GM recalls 380,000 SUVs to fix suspension issue
Detroit — General Motors is recalling more than 380,000 older SUVs in the U.S., many for a second time, to fix a suspension problem that can cause them to sway at highway speeds.
GM decided on the recall after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation last year. The recall covers 2010 through 2016 Cadillac SRX and 2011 and 2012 Saab 9-4X SUVs. GM once owned Saab and manufactured its vehicles.
GM says in government documents that the rear suspension toe link adjuster may not have been tightened properly, which could result in a loose toe link. The toe link keeps the rear suspension stable and keeps the tires on the ground.
Owners are being told not to drive their vehicle if they see certain dashboard warning lights or experience unusual steering behavior. Dealers will replace the adjustable toe link with a non-adjustable one at no cost to owners, who will be notified by letter starting Aug. 9.
Most of the vehicles were first recalled in September 2014. NHTSA opened an investigation of the problem in November of 2020 after getting nine complaints from owners, including two involving crashes. The agency said three people were hurt.
GM says that in rare cases, dealers or independent repair shops may not have followed procedures for tightening a toe link nut. A loose toe link can make a vehicle wander on the highway or allow water into the threads on the adjuster, the company says.

Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors, has issued a recall for the Cadillac SRX to address a possible issue with the rear suspension toe links.
The problem: affected units of the Cadillac SRX were equipped with an adjustable rear toe link that may not have been tightened properly at the factory. The condition could cause the toe link to become loose.
The hazards: if the toe links become loose, the issue could illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) on the gauge cluster. Drivers may notice abnormal handling and steering behavior while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of involvement in a crash.
The fix: a dealership technician will replace the adjustable toe links with a non-adjustable version. This will prevent any future possibility of the toe links coming loose. Repairs will be performed at no cost to Cadillac SRX owners.

Number of affected vehicles: Cadillac has indicated that a total of 380,498 vehicles may be at risk for loose toe links.

A loose toe link can separate and cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the adjustable toe link with a non-adjustable one, free of charge. Owners are advised to not drive their vehicle if they experience certain Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) warnings or other issues, such as unusual steering behavior, while driving. Cadillac SRX and Saab 9-4X recalled for suspension defect
General Motors has recalled 380,498 vehicles due to rear suspension toe link adjusters that may not have been tightened properly, which could result in a loose toe link. The vehicles affected by the recall are Cadillac SRX crossovers built between 2010 and 2016, and Saab 9-4X crossovers built in 2011 and 2012. A loose toe link could cause instability while driving, especially at highway speeds.
This recall follows up an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after it received complaints from SRX drivers of uncontrolled swaying while driving. According to the agency, two incidents led to a crash. It's possible that improper procedures for tightening a toe link nut during four-wheel alignments may have resulted in corrosion and thread wear on the adjustable portion of the link.
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to park their crossovers if they experience certain Malfunction Indicator Lamp warnings on the dashboard or if they feel unusual steering behavior while driving. According to the official NHTSA recall notice, dealers will replace the adjustable toe link with a non-adjustable one at no charge. Letters are expected to be mailed to owners of affected vehicles on August 9, 2021. Alternatively, owners can call Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or Saab customer service at 1-800-955-9007 and reference recall number N212340980.
This is the second time many of these vehicles have been recalled for problems with the rear toe links. Back in September of 2014, GM announced that it would recall 290,241 vehicles that included SRX and 9-4X models because a "nut in the rear suspension toe adjuster link may not be torqued to the proper specification."

General Motors Recalls Two SUVs for Rear Suspension Problem
General Motors is recalling 380,498 Cadillac SRX and Saab 9-4X SUVs from the 2010-2016 model years to address a problem with the rear suspension. This is the second recall for these vehicles to repair or replace improperly torqued parts. GM says that owners of affected models who have experienced unusual steering or malfunctioning indicator lights shouldn’t drive their vehicles until their car is serviced.
According to GM, certain SRX and 9-4X SUVs were recalled in 2014 (NHTSA No. 14V571) because part of the rear suspension called a toe link hadn’t been properly tightened during the assembly process. After that initial recall, the company received further reports that some toe links were still loose, and it revised the procedures outlined in the initial recall. In 2020 GM continued to receive field reports about suspension-related issues. These included traction control, electronic stability control (called Stabilitrak by GM), or "service rear axle" warnings, malfunctioning taillights, swaying or wandering at highway speeds, uneven rear tire wear, or loud clunking noises over bumps.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notified GM about its own field reports of these problems in early June 2021 and expressed its view on problems associated with the initial recall. All vehicles in the first recall are included in this new one, along with additional model years.
An improperly tightened toe link can lead to corrosion which, combined with the vehicle’s movement, can cause the threads inside to loosen and potentially separate. This could lead to a crash.
General Motors will notify owners when they can schedule an appointment to have their vehicles serviced.
