Like cotton candy at carnivals and fruit-flavoured sorbet, the OPI Retro Summer Collection officially launching on June 1st has a roundup of six shades that beckon back to those lazy, hazy days!
(To view the full colour story, check out the OPI Retro Summer Collection press release, which goes into the details and background information.)
All the colours in the OPI Retro Summer Collection glide onto the nails easily, but the formula is on the thin side, which is streaky on the initial coat. Since the consistency is watery, I suggest that you use thin coats for greater control and also wait a few minutes in between coats to reduce any dragging.
To achieve full coverage, I needed to use three coats for all the colours. Even though I prefer polishes that need just two coats, this extra coat wasnt a big deal, since the polishes went on easily.
The darker colours in the mix, SPF XXX and Flip Flops & Crop Tops were a smidgeon more pigmented than the rest, but they still required that third coat to completely cover the nail line.
My favourites in the collection are SPF XXX (orange), Towel Me About It (yellow), and Sailing & Nailing (blue).
See the rest of this post for swatches of all the colours, bottle shots, and photos of the collectible box I received.
Additionally, I show bottle comparisons of OPI Sailing & Nailing from this collection and OPI The Is Have Itfrom the OPI Alice Through the Looking Glass Collection, in case some of you were curious.

OPI: Retro Summer Collection Swatches Review
Posted on Jun 22,
Hello my darlings! Hope you are all doing well! Today, I have OPIs Retro Summer Collection to share. Let me just tell you how excited I was to get this collection. The colors are perfectly Summery and retro! Amazingness! Check em out!
Towel Me About It is a buttery yellow crelly. Its buttery in more ways than one, the color and the formula. 2 coats.
Im Getting A Tan-gerine is a lovely sherbet orange crelly. 2 coats.
Whats The Double Scoop? (how cute is that name???) is a pretty pale pink crelly. 2 coats.
Sailing & Nailing is a sweet and summery pale blue crelly. 2 coats.
Flip Flops & Crop Tops is a bright warm toned pink creme with coral undertones. 2 coats.
SPF XXX is a muted orange creme. 2 coats.
Surprise, surprise, Im in love with these. The collection is so cohesive and fits the theme perfectly. Not to mention, the names are stinkin adorable! On top of all that, they have superb formulas! Winners all the way around.

OPI Retro Summer Collection
Press Sample of OPI Retro
OPI recently released the Summer Brights collection, and shortly after I received the OPI Retro Summer collection to show you. They released them back to back it seems, but I’m not one to complain about polishes releasing at all. The more the merrier in my opinion.
So above are the 6 shades in the OPI Retro Summer Collection. At first glance, nothing that hasn’t been released before – so if you’ve been around collecting polishes for awhile, these probably don’t excite you much. If you are newer to the polish craze, then you will probably really love these colors.
Formula however I was disappointed with. They weren’t impossible, but I needed 3 coats for all 6 shades. Not because of chalkiness or typical pastel issues, but surprisingly enough the issue was they were thin and slightly watery. I don’t want to repeat this on all 6 photos, so I’m going to say it here at the top. In order to not flood your cuticles, make sure you don’t pick up too much polish. You need to let each coat dry fully, or you will pull up the previous coat and cause patches to appear and see down to your nail. They are a bit tricky this time around. Considering how common some of these shades are, that did surprise me a lot. Especially knowing they have older, similar shades with better formulas.
Ok with all of that said, let’s take a look at the OPI Retro Summer Collection!
OPI Retro Summer Collection Flip Flops & Crop Tops Swatch
OPI Flip Flops & Crop Tops is a bubblegum pink creme. This had the best formula of the 6, but I still needed 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
This shade is fairly close to Suzi Nails New Orleans from the OPI New Orleans collection that released for Spring Unfortunately though, that was a 3 coat shade as well.
OPI Retro Summer Collection What’s The Double Scoop? Swatch
OPI What’s The Double Scoop is a light pink creme. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
This shade is similar to OPI Small + Cute = ♥ from the Hello Kitty Collection released in January.
OPI Retro Summer Collection I’m Getting A Tan-gerine Swatch
OPI I’m Getting A Tan-gerine is a slightly dusty tangerine orange creme. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
OPI Retro Summer Collection SPF XXX Swatch
OPI SPF XXX is a red leaning orange creme that borders on being a neon. It isn’t neon, but it’s bright and has a slightly dusty appearance. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
OPI Retro Summer Collection Sailing & Nailing Swatch
OPI Sailing & Nailing is probably my favorite shade of blue. This is a light, but bright, blue creme. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
OPI Retro Summer Collection Towel Me About It Swatch
OPI Towel Me About It is a pale yellow creme. I used 3 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.
Yellows are difficult for me to wear, but this one is really wearable for my skin tone and doesn’t give me lobster hands.
And there you have it, the second of the Summer collections. As I said before, the colors themselves are nice and really good picks for Summer. As far as formula though, there are other similar shades out there that aren’t this finicky to apply. If you don’t mind 3 coats and waiting for each coat to pretty much fully dry in between, then have at them. I do wish there was a lime green or something in here though to break up the orange and pink thing going on. I feel like greens are lacking a lot this year, which is odd coming from me – I barely wear greens.
My top picks for this collection are Towel Me About It and Sailing & Nailing.
Price: $ Each
WHERE TO FIND THEM: ULTA, ULTA.com, and select professional salons

opi retro summer swatches & review
OPI Towel Me About It OPI Retro Summer (above) is a pretty creamy, dreamy pale yellow that I did in three coats. Your technique will more than likely need a tiny shift so you dont use any sort of brush pressure at all. Between coats, give it a good couple minutes to set so you dont pull up the coats underneath. Its finicky and if you cant figure out how to float your coats, its going to make you mad. Pretty though. And dupey but Ill show you that later. Down there. After the swatches.
OPI Im Getting a Tan-gerine OPI Retro Summer (above). Two floaty coats again, no brush pressure. My coverage here looks great, but to my eyeball-actual, its just adequate, a touch patchy. Dunno why OPI is making me have to do three coats when we all know they can make this shade a two-coater. Grrr. I dont like to work for perfect payoff. The more coats I have to do, the more irritated I become.
OPI SPF XXX OPI Retro Summer (above). OPI is calling this an orange-red thats so hot its off the charts. Im calling it a creamy dusty coral-leaning orange. Formula-wise, this one is excellent. Two coats with a couple minutes of dry time between and youll be good to go.
OPI Whats the Double Scoop? OPI Retro Summer (above). This shade of pink makes me happy. Its a wonderfully pigmented, super-saturated bright cotton-candy pink that goes on fairly easily if you can get your brush parallel to the nail and float. them. coats.
OPI Flip Flops & Crop Tops OPI Retro Summer (above). Bubblegum pink in two easy coats. The formula here is definitely better than some of the others and immediately after youre done your second coat (after a good couple minutes of dry time on the first), you might not be pleased. Just wait another minute and itll all level out. Youll see. Itll level and the shine that pops will make it all worthwhile.
OPI Sailing & Nailing OPI Retro Summer (above). Gah! This icy blue! She took me three coats to get to this level of greatness and shes still a touch patchy down the sidewalls. Is three coats worth it? If you want this kind of colour payoff it is.
Now we should see what Ive got lurking in The Archives that comes close, yes?
