Calls rise in Italy to ban pro-fascism groups after rampage

ROME — (AP) — Left-leaning Italian lawmakers and politicians on Sunday called for measures to outlaw pro-fascism groups a day after anti-vaccine protesters, incited by extreme-right leaders, stormed a union office in Rome.

Twelve protesters were either detained or arrested, authorities said Sunday, including Giuliano Castellino, leader of the extreme-right Forza Nuova party. Some 10,000 demonstrators turned out Saturday to express their outrage at a government-imposed requirement that employees have a “Green Pass” to enter their workplaces starting next Friday.

The passes certify that a person has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, recently recovered from the virus or tested negative within two days.

Cries of “Giuliano! Giuliano!” rose from the crowd Saturday. Castellino, who due to past violence has been banned from demonstrations in Rome, was allegedly one of the Forza Nuova members who exhorted supporters to storm the national headquarters of the CGIL labor confederation. Labor unions in Italy have supported the Green Passes to make workplaces safer for employees.

Scores of demonstrators used sticks, metal bars and rolled-up Italian flags to batter the door and then smashed through a window to enter. Inside, computers and phones were knocked to the ground and furniture was overturned.

Later, hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police as they tried to reach the square outside Chigi Palace, home to the premier's office and near the Italian parliament.

After the storming of the union headquarters, demonstrators had then headed down Rome's Via Veneto, a boulevard that winds past the U.S. Embassy. As a precaution, Italian security officials decided to usher Nancy Pelosi, the U.S. Speaker of the House, out of a nearby church where she had been attending Mass, her office said Sunday.

Earlier Saturday, Pelosi had a private audience at the Vatican with Pope Francis.

Dozens of protesters on Saturday night also stormed the emergency room at the Umberto I Polyclinic, where a demonstrator had been taken after feeling ill, and it took hours to remove them, hospital officials said. Gov. Nicola Zingaretti of Lazio, the region including Rome, said the culprits appeared to have participated in the anti-vaccine protests.

In the melee at the clinic, a nurse was struck in the head by a bottle and two police officers suffered bruises, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported.

Among those calling for the outlawing of pro-fascism groups was Giuseppe Conte, Italy's former premier and the new leader of the populist 5-Star Movement.

“We cannot accept these manifestations of thuggery,” Conte said.

The Italian Constitution bans any recreation of fascist parties, following the demise of Benito Mussolini's fascist dictatorship before and during World War II.

Conte spoke to reporters outside the GCIL headquarters, where hundreds of supporters demonstrated Sunday in solidarity. Similar demonstrations drew supporters in Florence, Bologna and Milan.

A Democratic Party lawmaker, Emanuele Fiano, said he'll present a motion in Parliament on Monday pressing Premier Mario Draghi's government to outlaw by decree Forza Nuova and similar movements.

like why did they have to include a worthless amiibo? It doesn't do anything unique yet its existence is a scalper magnet so a cereal brand can't be just a cereal brand. I wanted it to add some of my love for the Mario series into breakfast, not to go on a desperate chase for a super rare Premium Edition amiibo that does nothing unique and isn't even a figure.

I went over to Walmart after its release date and those guys knew literally nothing about it. Then I searched online and found no locations within 75 miles that have it. Good grief. Whoever's selling these boxes of cereal online for double digit bucks, you're a scumbag.

Not Nintendo's fault. Kellogs is hijacking all the cereal factories.

Not to mention there's a cardboard box shortage.

Really my local Walmart had plenty of it on the shelf.

Meh who cares? It´s just a f***ing cereal box...

I've never seen the box in person, just like the NES Classic Edition.

Actually hell no, I'm complaining that that seems to be what it takes go buy it, not that I'm willing to go to those lengths. It shouldn't be that hard to get goddamn cereal.

Side note I actually did find a whole stock of SNES Classics in Best Buy but wasn't carrying enough cash to buy one. Lady also confirmed that the amount they had at that moment was surprising and will probably be gone soon.

Unfortunately there is a well documented chip shortage. Apple is taking all the chips and wouldn't let Nintendo increase shipments for the Christmas shopping season. Please understand.

the end of one nightmare, prelude to the another...

One of my local Walmarts says it has one left but it's only available for pickup. It's the one out of the two closest ones that I don't really like, so I especially don't feel like driving over there just for a box of cereal.

There are tons of boxes on Ebay and Amazon, but they are way overpriced since the cereal is normally only about $3. I mean some of these people literally have pictures of stacks of this cereal, how ridiculous can you get lol.

There's a guy on Ebay who will ship it double boxed to avoid damage for a total of about $12 Buy it Now that also has a good rating. He has 27 left and has sold 295 boxes so far. It's 4x the price but still not that much money, debating about buying a box or two off of him.

Arthur Avenue businesses in the Bronx thrilled to celebrate Columbus Day after pandemic pause

BELMONT, the Bronx — This Columbus Day, one Italian-American community hit hard during the pandemic was back in full force celebrating its roots.

Restaurant owners and customers on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx honored their Italian heritage on Monday with a day of food, entertainment and the company of friends and family after a rough year and a half navigating through COVID-19.

Regina Migliucci-Delfino is a proud Italian-American who owns the restaurant Mario’s.

“It’s been a rollercoaster,” Migliucci-Delfino said. “Last year, Columbus Day, we were not open because we only had outdoor dining and it was just so difficult. This year was like, ‘No guys, we’re going to do it. We’re going to open,’ and it’s been a wonderful day here.”

Mario’s has been open since 1919 and it’s been a family business for five generations.

The food is so good that a visit on this holiday has become tradition for husband and wife Vito and Paula Fernicola.

“Every year on Columbus Day we’re like, ‘Let’s go see the kids and stop and have a braciole,’” Fernicola said. “What’s better than that?”

Frank Franz of the Belmont Business Improvement District says walking down the street on this day feels like a neighborhood reunion.

“People get together in the restaurants, in the cafés, people haven’t seen each other in the longest time,” Franz said. “Just today I saw several stores of people walking into a restaurant. From across the restaurant somebody yells, ‘Hey Phil!’ ‘HeyTony!’ Somebody they haven’t seen in years. It’s a special thing.”

The Belmont BID says the restaurants have been able to withstand this period of time because they’ve been around for generations and aren’t going anywhere.

“We are here to stay and we have survived this traumatic pandemic that we’ve been through and we are all happy just to be still here and surviving with each other in our Italian-American community,” Migliucci said.
