Ocala Electric Utility Warns Customers About Bill Payment Scam
OCALA, Florida, Feb. 11 -- The city of Ocala issued the following news:
Ocala Electric Utility (OEU) is warning its customers about a bill payment scam. Individuals and businesses have reported receiving telephone calls that claim their electric service will be turned off within 30 minutes unless immediate payment is made over the phone. OEU will never call its customers demanding payment by prepaid card, credit card or debit card. If customers believe there is a problem with their account, they are encouraged to call
OEU is taking steps to notify customers. Automated calls were sent to non-residential customers on Monday, Feb. 8. Automated calls to residential customers began Tuesday, Feb. 9 and will continue for several days.
It is important to increase awareness about payment scams in general. Customers should always be on the lookout for red flags and know what to do:
* Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason.
* Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who calls or emails you.
* Never wire money or provide debit or credit card numbers to someone you do not know.
First Billing Services (FBS) hosts our online customer portal.
You can sign up for an eBill, recurring payments (auto-pay), or text & pay. The system allows you to choose your payment method & how you want to receive alerts. To this site, FBS charges a convenience fee, which covers costs for providing this service & processing fees.

Payments can also be made using our Automated Phone System by dialing
Payments made via the Invoice Cloud Portal or via the Automated Phone System credit to your OEU account the same day. Scheduled payments made via Invoice Cloud do not add a payment extension to your OEU account.

Our online payment extension offers qualifying customers the chance to extend the due date of their bills. The customer MUST request a payment extension prior to the disconnection date. Since adoption of new ordinance, customers will be allowed two payment extensions per calendar year. If you are unable to keep your extension as agreed you will be ineligible for an extension for a period of one year.

The Medical Seal Program does not prevent service interruptions; therefore, we recommend that you maintain a battery back-up in case of a power outage.
Ocala Utility Services (OEU) will install a light fixture to brighten your little piece of the world. After the initial installation, we will handle maintenance and power all for one low monthly fee and our selection of our outdoor lights should fit just about any need.
