Three Spiritual Warfare Tactics And How to Defend Against Them

13 Feb Three Spiritual Warfare Tactics And How to Defend Against Them

As we saw last week, there are two kinds of spiritual warfare: Resistible and Non-resistible, which call for two different responses. This week we will look at the fact that the devil uses three different spiritual warfare tactics against Christians. He might use any one of these tactics in both the resistible and the non-resistible kinds of spiritual warfare.

  1. Dirty Tricks: These are negative circumstances the enemy uses to deceive and defeat us. They include challenging circumstances that we might not even know are satanic in origin.

For example, in the first chapter of Job, we see Job’s life being devastated. One day, he had fabulous wealth, a large family and good health. Then, virtually overnight, he lost it all.

At the time, Job had no way of knowing why the tragedies befell him. They all had a natural explanation. However, in the Bible, we learn that all of the incidences were a result of spiritual warfare.

  1. Mind Games: Another tactic of spiritual warfare is “Mind Games” which the enemy uses to deceive Christians.

Satan is the great trickster, the great illusionist, the great con-artist, and the great liar. Referring to the devil, Jesus said, in John 8:44: “Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Satan plays games with our minds to get us to believe that…

  • that which is false is true
  • that which is bad is good
  • that which is wrong is right

If we know Satan’s mind games, we can be prepared to resist them.  Like walking through a camouflaged mine-field we must always be alert to the danger of satanic deception.

  1. Hand-to-Hand Combat: Occasionally, the enemy comes out from behind his Dirty Tricks and Mind Games, and engages God’s people directly in Hand-to-Hand Combat.

This involves direct opposition by evil spirits to God’s will and God’s people. We see an example of this when Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness when Satan spoke directly to Jesus and tried to deceive Him and tempt Him into sinning (Matthew 4).

There are many times in the Bible when we see direct confrontation with evil spirits (for example, Luke 8: 26-30; Acts 19:14-16), and such things are being seen more and more today as the light of the gospel dims in our world. Of course, one of the most frequent sources of such reports comes from missionaries, often in very primitive cultures, who tell stories of direct demonic confrontations.

In summary, we may not be sure, especially with Dirty Tricks and Mind Games, when something is spiritual warfare or when it may be accounted for by truly natural circumstances.

However, in the Bible we see spiritual warfare being behind a number of life problems:

  • Unusual circumstantial calamity, as in the book of Job.
  • Physical maladies. (Luke 13:11)
  • Severe depression and mental instability. (1 Samuel 16:14-15)
  • Inaccurate and faulty thinking. (2 Timothy 2:24–26)
  • Thoughts raised up against God. (2 Corinthians 10:3–5)

This is not a complete list, but is a list of examples from Scripture of the kinds of things the enemy does to wreak havoc in the lives of people.

The Bible teaches that there are three defenses we have in spiritual warfare.

  1. Be Alert

First, we must be alert to its reality. If we aren’t, we are vulnerable. Peter said, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). To be clueless is a great disadvantage in spiritual warfare – ignorance is not bliss!

  1. Put on the Armor

Second, we must put on spiritual armor, which is a metaphor for being spiritually prepared. The armor is found in Ephesians 6:14–17:

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (NIV)

What it means to put on each piece of armor includes:

Belt of truth: “I accept the truth of the Scripture and will follow it with integrity.”

Breastplate of righteousness: “I will not harbor known sin and I will strive to be like Christ.”

Shoes of peace: “I believe God’s promises, and count on them to be true for me.”

Shield of faith: “Whenever I feel like doubting or sinning or quitting, I will reject those thoughts and feelings, and tell myself the truth.”

Helmet of salvation: “I rest my hope in the future, and live in this world according to the values of the next.”

Sword of the Spirit: “I will use the Scripture to fend off attacks of the enemy and to advance the cause of Christ.”

  1. Resist the Devil

Third, if we are alert to spiritual attack, and if we have our armor on, the Bible makes it clear, as we saw last week, that we can resist the spiritual attack. In three different passages of Scripture, we are told to resist the enemy.

“Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.”  Ephesians 6:13

“‘God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”  James 4:6–8

“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith.”  1 Peter 5:8–9

The Bible does not tell us in these verses what it means to resist. But we can draw reasonable conclusions about How to Resist:

  1. Maintain a clear conscience: Ephesians 4:26-27 instructs us not to let the sun go down on our anger because it gives the devil an opportunity. This would seem to apply to any similar sin. We are to repent/confess quickly. Otherwise, it gives the enemy an advantage in our lives.
  2. Resist temptation: 1 John 2:15-17 instructs us to resist the lure of the world, flesh and devil.
  3. Control sinful thoughts: 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 tells us that the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but are divinely powerful, and that we are to destroy speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and that we are to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
  4. Quote Scripture: In Luke 4 and Matthew 4, we see Jesus resisting the devil by quoting Scripture to meet his every temptation.
  5. Pray: In the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus was praying before His arrest, He urged His disciples to “pray that you may not come into temptation”(Matthew 26:41).

As we are alert to the devil’s tactics in our lives – Dirty Tricks, Mind Games and Hand to Hand Combat – and as we use the three biblical defenses to counter the enemy – Be Alert, Put on the Armor and Resist – we will be victorious in our battles in spiritual warfare.

And, by “victorious”, I mean either the devil will flee from us if we are in “resistible warfare”, or if we are in “non-resistible warfare”, these defenses will give us the ability to remain faithful to the Lord while the spiritual battle lasts.

How to Engage in Spiritual Warfare
How to Engage in Spiritual Warfare
5 Ways to Engage in Spiritual Warfare

I have been thinking about tactics for fighting spiritual battles this week, after two recent, devastating shootings in the U.S. I hope this post gives you a different and valuable perspective on this difficult topic. You will find practical help for your own spiritual battles below.

The Source of Spiritual Battles

With the frequency of active shooters intensifying around the world, I’ve been pondering the why’s, like many of you.

I have yet to hear this possible explanation in the media, or even in church: Maybe active shooters are possessed by evil spirits.

These troubled individuals often have many other problems. Antisocial behavior. Mental instability. Broken childhoods. But perhaps, they are so far away from God, that they become prime targets for Satan to inhabit them. They become pawns in the worldwide spiritual battle with their evil acts.

In Jesus’ day, there were several people who were inhabited by evil spirits. These people wreaked havoc on their communities. We would probably label them mentally ill in our current terminology. They were unfit to live in normal society.

This story in Mark 5 about a certain man controlled by evil spirits has long intrigued me. He was unable to live with people and slowly destroying himself–much like the active shooters of today.

Jesus has the power to cast out evil spirits. He cast the evil spirits out of this man for his glory. People were astounded to see this man clothed and sane after his healing. His testimony had amazing power!

5 Key Tactics for Fighting Spiritual Battles

5 Key Tactics for Fighting Spiritual Battles

When I was a secretary at a high school a few years ago, I had to go through active shooter response training. I’m realizing the correlations to active shooter response training and spiritual warfare today. I’d like to equip you with what I’ve learned so you can fight your spiritual battles with greater power.

Pray with fervor.

When I worked at a Christian high school, I regularly prayed that God would protect our school. I had a vested interest as an employee, of course. I also cared deeply about the students and fellow staff members.  After years of being a prayer warrior in my personal faith walk, I knew that the power of prayer would work better than anything else to thwart an attack from a threatening person.

I am encouraging you today to pray that God will bind the power of evil spirits in your community. I regularly pray this over my children’s schools and all the other schools in our area. This is what I pray when I head to the mall for shopping, attend a big event like a St. Louis Cardinals game, or travel to a different area. Get in the habit of praying against the influence of evil spirits, and you’ll be actively engaged in spiritual warfare against Satan and his minions. I pray too that many lives would be changed for God’s glory, and that testimonies of spiritual rescue will amaze and inspire others.

Pay close attention.

In the active shooter response training I experienced, the sheriff demonstrated how a gun sounds when fired inside a building. It was far quieter than I would have ever expected…more like a box dropping off a shelf or a door slamming. Not a deafening explosion, to my surprise.

We must be vigilant in noticing Satan’s schemes. They may look, feel or sound different than we first expect. The more you learn about spiritual warfare, the more sensitive you will be to his tricks and lies. When you know his methods, you will not be taken by surprise when he attacks.

Don’t sit still.

The sheriffs told us that one of the reasons Sandy Hook Elementary had so many casualties is because the teachers instructed students to sit still and huddle together on the floor. They sadly became sitting targets for the shooter.

While our natural reaction to a spiritual attack is to freeze, it puts us in grave danger. It’s better to fight back with the powers God gives us (see Ephesians 6 for a detailed description of spiritual armor).

Don’t fight alone.

In our live classroom training, the sheriff taught us to fight as a group. We could grab whatever we wanted as weapons–books, staplers, desks, binders. The more of us willing to fight back, the more likely that we could take down the shooter without incident.

We cannot fight spiritual battles as effectively on our own. As I prepare for my book launch, I know that spiritual warfare is imminent, since Satan does not want my book to enlighten readers about spiritual warfare. I’m relying on several teams of people to cover me in prayer. Prayer is one of the very best weapons in fighting against our spiritual enemy. I encourage you to share your prayer requests with others (or with me by replying to this email). You will be able to defeat the devil faster when others are helping you.

Fight with intention.

The sheriff studied my work environment at the school. I sat in the reception area, surrounded by windows, near the front door. He said, “Unfortunately, you are sitting in a glass house, also the most vulnerable area in the school.” However, he taught me exactly what to do. He said I needed to run down the administrative hallway in a zig-zag pattern and take one of the doors that led outside ASAP. By running zig-zag instead of in a straight line, I would decrease the active shooter’s potential of hitting me. (Thankfully, I never had to deal with a real active shooter, and I’m blessed to work from home now!)

The more open you are about your faith, the more vulnerable of a position you are in for spiritual attacks. However, this should not discourage you–it should motivate you to have a detailed battle plan. You need to discover your own zig-zag pattern for dodging the enemy’s slings of fiery arrows. Ask God exactly what you need to do to fight back, and he will give you wisdom.

I know you’ll have feedback for me this week on such a dynamic topic! I’m interested in hearing your thoughts in the comments, and I hope you’ll check out the helpful links below for more information on spiritual warfare.

5 Spiritual Warfare Tactics You Need to Know About

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on Pinterest

Here are 5 spiritual warfare tactics that the enemy uses that you need to know about.

Putting on the Armor

Paul warns us that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Eph 6:12) which is why he tells us that we must “take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm” (Eph 6:13).

The spiritual armor includes 5 things that are needed and these 5 things correspond to at least 5 ways that the enemy tries to take us down.

An Assault on the Truth

The Enemy loves to mix truth with error and even a half-truth is a whole lie so beware of false ideas or teachings of those who appear to be a minister or an angel of light (2 Cor 11:14-15).  Place everything against the Word of God to see if it is true or not which is why Paul said that part of the armor is “having fastened on the belt of truth” (Eph 6:14a) and truth is found only in the Bible.

Compromising with Sin

Wicked spirits love it when we try to justify our sin.  Many that have tried to do this have used what I call “proof texting” methods.  That is they take a text out of context in order to make a false pretext by teaching or believing that “the Bible doesn’t really call that (whatever it is) sin.”  Beware of such methods which is why Paul said part of our armor should be “the breastplate of righteousness” (Eph 6:14b) which means that we are to strive to live a holy life and not compromise on sin because God doesn’t.

Another Gospel

We need to be aware that there is “the” gospel and other so-called gospels which Paul says are really no gospel at all (2 Cor 11:4).   All too often you’ll hear gospels that tell you that you should be doing certain things to complete your salvation but if you add one drop of poison to a bottle of spring water, it renders all of it as deadly so this is why Paul instructs believers to “put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace” (Eph 6:15) because works + salvation = nothing but Christ + nothing = eternal life (Eph 2:8-9).

An Attack on your Faith

Jude writes to “have mercy on those who doubt” (Jude 1:22) because many of us have doubts from time to time which is why Paul says we are to “take up the shield of faith” which the Enemy is constantly firing fiery darts at so this “shield of faith” is so that “you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one” (Eph 6:16).

Attacking our Mind

For many believers, their mind is frequently being assaulted by the Enemy by trying to put negative thoughts into our minds which is why we are told to “take the helmet of salvation” and put it on and then take up “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph 6:17).  Why is the helmet used?  Because it protects the head and our knowledge of God and the sword, which is the Word of God can be used to guard our minds with the immutable promises and truth of God.  The more you stick your head in the Word the more the Word sticks in your head.  Our knowledge of God’s promises are guarded by His Word and the more you read it, the more you can strengthen this “helmet of salvation” and having more and more reassurance of just how firm God’s Word is that you are saved (John 6:37, 39; John 10:28-29) and nothing, including death, life, rulers, angels, powers, things now or to come, or no created thing can ever separate you from God’s love (Rom 8:37-39) because we’ve read there is “now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rom 8:1).  That’s one strong helmet of salvation, isn’t it?

May God richly bless you,

If I knew how this meeting will change my whole life. But man only presumes. Approached the closing, Vera goes out with a friend and colleague, this one is definitely super tall, appetizing, strong, but slender girl, not a beauty, but.

Battle Tactics For Spiritual Warfare

The man was about 40 years old, he caught my eye on his penis (and there was something to see, his penis was huge even in a. Non-erect state), smiled, and I jumped out of the dressing room towards the resting booths as red as cancer. Having landed, I quickly took out a bottle of beer and, greedily swallowing, drank it all. Almost at that moment, the same man entered my booth (where I was before that there were not very many people on.

A working day).

Similar news:

I froze, letting him feel everything, feel everything. But I could not stand still for a long time, being completely immersed in such a sweet body. After a few seconds, which seemed like an eternity to me because of the impatience that was burning me, I began to move.

I leaned back slightly, just a little, a millimeter, and pressed, moving back forward, and this was enough for me to wave. After wave to cover the strongest pleasure.
