Web of Spider-Man is the name of two different monthly comic book series starring Spider-Man that have been published by Marvel Comics since 1985, the first volume of which ran for 129 issues between 1985 and 1995, and the second of which ran for 12 issues between 2009 and 2010.

Publication history[edit]

Volume 1[edit]

The first volume of Web of Spider-Man published by Marvel Comics for 129 issues between April 1985 and October 1995.[1] It replaced Marvel Team-Up as the third major Spider-Man title of the time. Web of Spider-Man Annual ran for ten issues from 1985 to 1994.[2]

The series was launched with an April 1985 cover dated issue by writer Louise Simonson and penciller Greg LaRocque[3] and featured the return of Spider-Man's alien black costume, which attempted to rebond with Peter Parker. Peter managed to rid himself of the costume again using church bells and the alien was presumed to have died after that. The first issue featured a cover painting by artist Charles Vess.[4]

In issue #18 (September 1986), Peter Parker is pushed in front of an oncoming train. He thinks to himself that this should not have happened, as his spider-sense would have warned him of the danger. Writer David Michelinie has said that he wrote this as the first "teaser" appearance of the character Venom,[5] whom he was planning to introduce at a later date. Venom is an amalgam of reporter Eddie Brock and the alien costume. The costume could nullify Spider-Man's spider-sense, and this was the first clue of a puzzle that Michelinie was planning to weave to introduce Venom.[6]

Web of Spider-Man Annual #2 (1986) featured stories drawn by Arthur Adams[7] and Mike Mignola. A followup to the Spider-Man vs. Wolverine one-shot appeared in issue #29.[8] The "Kraven's Last Hunt" storyline by writer J.M. DeMatteis and artists Mike Zeck and Bob McLeod began in issue #31 (October 1987).[9]

The "Tribute-to-Teen-Agers" story in issue #35 saw the debut of the creative team of writer Gerry Conway and artist Alex Saviuk.[10][11]Web of Spider-Man #50 featured guest-appearances by several minor Marvel super-heroes such as the Puma, the Prowler, and Rocket Racer.[12] A hologram on the cover of issue #90 (July 1992) marked the 30th anniversary of Spider-Man's first appearance.[13] A four-part crossover with Ghost Rider/Blaze: Spirits of Vengeance began in issue #95(December 1992).[14] Spider-Man donned "Spider-Armor" in issue #100's story by Terry Kavanagh and Alex Saviuk.[15]

The "Clone Saga" storyline began in issue #117 (October 1994)[16] and Ben Reilly became the Scarlet Spider in the next issue.[17]

After issue #129 in October 1995, the title was renamed Web of Scarlet Spider and started again at #1. After four issues, the series was cancelled to make way for the new The Sensational Spider-Man title.

Volume 2[edit]

In December 2009, Web of Spider-Man volume 2 debuted as a new anthology title replacing Amazing Spider-Man Family,[18] with the initial story written by J. M. DeMatteis focusing on Kaine. The title also served as the new home for Spider-Girl, who was written by Tom DeFalco and illustrated by Ron Frenz, the character having first appeared on Marvel.com as The Spectacular Spider-Girl. The stories feature characters tied to "The Gauntlet" storyline, such as Electro, the Rhino, the Lizard, and many more from Spider-Man's colorful rogues gallery, each titled "Gauntlet: Origins, ...". The series ended in November 2010 with issue #12.

There is no hero more synonymous with Marvel Comics than Spider-Man.

Amazing Spider Man #546 variant by Bryan HitchEver since his debut in August of 1962, Peter Parker as Spider-Man has experienced more widespread recognition, popularity, and prolific appearances than any other Marvel hero debuted before or since. Even after he transformed from a scrawny nerd to a superhero, Peter Parker remained relatable thanks to his air of an underdog who somehow found a way to win. He’s also a fine role model, with the motto “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.”

Over fifty years of comic books focused on just one hero means there are many great Spidey stories out there to read – so many, in fact, that it is hard to know where to begin or what order they should be read in. Add to that the gradual appreciation of back issues, and for a new fan it might seem like enjoying Spider-Man is an insurmountable task.

Luckily, the vast majority of those comics have been collected into dozens of softcover graphic novels, called “trade paperbacks,” and the issues they contain fall into a discernible reading order. This page covers all of them – every issue, every collection – close to every appearance. If you want to figure out the best way to read Spidey, this page is your headquarters.

Silver Age Spider-Man

Spider-Man's debut in Amazing Fantasy #15Spider-Man was introduced in the final issue of anthology series Amazing Fantasy in 1962, where his origin as an every-day geek turned crime-fighter via mad science and an unfortunate tragedy captured the imagination of an adoring public. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko quickly debuted him in his own title only a few months later, where his first issue featured a guest appearance from The Fantastic Four!

Unlike other pencillers of the time, Ditko’s illustrations of Spider-Man and his gallery of rogues have hardly aged – his iconic early covers depict a bold, lithe version of Spidey that remains relevant to this day. John Romita, Sr. took over art duties with issue #39, and began a run with Lee that would close out the decade and include a series of classic stories still referenced today.

The easiest way to collect this run in full color to is to buy it in Omnibus edition:

Review: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #48 – A Heart-Wrenching Dilemma

As the Sin-Eater continues to create chaos in Spider-Man’s life, the web-slinger faces a deeply emotional dilemma in The Amazing Spider-Man #48, out this week from Marvel Comics.

Amazing Spider-Man #48 Sin-Eater

About the book:
The Sin-Eater has been recruiting anyone who wants to help him bring “justice” to “sinners,” and an overwhelming amount of people have signed up for his cause. Now, Spider-Man has to deal with a mob of hate-filled followers while also questioning whether he should save the Sin-Eater’s next target, Norman Osborn. Spider-Man enlists the help of several other heroes with spider-powers to not only support him as he fights off Sin-Eater’s followers but also emotionally as he decides whether to save one of the worst people he has ever known.

The Amazing Spider-Man #48 Story

Nick Spencer does a perfect job of inspiring emotion in the reader in The Amazing Spider-Man #48. The choice that Spider-Man is faced with is difficult to make with any villain, especially when the Sin-Eater isn’t killing them. By “cleansing” villains, it isn’t apparent that the Sin-Eater is doing anything wrong, but Spider-Man knows there will be unforeseen consequences in the future. By having the villain in question be Norman Osborn, the decision of whether to save him or not becomes so much harder. Miles Morales had the Spider-Man of his world killed by the Green Goblin. Gwen Stacy died because of the Green Goblin. If he continues to live, he will kill again. Having the decision Spider-Man has to make, be about Norman was such a fantastic choice, and bringing in other heroes to help him choose brought out all the emotion attached to the decision, and made the issue an utter pleasure to read. The conversations in the issue pulled easily at heart-strings since they were all based around deep history related to the characters, and the issue continued to build until the shocking conclusion that leaves you with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger.

Amazing Spider-Man #48 City

Art

The pencils of Mark Bagely and the inks of John Dell once again come together to give us some astonishing art in The Amazing Spider-Man #48. The city contains so many beautiful buildings in the background, action sequences have so many dynamic poses and motion lines that they come to life on the page, and figures and objects often overlap the edges of panels, which causes them to stand out. Every page is a pleasure to look at, but perhaps the most important thing that Bagely and Dell are able to do in this issue is give the characters expressive faces. With so much of the issue focusing on the internal conflict of Spider-Man, it’s important to show it through facial expressions, and Ferreira and Poggi are able to do just that.

David Curiel does some great work in The Amazing Spider-Man #48, with many uses of vibrant colors that bring so much life to the page. The establishing shots of the city are particularly stunning, with a wide variety of colors being showcased. The use of bright colors in action scenes increases the energy of the scenes and the bright-colored backgrounds that Curiel chooses let characters pop out while they are performing certain actions.

Amazing Spider-Man #48 Fighting

The lettering of VC’s Joe Caramagna does an excellent job of presenting the dialogue in a way so that the story flows naturally. This is especially important for emotional scenes, such as the ones in The Amazing Spider-Man #48. Caramagna also provides many different colored sound effects during fight sequences, which highlight just how much fighting Spider-Man and his friends have to do to ward off Sin-Eater’s followers.

Conclusion

The Amazing Spider-Man #48 is one of the best issues to come out of the Sins Rising event, and that says a lot when you compare it to the quality of the other issues. The story is captivating throughout every page, and the art complements it all so well. By the end, this issue leaves you with your heart aching from the emotional conversations Spider-Man has with other spider-powered people and your jaw open from the awe-inspiring cliffhanger.
