Lexus GX CV Axles

If you can pull and replace fully assembled CV shafts, you have the skills to reboot them, its easy, just messy. Get OEM Toyota CV boot kits for an FJ Cruiser use a year of , exact same kits for the Lexus. Two boots, bands and 4 bands. The bands do use custom tools for them so see if a local auto parts house rents them. OR go to hose clamps those work too. The kit comes with two tubes of grease. ONE is moly (gray balck) one is lithium-based(dingey white yellow), the lighter colored one, dingey white yellow, is the INNER and the gray back is the Outter.

  1. Cut the OEM bands with a cut off disk. (try not to nick the CV'sand axle)
  2. Yank the inner boot to the center of the shaft and slide off the inner cv bell
  3. Remove the spring clip off the axle keeping the inner tri star in place.
  4. Slide the inner CV off the shaft (might need to tap it with rubber/plastic mallet)
  5. Slide both boots now off the shaft, toss
  6. Use lots of rags and wipe all the grease off both CVs
  7. Hold outer CV upright with the inner axle up. Fill CV with MOLY grease pack, roll inner axle around to distribute and add more grease
  8. Slide outer boot in place and clamp.
  9. Slide inner boot to the center of the axle
  10. Slide Tri-star back onto axle and replace the clip.
  11. Fill inner bell with lithium grease and put grease on tristar
  12. Slide on inner bell over tri-star
  13. Slide inner boot into place and clamp

    What are CV Axles and how do they work?

    All front wheel drive and all wheel drive cars use CV axles. “CV” is short for constant velocity. You have your engine and transmission in the car. Which are mounted to the body of the car and cannot move up and down with the suspension. [AB2] Then you have the suspension and wheels on the car, which can go up and down to absorb bumps and on the front of the car, steer. The CV axle is a shaft that has two constant velocity joints at either end of it. One end comes out of the transmission, the other end mounts in the wheel hub. The two joints let the axle continue to spin as the suspension travels up and down and you steer the car. An fwd car will have one for both the passenger side and driver’s side. An AWD car will have the same, but additionally two in the rear of the car. Each of the CV joints is covered by a rubber accordion looking boot that holds the grease in and keeps dirt and water out. Because of mileage, environment, and just wear and tear these boots can rip. When they rip, grease escapes, dirt, and water get into the CV joint and can make it wear out. This will often cause a clicking noise from the front of the car while turning.

    When to replace your CV axles.

    There is no set interval for changing CV axles. They simply wear out over time and unless you have your car regularly inspected by a mechanic you may not know that they have torn boots.

    • You hear a clicking sound when turning while driving from the front of the vehicle
    • You notice lots of heavy black axle grease inside of your wheel or on the ground around your car.
    • Vibration at highway speeds.

    How mechanics replace CV axles.

    The mechanic will:

    • Verify the axle shaft needs to be replaced.
    • Remove wheel and replace the faulty axle.
    • Torque all fasteners and wheels to factory specifications.
    • Top off any lost transmission fluid
    • Check tire pressure.
    • Perform a road test.

    Is it safe to drive with a worn out CV axle?

    For a very short period, yes you can. However, over time, you run the risk of having the CV break and leaving you stranded. The CV axle is the only thing that transmits power from your engine and transmission to the wheels. It’s vital to keep you on the road.

    When replacing cv axles keep in mind:

    • Your car has multiple axle shafts, but in most cases, only one will need to be replaced.
    • Even if the CV joints or boots are the only parts of the axle to fail, it is often recommended to replace the entire axle.
    • CV axles in climates that have snow and use road salt can seize to the vehicle’s wheel bearing hub. It may require extra parts or labor to replace the CV axle.

    There are several options for CV axles (front):

    • OEM Toyota/Lexus - higher price point, reliable, stock boots which tend to tear quickly on the inner joint
    • Aftermarket CVJ axles - moderate price point, OEM parts, has a boot upgrade which prevents tearing (email or call CVJ for ordering http://www.cvjreman.com/)
    • Aftermarket “cheap” axles with warranty from chain parts stores such as Advanced Auto, AutoZone, Oreillys, etc. Tend to fail, but can get free warranty replacement. Not highly recommended

    CVJ sells inner high angle boots to replace all the inner boot issues with a longer, silicone boot. Highly recommended.

    There are several options for rear axle upgrades:

    Toyota/Lexus:

    • Stock 8“ rear with improved ring and pinion.
    • Stock 8” rear with improved ring and pinion and axles.
    • 2010 or later FJ 8.2“ rear axle replacement (whole housing and diff) - Bolt on without KDSS
    • 2010 or later 4Runner 8.2” rear axle replacement (whole housing and diff) - Bolt on with or without KDSS, depending on 4Runner trim (Trail Premium w/KDSS will bolt on to a GX470 w/KDSS)
    • 2010 or later GX460 8.2“ rear axle replacement (whole housing and diff), will only fit KDSS GX470's or will require rear sway bar removal or bracket fabrication. Swapping to a GX460 rear axle will also require re-gearing to match factory 3.73, or regearing the front to match 3.91 (doable by replacing the front diff with a ~$100 junkyard GX460 unit)
    • Aftermarket 8.2” rear axle replacement (whole housing and diff) - Bolt on
    • Aftermarket 9.5“ rear axle replacement (whole housing and diff) - Bolt on

    Non-Toyota/Lexus

    • Aftermarket Currie axle replacement (whole housing and diff) - Modifications needed to driveshaft.
