I woke up early to travel to Harman’s Luxury Log Cabins, where three generations of the Harman family have been welcoming guests to stay in their cabins in the woods since 1939. Fred Harman Roby who grew up here is taking me to his favorite fishing spot, where rainbow, brown, tiger and golden trout may be found on the North Fork of the South branch of the Potomac.
The Mountain State is well known for its fly fishing with many streams stocked regularly. The spring is a good time to fish for trout, and I tried my luck and got a few tips from Fred.
Fred had been fishing on the river since he was about six years old, so knows every rock, nook and cranny. Fred was teaching me how to roll cast, a technique that’s great to do if you have limited space behind you.
Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains about an hour from Harman’s fishing spot, don’t forget to also visit the small town of Thomas.
