Netflix partners with Sirius XM on new comedy channel, ‘Netflix Is A Joke’

For the first time, Netflix is making its content available to another subscription media service. The company announced today it will bring segments from its popular stand-up specials, plus other original content, to Sirius XM’s new comedy station called “Netflix Is A Joke,” beginning on April 15, 2019.

The station will be offered on Sirius XM’s Channel 93, and will offer highlights from Netflix stand-up specials, comedy talk shows and other original programming, says Netflix.

This includes content from big names like Adam Sandler, Aziz Ansari, Bill Burr, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Ellen DeGeneres, Gabriel Iglesias, Jerry Seinfeld, John Mulaney, Ken Jeong, Ricky Gervais, Sarah Silverman, Sebastian Maniscalco, Trevor Noah, Wanda Sykes and others.

The channel will also introduce its own original daily show, filmed at Sirius XM’s new L.A. studios, where famous celebs and comedians will drop by to discuss pop culture and other hot topics of the day.

The deal with Sirius XM represents a notable milestone for Netflix, as it hasn’t before partnered with another subscription-based media company to reach a new audience with its content. It likely chose to do so in this case because Sirius XM isn’t a direct competitor. Plus, the radio platform could serve to promote Netflix’s programming to a valuable target demographic — those willing to pay for access to original content.

In addition to the clips and segments from Netflix shows, Sirius XM listeners will also be the first to hear new material from top comics, before their Netflix specials launch on the streaming service.

“Netflix Is A Joke Radio on SiriusXM will be an audio extension of our award-winning stand-up comedy on Netflix,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, in a statement. “We are thrilled to feature some of the greatest and funniest performers in the world with highlights from Netflix shows as well as original programming that further celebrates the art of comedy, and we are excited to do this in partnership with SiriusXM.”

The channel is now one of several comedy stations offered on Sirius XM, along with Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud Radio Channel, Comedy Central Radio, Raw Dog Comedy, Jeff & Larry’s Comedy Roundup and SiriusXM Comedy Greats, among others.

It also arrives shortly after SiriusXM announced another new station to capitalize on its Pandora merger: Pandora NOW, the first station to stream across both services.

Similarly, the new Netflix station will also stream content that’s available elsewhere. That’s a bit of a shift from SiriusXM’s earlier model, where it focused largely on exclusives, to one that acknowledges the power another big-name brand can bring to its service.

“SiriusXM is delighted to become the audio home for Netflix’s blockbuster comedy programming,” said Scott Greenstein, president and chief content officer, SiriusXM, in a release. “Netflix has established itself as the unrivaled video source for stand-up, attracting the biggest names in the industry as well as break-out newcomers, and we’re eager to deliver SiriusXM subscribers access to their star-studded library, new specials, and original live shows,” he added.

  • A few of our listeners who have specific types of radios may experience minor technical issues once these channel additions and adjustments are completed. Most of these issues can be easily solved by giving your radio a few extra minutes to finish updating the first time you power it up on or after August 17. Other potential issues and troubleshooting tips are provided below.

  • What will happen to my radio on August 17?

Just give your radio a few extra moments to update when you first turn it on. Why? Your radio may need 2-5 minutes to receive the updated lineup from our satellites. During this time, the audio you hear may not match what is shown on your display and you may see messaging such as "updating channels" or "acquiring signal" on your radio's display.

Let it update. Please do not change channels while your radio is updating, as this will delay the update from being completed.

Once the update is complete, tune to the channel you want to hear and you're all set.

Visit to download the updated channel guide so you can quickly find the new channels and any favorites that may have moved.

Some listeners may need to take additional action on or after August 17 if one or more of the following applies:

    • You have an XM dock and play radio and your audio does not match the channel you are tuned to, your presets return the wrong channel or some of the new channels are missing.
    • You have a Sirius radio and you use the channel preset or channel blocking features on your radio.
    • You subscribe to Mostly Music, Family Friendly, Basic or Espanol package.
    • You have a Sirius or XM radio model that is able to record programming and you have set up a specific program or programs to be recorded.
    • You are having some other technical issue with your radio that began on or after August 17.

  • Will I have to reset my radio presets?

Probably not. On August 17 (or whenever you first turn your radio on after that date), your radio preset buttons should automatically sync to the new locations for any channels that you've chosen as presets. If this does not happen automatically, follow the instructions included with your vehicle owner's manual to quickly update your presets.

  • Will my Sirius radio presets point to the new channel locations?

If you have a Sirius radio and your presets no longer take you to your favorite channels, you may have to reset one or more of your preset buttons.

This is easy to do and should only take a few moments. Please consult your vehicle owner’s manual for assistance.

    We apologize for any inconvenience.

Click here to see the full channel guide—or to customize your own, click here.

  • I have an XM dock-and- play radio. The audio does not match the channel I am tuned to. The preset buttons return the wrong audio or some of the new channels are missing. What should I do?

Some XM receivers will continue trying to update even after they have been properly updated. Simply push the POWER button to turn your radio on, wait three to five minutes, and then press the POWER button again to turn the radio off (turning the car's ignition off and on does not count). Your XM radio should work properly the next time you turn your radio back on.

Please consult your vehicle owner’s manual for further assistance.

  • The labels on my XM radio preset buttons no longer match the channel name/number displayed on my radio.

This issue may occur if you drive a Model Year 2008 or later GM vehicle with a pre-installed XM radio. If this occurs, you will need to update the preset button labels on your radio. This is a simple procedure:

Press and hold the preset button until you hear a beep.

The preset button label should then match the name and number of the channel you're tuned to. Follow the instructions that came with your radio to quickly reset those channels.

Please consult your vehicle owner’s manual for further assistance.

    We apologize for any inconvenience.

  • I have an XM radio and the programming I hear does not match the channel name/number displayed on the radio.

A small number of dealer-installed XM Satellite radios used predominantly in Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles may not properly adjust to the new channel locations on or after August 17.

If you have one of these radios you may notice that the programming you hear does not match the channel name and number you see on your radio. As you tune up and down the dial, the sequence of channel names you see may not match the sequence of programming that you hear as you change the channels.

Click on the appropriate link below for printable instructions for performing what is called a "Channel List Update," the process that will correct this behavior. Important: There are different sets of instructions based on your vehicle and model year.

    • For Toyota/Scion model years 2012 or later with a touch screen, click here.
    • For Toyota/Scion model years before 2012 and Lexus model years before 2010, click here.

    • If you hear nothing, if the channel number does not appear, or if you see a message like "unsubscribed channel", you will need to refresh your radio.

If you have a Sirius radio and subscribe to a Family Friendly package, here’s how to determine if your radio requires a refresh.

The first time you turn on your radio beginning August 17:

    • Allow your radio to update. This might take a few minutes.
    • When your radio has finished updating tune to Channel 41.

    • If you hear nothing, if the channel number does not appear, or if you see a message like "unsubscribed channel", you will need to refresh your radio.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Click here for a copy of these instructions that you can print out and take to your vehicle.

  • Listeners with a Sirius radio and a subscription to a Mostly Music, Basic, Español or Family Friendly package may need to refresh their radio on or after August 17.

Why? Without the refresh, your Sirius radio may begin receiving some channels that should not be included with the package you've chosen, or you might be missing others that you expect to hear.

You can easily refresh your radio from right inside your vehicle by visiting on your smartphone. You can also send a refresh signal by calling toll-free to 855-MY REFRESH (855-697-3373). Important: Be sure to have your 12-digit Radio ID (or ESN#) before you begin.

    A few tips to remember:

    • If you refresh your Sirius radio before August 17, you may still need to perform this action again on or after August 17 to realign your channels with your current subscription package.
    • Your radio must be turned on to receive the refresh signal, and your car antenna must have a clear view of the sky, so make sure your vehicle is not in a garage. If your radio is located inside your vehicle, it's easiest to go to from your smartphone, enter your Radio ID or ESN and click the "Send Refresh Signal" button. If you don't have a smartphone, simply call us (855- 697-3373) from inside your vehicle when you're ready to perform the refresh. You may also schedule a refresh from your computer by going to our website.
    • Whichever method you choose, remember that the signal will be sent to your radio within a few moments of your request, so make sure your radio is turned on before requesting the signal. If you accidentally miss the refresh signal, please repeat the process above.

The stand-up sets of comedy’s biggest names are among the lineup for SiriusXM Comedy Greats, a new channel from the satellite radio company that will broadcast stand-up comedy 24/7, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Jerry Seinfeld, George Carlin, Ellen DeGeneres, Kevin Hart, Bill Maher, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor and Joan Rivers also are noted as some of more than 100 notable comics of past and present that will be showcased on air.

The new channel — one of eight that focuses on comedy — also will feature regular countdown takeovers, hosted by such guests as Bill Burr, Jim Gaffigan and Ed Helms, who will discuss their personal favorites and professional influences. Additionally, Dan Akyroyd, Adam Carolla, Cedric the Entertainer, Bill Hader, George Lopez, Howie Mandel, Marc Maron and Russell Brand will share vignette-like stories about comedians who have changed their lives.

SiriusXM Comedy Greats will launch Aug. 13, with a special hosted by Jim Norton, in which he counts down the top 50 comedy greats of all time (selected by listeners and the SiriusXM comedy team). It is available on channel 94, as well as online, on demand and through the SiriusXM app.
