors argued that a conviction would demonstrate that even the biggest stars were not untouchable by the law.
“The defendant’s victims aren’t groupies or gold diggers. They’re human beings,” Nadia Shihata, an assistant U.S. attorney, said at the end of the trial. “Daughters, sisters, some are now mothers. And their lives matter.”
The seven men and five women of the jury, whose ages and races were unclear throughout the trial, ultimately sided with their position. The group remained anonymous to the public and to lawyers at both tables in the courtroom.
It featured an enormous pile of evidence, including text messages that showed the real-time worries that some of Mr. Kelly’s employees shared about his treatment of women and several video and audio recordings, some of which appeared to depict the singer violently assaulting a woman and threatening her life.
Still, the focal point of the case was its slate of witnesses, who told jurors the singer’s public persona served to disguise his true intentions.
Among them were friends and family members of the singer’s accusers; eight of his former employees; the minister who presided over his union to Aaliyah; a doctor who treated him for herpes over more than a decade; and a host of investigators involved in his initial arrest in Chicago.
The trial itself represented a peculiar spectacle of the current moment.
It was first scheduled for May 2020. But the pandemic delayed the start date for 15 months. And members of the public and the media were not granted access to the primary courtroom out of safety concerns; they were required to watch the proceedings through closed-circuit video in overflow rooms.
Decades before the trial began, Mr. Kelly’s marriage to Aaliyah in 1994, when she was 15 and he was 27, was among the first revelations to bring substantial public scrutiny to his encounters with underage girls. The racketeering case allowed prosecutors the flexibility to introduce decades-old evidence, including details related to Aaliyah, an R&B prodigy whose full name was Aaliyah Dana Haughton.
One of Mr. Kelly’s former tour managers confirmed a long-rumored tale that he bribed a government employee to get a fake identification for Aaliyah so the wedding could go forward, because Mr. Kelly feared that she was pregnant and that he could be prosecuted for statutory rape.
Another woman, Stephanie, told jurors that the singer began sexually abusing her when she was 17, after he told her that he liked “young girls” and that he did not understand why society viewed that as a problem.
And a cascade of witnesses described a repressive system of restrictions that the women and girls around Mr. Kelly were forced to abide by — from a directive to address him as “Daddy” to requirements to obtain his permission to eat or use the bathroom.
They said that when the rules were broken, the singer doled out harsh and startling punishments, from skin-tearing spankings to forcing one woman to smear feces on her face and eat it.
Mr. Cannick, the lawyer for Mr. Kelly, argued that the accounts were works of fiction and argued to jurors that the verdict carried deep implications for broader ideals of justice and fairness.
But Elizabeth Geddes, an assistant U.S. attorney, told the panel that their decision would serve to hold the fallen superstar accountable for the decades of pain and torment he inflicted.
“For many years, what happened in the defendant’s world stayed in the defendant’s world,” Ms. Geddes said in her closing argument. “But no longer.”
