We start this article by detailing the role of the starter motor on your Volkswagen Routan. The starter is an electric motor which is powered by your battery, its job will be to make your engine run at a high enough speed to start it (usually around / rpm). It is consisting of three most important parts:

  • The Solenoid: This component is an electrical relay that will action as a switch, it will be activated by the key of your Volkswagen Routan and let the current from your battery to the engine unit of your alternator.
  • The engine unit: Most important element of your alternator, it is the one that will drive the flywheel of your Volkswagen Routan and create enough speed for your engine unit to start.

  • The engagement pinion: This is the last part of your starter, it is the toothed wheel that will be in direct contact with the flywheel, it enables to transmit the force from the starter to the engine.

Location of the starter on classic Volkswagen Routan

First and most common circumstance, where to locate the starter of a Volkswagen Routan with a conventional motor (implied without start and stop). The starter has a particular objective, to start the engine unit of your car, for that, it must constantly be near the engine unit flywheel of this one because it is the part that it actuates when it is used. The flywheel is found at the junction between your gearbox and your engine unit.

Location of the starter to Volkswagen Routan with start and stop

And now second possible starter location of your Volkswagen Routan . This case is much less frequent. It only is about engines equipped with start and stop, and a good part of them will be equipped with a starter placed close to the flywheel. Nevertheless, on some particular series or engines, the starter of your Volkswagen Routan might be included in your alternator, it is then named a starter-alternator, to locate it nothing much easier, locate your accessory belt and you should find out the big starter block.

What is a Starter?

The starter helps the car start. It’s really that simple. It’s a small motor (and, as a result, it’s often called the starter motor), that is responsible for getting your car’s primary motor off and running. It’s actually a fairly simple device. While the starter is small, it’s quite powerful. It can turn the car’s motor over at a pretty slow speed (around revolutions per minute, whereas most cars idle just under 1,), but that’s all that is needed to get the motions in your car’s engine going, so that the car can turn on. It’s a pretty cool and somewhat complex operation that I’m guessing you don’t really care about, so here’s the basic version. When you turn key (or press the “ON” button) in your car, the starter motor is activated. It has a gear, called a pinion gear, which attaches to the engine’s flywheel. As the starter turns the engine follows suite, sucking in air and fuel, until it’s up and running at full speed. As for power, the starter gets its juice from the battery. Which is why your car won’t turn on if the battery dies, because the starter has no way of doing its business. It probably goes without saying that your starter gets a lot of use. Every time you use your car, the starter motor has to spring into action. And since it gets used so much, it can wear down rather easily, at which point it will need to be replaced.

Symptoms of a failing Starter

Your car won’t start or engine cranks slowly

Did you really need me to tell you this one? The name is right there, and I just explained it. The starter helps the car start. Without a starter, the car can’t start. Do the math. If the starter motor is fully dead, you won’t be able to start your car. End of story. But if the starter is just starting to die, and kind of hanging on to life, then you might experience intermittent starting. The car will sometimes turn on, and sometimes won’t. Not ideal, especially if you’re trying to get somewhere on time. It’s also worth noting that if you’re experiencing intermittent starting, it could be due to some faulty wiring in the electrical system, rather than the motor itself. Or, of course, it could be a battery issue.

Funny noises

This shouldn’t be news to you: your car shouldn’t be making weird noises. If it is, then you’ve likely got an issue on your hands. There are two noises associated with failing starters. If the car won’t turn on, it may be due to the starter motor, as mentioned above. If the car is whining when you try (but fail) to turn it on, then that’s a sure sign that the starter is busted. That noise is due to the starter motor spinning, without being attached to the flywheel. If the car isn’t making that noise, but still won’t turn on, then the issue is likely from something else. If your car is makes a grinding noise when it’s first started, then that also may be the starter. That’s the sound of the starter gear failing to disengage once its work has been done.

How urgent is a Starter replacement?

The urgency of a starter replacement is entirely dependent on how much you like driving your car. If you prefer to just sit and stare at your car, then it’s entirely up to you. If you’re like the rest of us and actually prefer to start your car and hit the road, then you’ll want to get your starter replaced asap.

There are a number of issues that can go wrong with starting system and make your Volkswagen Routan car won’t start or hard time to start &#; This article guides you through some of the facts behind the starting system, and the components that may be to blame, and tells you what action you can take to try to remedy each situation.

No lights on the Volkswagen Routan dashboard

If no lights coming on in the dashboard and no other electrical consumers work, the battery could be completely dead or there is no connection between the battery and the vehicle electrical system. Check if the battery terminals look tight. If the battery is completely dead, jump starting might help.

Volkswagen Routan the key won&#;t turn in the ignition

If the key won&#;t turn in the ignition, it could be for a couple of reasons: Often this happens when the steering is locked by the ignition lock with the front wheels turned aside or when one of the front wheels is pushed against something. In this case, try turning the steering wheel left and right while gently jiggling the ignition key &#; this might help to release the steering lock.

Volkswagen Routan No Start, No Sound, No Crank when you turn the key in the ignition:

If nothing happens when you turn the ignition key to the &#;Start&#; position, it means that the starter motor doesn&#;t turn over the engine. Most commonly this could be caused by a low/dead battery or there is no connection between the battery and starter.

Check the battery and the terminal cable connections. If they look really corroded, you need to clean the battery posts and cable connectors or replace the cables and try to start the engine. Also check the starter. The solenoid attached to the top of the starter can fail, as well as the components inside. Replace starter solenoid, starter contacts, starter assembly or repair starter circuit as required.

The Volkswagen Routan car makes a clicking noise but won’t start:

If you turn the key to the &#;Start&#; position, but the engine won&#;t crank; all you hear is a single click or repeated clicking coming from the engine compartment. Very often this could be caused by a low battery or poor connection between the battery and starter.

The Volkswagen Routan  engine cranks over but won’t start:

There are many possible causes, but we know it is neither a battery nor a starter problem. Just remember: a vehicle will always require air, fuel, and the ignition to operate.

Check the fuel. You may be out of fuel, or the fuel isn’t getting to your engine. If the wrong amount of fuel is being injected into the combustion chamber, or being injected at the wrong time, the engine will not start. Again, this will be a case where the engine cranks over, but will not actually run. This could be caused by a few different parts including the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injectors, and fuel lines. Some of those options are a stretch, but do have an effect on the system. Start with the fuel injectors, and make sure they are clean.

If it’s not a fuel problem, the electrical spark isn’t getting through to the spark plugs. Check the spark. Without spark to ignite the fuel mix in the combustion chamber, the engine will not start. It will turn over or “crank over” but will never actually run.  Spark issues are not limited to the plugs. Check the spark plug wires, the distributor or module, and plug gap. These all have a huge effect on the function of the ignition system.

Starter Problems of Volkswagen Routan

Never again.

2 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 02/09/

Every once in a while the car does not start, everything works including the windows, lights but engine does not start. I have had battery, alternator, and starter replaced, and it is still doing it. Hard for repair shop to diagnose because it doesn't do it when it's there. Most of the time it finally starts after about 8 to ten times of periodically turning the key. The vehicle is stationary when this happens.

3 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 10/12/

I just purchased the Volkswagen Routan. I have had it 3 weeks it randomly died when test driving the van and all the alarms and lights came on. We just thought I didn't have the fob in right. Then it started to randomly not start, even the remote start will not work. The lights, radio, alarm, windows and door locks work like they normally should. Usually if I wait like 20 minutes and keep trying the key (taking it out of the ignition and reinserting it) until it starts. The check engine light came on for 7 days. Thursday 10/10/ nothing worked let it sit overnight and still nothing tried to jump it and it finally started. Took to place I purchased jd byrider in janesville, WI and they believe it was the starter because it was not turning and it was replaced on 10/11/ Then 2 hours later the car again would not start again. The dealer came to rescue me and we tried the actual key and at first it didn't work, we pushed the gas and it as as the gas pedal got stuck for about 30 seconds but started. Then driving down route 26 from johnson creek, WI to janesville, WI, it was making squeaking noises from the engine. We could hear it through the heating vents. Then the tire pressure warning light came on and it kept dinging. When I got to janesville, I checked the tire pressure on all the tires and it was fine. Because I live in rockford, IL, I drove down i90 and the car at times started shaking like it was going died. Again, today it won't start not even with an actual key. Also, the driver side passenger door lock is not working and had to have a part ordered. The vehicle has , miles.

4 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 05/31/

Vehicle has failed to start on multiple occasions. The vehicle has been to the dealership as well as other repair shops on several occasions. No one could diagnose the issue since it was occurring intermittently. We have had the battery and starter replaced in hopes of correcting the underlying issue. The car has also stalled once while slowing down. The various lights on the console flashed and the dvd player quit working after this episode. After online research we now believe it might be an issue with the tipm and will have this tested.

5 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 12/18/

The engine will die as I'm driving down the highway. This causes me to lose power steering, all my digital guages on dash, etc. When I pull over stop and put it in neutral I can then turn the key and it will start right back up. This has happened at least 6 times while driving on the highway or in town but always while moving and for no apparent reason. Possible touched the key chain with my knee but I can't say anything triggered it. First thing I notice is I'm slowing down and have to power steering. Also, when starting the car the ignition regularly does not recognize that I've turned the key. Requires that I push the key in with force up and to the right while rotating for the key to activate the ignition. Sometime the engine will begin to start but stop when I let go of the key. My dealer said it could be the battery or the remote car starter. I've replaced both and still have the same problem. Now they are quoting me about $ to replace the key fobs and ignition. I was told by a mechanic this is the exact type of problem that all the town & countries & Routans have had and there was a recall. It's a plastic key that wears out and stops working properly. Checking on-line vw Routan, Dodge caravan & chysler town & country all had a recall on their ignitions, but it was limited to & I have the same issue described in the recall "inadvertent ignition key displacement from the run position, which would shut off the engine and depower safety systems, such as airbags, power steering and braking".

6 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 07/14/

While driving, the car will suddenly stall all lights will come on. Sometime it will start back up when pushing start button and other times it will take a few minutes. This usually happens when going under 10 mph. It is also sometimes difficult to start after all the lights will come on and then off. We have replaced the battery and starter and that hasn't fixed the issue.

7 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 05/02/

My tipm modules of the car is causing a lots of problems and that has affected my fuel pump, battery, and starter. I have to replace a new fuel pump,a new battery and a new starter and still the same problem is still persisting.

8 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 03/11/

Car has intermittent problems starting. Not an issue with the starter but possibly ignition or electrical system. Some light online research reveals this a a very common issue with this make/model. Car will start fine one time then next it won't . Sometimes it takes two tries, sometimes 15, sometimes it won't start for hours. The issue has occurred two days in a row now. Vw has an obligation to put out products that can safely start and get their customers either to where they need to be or away from an unsafe situation. It's not an issue of proper maintenance, it's an issue of poor and unsafe performance.

9 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 12/19/

For past 2 years I noticed my the van would not immediately start. Figured it was a fluke. In past year, my van has been towed to dealership for not starting after tries. Of course, as soon as it arrives the get it to start. Thankful under warranty. Nov wiring harness and starter replaced. Dec failed to start again. Back to dealer and working fine for them. Thankful under warranty. , but come on vm!! this is nuts. Why won't they recall and re place the tipem like chrystal did. I have been stranded too many times and had to 3 car seats each time.

10 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 11/16/

The car does not start after a stop. It takes hours before it restarts. Replaced battery, starter still same issue. Many other vw Routan owners have the same issue. The car has power but something is messed up in this car.

11 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 10/11/

As of January I have had the repeated issue of the car not starting when turned on. Note the recall on the ignition was done by the vw dealer previously. The car not starting at first occurred once and awhile. Then became more consistent, I replaced the starter in March thinking that would resolve the issue. Since then the problem keeps occurring. Vw dealer has no idea what the issue is and wants me to replace the starter again. I've researched this mechanical problem and found out a lot of people are having the same issue. There's a click when you attempt to start the car and this is after the battery and starter has been replaced. The longest I've waited for the car to start is about 30 minutes. I attempt to start it a few minutes are sitting in the car, sometimes it takes one try sometimes it takes 20 tries then the car will start up. I've reported this to vw care and they advised me to get the starter replaced again, spending more money. This is not a customer care issue, this is on the vw company.

12 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 10/05/

The contact owns a Volkswagen Routan. While driving 60 mph, the contact detected a burning odor without warning. In addition, the contact observed smoke outside and inside the vehicle. The contact stated that the instrument panel, headlights, and radio failed to work. The contact was able to pull the vehicle over, opened the hood, and saw no sign of a fire. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the wire from the ignition switch to the starter had failed (burned) and needed to be replaced. Also, the power steering line failed and leaked. The independent mechanic stated that there were so many electrical failures with the vehicle and recommended her to contact NHTSA. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 15v and 14v (electrical system: ignition switch). The failure mileage was ,

13 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/14/

The car will not start up the engine no matter how long I crank. Battery and starter seem ok. The problem has no warning on the dashboard whatsoever.

14 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/01/

Car will not start, though the starter is engaged. Similar problem in neutral or park.

15 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 08/10/

Our van has stopped without warning while driving it (in motion on a side street and has felt like it might stop on the highway) and it now won't start after fixing both the battery and starter. There are no warning lights on and for some reason the VIN is not included in the recalls that have been active for other Routans with the same problems.

16 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 06/23/

Engine will not start. Happens on occasion but happened enough that I had two starters installed as well as a battery. What else could it be? can turn the key and nothing happens. I can possibly sit there and turn the ignition 10+ times and still nothing. Thought it could be a bad spot in the new starter?? cleaned battery posts often and now have treated the connections. Would like not to receive another call from lovely wife that the van would not start. Has to be something with a circuit staying open or something. Safety issue due to not knowing if your car is going to start when you arrive to a destination. Issue has been going on for 2+ years and van has k miles last instance of issue: 23 June

17 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 10/27/

The car won't start intermittently. When you turn the key it just clicks. The starter is not engaged or the flywheel doesn't turn. Took it to the dealer said it was faulty tipm module needed to be replaced not covered by warranty. Google tipm Routan/ Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep and you will see this is a huge problem. Not sure why the government won't force Chrysler / Volkswagen (Chrysler manufactured the Routan for Volkswagen) to recall them affected vehicles. This not covered by warranty and its a $ to replace. Completely ridiculous if this is such a widespread problem.

18 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/18/

Recently the van has given me trouble upon startup. The problem is intermittent. Sometimes, it would start fine. Other times, it would take multiple attempts to start the vehicle. Other times, the vehicle would start, then immediately turn itself off. Sometimes, it would be like there wasn't enough charge to turn the starter, and other times, when it would start then die, it felt like it was running out of gas. After much research, I discovered that the totally integrated power module is the culprit of these issues. Specifically, it is the fuel pump relay that can intermittently not turn on, or turn off randomly. It is a well-known issue with these vans and its Dodge grand caravan and Chrysler town n country cousins, upon which the vw Routan is based. Fca has stepped up to the plate, and issued a recall on many of its vehicles for faulty tipm's, but vw seems to want to forget that its customers chose their version over the others. It's a shame, because I like vw. My family drove only vw's during my youth, and that played into my decision to get the Routan. It looks like I won't be purchasing a vw product in the future. This doesn't even mention the other big issue that certain year Routans/grand caravan/t&c's can have, which is a complete failure of the front cylinder head. Again, in this case, Chrysler issued an extended warranty on that particular part, but vw made no effort to extend its warranty on those parts. I have called multiple vw service shops in the greater DC area, and none of them have heard of a warranty extension on the cylinder heads. If vw has issued an extension, then they haven't done a very good job of informing dealer service shops, or notifying their customers. It's a huge disappointment. Get your act together vw of America. . Read more

19 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/07/

In July our Routan would not start up immediately. Would sometimes fire up in neutral and sometimes after several trys it would start up in park. After several days we took the battery in to have it checked (after replacing it and the alternator about 6 months ago). Our battery was totally dead. Bought new expensive battery which failed again after a few days. Took car to repair shop and they said no codes came up and starter, battery alternator were all fine. Decided to unhook battery when we weren't using car because something obviously is draining it. That seemed to work but last week while on the interstate the van suddenly cut off completely when slowing down for exit ramp. Managed to pull van to side and not get hit by cars behind us without power steering. Very scary. After several attempts we got it started again. However, this morning it wouldn't start at all. In reading complaints I've found that Dodge caravans and other models have the exact same problem. The vw Routan was manufactured by Dodge and the same year of is under investigation for failed tipm boards. Van is 5 years old. Our daughter was in the back of the van when this happened. All power was lost. Has a recall been issued on this part yet? for fuel pump and then plus for the tipm board. Are you kidding me! so disappointed in vw. So many problems. Very frustrated customer!! we could have been killed! family of 4 with 1 vehicle and it's not working and only 5 years old. Currently relying on friends for transportation.

20 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 05/19/

For years I have experienced intermittent failures in starting my car, each time if I wait a while it will start. Additionally, beginning in Feb , my engine will simply shut down while the car is in motion (pretty scary). I have dealt with vw several time to no avail and always at my expense. This latest development may cost me or someone else their life. Vw acts like this has not happened to anyone else and if they can't recreate the issue they can't address the issue, really! this is criminal! I have had a starter replaced as well as a switch and no change. All I get from vw is "you can take it to another dealer and get a second opinion we will cover 1 hour of the cost to diagnose the problem" really no greater expertise no information sharing, just another dealer, the third of which will likely tell me, we can't create the problem!.

21 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 02/16/

The vehicle does not start periodically. The vehicle will start for 2 to 3 weeks and then not start several times. If you wait for a period of time or play with the fuse box, or try different ways to start the vehicle it will start. This is an electrical problem. I have been driving and had all the dashboard lights illuminate and have beeping noises for no reason. No warning lights are illuminated and no errors are on the computer. The vehicle has a new battery and alternator. I have read online the entire tipm unit(fuse box/electrical system control unit) is defective and needs to be replaced along with the starter and fuel pump relays, which is well over $ worth of work, but I have not had it completed yet. Others have complained about the vehicle turning off while driving, which fortunately has not happened to me yet. The vehicle has a dvd system that worked and does not work now. This should have been a recall item a long time ago, since I understand Volkswagen is well aware of the issue.

22 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 01/21/

I bought a certified pre-owned Routan. After about a year, the car randomly will not start, it just clicks but will not start. Replaced battery. Still - car will not start. This has been going on for 3 years. Had starter & alternator checked - both good. Had the ignition recall done and problem resolved itself for about 3 months - now it started doing this again - randomly will not start. Hubby moved a wire under the hood and magically the car started. Got home and van will not start! after spending $5, on a new transmission - I hate to put any more $$ into this van. Has anyone found a fix for this problem - I've seen many have this same issue. Talked to a lady at vw repair shop who has been in excess of $3, trying to fix this exact same problem. Still keeps happening. Help!.

23 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 02/25/

Tipm failure. This should be a mandatory recall. System loses power while moving. Will not start. Battery, alternator, starter -- all test normal. A car manufacturer can not knowingly allow people to operate a vehicle that could result in a devastating crash.

24 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 01/01/

The car will not start at times and make clicking sounds. This vehicle has been doing that for quite some time (at 80, miles) it is now , miles. I have taken it just about everywhere and done just about everything. No one can figure out what's wrong with it. I have changed the recall (win module), new starter,.

25 Starter problem of the Volkswagen Routan

Failure Date: 09/27/

My key has been sticking in the ignition intermittently. Usually I have to turn the car back on turn the wheel, put it in gear and back in park, one or both of those things usually frees the key from the acc mode and allows me to remove it from the ignition. Today, I went to start the van and it is dead. Click. That is all it does. It does not appear the battery is dead, as the headlights and interior lights come on, the door dings, the mileage comes up, etc. There is a recall for something involving the ignition, but I have not been informed by vw yet as to a repair. I have sent in four prior complaints concerning this vehicle. I bought it used 7/ from carmax. It is unreliable and dangerous to have on the road. The entire brake system needs repaired every 7, miles following a sudden caliper seize, the van has numerous electrical issues that cause the car to just stop. One day I heard it running in my garage. I cant rule out one of my children messing with the fob, however, I have difficulty with the remote starter myself? (click2x&hold) I do not feel safe with this vehicle. I will not drive my children long distances or travel roads with them that require speeds over 40 mph. The van died while I was driving it mph on a busy highway, the vw dealership said it was not a recall issue. I clearly see it is a recall issue for some Routans, my receipt reads exactly as the side door harness recall is stated. I will be working with vw to request reimbursement, however, I don't feel that is good enough. There is a major problem here. I am lucky myself or my children have not been hurt. In hindsight of the gm ignition recall, I would be amiss to think a car company has my best interest in mind. I am hoping my government does.
