Elder Scrolls Online: 10 Best Necromancer Builds, Ranked (For 2021)

By Rhenn TaguiamUpdated

Necromancers in The Elder Scrolls Online can summon and empower the dead to do their bidding. This is how to build the best one!

Necromancers in The Elder Scrolls Onlineuse the power that divides life and death to summon and empower the dead to do their bidding. This class suits the darker aspects of The Elder Scrolls franchise, which dabbles into the unknown and the terrifying. For players interested in summoning minions and empowering them for encounters, this class is a must-try.

Moreover, Necromancy builds help make them quite versatile. Grave Lord relies on their summoning skills, while Bone Tyrant uses flesh and bones. Meanwhile, their Living Death makes use of their necrotic powers for healing. Interestingly, players have to be mindful when building a Necromancer as summoning in towns is a criminal offense!

Updated June 23, 2021 by Erik Petrovich: The Elder Scrolls Online: Blackwood has finally released. This expansion takes players back to an Oblivion-related storyline, revolving around areas in Cyrodiil that were previously unavailable for exploration. While the expansion brought a lot of new content to the game, it didn't change much about class-related skills and playstyles. While some roles are more suited to Necromancers than others, it's one of the most versatile classes in the game. Players can effectively tank, deal damage, or act as a support.

10 Blight Necromancer

  • Resource Focus: Mix of Magicka and Stamina
  • Strengths: Damage, Life Steal, Minions
  • Weaknesses: Sustained single-target damage, Support

The Blight Necromancer build from Alcast HQ enables players to cause significant damage across single and AOE targets with its Bow setups. This build makes use of summons, which activates the Undead Confederate passive for increased stamina and Magicka recovery. Both skillsets use Detonating Siphon for life steal. Additionally, it also uses the ultimate Pestilent Colossus for devastating damage.

The Bow main bar skillset summons Skeletal Archer and Blighted Blastbones. These provide damage mitigation, while players attack with Lethal Arrow and Acid Spray. Meanwhile, the Bow secondary skillset deals additional AOE with Endless Hail, single-target burst with Poison Injection, and buffs with Necrotic Potency and Resolving Vigor.

9 Bloodrush Necromancer

  • Resource Focus: Magicka
  • Strengths: Solo play, single-target damage, Healing/Support
  • Weaknesses: Temporal Guard requires good timing

The Bloodrush Necromancer build excels in fighting single targets. The Spirit Guardian constantly provides heals, while Revitalize and Undead Confederate let the Necromancer enjoy increased regeneration. Blighted Blastbones also offers assistance. Its 2H main bar relies on Camouflaged Hunter to reveal hidden enemies, with Forward Momentum removing any immobilizing debuffs.

These skills work well with Dizzying Swing, Executioner, and the ultimate Dawnbreaker of Smiting. The dual-wield secondary bar provides buffs with Spirit Guardian, Resolving Vigor, Summoner's Vigor, and Expunge and Modify. The ultimate Temporal Guard works as a handy reset, as it restores health, Magicka, and stamina to their values four seconds ago.

8 Cleave Necromancer

  • Resource Focus: Mix of Magicka and Stamina
  • Strengths: AoE Damage, Self-Buffs
  • Weaknesses: Single-Target damage, close combat oriented

The Cleave Necromancer relies heavily on its 2H setup for both single targets and AOE. Thanks to the Skeletal Archer, the Undead Confederate passive provides increased stamina and Magicka recovery. Both of the build's skillsets utilize Detonating Siphon and the ultimate Pestilent Colossus for devastating AOE.

This build from AlcastHQ has a 2H main bar that immobilizes enemies with Barbed Trap, and uses Blighted Blastbones to summon an additional ally. The Necromancer uses Wrecking Blow and Reverse Slice for damage. Meanwhile, its secondary bar fits well with a bow or a dual-wield setup. Endless Hail dishes out quick AOE against enemies, while the Necromancer enjoys buffs from Necrotic Potency and Resolving Vigor.

7 Werewolf Necromancer

  • Resource Focus: Stamina
  • Strengths: Works at any range, high physical damage
  • Weaknesses: Doesn't benefit from necromancer-based passives

The Werewolf Necromancer gives players a much-needed physical boost. However, a Necromancer's damage-based passives won't work in Werewolf form, as they need Necromancer abilities. Either way, the Werewolf form can be a great melee backup. In this Werewolf Necromancer build, the main toolbar takes full advantage of a Necromancer's long-range capabilities.

Blighted Blastbones lets Necromancers rely on a skeleton to fight for them, with Barbed Trap and Rapid Strikes attacking from a distance, and Detonating Siphon exploding corpses nearby. Their secondary toolbar has a familiar rotation, this time with Skeletal Archer and Pestilent Colossus dealing damage.

6 Colossus Necromancer Tank

  • Resource Focus: Magicka
  • Strengths: Tanking, self-Healing, multi-target damage
  • Weaknesses: Relies on Agony Totem and Spirit Ward, relatively complex

Necromancers make powerful tanks thanks to their Bone Tyrant specialization, which the Colossus Necromancer build from Alcast HQ takes full advantage of. This build enables Colossus Necromancers to pull ranged opponents and wreck havoc. These Necromancers make use of Mortal Coil to grant heals from corpses, with Spirit Guardian providing additional defense.

Their S&B main bar relies on the Agony Totem to grant Minor Protection. Heroic Slash, Pierce Armor, and Spirit Ward boost attack and healing. Meanwhile, the off-bar Destruction Staff taps into Necrotic Potency to take advantage of dead mobs, and get defense and buffs from Elemental Blockade, Mortal Coil, and Inner Rage. Lastly, Pestilent Colossus gives maximum carnage.

5 Solo StamCro

  • Resource Focus: Stamina
  • Strengths: Amazing for solo play, self-sustaining, well-rounded in general
  • Weaknesses: Not optimized for party play, relies on minions

The Solo StamCro makes full use of the Necromancer's summoning potential to provide immense survivability. The StamCro build relies on Spirit Guardian and Skeletal Archer for minions, plus the Undead Confederate passive for healing and sustains. Detonating Siphon deals damage while draining corpses, with Death Knell providing crit.

The main 2H skillset gives the StamCro buffs with Brawler and Echoing Vigor, with Reverse Slice and Dizzying Swing dealing damage. Meanwhile, Blighted Blastbones and Pestilent Colossus provide additional support. The bow secondary set relies on Razor Caltrops and Endless Hail for additional AOE, with Spirit Guardian, Skeletal Archer, and Ravenous Goliath in charge of picking off mobs.

4 Solo MagCro

  • Resource Focus: Magicka
  • Strengths: Great for solo play, self-sustaining, damage mitigation
  • Weaknesses: Party play, relies on minions for survivability

Like the Solo StamCro, the MagCro in dungeons relies on minions and passives for survivability and damage. In this build from Alcast HQ, the Spirit Guardian and Undead Confederate provide damage soaking and healing, which the Hungry Scythe boosts with bonus damage. This build has a Destruction Staff main bar that buffs the MagCro with Harness Magicka. Meanwhile, the Ricochet Skull and Hungry Scythe serve as damage dealers.

RELATED: Skyrim: The Best Race Powers (& Ones That Are Terrible)

Minions from Stalking Blastbones, Spirit Guardian, and Glacial Colossus provide massive AOE support. The Destruction Staff secondary set relies on AOE with Unstable Wall of Elements, with Mystic Siphon, Elemental Drain, and Consuming Trap providing resource steals. Lastly, Skeletal Arcanist and ultimate Ravenous Goliath can provide much-needed support via minions.

3 Scourge Necromancer Healer

  • Resource Focus: Magicka
  • Strengths: Very powerful support spec, multi-faceted benefits
  • Weaknesses: Combat prayer spam healing

Scourge Necromancers with Spirit Guardians can benefit from recovery boosts thanks to their Confederate passive, which opens up opportunities for their healing abilities. The Scourge build relies on the Necromancer's Restoration Staff for healing. Combat Prayer serves as their main spam heal, with Illustrious Healing and Radiating Regeneration giving boosts.

Energy Orb replenishes resources, while Renewing Animation is the team resurrect spell. The Shock Staff secondary bar serves as their minor defensive skillset. Elemental Blockade and Elemental Drain protects allies and debuffs enemies. Finally, Spirit Guardian and Summoner's Armor grant additional defense.

2 Reaper Necromancer

  • Resource Focus: Stamina
  • Strengths: Dual-Wielding, single-target damage, crowd control
  • Weaknesses: Self-sustaining, AoE damage

The Reaper Necromancer maximizes their stamina for significant single-target and AOE damage. Summoning Skeletal Archers and Blighted Blastbones lets them enjoy the Confederate Passive for regeneration, with Last Gasp boosting health.

The Reaper build has two skillsets that make use of the ultimate Pestilent Colossus. The dual-wield skillset makes use of Deadly Cloak for protection, with Rapid Strikes and Whirling Blades serving as its single-target damage dealers. Detonating Siphon serving as a decent AOE. Meanwhile, the bow skillset immobilizes enemies with Barbed Trap, with Endless Hail providing AOE damage. Resolving Vigor and Necrotic Potency also provide helpful buffs.

1 Curse Necromancer

  • Resource Focus: Magicka
  • Strengths: Survivability, AoE damage, minor support skills
  • Weaknesses: Single-target damage, resource recovery

The Curse Necromancer boasts great survivability and decent single-target and AOE damage. This build from Alcast HQ uses Undead Confederate and Mystic Siphon for resource recovery. Its Fire Staff main bar summons allies in the form of Skeletal Arcanist and Stalking Blastbones. Blood for Blood deals AOE damage, while Mystic Orb deals AOE damage with useful healing.

Its ultimate ability Shooting Star deals powerful AOE. Meanwhile, its Fire Staff secondary bar makes use of Necrotic Potency and Harness Magicka for healing and shields. Unstable Wall of Elements and Unnerving Beyond deal great AOE damage. This bar uses Glacial Colossus as its ultimate.

Slimecraw: obtained in Wayrest Sewers 1, Veteran Dungeon

  • (1 item) Adds 771 Critical Chance

WHY? provides the most critical chance per piece and ideal when using a mythic instead of a monster helm.

Diamond’s Victory: obtained via crafting, five traits in Blackwood or can be purchased on traders.

  • (2 items) Adds 129 Weapon Damage and Spell Damage
  • (3 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
  • (4 items) Adds 129 Weapon Damage and Spell Damage
  • (5 items) While in combat, using an ability with a range of 7 meters or less grants you Range Supremacy for 5 seconds, adding 437 Weapon Damage and Spell Damage to your damage over time and ranged attacks. While in combat, using an ability with a range of over 7 meters grants you Melee Supremacy for 5 seconds, adding 437 Weapon Damage and Spell Damage to your melee attacks.

Perfected Bahsei’s Mania: obtained in Rockgrove trial Blackwood Chapter.

  • (2 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage
  • (3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.
  • (4 items) Adds 657 Spell Critical
  • (5 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage, Increases your damage done to non-player enemies by up to 15% based on your missing Magicka. Current value: 0%

WHY? running two medium with low sustain provides incredible amount of damage with the hybridization of stats.  Flex this out for  either Mother’s Sorrow, Burning Spell Weave, Scathing Mage if you do not have trials gear.

Mythic: Harpooner’s is situational, but you’ll want to collect and flex in for top end PvE DPS during certain fights.  However, Death Dealer’s is a set and forget mythic that I prefer.

Harpooner’s Wading Kilt: Mythic obtained by collecting five pieces:

  • Murkmire – Wolf-Tail Sash Lead – Murkmire Foul Fishing Spots
  • Blackwood – Kothringi-Cut Leather Lead – World Boss Death Wart, World Boss Sul-Xan Ritualists
  • Shadowfen – Bog-Blue Jasper Fetish Lead – Ruins of Mazzatun Dungeon last boss
  • Shadowfen – Tide-Glass Beads Lead – Waterplants (Nirnroot etc), Pure Water Nodes
  • Bal Foyen – Silverweave Cord Lead – Covenant Enemies, most likely all enemies

Set Bonus

  • (1 item) Dealing direct damage grants you a stack of Hunter’s Focus for 1 minute, up to 10 stacks max. You can only gain 1 stack of Hunter’s Focus per second. Each stack of Hunter’s Focus increases your Critical Chance by 125 and your Critical Damage by 1%. Taking direct damage removes 5 stacks of Hunter’s Focus, up to once per second. Removing Harpooner’s Wading Kilt removes all stacks of Hunter’s Focus.

WHY? incredible damage if playing in a coordinated group with little pressure on you especially at range.  Feel free to flex monster helm like Zaan’s, drop the one piece Slimecraw for a simpler setup.

[FLEX] (if not running mythic use Monster helm below)

  • Zaan’s: obtained in Veteran Scalecaller Peak – great of single target
    • (1 item) Adds 657 Spell Critical
    • (2 items) When you damage a nearby enemy with a Light or Heavy Attack, you have a 33% chance to create a beam of fire that will connect you to your enemy as long as you remain within 8 meters of them. The beam deals 305 Flame Damage every 1 second to your enemy for 6 seconds. Every second, this damage increases by 100%. This effect can occur every 18 seconds and scales off the higher of your Weapon or Spell Damage.

Mother’s Sorrow and Maelstrom same as the reasons as above.
