1. Warlock class overview

Warlocks are strong, self reliant, tier 1 levelers with nearly every leveling amenity imaginable. High sustain, high survivability, high damage, gear independence, multi target proficiency, world pvp strength, group utility through multiple crowd control options, summons, soulstones, healthstones, and not to mention a free mount at 40 allowing them to invest gold earlier without penalty

The only significant drawback from a leveling perspective is their low mobility possessing neither movement boosting abilities or talents. However, this lack of speed is made up for by Warlocks’ unparalleled ability to sustain combat against multiple enemies at once with virtually 0 downtime.

This is achieved in part through their tanky voidwalker and imp drain soul, by mainly because warlocks are the only class in the game that are able to utilize health and mana as interchangeable resources through life tap and drain life.

Their ability to turn a couple global cooldowns into hyper efficient damage over time spells that will have impact for 20+ seconds allows them to utilize natural mana regeneration per the 5 second rule earlier than almost every other class.

My favorite aspect of Warlock leveling, and this is a sentiment echoed by every Warlock I spoke with is that class is highly flexible and lends itself to your playstyle. There is no cookie cutter build you have to follow and there are many viable ways to level a Warlock efficiently.

With that said, take everything in this guide with a grain of salt and let’s begin!

3. General Tips for leveling as a warlock

Here are some tips to progress quickly during your leveling as a warlock in classic wow.

  • Ideally you should only be fighting mobs that are of equal level, or 1 - 2 levels below your level.
  • Don’t overkill mobs with your abilities. Make sure you spend mana efficiently and pool it whenever possible.
  • Keep your Food + First Aid up to date!
  • If you see a mage, ask for stacks of food + int and tip him! (your weapon skill will likely not be maxed).
  • If you PvP and don't plan to do any raiding, take Engineering. If you PvE, take Tailoring. Those are the only rules. Your 2nd profession is really up to you.

Here are some tips to help you leveling faster:

Purchase only the following skills during your leveling :

Additionally, only purchase the Voidwalker books. You can buy the upgrades to the other demons later when you turn level 60. It's also cheaper to do it this way too, as buying a level 6 skill book will automatically learn levels 1-5.

7. DPS Cycle for leveling as a warlock

Leveling 1-10

  • If you are ever at 100% HP you are likely misplaying - push the limits of your combat efficiency.
  • Train First Aid ASAP
  • Save every single copper - you will need money for gear upgrades.

Once you get your Imp, start Triangle Trapping your mobs:

  • Send your Imp to engage a target.
  • Strafe left or right forming a Triangle Formation between the target, your Imp, and yourself.
  • Let the imp build threat with firebolts then rip threat away from your imp with shadowbolt. The travel time between your imp and you should be more than enough to kill the mob without taking any damage.

Here is the cycle of dps to respect for these levels.

warlock wow classic

Dots are situationally useful in this bracket but I don’t usually bother applying them as Shadowbolt is more efficient at dealing on damage and threat.

Leveling 10-20

Get your Voidwalker ASAP so you can start Fear Juggling. If you have instant cast Corruption engage mobs with the following rotation if you are doing multi target sustained grinding:

Send Voidwalker in  while casting Immolate -> CoA -> Corruption -> Wand -> Drain Soul (Rank 1) right before death

With NO instant corruption:  Send Voidwalker while casting Corruption -> CoA -> Wand -> Drain Soul right before death

Send Voidwalker at Target 1 and dot it, Fear Target 2 then apply dots, send your voidwalker at Target 3 and dot it. Rinse and repeat, there should be no downtime if you manage resources well. Life tap if you have excess health, Drain Soul when a mob is about to die.

Here is the cycle of dps to respect for these levels.

warlock wow classic

Leveling 20-30

warlock wow classic

Leveling 30-40

  • Starting at level 37 start attempting to have a Shadoweave Set crafted for you (Gloves, Mask, Pants, Robe, Shoulders). This is an amazing foundation for gear going into raids.
  • Get Free level 40 mount!
  • Starting at 31 when you get Siphon Life you can start using it to get more damage on juggled fear mobs. But warning it is not very mana efficient and causes healing aggro!
  • On secondary / tertiary feared mobs siphon is higher priority than immolate since it has no cast time.

Here is the cycle of dps to respect for these levels.

warlock wow classic

Leveling 40+

  • Skip Training Curse of Shadow, Soul Fire
  • Use Howl of Terror (AOE fear) to your advantage to push your combat efficiency further.
  • Use Death Coi on CD on juggled mobs. Once you get it at 42 Improved Lifetap has 0 downside. The HP you gain from DC is more than the cost of tap.
  • Mobs start to become tankier and more resilient to your dots. Consider using Siphon more if it will be more efficient.
  • Do the level 50 Class Quest “An Imp’s Request” for an amazing trinket.

8. Best gear for leveling as a warlock

For leveling, do not focus on gear with + spell power, it’s not efficient.

You need a LOT of SpellPower stat to actually make a difference., I'm talking about having a full set of SP gear.

To get this gear you'll need to waste both time and money by leveling up Tailoring, buying the recipes (one of them is in a house in the middle of nowhere in the Wetlands) and farm the resources to craft this gear.

The rest comes from blue BoE World drops, which you'll either need luck to get or you're gonna end up wasting money by buying them from the AH (thus wasting your time as well as you'll have to travel to town, then back to your questing zone).

The other stats are just better to stack and much easier to get without having to go out of your way.

  • Intellect = Increases Mana Points by 15 per 1 point and chance to score a critical strike with spells. A must have!
  • Stamina = Increases HP by 10 per 1 point, very important for warlock because you can convert it into mana with the "Life Tap" skill.
  • Spirit = Increases out of combat HP and Mana regeneration
warlock gear vanilla

Priority: Intellect > Stamina > Spirit

Of course, if you get gear with spell damage, do not hesitate. But do not sacrifice [x] spirit or intellect only for that.

A quick glance at stats for PVE HL :

  • Spell power: must have for mage in PVE raids and dungeons, but not really useful during the leveling session.
  • Spell Hit : Very good stat in PVE as well for end game raiding
  • Spell Crit : Same as Spell Hit, very good stat as well

WoW Classic Warlock Guide

Warlock Spec Roles

You have 3 Strong DPS Specs to choose from, with Demonology being a strong choice for Solo Leveling up in Classic WoW. This class can be used as an Off Tank for certain Bosses with the help of your Pet and the Demonology Spec. This does not mean you can tank the entire dungeon as a warlock, in case that wasn’t clear.

Best Warlock Class Spec

The two Best Warlock Class Specs are between Destruction and Affliction, Demonology has its use and in rare cases can be used as an off-tank spec, however, we mostly recommend it for 1-60 levelling. Affliction use lots of DOT (Damage Over Time) Ability spells, spamming these in Raid, Dungeons and even Battlegrounds can easily get Warlock to the top of the DPS Charts. Destruction plays more similar the Fire mage, you can burst enemies for huge amounts of damage, this makes for a strong PVP Spec.

1.

Foreword

Warlocks are exceptionally quick solo levels that excel even more when placed in a group. They get early access to an Imp which gives them the best kill speed in the game from 1-10, before getting a Voidwalker at 10 that can tank enemies for you all the way to 60. With the combination of Life Tap IconLife Tap and Drain Life IconDrain Life Warlocks can trade health for Mana, letting them always make the most out of their resources. Warlocks are also one of the two classes that get a free mount at level 40, ensuring the earliest access to a vitally important tool while leveling. With their powerful DoTs, access to wands, and a pet to tank, Warlocks are top tier levelers that should have little trouble getting to 60.

2.

Spec Options

Warlock has many viable leveling specs and builds, but the most common is a combination of Affliction and Demonology, which revolves around using your DoTs and wand to kill enemies while your Voidwalker tanks enemies for you.

Affliction Warlock leveling guide

Demonology will offer a more defensive option while leveling, where you will utilize your demon for more damage while taking advantage of great defensive talents such as Soul Link IconSoul Link.

Demonology Warlock leveling guide

We also have a Destruction build that is all about one thing: Dungeons. If you are planning to level using a spell cleave group that AoE's its way through dungeons, this is the build that you will want to run. It can also be used for solo leveling, but we do not recommend that.

Weapons and Quests for Leveling Warlocks in WoW Classic

4.

Leveling in a Group as a Warlock

Contrary to popular belief, leveling with a partner or as part of a group is not a terrible thing. In fact, for most classes, leveling with a partner is actually better than leveling solo. While Warlocks are strong solo levelers, they are possibly the strongest duo class in the game. A strong duo such as Warlock/Paladin, Warlock/Druid, or Warlock/Shaman can compete with Warlocks for leveling speed, and will be faster than either player leveling solo. Warlocks can really pair with anyone, but do their best when paired with a strong support ally that can provide healing and buffs to help limit their downtime. When supported, Warlocks can play much more aggressively, using DoTs on multiple allies and casting Life Tap IconLife Tap as needed to get Mana back instead of potentially stopping to recover. Warlocks also can be strong in dungeon groups as well due to their high sustained damage and ability to recover Mana without downtime.

5.

Warlock Abilities

Warlocks have lots of different abilities to learn, some more useful than others. Gold will be scarce early on, and while having some is important for water and repairs, Warlocks luckily do not need to worry about saving up for a mount at level 40. This gives you lots more leeway with what skills to pick up, but do not go too overboard since it is still worth having some gold at level 60 for professions, gear, and consumables.

5.1.

Recommended Skills to Upgrade as a Warlock

The list above represents the most important skills that you should train while leveling as a Warlock. Following this you will skip many spells, and can choose to take them if you wish, assuming you have the gold. This list includes your important DoTs, control spells like Fear IconFear, important utility spells, and important single rank spells like Unending Breath IconUnending Breath and Inferno IconInferno.

Immolate IconImmolate, Corruption IconCorruption, and Curse of Agony IconCurse of Agony will make up the majority of your damage while leveling with wand attacks supplementing your DoT damage. This is the best rotation as it maximizes your damage efficiency, allowing you to passively regenerate Mana while attacking enemies with your wand. You can always throw in a Life Tap IconLife Tap or Drain Life IconDrain Life for extra Mana or health regeneration if you need it.

Create Healthstone IconCreate Healthstone, Create Soulstone IconCreate Soulstone, and Ritual of Summoning IconRitual of Summoning are you most important utility abilities that are unique to Warlocks. You will want to be able to make Healthstone IconHealthstone and Soulstone IconSoulstone for yourself while leveling, but Ritual of Summoning is just useful to have in case you ever decide to group for anything and need to get someone there quickly. Meeting stones at dungeons cannot be used for summoning in WoW Classic, so Warlocks are the only way to summon people to you. This can be nice as well since sometimes groups will pay you gold to join their group and help them summon a group member if they do not have a Warlock.

Fear IconFear, Howl of Terror IconHowl of Terror, and Death Coil IconDeath Coil are you primary control spells. Fear is especially useful while leveling since it can be used to send enemies running while you DoT them up, letting you set up damage on second and even third targets while waiting for the first one to die. These are also especially useful if you engage in any PvP while leveling.

5.2.

Pet Abilities

Your pets have spells with ranks just like you, but they cannot be trained at the normal Warlock trainers. Next to every Warlock trainer is a Demon trainer that sells Grimoires. This is how you will train your pets since each Grimoire will teach your pet a rank of one of its spells. While leveling you should buy all available Grimoires for your Imp and Voidwalker when you can train them.

6.

Leveling Strategy as a Warlock

Leveling as a Warlock comes down to efficiency, both with your damage and with your resources. Warlocks have the unique advantage that their resources are essentially interchangeable through spells; you can use Drain Life IconDrain Life to convert Mana to health and Life Tap IconLife Tap to convert health to Mana. Your main goal as a Warlock should be to minimize downtime by letting your Voidwalker tank while you use your most efficient damage rotation, which is to put up Corruption IconCorruption, Curse of Agony IconCurse of Agony, Siphon Life IconSiphon Life, and Immolate IconImmolate if you have the Mana, followed by just wanding the target to death. Your wand will be a high DPS option that does not use Mana, meaning you can passively regenerate Mana while wanding after not casting for 5 seconds. This sets you up for the next kills be only spending Mana on DoTs and passively regenerating the mana back before your next target. This is an extremely safe play style that is also consistent, and is why Warlocks are considered top tier levelers.

6.1.

Advanced Tactic: Juggling

One of the largest issues that this setup faces is that your Voidwalker does not generate as much threat as you. You will rip off of it without the proper care to let it get aggro, which can get slow. This is mitigated by sending your pet to attack first, following up with DoTs which do not deal their full damage at once, then wanding to kill the enemy. One way you can solve this is by a practice known as juggling. There are two main types of juggling: fear juggling and Voidwalker juggling. Normally, enemies do not have any diminishing returns, so you can cast Fear IconFear as much as you want, and it will last the full duration each time. This is useful since you can DoT and enemy while it is feared, and then simply Fear it again once the fear breaks from the damage and it runs back. You can effectively "juggle" two enemies at once by alternating which one is feared and keeping DoTs on them both to kill them efficiently. You can improve this even further with Voidwalker juggling by letting your Voidwalker tank an enemy by himself while only putting DoTs up on it. With just your DoTs up your Voidwalker is more than fine to hold aggro, so you can let it slowly and efficiently kill one enemy while you deal with others yourself through fear juggling.

7.

Professions While Leveling

If your goal is to hit Level 60 as fast as possible, it is not recommended to pick up professions while leveling. However, some professions are very useful for either leveling or at Level 60, and can be worth the time investment while leveling. First Aid is a must have profession at max level due to Warlock's lack of self healing, and learning it early on can be useful while leveling. Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning all are great choices for making gold towards your first mount, and can also be useful for helping to level other important professions later on, such as taking Mining to help level Engineering.

If you want an easy early money making profession, you can pick up Skinning or Enchanting. Skinning is great since you can just skin enemies as you level with little loss in time, and you will reach 60 with tons of valuable leather that you will collect along the way. Enchanting is also great since you can disenchant early green items to level up and get the materials to make Lesser Magic Wand IconLesser Magic Wand and eventually Greater Magic Wand IconGreater Magic Wand. They both are highly sought after early on, and can make you some easy money in the first few days when people really want them and they are not yet commonly made.

WoW Classic Warlock Builds

Best Warlock Race

The Warlock Class has trouble with Rogues, because of this you will want some form of CC removal this is why we recommend you use the Undead or Gnome Race. In the case, you already rolled Human or Orc doesn’t despair, they are solid picks and some cases may be more useful. For instance, Humans can detect stealthed enemies, ie Rogues and even Feral druids if you see any.

Best Warlock Spec

When it comes to levelling from 1-60 the Affliction and Demonology are some of the easiest to do it with. They also provide a lot of damage though DOTs in both Dungeons and raids and even in PVP Battlegrounds. We recommend trying Destruction Spec if your focus is to PVP, but Affliction is just as if not even better in some cases.

Warlock Class Overview

Warlocks are true masters of the Shadow Magic and other Dark and Forbidden arts. They control Demons, employ Destructive Magic as a weapon and take pleasure from inflicting pain and suffering to their enemies. Warlocks are very strong and versatile Damage Dealers, especially when leveling, even though their Demon Minions are not as strong as Hunter's Beasts when it comes to Tanking. Their incredible utility, survivability, and DPS toolkits make them one of, if not the best Class for World PvP. Potent Crowd Control options in a form of Fear and Seduction abilities, combined with lethal Damage over Time and Burst Damage spells are their fearsome (no pun intended) trademarks. Their only true weakness comes in the form of low mobility, but let us face it; if Warlocks had access to speed-increasing Talent or a Spell they would be just unstoppable (to be honest, they are unstoppable even with their limited mobility in some cases).

When in a group, Warlocks provide great Utility in a form of Soulstones that allow an in-Combat resurrection of a pre-designated party member (usually a Healer in a 5-man group or, less often, a Tank), Healthstones that work like Health Potions, and the Ritual of Summoning that makes assembling a Group much, much easier. Contrary to what their lore background might suggest, Warlocks are best friends of any Player that likes to run through any kind of group content.

This guide will aid you and your Warlock on your journey to level 60; it will help you choose a Race, present you with an optimal leveling Talent build, point you towards Dungeons and Quests that award worthwhile Wands, provide some tips & tricks, and more.

Warlock's Strengths and Weaknesses

Statistics Priority

  1. Spell Damage - Increases Damage Done by your Spells (you will want Spell Damage or Shadow Damage as a Warlock). This statistic is quite hard to get early, but Shadow Damage items start to appear in the early to middle '20s and some can be crafted by Tailors. This statistic will improve your kill times by a lot and increase your Damage to Mana efficiency which will minimize downtimes and allow you to use Life Tap less often, which will preserve Health.
  1. Stamina - Improves survivability by increasing the character's total Health pool. This is a very important statistic for Warlock because it provides him with Health and Health can be exchanged for Mana via the Life Tap ability. In fact, Life Tap is so strong, that Stamina should be prioritized over Intellect.
  1. Spirit - Increases Mana and Health regeneration in and out of Combat. Stacking Spirit allows Warlock to benefit from the 5-second rule more and further reduces his downtimes.
  1. Intellect - Increases total mana pool and raises Spell Critical Hit chance. It also increases the rate at which a character learns Weapon Skills. Intellect loses some of its value for Warlocks because of how strong and efficient the Life Tap can be. It is still a good statistic, but it shouldn't be prioritized over Stamina.
  1. Agility -  Increases Armor, provides additional Dodge chance and a Weapon Critical Strike chance. Agility will improve your defenses by a little bit, which means that it is not as useless as Strength, but it should be avoided if possible, nevertheless.
  1. Strength - Increases Melee Attack Power and the amount of Damage that an Off-Hand Shield can block. Warlocks can't use Off-Hand Shields and they do not rely on bashing mob's heads with their Staves or slicing them with their Swords or Daggers (outside very early levels), so this statistic is literally useless to them.

Leveling stat priority:

Spell Damage ⇒ Stamina ⇒ Spirit ⇒/=  Intellect  ⇒ ⇒ Agility ⇒ ⇒ Strength

Note:  Items with "of Shadow Wrath" Suffix are ideal for Warlocks, as they provide Shadow Spell Damage. "Of the Eagle" (Stamina and Intellect) and "Of the Whale" (Stamina and Spirit) are strong second choices and you should Need on those, while in a group, as well. "Of the Owl" items are of a little less value for Warlocks, but they are still perfectly usable.

The Best Warlock Races for Both Factions

Each Race has unique traits and abilities, some of which greatly benefit a Warlock, other - not so much. More competitive Players might even want to choose their Faction based on Racial traits of one of its member Races. We will take a closer look at all Races that can choose the path of a Warlock and determine which are the best for PvP and PvE.

Note: Please remember that a good Player will make all races work well, and a bad player will not get any better thanks to a Race choice. In other words - pick your Race and your Faction as you please, because after all, Fun is the most important aspect of the Game.

Alliance Races
PvP

Gnome's Escape Artist Racial can be used after Fearing a target which almost ensures gaining a lot of distance on an enemy. This, combined with the Intellect bonus makes Gnome a better choice for PvP than Human. Moreover, Human's strongest PvP Racial - Perception has a lower value for Warlock, because of Felhound's Paranoia ability which already dramatically increases Stealth detection. Human's Spirit bonus is nice, but it's not better than Gnome's Intellect and its importance is reduced because of Life Tap.

Recommended choice: Gnome

Second choice: Human

PvE

Gnome comes out on top for PvE as well. His Intellect Racial is very strong as it provides additional Mana and Spell Critical Strike Chance. Escape Artist finds surprisingly many uses in PvE and can be a potential life-saver (just imagine being caught in a fire while slowed/rooted without this Talent...). Human's Racials do not boost Warlock's PvE capabilities at all. As mentioned before, Spirit Racial is made redundant by the Life Tap ability, Weapon Specializations are useless for Casters and Perception will not find any use in group content.

Recommended choice: Gnome

Second choice: Human

Horde Races
PvP

Unlike Alliance's, both Horde Races that can choose the path of a Warlock are pretty much equally strong and bring some strong race-specific tools to the table. Undead's Will of the Forsaken makes him ideal for dealing with Alliance Warlocks and Priests, but it has rather long 2-minute Cooldown. Cannibalize comes in handy in some situations, but it's not that strong. Orc's built-in 25% Stun Resistance can take enemies by surprise and is a real game changer that provides Orc Warlock with a constant PvP advantage against all Classes capable of Stuns, making him a bit better than his Undead counterpart overall. Horde Warlock Race choice is largely preference-based - if you want to have an advantage against other Warlocks and Priests - pick Undead, if you want to make melee Classes hate you - pick an Ork.

Recommended choice: Orc and Undead are almost equally strong

PvE

If you want to pursue DPS at all cost, Orc will be the best choice for you, thanks to his Pet Damage increasing Racial. If you want to have some more utility in a form of Cannibalize and Will of the Forsaken, go for Undead. All in all, both Races are pretty much equally good for PvE, just like they are in PvP, so the choice should depend on your preference.

Recommended choice: Orc and Undead are almost equally strong

Optimal Talent allocation is essential for smooth leveling. Here, we will describe the most optimal leveling spec and lead you through the Talent Trees level-by-level.

Talent allocation for a leveling Warlock (10-59)
Leveling Warlock Build

  1. Levels 10-14 ⇒ 5/5 Improved Corruption - With 5/5 points allocated to this Talent, your Corruption becomes an instant cast spell.
  2. Levels 15-16 ⇒ 2/2 Improved Drain Soul - This Talent provides you with your main Sustain tool. You should Drain Target's Soul while your DoTs kill it to get the benefit (this won't trigger if your Pet deals a killing blow - you might want to make a Cancel Pet Attack macro for this reason).
  3. Levels 17-19 ⇒ 3/5 Suppression - This provides you with a Spell Hit Cap for Affliction Spells against enemies 2 Levels higher than you.
  4. Levels 20-21 ⇒ 2/2 Improved Life Tap.
  5. Levels 22-24 ⇒ 3/3 Improved Curse of Agony.
  6. Levels 25-26 ⇒ 2/2 Nightfall.
  7. Levels 27-28 ⇒ 2/2 Grim Reach.
  8. Level 29 ⇒ 1/1 Amplify Curse.
  9. Level 30 ⇒ 1/1 Siphon Life.
  10. Level 31 ⇒ 1/1 Curse of Exhaustion - You can also take Curse of Exhaustion and Siphon Life Talents in the reversed order.
  11. Levels 32-34 ⇒ 3/4 Improved Curse of Exhaustion - This makes your Curse of Exhaustion much better in PvP and allows you to kite enemies more reliably. If you are playing on a PvE server, you might consider allocating this 3 Talent points into Improved Drain Life instead.
  12. Levels 35-39 ⇒ 5/5 Shadow Mastery.

At this point, you will want to switch to the Demonology Tree (Dark Pact is bad and not worth a Talent Point - you already have Life Tap that does almost the same thing):

  1. Levels 40-44 ⇒ 5/5 Demonic Embrace.
  2. Levels 45-47 ⇒ 3/3 Improved Voidwalker.
  3. Levels 48-49 ⇒ 2/5 Fel Intellect.
  4. Level 50 ⇒ 1/1 Fel Domination.
  5. Levels 51-53 ⇒ 5/5 Fel Intellect.
  6. Level 54 ⇒ 1/5 Fel Stamina.
  7. Levels 55-59 ⇒ 5/5 Unholy Power.
If you like your Voidwalker or feel that your playstyle would benefit from a stronger Demon Pet at your side, you should follow this alternative Talent allocation route instead

Alternative Talent allocation for early levels
Alternative Talent Allocation

With this route, you will start in the Affliction Tree, shift to the Demonology Tree to grab the Improved Voidwalker Talent (like shown on the screenshot):

  1. Levels 10-14 ⇒ 5/5 Improved Corruption.
  2. Levels 15-16 ⇒ 2/2 Improved Drain Soul.

Now, it is time to grab the Improved Voidwalker Talent from the Demonology Tree:

  1. Levels 17-21 ⇒ 5/5 Demonic Embrace.
  2. Levels 22-24 ⇒ 3/3 Improved Voidwalker - This Talent basically makes your Voidwalker 30% more effective at what he does.

Go back to the Affliction Tree:

  1. Levels 25-27 ⇒ 3/5 Suppression
  2. Levels 28-29 ⇒ 2/2 Improved Life Tap.
  3. Levels 30-32 ⇒ 3/3 Improved Curse of Agony.
  4. Levels 33-34 ⇒ 2/2 Nightfall.
  5. Levels 35-36 ⇒ 2/2 Grim Reach.
  6. Level 37 ⇒ 1/1 Amplify Curse.
  7. Level 38 ⇒ 1/1 Siphon Life.
  8. Level 39 ⇒ 1/1 Curse of Exhaustion - You can also take Curse of Exhaustion and Siphon Life Talents in the reversed order.
  9. Levels 40-42 ⇒ 3/4 Improved Curse of Exhaustion - This makes your Curse of Exhaustion much better in PvP and allows you to kite enemies more reliably. If you are playing on a PvE server, you might consider allocating this 3 Talent points into Improved Drain Life instead.
  10. Levels 43-47 ⇒ 5/5 Shadow Mastery.

At this point, you will want to switch to the Demonology Tree again (skip that Dark Pact):

  1. Levels 48-49 ⇒ 2/5 Fel Intellect.
  2. Level 50 ⇒ 1/1 Fel Domination.
  3. Levels 51-53 ⇒ 5/5 Fel Intellect.
  4. Level 54 ⇒ 1/5 Fel Stamina.
  5. Levels 55-59 ⇒ 5/5 Unholy Power.

Note: At this point, you pretty much are done leveling; you can allocate your last Talent Point into the Demonic Sacrifice Talent or just switch to the Raiding Spec immediately.

After reaching Level 60, you should visit a Class Trainer, reset your Talent Points and spec into an End-Game Build.

Wand Progression

Wands are just as important for a Warlock as they are important for every other Caster Class that can use them. They enable Warlock to deal consistent Damage, essentially for free, while his mana regenerates in Combat (the 5-second rule and its importance yet again; front-loading your curses, immolates and corruptions, and then finishing a mob with your Wand is a viable tactic at all level ranges and it allows you to maintain your mana at a healthy level).

It goes without saying that you should aim to upgrade your Wand as often as possible because it will speed up your leveling process and make experience grinds much more enjoyable (at least for the next few levels after getting an upgrade). Below, we present you a short list of Wands that you should try and get during your leveling journey.

Note1: Listed Wands are not organized in a strict order and you don't have to go for every single one of them. The list is meant to be a raw guideline for Warlock's Wand progression.

Note2: There are a lot more Wands than those described. We have mentioned just the easy-to-get and quite essential upgrades. BoE Wands were excluded from the list, as there is a lot of RNG involved in getting them.

Rotations

Your rotation will greatly depend on your level and will get gradually more complex as you progress through content and get access to more tools. Moreover, your Wand will be an inherent part of your rotation throughout the whole leveling journey.

Let us look at basic DPS rotations for different level ranges:

Very Early Levels

At the beginning of your journey, your rotation will change rapidly as you will gain access to new abilities very quickly. You should try to implement every new ability to your rotation:

  • At first, you will have Shadow Bolt, Immolate and the Demon Skin. You should maintain the Demon Skin buff, start combats with Immolate, and spam Shadow Bolts at enemies.
  • At level 2 you get your Imp Class Quest, do it immediately.
  • At level 4 you get Corruption. You should start all the fights with it (you can even skip Immolate for now, as it is cost ineffective)
  • At level 6 you get Life Tap. Use it always when your Health is in good condition and your Mana isn't, in order to optimize your resources and minimize downtime.
  • At level 8 you get Curse of Agony and Fear; use CoA to engage enemies and implement Fear when fighting against multiple Targets or one strong enemy.
Levels 10 - 30

At level 10, you gain access to Voidwalker Class Quest - do it immediately. With Voidwalker at your side, you can start to engage multiple Targets at once with great efficiency and you should take advantage of it.

Single Target Rotation:

Immolate + Pet Attack (Combine these two in a Macro) Curse of Agony ⇒ Corruption ⇒ Wand Attack Drain Soul when Target is about to die

Multi-Target Rotation:

Engage a Target with your Voidwalker Immolate + Corruption + Curse of Agony ⇒ Engage a Second Target with your Wand and Fear it Apply Immolate + Corruption + Curse of Agony to the Second Target ⇒ Engage next Target with your Void Walker (the first Target should be Dead by now) ⇒ Apply Immolate + Corruption + Curse of Agony on it ⇒ Repeat the whole cycle and use Drain Soul on heavily wounded Targets to benefit from the doubled Mana regen

Note: After getting 2/2 Nightfall from the Affliction Tree, you should apply your Corruption before Curse of Agony in order to get more chances of casting an instant Shadowbolt.

Levels 31 - 60

Your standard Rotation does not change much at higher levels, but you get access to some new, interesting tools:

  • Siphon Life - Implement this Spell to your DoTing cycle (apply it last, because applying Corruption and Curse of Agony is more important - Corruption benefits from Nightfall, and CoA's Damage is rear-loaded).
    • Note: You can skip Siphon Life and/or Immolate in your Rotation if you have Mana management problems as these spells are cost-ineffective to use.
  • Death Coil  - This should be used on Cooldown in a combination with your Life Tap (if you are on full Health, Tap first or you will lose Healing value of the Death Coil).
  • Howl of Terror - This will allow you to engage multiple Targets at once with even higher efficiency; use it, when fighting multiple enemies, instead of a Fear.

Professions

Enchanting + Tailoring
Enchanting + Tailoring

As previously mentioned, Wands are essential for smooth level grinding experience and getting your first Wand early will enable you to take your leveling speed to the next level. This is why we recommend the Profession combination that will allow you to get a Wand as early as possible.

Tailoring will enable you to get some Uncommon Items for Disenchanting, and Enchanting will provide you with your first Wand at level 10 Enchanting skill (Lesser Magic Wand). Save all dropped Linen Cloths and craft some Brown/White Linen Robes out of them and then Disenchant. There is a 20% chance for a Lesser Cosmic Essence, so ~5 robes should be enough to get you mats for your first Wand (Essence can also be bought from a Vendor, but it is in limited supply, so don't count on it). Craft it, use it, and try to level Enchanting up to 70 to get your Greater Magic Wand. After that point, feel free to respec into your desired professions or stick to this combination for some future Cloth Armor/Wand/Enchanting-related benefits.

First Aid
First Aid
Although First Aid competes for Cloths with our recommended Primary Professions, we still strongly advise you to get it, as it provides Warlock with a very efficient combat Heal. Fear + Bandage combo can easily save your life and will allow you to solo elite/higher level quest mobs more reliably. Restoring Health with a Bandage is also faster than Eating, so it will reduce your downtime. Moreover, Bandages can be used on your Demon Pets to top them up on Health and they are generally better than the Health Funnel ability for that purpose.

Tips and Tricks for Warlock leveling

  1. Optimize your Rotation. Immolate and Siphon Life spells cost a lot of mana for what they do and can be skipped to streamline your chain-pulling if you are experiencing Mana problems.
  1. Create Macros for your Pet's abilities and put them on Hotkeys. Doing this will allow you to control your Pet with increased precision.
    • Simple "/script CastPetAction(X)" should work; replace "X" with appropriate Pet Skill number - Pet Skills are numbered from left to right.
  1. Preserve your Gold. Ideally, you should be able to progress through levels without any Auction House purchases (if you spot a great Gear upgrade, do not hesitate if it is cheap, however). When it comes to Skills - you should learn just the essentials from Class Trainers. As a Warlock, you get a free mount at level 40, but on the contrary to a common belief, your level 60 Mount is almost as expensive as every other Class's, which means that you'll need a hefty amount of cash when you reach level 60, so spending too much money on leveling gear might not be the best idea.
  1. Imp can Tank for you at early Levels. Pull mobs with your Imp's Fireball and put some ground between him and yourself. After that, engage the mob that is currently busy fighting your Minion. The mob should drop Aggro of your Imp and start moving towards you - if you time everything right, it will be dead before it reaches you.
  1. Life Tap does not affect your natural Mana Regeneration. You can use it without the fear of triggering the 5-second rule.
  1. Keep your Wand up to Date. Try to follow the Wand Progression route and remember that a lot of your Damage comes directly from your Wand (better Wand = faster kill times = faster leveling).

The Classic Warlock Experience

1.

Introduction

Warlocks are the masters of demonic energy, able to summon demons and use dark magic on their foes. Whether it is placing curses on your enemies or shooting powerful bursts of shadow or fire magic, Warlocks are exceptionally strong damage dealers with a large toolkit. Warlocks have a wide variety of unique spells that give a strong sense of class identity while giving you strong utility options. Spells like Ritual of Summoning IconRitual of Summoning and Create Soulstone IconCreate Soulstone allow you to do things that no one else can do, making you vital to any group composition. You also have your demons, each with their own set of abilities, many of which are incredibly powerful in both PvE and PvP.

2.

Warlock Strengths

  • Strong levelers, both solo and in a group
  • Strong damage for both AoE and single target
  • Unique utility, especially with the ability to summon
  • Powerful debuffs that are required in raids
  • Extremely durable in PvP due to Sacrifice IconSacrifice

3.

Warlock Weaknesses

  • High competition for gear
  • Lots of "chores", specifically farming Soul Shard IconSoul Shard
  • Shadow Bolt IconShadow Bolt can be partially resisted
  • Generates tons of threat compared to other DPS

4.

Best Horde Races for Warlocks

Horde races are very even, and you are free to choose between both Orc and Undead based on whichever sounds more appealing. Neither offers any meaningful benefit in PvE, but both offer their own powerful PvP racial abilities.

4.1.

Overview of Horde Races for Warlocks

4.1.1.

Undead

While Undead do not offer a straight damage increase, they are a popular choice for Warlocks for good reason. Will of the Forsaken IconWill of the Forsaken is considered to be one of the strongest PvP racial abilities in the game, allowing you to effectively counter other Warlocks, Priests, or anyone who uses one of these effects as a control ability. Additionally, sometimes there are fear abilities from bosses (such as in Onyxia's Lair) that allow you to immune them, meaning you can avoid a mechanic and do extra damage instead.

4.1.2.

Orc

Orcs are about even with Undead for both PvP and PvE, meaning you can choose whichever one you like more. While Undead have Will of the Forsaken IconWill of the Forsaken, Orcs have Hardiness IconHardiness, which is also considered to be one of the most powerful PvP racial abilities in the game. The ability to sometimes immune stuns is amazing against anyone with a stun, specifically against Rogues. For PvP the choice of race comes down to what you would prefer to be better against, Fears or Stuns. In PvE Command IconCommand provides a small marginal benefit if you have a pet, but that will only be the case with the SM/Ruin build, which most Warlocks will not use.

5.

Best Alliance Races for Warlocks

The best Warlock Alliance race for both PvE and PvP is Gnome.

Gnomes offer Expansive Mind IconExpansive Mind for 5% more intellect, making Gnome the best race in the game for Warlocks in PvE. No other racial offers a meaningful damage increase making PvE an easy choice. For PvP, Gnomes also have Escape Artist IconEscape Artist, which allows you to get out of roots and snares. This is an incredibly useful ability for PvP against abilities like Entangling Roots IconEntangling Roots and Frost Nova IconFrost Nova, and is going to offer you a significant advantage compared to Human's Perception IconPerception. Additionally Gnome's Engineering Specialization IconEngineering Specialization lets you get a max rank of 315 in Engineering, making your Arcanite Dragonling IconArcanite Dragonling more powerful when used, which is a bonus in PvP.

5.1.

Overview of Alliance Races for Warlocks

5.1.1.

Gnome

Expansive Mind IconExpansive Mind is a strong passive for both PvE and PvP, increasing your Mana pool and spell crit chance through your Intellect. Engineering Specialization IconEngineering Specialization is also worth mentioning since Engineering is the most popular and most powerful profession in the game. Lastly Escape Artist IconEscape Artist is a powerful tool in PvP, which can save your life while being kited or trying to kite someone who is slowing or rooting you.

5.2.

Human

Humans do not offer any benefit for Warlocks in PvE, but do offer Perception IconPerception for PvP. However, Perception can be hard to use since you need to predict when a target is Stealthed nearby and is not up all of the time.

6.

Best Professions for Warlocks

The best profession to have as a Warlock is Engineering. It provides powerful items that you can use in both PvE and PvP content to either deal damage or help you get out of a tough spot. For more information on what Engineering can offer, you can check out our Engineering Guide.

Tailoring is another great choice for Warlocks. There are several great items that are crafted through Tailoring, making it a useful profession early on when you are trying to gear. You also will want Tailoring for later in Zul'Gurub when your can make the Bloodvine Vest IconBloodvine Vest set, which is an incredibly powerful caster set.

While Engineering and Tailoring are great professions, the likely more important thing to think about is how you plan to make gold. Gold is incredibly important in WoW Classic for a number of reasons and will be quite hard to come by, especially at the start. Check out the Warlock Goldmaking section for more information on other potential professions for making gold.
