How to Use a Samsung Monitor With a Mac

By Daniel Hatter

Multiple monitors can be used with a Mac computer.

If your Mac computer has an additional video-out connection, such as VGA, DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort, you have the ability to use a secondary monitor with it. Samsung monitors are compatible with any Mac with a matching video connection. To use your Samsung monitor with your Mac computer, the only ancillary device required is the appropriate video cable. Consult your Mac and Samsung documentation or look at their video connections to determine what type of video cable you need.

Turn off your Mac computer, and position it so that you have access to the video connection. Plug your Samsung monitor's power cord into an outlet and connect one end of the video cable to the video connection on the monitor. The connection will be located on the underside of the screen or on the back of the monitor.

Position your Samsung monitor, and connect the other end of the video cable to the video-out connection on your Mac computer. If it is a Mac desktop, the connection will be located on the back panel of the computer. If it is a MacBook, the connection will be located on either the left or right side panel.

Turn on your Mac computer and Samsung monitor and navigate to the "System Preferences" menu. Click "Display" and select the desired screen resolution. Open the "Arrangement" tab and drag the screens around the dialog box to set up your monitor positioning. If you want your Samsung monitor to show a duplicate image of your primary display, check the "Mirror Displays" check box.

Tips

  • Consult your Mac computer documentation if you have any trouble finding the video connection.

HDMI vs DisplayPort

Which is the best?

Supported Technologies

HDMI and DisplayPort were designed for different uses, so they support different technologies. Each has its own advantages depending on how you plan to use it.

Supported Resolutions

The maximum resolution and refresh rate available depends on the specific versions of DisplayPort and HDMI available to you. Most monitors on the market today support either DisplayPort or and/or HDMI or While the exact specifications vary depending on a few other factors, below is a list of the approximate maximum formats each connector can support.

HDMI HDMI HDMI DP DP DP DP

HDMI is technically superior thanks to the release of HDMI , which surpasses the capabilities of DisplayPort , but monitors that support it are scarce. Expect that to change soon, though, as a number of manufacturers announced HDMI monitors at CES Compared to standard HDMI , DisplayPort is superior. DisplayPort has also been announced, and it has an even higher maximum bandwidth than HDMI at nearly triple the bandwidth of DisplayPort This would theoretically make it possible to achieve resolutions of up to 16k with compression or lower resolutions with much higher refresh rates than is currently possible. As of writing, though, there's no hardware that supports DisplayPort , and due to global delays, we likely won't see any until late at least.

Winner: HDMI, for now

Multi-Stream Transport (MST)

First introduced with DisplayPort , Multi-Stream Transport, or MST, allows you to connect multiple displays to a single DisplayPort connection on your computer. Although the total bandwidth can't exceed the maximum bandwidth of the port you're using, in theory, this technology allows you to run up to 63 separate displays on a single port. This device chaining can be done either from one display to another, a technique known as 'daisy-chaining', or through an external hub.

HDMI doesn't natively support MST, but it's possible to achieve similar results using DisplayPort to HDMI hubs. This still requires a DisplayPort connection on the source device.

Winner: DisplayPort

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)

DisplayPort

  • Supports G-SYNC and FreeSync

With two different mainstream VRR technologies on the market, it's important that your choice of connector match your needs. If you're looking to connect a PC with an AMD graphics card, or an Xbox, you'll be looking for a display that supports FreeSync. FreeSync is supported on both HDMI and DisplayPort, so you don't really have to worry about it. G-SYNC, NVIDIA's VRR technology, is only supported over DisplayPort at the moment, so if you have an NVIDIA graphics card, a DisplayPort connection is best. For options, see our recommendations for the best FreeSync monitors and the best G-SYNC monitors.

Winner: DisplayPort

Learn more about the difference between FreeSync and G-SYNC.

USB-C Alt-Mode

Mainly supported on compact 2-in-1 PCs and some phones, USB-C Alt-Mode can send a video signal over a USB-C port. DisplayPort has supported this capability since and depending on the bandwidth required for the display, it also allows USB data to be sent over the same cable, so if your monitor has built-in USB ports, you can drive the display and the USB ports with a single cable. This also allows for USB Power Delivery mode, powering your computer with a single cable. HDMI also supports USB-C Alt-Mode, but requires a more complex cable, as the signal must be converted from DisplayPort to HDMI.

Winner: DisplayPort

Other Technologies

This is just a summary of the major technologies supported by both DisplayPort and HDMI. HDMI also supports other technologies, including ARC and eARC, and Ethernet-Over-HDMI. With very few exceptions, these technologies are mainly designed with TVs in mind, and they aren't supported on the vast majority of monitors, so they're beyond the scope of this article.

Physical Differences

HDMI CableHDMI Connector
DisplayPort CableDisplayPort Connector

HDMI

  • Pin Connector
  • Friction Latch

DisplayPort

  • Pin Connector
  • Mechanical Latch on most

HDMI and DisplayPort are physically very similar. HDMI uses a pin cable, while DisplayPort has 20 pins. Both connectors look alike, but most DisplayPort cables have a physical latch that prevents them from being disconnected accidentally. Although not officially part of the DisplayPort standard, the majority of DisplayPort cables have a latching mechanism. On the other hand, very few HDMI cables have latches.

Maximum Length

HDMI

  • ' for p signals
  • 30' for 4k signals
  • Active cables can be used for longer runs
  • Supports other cable types, including HDBaseT, for runs over '

DisplayPort

  • Officially: 10'
  • Longer cables exist, but maximum resolution may decrease
  • Expensive extenders required for longer runs

Standard HDMI cables are available in lengths exceeding ' for p signals, or 30' for 4k signals. Using active cables, or other transmission methods, like HDMI over HDBaseT, makes it possible to run HDMI cables for over '. DisplayPort, on the other hand, has a maximum length of about 10' according to the official standard. Longer cables exist, but the maximum resolution and refresh rate may decrease with longer cables.

Winner: HDMI

Compatibility

Originally designed for HD TVs, HDMI is now supported by almost any home audio/video device, including computers, home theater systems, game consoles, etc. HDMI is also supported by the vast majority of displays currently on the market, from small portable displays to the largest 8k TVs.

DisplayPort was designed for computer use as a replacement for DVI and VGA connectors. There are no consumer TVs that support DisplayPort at this time, and we don't know if there ever will be. None of the major game consoles support DisplayPort, nor do most cable/satellite boxes or streaming devices.

Conclusion

DisplayPort and HDMI cables deliver very similar performance, but they each have their advantages and disadvantages. HDMI is supported on more devices, but DisplayPort, which was designed for computers, has a few technical advantages. Overall, if you're looking to connect your computer to a new monitor, use DisplayPort if it's an option. If not, HDMI is an almost equally good choice. If your monitor has a limited number of inputs, using DisplayPort will also leave your HDMI ports free, which is great if you want to connect a game console or other device.

The best 4K monitors in top Dell, LG and Samsung monitors

If you're still using a Full HD or even older monitor, it's now time to upgrade to one of the best 4K monitors. And, naturally, we've got a list of the very best right here.

3, x 2, resolution 4K displays have never been more affordable while more PCs and Macs than ever support this display standard - though ensure you check what your system is capable of. Check out our guide to screen resolution if you’re coming at this fresh.

Whether you work in design, photo, video or whatever else, you’re likely going to be working with content displayed at resolutions of Ultra HD and higher, and that means 4K displays have gone from a luxury to an essential.

If you need even more space to view content, then we also have a guide to ultrawide monitors, which give you the space of dual screens without the clutter.

With a 4K display, you can watch high-resolution Ultra HD and 4K video at full quality, which is a must if you’re editing or creating it. Though if you’re working exclusively in the video, you might want to check out our guide to the best monitors for video editing.

We also have a guide dedicated to the best monitors for MacBook Pro, as well as a rundown of the best touchscreen monitors.

What to look for

While 4K monitors are more expensive than p ones, they have actually come down in price a lot in recent years, so you can now go 4K without spending a fortune. Of course, there are still some expensive 4K screens out there as well, which not only feature high resolutions but are also professionally calibrated for the best possible colour accuracy.

If you're going to be embarking on any kind of colour work with your new display then you'll be looking for precise colour accuracy. Most entry-level 4K monitors still do a fairly decent job, but designers will want to look for a monitor that offers full coverage of the AdobeRGB or DCI-P3 colour space (you'll want to invest in the best monitor calibrator as well, by the way).

Investing in a colour-accurate display – and it is an investment – will bag you an excellent screen for black levels and brightness that'll be brilliant whether you're working on images or video.

Size is obviously an issue. inches is now very common but the inch size is seen much more often now. If you're looking for a display specifically for image editing then check out our roundup of the best monitors for photo editing too.

Dell Ultrasharp UQ

Pro features for under a grand put this 4K monitor top of our list

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel tech: IPS

Inputs: 1x HDMI, 1x Displayport

USB: 4 x USB , 1x USB Type C

Reasons to buy

+Thin 6mm bezel+Great colour accuracy

Reasons to avoid

but not quite % AdobeRGB-Only two display inputs

The Dell UltraSharp UQ is the latest in Dell's long line of class-leading displays, and it continues the manufacturer's run of superb monitors. With full sRGB covering, 95% DCI-P3 and exceptional colour uniformity, it's ideal for all types of creative, including those working in photo and video.

It's also reasonably affordable for a screen of this size and quality, which is rather impressive, all things considered. It may lack some features like the colour calibrator of the Eizo ColorEdge CGX we've included below. But it's also about a quarter of the price, and with a build that's extremely high quality, that's very hard to argue with. A sleek design meets a matt IPS panel finish and 6mm thin bezels, all adding up to a superb monitor at an outstanding price. All things factored in, this is the best 4K monitor you can buy right now.

Samsung U28ED

The best budget 4K monitor

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel technology: LED

Inputs: 1 x DisplayPort, 2 x HDMI,

USB: None

Reasons to buy

+% sRGB support+Picture-by-picture functionality

Reasons to avoid

-Narrow viewing angle-Basic feature-set

There's so much to like about this entry-level but large Samsung 4K display. This incher lacks pro features that you get with the displays above and below, but there's still percent support for the sRGB colour space, high brightness level of cd/square metre and support for 60Hz 4K.

It's a decent-looking display that also boasts various connectivity options including dual HDMI and Display Port, too. You can even use picture-by-picture if you want to use two inputs alongside each other, such as a TV box or gaming console. The viewing angle is narrower than more expensive monitors, which is worth bearing in mind, but as a does-the-job monitor at a good price, the Samsung U28ED fully qualifies.

Eizo ColorEdge CGX

The best 4K monitor you can buy – with a pro price tag to match

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel technology: IPS

Inputs: 2 x DisplayPort, 2 x HDMI,

USB: 3 x USB

Reasons to buy

+Outstanding colour accuracy+Includes hardware calibration tool

Reasons to avoid

-Significantly pricier than competitors-Somewhat dull design

The Eizo ColourEdge CGX is undoubtedly the connoisseur’s choice in high-quality displays. Eizo displays are a very familiar sight in professional video and photography studios – and this inch 4K monitor, with a bit display and bit colour look-up table, represents a big upgrade over its predecessor. The CGX also boasts one feature that sets it apart from all competing high-end 4K screens.

Unlike other 4K monitors, the CGK has a x resolution. This reflects the different, slightly taller 4K standard used in digital video production, compared with the x resolution used in most computer displays. All of this monitor's features come together to produce a jaw-dropping image, making your creative work shine.

The design of the ColourEdge CGX is arguably a little dull and utilitarian, certainly less sleek than others on this list. This may bother you, and may not, but it's worth noting. There's a built-in calibration tool to constantly keep your colours as accurate as possible, which pops across the screen every time it's powered on, along with a bundled monitor hood. If money is no object, the Eizo ColorEdge CGX is the best 4K monitor you can buy right now.

Huawei MateView

A unique aspect ratio is handy for design and photo work

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel tech: IPS

Inputs: 1x HDMI, 1x Mini Displayport

USB: 2 x USB

Reasons to buy

+Superb brightness and colours+Excellent value for money

Reasons to avoid

-Brightness uniformity issues-Few display inputs

Most displays are or format, which makes the Huawei Mateview immediately attention-getting. This slightly squarer format is good for viewing certain types of content – viewing images and documents in portrait format is easier, and a picture taken on a standard camera can be displayed full bleed. Of course, the flip side is that widescreen video will have big black bars on the top and bottom – so it’s probably not the best choice for movie-watching

The MateView is pretty firmly pitched at working creatives. Its IPS panel is capable of displaying % of the sRGB colour gamut, and 98% of the DCI-P3 video colour space. It also has a maximum brightness level of nits, and a contrast ratio. The sleek, slim-bezel design is a nice addition too, and the touch-sensitive smart bar provides an ergonomic way to control the monitor. Available at a tempting price, this is a solid choice of monitor for creatives.

Reasons to avoid

- Poor speaker sound

Many 4K monitors can be expensive. However, this LG 27UL offers gorgeous 4K resolution,  excellent colour accuracy and VESA DisplayHDR support for a mid-range price. It also supports 99 per cent of the sRGB colour space alongside the HDR, making it a brilliant monitor for photographers and video editors.

There's USB-C support to boot, while if you're a gamer you won't be disappointed by the capabilities here, with dedicated modes for that.

There are, of course, cheaper inch monitors around and we've covered many on this page that are more expensive and intended for high-end professional users. But if your budget is more prosumer rather than professional video editor, you'll find this LG has a huge amount to offer.

Acer Predator X27

The best 4K monitor for HDR performance

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: Hz

Panel technology: IPS

Inputs: 2 x DisplayPort, 1x Mini-DP, 1 x HDMI, 1x VGA

HDR rating: HDR

Reasons to buy

+Excellent brightness and local dimming+High refresh rate

Reasons to avoid

-Costly for what you get-More than non-gamers need

This Acer Predator X27 inch display is great for those working in video, thanks to its HDR certification, which means that its peak brightness for HDR matches or exceeds most TVs that are sold, giving you a great display for creating or checking HDR content. It also has local dimming zones for better control of dark, which again rivals flagship TVs. Acer's built-in control software is also great for quickly customising and adjusting the modes, including colour and contrast specifics.

99 per cent Adobe RGB coverage and over per cent of sRGB make it great for broader creative uses as well, and a high HZ refresh rate is great for gaming, or anything else where you want to see smooth and instant response on-screen. Nvidia G-Sync is here as well for gaming – if you want a monitor for work and intense gaming then this is a great choice. If not, it might be more than you need.

Philips Brilliance P

This 4K monitor has great image quality at a very attractive price point

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: 3, x 2,

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel technology: IPS

Inputs: 2 x DisplayPort, 1x Mini-DP, 1 x HDMI, 1x VGA

USB: 3 x USB

Reasons to buy

+Superb value+Excellent image

Reasons to avoid

-Boring design-Fiddly OSD controls

Compared with some of the pricey high-end colour accurate screens, the Philips Brilliance P (catchy name, we know) is an excellent alternative, as it’s great value for money and can serve up an excellent image. It’s a inch IPS panel with measured 99 per cent sRGB and 73 per cent AdobeRGB coverage, a thin-bezel design and a few extras such as a pop-up webcam that works when the built-in USB hub is connected.

It’s not really aimed at graphic designers – the colour presets are given terms like 'office' and 'movie' rather than 'sRGB' and 'DCI-P3' and the fiddly underside buttons make it tricky to flick through on-screen menu options. And although the image quality isn’t as high-end as it gets, with a Delta-E under 2, rather than under 1, and a nit measured brightness, this screen still looks very impressive and won’t disappoint.

BenQ SW

A fantastic 4K monitor for all kinds of image editing

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel technology: IPS

Inputs: 2 x DisplayPort, 1 x HDMI,

USB: 2 x USB , 1x USB-C

Reasons to buy

+Fantastic image quality+Thin bezels

Reasons to avoid

-Possibly small for some-Lower contrast ratio

BenQ already has a strong portfolio of gaming and general-purpose 4K displays of different sizes, all featuring the company’s trademark 'puck' – a wired remote control that sits in the base and makes it much easier to flip through colour settings and presets, compared to constant fiddling with on-screen controls. The SW is a inch IPS 4K display with a bit HDR panel and a bit LUT, aimed squarely at photography and graphic design use.

The headline features for graphics work are 99 per cent AdobeRGB and per cent sRGB coverage and a whole range of colour settings to choose, including a gamma range from to , numerous calibration modes and excellent brightness. It really offers up a sumptuous picture, though the contrast ratio of is a little lower than other monitors.

Thin surrounding bezels, a flexible stand that tilts, rotates and swivels, and a reasonably generous set of display inputs with picture-in-picture modes rounds off this premium offering from BenQ.

Panel technology: IPS

Inputs: 2 x HDMI, 1 x DisplayPort, 1 x Thunderbolt 3

USB: 4 x USB , 1 x Thunderbolt 3

Reasons to buy

+Full AdobeRGB coverage+Thunderbolt 3

Reasons to avoid

-Competitors are cheaperHz refresh rate

Whenever Lenovo launches a Think-branded product, you can expect high quality, which is exactly what you get from its designer-focused ThinkVision display. An excellent design, plenty of ports and great picture quality make the premium Lenovo ThinkVision P32U worth its high asking price.

% AdobeRGB coverage is enough to compete with top-end screens, and it has Thunderbolt 3, which lets you connect and charge laptops from a single port. This professional-grade 4K monitor isn't cheap, but it certainly is impressive. Though the 60Hz refresh won't be enough for gaming, and anyone who has experienced a Hz will probably be reluctant to go back.

BenQ PDU

A brilliant 4K monitor for video editing and 3D work

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel technology: IPS

Inputs: 1 x DisplayPort, 1x Mini-DP, 1 x HDMI,

USB: 4 x USB

Reasons to buy

+4K resolution+Large screen

Reasons to avoid

-Design may seem dull to some-Some features a bit niche

The BenQ PDU's screen size and resolution make it a great choice for designers and creators. It isn't the cheapest model in our guide (for that, scroll down to the Iiyama at number 07) but it's a more affordable option for pro creatives than the other options so far.

So what's so good about it? Well, the screen is a hefty inches, which makes working with 4K images and videos much more comfortable. 3D designers will be grateful for the inclusion of a CAD/CAM mode, and everyone else will appreciate the factory-calibrated colour accuracy and Rec. adherence.

Philips Brilliance BDMUC

The best big 4K monitor right now

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel technology: VA

Inputs: 2 x HDMI, 1 x DisplayPort, 1 x Mini DisplayPort, 1 x VGA

USB: 4 x USB

Reasons to buy

+Just huge+Four-way PiP input

Reasons to avoid

-Maybe too big for comfortable use-High power consumption

The Philips Brilliance BDMUC is an incredible display – but do you really want a inch panel? Based on VA-IPS panel technology, it offers extremely good contrast, with cd/m2 brightness. Its menu is controlled with a small joystick at the back and it also offers a four-way picture-in-picture (PIP) mode, allowing you to allocate a quarter of the screen to each video input.

On such a large 4K screen, each connected device will have its own x screen area – perfect for seeing your designs in Illustrator CC or working on your 3D art on one machine while looking up reference images on another device on the same screen, for example.

Viewsonic VPK

This 4K monitor has a bright picture and great contrast

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel technology: IPS

Inputs: 1 x DisplayPort, 1x Mini-DP, 2 x HDMI

USB: 3 x USB , 1x USB-C

Reasons to buy

+Excellent picture quality+Lightweight build

Reasons to avoid

-Fiddly to put together-Bulky external power brick

Viewsonic has a few colour accurate displays on the market, and the VPK is the most high-end model in its catalogue, a inch 4K IPS screen, sporting per cent srGB and quoted 99 per cent AdobeRGB coverage. It’s a bit fiddly to put together, requiring a screwdriver to attach the panel to the stand, but the overall design is extremely svelte, with a thin and light build, near edge-to-edge screen, and only a small bezel at the bottom that accommodates touch-sensitive controls.

With a bit LUT, contrast ratio and nit brightness, the picture quality of the VPK won’t disappoint, although it doesn’t quite deliver the same eye-popping colours of the most high-end 4K displays money can buy.

Asus ProArt PA32UC-K

One of the best 4K screens on the market

Specifications

Screen size: inch

Resolution: x

Refresh rate: 60Hz

Panel technology: IPS

Inputs: 4 x HDMI, 1 x DisplayPort, 1 x Thunderbolt 3

USB: 2 x USB Type A, 1x USB Type C

Reasons to buy

+Full AdobeRGB coverage +Thunderbolt 3

Reasons to avoid

-Top of price range-Max 60Hz refresh

Asus has updated its flagship ProArt 4K display, the ProArt PA32UC-K, with a more premium appearance, bit colour, a whole new set of inputs (including Thunderbolt 3), much higher nit brightness and even better accuracy, now using a bit look-up table (LUT). Hardware support for colour calibrators is now included out of the box and accuracy can hit per cent sRGB, per cent Adobe RGB, 95 per cent DCI-P3 and 85 per cent Rec All very impressive, but it comes at a high price. Also, the 60Hz refresh rate means it's probably not one for intense gaming.

That said, with a feature list and image quality that now puts it up there with the most high-end screens, the PA32UC-4K is more competitively priced than first appears.
