Grand Lord of Worlds
Grand Kai (大界王,Dai Kaiō, lit. "Great King of the Worlds") is the king who oversees the four Kais, North Kai, West Kai, South Kai and East Kai, who rule over the four quadrants of the universe.
Although Grand Kai does not appear in the Dragon Ball manga, he is mentioned there. In fact, his characterization in the anime was suggested to the production staff by the manga's author Akira Toriyama himself.
Grand Kai is portrayed as an aged hipster, usually wearing jeans and a denim jacket, and constantly listening to rock music on his boom box. He wears black Wayfarer sunglasses, and owns a Blue 1958 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible. When overseeing the Other World Tournament, he wears yellow robes with a black mantle depicting the kanji symbol for Kai, as well as a hat with the kanji symbol for "Grand" on it.
Even though he is the teacher of the greatest warriors in the universe, Grand Kai is more of a sweet and kind grandfatherly figure than a traditional disciplinarian (much like Master Roshi). Paying no heed to respectful-but-cold formality, he lovingly treats his social inferiors as equals and dotes on them as if they were his own grandchildren. In the Japanese dub, he affectionately addresses younger warriors with suffix of "-chan" (e.g., Goku-chan, Paikuhan-chan), a term of endearment usually reserved for young children.

Other World Saga
Main article: Other World Saga
Goku is brought to Grand Kai's Planet by North Kai. When meeting them, Grand Kai gives Pikkon the mission to stop Cell's rebellion in Hell (although his initial wording of his command, alongside Goku's unfamiliarity with Grand Kai, made it seem as though he was telling Pikkon to go to Hell as an insult, causing Goku to think he was being rude).
Shortly after, Grand Kai holds an Other World Tournament on his planet with the prize being a lesson from himself. However the fight ends in a draw between Goku and Pikkon. Despite his position, he is not as strong as Pikkon or Goku, due to having neglected his training. This is why he uses the full breadth of the rules to keep from having to teach either of them immediately at the conclusion of the tournament.
Later on it is revealed that, despite his position, Grand Kai is not authorized to set foot on the Sacred World of the Kai.
Although Grand Kai doesn't make any appearance in the film, he was mentioned in the finale for the movie, where Goku learns from Bubbles in the midst of a meal that Broly (or at least a similar individual) was acting up in Hell and thus Grand Kai has dispatched both Goku and Pikkon to defeat the mad Saiyan, or at a bare minimum calm him down.
Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn Grand Kai, along with the other Kais, are present at Grand Kai's Planet to watch another Tournament featuring deceased warriors from across the universe. After a disturbance is caused by Janemba, Grand Kai sends both Goku and Pikkon to the Check-In Station so they see what is going on. He later watches the battles involving Janemba with the other Kai's on TV.
Grand Kai is considerably stronger than the other Kais, and is known to be the greatest fighter in the four quarters of the universe. When Goku and the East Kai have a race, the Grand Kai surprises the two of them by racing towards the exit before them even though he started much later, surprising Goku. However, he is not as strong as Pikkon with his weights removed or Goku as a Super Saiyan due to having neglected his training.
Video Game Appearances
In Dokkan Battle like Old Kai, Grand Kai appears as a card that can be used as a Training Partner to increase a character card's Super Attack Level. However, he has a card for each card type (AGL, STR, PHY, INT, and TEQ) and the cards only increase the Super Attack of cards that are the same type (for example a AGL type Grand Kai card can only increase the Super Attack Level of AGL type character cards) while Elder Kai's cards be used with cards of any type. Additionally, his cards are both rare and expensive as they have a 100% rate thus are gaurnteed to increase a card's Super Attack Level. As a result, they sell for a high amount of Zeni or Baba's Shop Points.
- Until the introduction of Supreme Kai, Grand Kai was the strongest known kai and widely believed by the mortals of Universe 7 to be the strongest in the universe. It is unknown if this middle rank exists in other universes because, with exception to Zamasu (a former Universe 10North Kai in line to become the new Supreme Kai), the only kais from other universes to be widely shown in the Dragon Ball media are the Supreme Kais.
- In his regal attire, Grand Kai resembles Melchior, a swordsmith from Chrono Trigger, whose characters were also designed by Akira Toriyama.
Dragon Ball: Ranking All The Supreme Kai By Power
The Kais are celestial beings who have been assigned to govern different quadrants of the universe. The Kais also have a ranking and hierarchy system which classifies both their position and importance. They are considerably powerful deities with various techniques such as materialization, telekinesis, and telepathy. The most fascinating skill and ability that they have is the ability to create life, as they are the ones that keep watch over all living things. They are responsible for keeping record across their assigned quadrants and sectors, while some of the Kais even have abilities unique only to them that allows them to fulfill their duties more appropriately.

11 South Kai
During his time in otherworld after the Cell Games, Goku travels to the Grand Kai's planet in order to receive special training. The Grand Kai decides to settle this decision by holding a tournament and training the victor as a reward. Every Kai brought some of their best fighters but the South Kai’s warriors were easily outmatched by every fighter. This makes him stand at the bottom of the list because his training was insufficient and unable to help his fighters secure victory. He is also greatly mocked by all the other Kais despite the standard boasting and mocking they do.
10 East Kai
The East Kai is more or less at the same level as South Kai, but because her fighters were somehow able to clear the qualifiers and even obtain victory for a significant number of battles, this at least proved that her training methods were efficient and effective to a certain degree.
RELATED: 50 Questions Every Dragon Ball Z Fan Should Be Able To Answer!
Her fighter, Aqua, was able to keep up with Goku who, despite holding back, was still one of the strongest fighters participating in the tournament. She even forced him to get serious, which proves that her training and capabilities were enough to make it worth Goku's time.
9 West Kai
Probably the most obnoxious and self-centered person you’ll see in the Dragon Ball Z series, the West Kai considers himself the top dog among the four Kais and has a rivalry with North Kai (King Kai) about being the best. He gets the 8th highest position due to his fighters reaching the quarter, semi, and final rounds of the tournament. His fighter, Pikkon, went toe to toe with Goku in the final round and was able to hold his own against him even after he had transformed into a Full-Power Super Saiyan. Therefore, it is evident that he is clearly stronger than both East and South Kai.
8 North Kai
North Kai, also known as King Kai, is the governor of the north quadrant and a big part of the series. He is the strongest out of the four Kais because his fighters showed exceptional skill despite seeming more human than the others. His fighters also reached the semi and final stages of the tournament. He mastered the ancient technique, the Spirit Bomb, and created his own physical ability boosting technique, the Kiaoken, which have both become two of the most iconic techniques of the series. They are an integral part of Goku's arsenal to defeat almost a villain he otherwise has difficulty against.
7 Grand Kai
An old looking man who seems quite similar to Roshi in terms of personality, the Grand Kai is the one in charge of overseeing the four Kais and is hinted at being far stronger than the four. He is both the teacher of some of the greatest warriors in the universe and one of the strongest warriors himself.
RELATED: How Dragon Ball Became The Most Popular Anime Ever
However, due to a lack of evidence, we can not deduce the complete potential he has or his fighting ability. Nevertheless, he is quite powerful given the position he holds and even seems confident enough to reach Goku’s level (Cell saga) after two hundred years.
6 Elder Kai
Old Kai, or more frequently referred to as Elder Kai, is the former Supreme Kai of Universe 7. After being fused to a witch by accident, Elder Kai gained magical abilities. He may be physically weaker than the others but his place on this list is purely because even though he has lost some of his godly powers, he is able to tap into an individual’s hidden potential and unlock it completely. Basically, he can bring out the best in someone without them having to do a single thing. He can also materialize certain objects and items.
5 Alternate Universe Supreme Kai
As the story of Super continues, we learn more about the hierarchy among the Gods and how it works. The hierarchy is similar to a military set up where there are multiple overseers and higher-ups, that each one has to report to regarding their universe. They are not greatly elaborated on but with the information that has been provided via episodes and manga publication, it is confirmed that they are strong enough to defeat Frieza (Pre Super) in a single blow. Lack of data places them just above the Old Kia until more details are revealed.
4 Shin (Supreme Kai)
Like his fellow supreme Kai, Shin is the serving overseer for Universe 7 and is quite strong as well. He is among the Supremes, which means that he is strong enough to defeat Frieza, before the events of Super, with a single blow.
RELATED: 10 Crazy Dragon Ball Fan Theories That Make No Sense
He is ranked above the other Supreme Kais because of the fact that we have seen him in action when he first appeared in the Buu Saga, which gives us more insight on his power and limitations with respect to the others. He was also able to briefly engage Zamasu who is one the strongest antagonists through the series.
3 Grand Supreme Kai
A position that has only been shown during the Buu Saga, the Grand Supreme Kai stands atop all the other Supreme Kai and is their overseer. The specifics of this position have never been elaborated on, and the only data we were given is his battle against Kid Buu. He is powerful enough to fend him off, and he even cut off and disintegrated his arm. He did this while Shin was easily beaten by Kid Buu in one or two moves. It is certain that he is far superior to his junior and his power is one to be impressed by.
Like Android 21, Chronoa was introduced as one of the main characters in Dragon Ball: Xenoverse. It is debatable whether she is canon or not because she did not appear in the manga or anime, but she is still considered Kai. Chronoa, like her name states, is the Supreme Kai of Time. Her job is to oversee the flow of time, removing any rogue or tampered timelines and temporal anomalies. Though she is considered as powerful as her fellow Kais, her time control ability edges her ahead of the Supreme Kai and possibly even the Grand Supreme Kai as she works without restrictions.
It's debatable whether or not Zamasu is a Kai himself. He was technically shown as a Kai apprentice, and the Potara Fusion he underwent was permanent, which is only unique to Kais. Originally the same as the other Kiaoshin, Zamasu trained himself to focus his energy into his hand and form a blade which is one of the strongest energy weapons in the series. Goku himself states, after beating him in a spar, that even Shin would not have stood a chance against him. Goku himself couldn't handle him very well as Zamasu had incredible adaptability and learning capability.

Grand Supreme Kai
Great Lord of Lords
The Grand Supreme Kai (,Dai Kaiōshin, lit. "Great God of the Kings of the Worlds*), known as Daikaioh in the initial Funimation dub, is the highest of all Supreme Kais and ruled over the entire Universe 7 before the series takes place.
He still exists through Good Buu (ブウ（）,Majin Bū (Zen), lit. "Demon Person Boo (Good)") and briefly acted through him thanks to being awakened to help stop Moro.
Grand Supreme Kai resembles the fat form of Majin Buu that his absorption would eventually create. He has pink skin and the same pointed ears as his other kin, as well as a Mohawk similar to Shin's but of a darker bluish color. His outfit consists of the shirt and trousers usually worn by Supreme Kais but without the regal tunic-like garment over the top. He wears an orange knotted cloth around his waist, as well as the same navy and yellow waistcoat and purple cape as Fat Buu. Also like Fat Buu, he has generic squinty eyes as well.
10 million years ago, the Grand Supreme Kai battled Moro alongside South Supreme Kai. By giving up most of his godly power, Grand Supreme Kai was able to seal Moro's magic power, and together they were able to defeat and imprison him.
Grand Supreme Kai lived on the Sacred World of the Kai along with the four other Supreme Kais. He was very peace-loving and gorged himself with food. When Majin Buu came to the planet, Grand Supreme Kai managed to save Shin from Buu. He battled Majin Buu, but was overwhelmed and absorbed. In the anime, he unleashed a powerful attack of his own that blasted Buu into pieces, however, Grand Supreme Kai was absorbed seconds later, when Buu's floating particles converged on him.
After Grand Supreme Kai was absorbed, Buu took a form that looks remarkably similar to Grand Supreme Kai. Grand Supreme Kai's presence within Buu pacifies him to a degree.

Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga
Main articles: Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga and Good Buu After Good Buu is carried off by the Galactic Patrol, Merus stuns Goku and Vegeta and boards them onto the ship. When the two Saiyans wake up, they're informed of the threat of Moro and are told of the battle that took place ten million years ago, where Grand Supreme Kai was forced to sacrifice most of his godly power to seal Moro's magic abilities away. Merus goes on, explaining how Moro has begun to regain his power, and that the only way to stop him was to somehow have Grand Supreme Kai stop Moro once again.
After Buu has awoken, the Galactic Patrol have their licensed hypnotist and aroma-therapist bring Grand Supreme Kai's memories to the surface within Buu, causing Buu to recognize Moro.
During his battle with Moro, the Grand Supreme Kai completely manifests himself through Good Buu, specifying that he will only be switching places with Buu until Moro is defeated. Along with Goku and Vegeta, they teleport directly to Moro at the edge of New Namek's atmosphere where they all attack him together. Noticing that Moro's real body is in fact in outer space, Grand Supreme Kai heads off to fight him alone as he is the only one capable of breathing in space. Despite putting up a valiant effort, Grand Supreme Kai is outmatched and so plans to seal his magic power once again using the Kai Kai Matoru though is unable to pull off the technique due to Goku having previously killed Kid Buu, destroying Grand Supreme Kai's power at the same time. Before receiving a finishing blow, he is saved by Merus who gives him the opportunity to grab a hold of Moro and teleport him back to New Namek where Goku and Vegeta and re-join the fight.
When Saganbo arrives with the rest of the escaped prisoners to join Moro's side, Grand Supreme Kai battles with Goku and Vegeta against the convicts but due to them being in an empowered state thanks to Moro's magic and Grand Supreme Kai's current injuries, he falls in battle. Under dire circumstances and New Namek's inevitable demise, Goku has no choice but to grab hold of everyone and make a hasty retreat. At some point shortly afterwards, Buu manifests himself back to normal and falls asleep.
During the final battle between Goku and Moro, Buu is woken up by Jaco so that he can provide Goku with enough god power to restore his Perfected Ultra Instinct. At some point shortly afterwards, the Grand Supreme Kai manifests himself through Buu once again and heads to Uub's village where he meets up with the young child Uub, whom he assists in channeling his god power, which originally belonged to the Grand Supreme Kai, to Vegeta so that it could be given to Goku. This proved instrumental in Moro's defeat at last.
The Grand Supreme Kai thanks Uub for his assistance before bidding farewell to him. The Grand Supreme Kai returns to the lookout where he reverts back to being Good Buu.

- Stop the Majin's Revival
In Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle, Grand Supreme Kai appears in the main story starting in Area 19: "Stop the Majin's Revival". Due to the dimensional distortion that Future Trunks and the Time Patrol are investigating causing the warping of timespace, Grand Supreme Kai and South Supreme Kai are not absorbed by Kid Buu who ends up sealed away inside the Sealed Ball instead of Innocent Buu. Additionally this causes Babidi and Dabura to begin the Majin Buu conflict before Gohan reaches adolescence. Knowing Babidi requires Genk (or normal Good ki) to revive Majin Buu, Grand Supreme Kai seeks out Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo due to their strength and having the ki Babidi requires. Goku has King Kai contact Future Trunks, Krillin, and the Time Patrol who have just finished fighting with Shula, Melee, and Gola who leave to continue their search for the missing Dabura, the True King of the Demon Realm whom unbeknownst to them had been enslaved by Babidi hundreds of years ago causing Demon Realm to be king-less apparently forcing Shula to act as Demon King in Dabura's absence though the dimensional distortion allowed them to leave Demon Realm due to it removing the barrier separating Demon Realm from the rest of the universe.
Grand Supreme Kai introduces himself to Future Trunks and Krillin before requesting their assistance in stopping Majin Buu's revival. Gohan asks to spar with Krillin and Future Trunks which Grand Supreme Kai allows due to wanting to witness their strength. Future Trunks and Krillin spar with Gohan, then Piccolo, then Goku. After defeating Goku's base form, Grand Supreme Kai requests Goku face them as a Super Saiyan. After sparring with SSJ Goku, Grand Supreme Kai decides to face them in battle himself though Krillin and Future Trunks are initially hesitant due to Grand Supreme Kai's position though Grand Supreme Kai tells them to go all-out. Future Trunks and Krillin defeat Grand Supreme Kai who is impressed with their strength and notes he was right about seeking their assistance.
- Plot of Darkness
In Area 20: "Plot of Darkness", Grand Supreme Kai and his new allies begin their search for Babidi and encounter Spopovich and Yamu whom had previously tried to steal Future Trunks and the Time Patrol's Genki. They manage to defeat the pair. However Grand Supreme Kai decides that they should allow the pair to flee in order to lead them to Babidi's spaceship. Eventually they reach Babidi's spaceship and find the pair talking to Pui Pui.
Goku asks Grand Supreme Kai if Pui Pui is Babidi only for him to inform Goku that Pui Pui is another one of Babidi's servants. Pui Pui orders Spopovich and Yamu to make up for their earlier failure by defeating their enemies. However they are defeated forcing Pui Pui to summon Babidi's Minions. However they manage to defeat the henchmen. Babidi orders Pui Pui to kill them but he too is defeated. Babidi summons Yakon who is also defeated forcing Dabura to face then. Grand Supreme Kai is shocked that Babidi managed to enslave Dabura, while Future Trunks realizes he's the King that Shula is searching for. They manage to defeat Dabura forcing Babidi and Dabura to team up. However Grand Supreme Kai's plan to kill Babidi fails and enough Genki is harvested to revive Kid Buu.
Gohan and Dabura are underwhelmed by Kid Buu's short stature. Dabura asks Babidi if the creature is the legendary Majin Buu though he notes the only one who can confirm this is Grand Supreme Kai. Grand Supreme Kai confirms Kid Buu is indeed the legendary Majin Buu. After fighting with Kid Buu, Piccolo asks Goku if he can kill Kid Buu and Goku thinks he can manage. Future Trunks asks his partner and Grand Supreme Kai if they will be able to defeat Kid Buu. Grand Supreme Kai suggests they can but reminds them not to underestimate him. Suddenly Kid Buu attacks and absorbs Grand Supreme Kai transforming into Innocent Buu though without South Supreme Kai's power.
- Manga and Anime
At the peak of his power 10 million years ago, Grand Supreme Kai was able to compete against the dark wizard Moro. However, even with South Supreme Kai's aid, the Supreme Kais still had a noticeable disadvantage. It was not until Grand Supreme Kai sacrificed most of his godly power that he was able to seal away Moro's magic power and subdue him. This significantly weakened his abilities.
5 million years ago, he was weaker than the South Supreme Kai, but still seemingly stronger than the other Supreme Kais. He is stated to be much stronger than Shin and strong enough to defeat pre-training Frieza with a single blow. While ultimately absorbed by Huge Buu, in the anime flashback, this was prompted by the Majin after Grand Supreme Kai launched an attack that cut the foe into several pieces, an attack that Shin noted would have surely killed anyone else.
Eons later, it was shown that Grand Supreme Kai's godly power inherited by Good Buu made the Majin immune to Moro's magic. However, once Moro had his magic fully stored and had absorbed a great deal of Namek's energy as well as one of the Grand Supreme Kai's attacks, the Grand Supreme Kai was shown to be at a disadvantage due to lacking the godly power he once had, since almost all of it had been transferred to Kid Buu.
- Flight – The ability to fly through the use of ki.
- Ki Blast – The most basic form of energy wave. Used in Dragon Ball Heroes.
- Kai Kai Matoru - Grand Supreme Kai uses his godly power to create a beam, allowing him to seal up an opponent's magic power.
- Flame Shower Breath – First, the user inhales a large amount of air and strongly exhales it, creating a huge gust of wind similar to a hurricane that can level a city. Named Daikaiōshin Retsuzan (大界王神烈斬,Daikaiōshin Retsuzan) in Dragon Ball Heroes.
- Grand Supreme Divide - A variation of Flame Shower Breath used by Grand Supreme Kai against Huge Buu which cuts the opponent into squares that then explode. Named in Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle where it appears as Grand Supreme Kai's Super Attack.
- Energy Shield – A technique used to generate an energy shield around the user to protect them from attacks.
- Kai Kai - The ability to teleport anywhere in existence. Unlike with Instant Transmission, this technique does not require one to lock onto an energy signal.
- Destructive Grenade - Used by the Grand Supreme Kai upon manifesting from Good Buu.
- Innocent Buu/Good Buu

By being absorbed by Kid Buu, Grand Supreme Kai became the more dominant aspect of Innocent Buu and later Good Buu. Much later, thanks to the Galactic Patrol, Good Buu regained his memories of his time as Grand Supreme Kai and became capable of fully transforming into him. However, while the Grand Supreme Kai's persona exists as part of Good Buu, he does not retain his full godly power.
In Dokkan Battle, Grand Supreme Kai is absorbed by Kid Buu after being freed from the Sealed Ball by Babidi in the present due to history being altered by a dimensional distortion. Due to the absence of South Supreme Kai, Kid Buu's absorption of Grand Supreme Kai results in the birth of a slightly weaker Innocent Buu as only Grand Supreme Kai was absorbed.
- Super Buu
Main articles: Evil Buu, Super Buu, and Kid Buu After Good Buu is absorbed by Evil Buu, Evil Buu became the dominant aspect of Super Buu with Grand Supreme Kai goodness being suppressed. Dragon Ball: How Strong Is Grand Kai, Really?
The Dragon Ball franchise is home to all sorts of powerful beings. From the Saiyans to the Namekians to the godly Kais, there are plenty of powerful opponents to choose from for anyone itching for a fight. Yet some characters out there are implied to be powerful, but have had very few opportunities to show it. A prime example of this is the Grand Kai.
In Dragon Ball, the Kais are gods assigned to watch over a certain quadrant of the universe. For example, the classic King Kai is specifically the North Kai. Sitting above the four quadrants' Kais, however, is the Grand Kai. He doesn't watch over any particular part of the universe, but ensures the other Kais are doing their jobs properly and provides advice when necessary. But if Grand Kai watches over those who protect the universe, then he has to be pretty strong, right?
RELATED: Dragon Ball: Every Goku Death, Ranked
Unfortunately the Grand Kai has never really had a chance to shine, due to -- by his own admission -- neglecting his own training. He even bent the rules of a tournament he hosted so he wouldn't have to make good on his promise to train Goku. While he's never been shown actually fighting, it's implied he's weaker than Goku in his Super Saiyan form.
While that might sound pretty underwhelming for someone who's supposed to be a god watching over other gods, there are still hidden bits of info that imply the Grand Kai is stronger than he lets on.
While the Grand Kai doesn't have much to show in the way of actual fighting, he's given glimpses of his power before. At one point, Goku and the East Kai decide to race each other, and though he wasn't a part of the competition, the Grand Kai decides to join in for the fun of it. Despite Goku and the East Kai both having a head start, the Grand Kai races ahead of them with absolutely no issue, reaching the finish line long before the other two even come close.
RELATED: Does Dragon Ball Work Better as a Prequel to Dragon Ball Z?
On the opposite side of the coin, the Grand Kai had trouble keeping up with Goku and Pikkon during their fight at the Other World Tournament finale. He weaseled his way out of training them because he wasn't confident he could teach them anything that would make them more powerful than they already were.
Despite this, the Grand Kai didn't immediately assume he was outmatched. Rather, he assumed that while Goku was more powerful than him now, he could reach the Super Saiyan's power level by taking his training seriously for once. Whether or not he actually followed through on that idea is yet to be seen.
The Grand Kai is definitely more powerful than the Kais who serve under him. Whether he's more powerful than the Supreme Kais, or any other fighter capable of going toe to toe with them, is up for heavy debate. One thing's for sure, though -- while he may not look the part, the Grand Kai is still definitely not someone you want to mess with.
