The 3 Best Brother Printers of 2021 Reviews

The best Brother laser printer for black and white printing that we've tested is the Brother HL-L2370DW. It's a simple, easy-to-use printer-only unit that feels very well-built and gives easy access to the toner cartridge and potential paper jams. It yields a superb number of black pages before the toner needs refilling, and the cost-per-print is remarkably low. Also, the printing speed for black text documents is incredible. Although it doesn't support Bluetooth, the connectivity options are great, like an Ethernet port, Wi-Fi, Apple AirPrint, and Mopria Print Service. The Brother iPrint&Scan companion app is fantastic and lets you print all the most common printable file types, check the toner level, and order new toner online.

Unfortunately, because it lacks a scanner, you won't be able to digitize old photos or scan and fax reports, so if you need to scan and want a printer with similar performance, check out the Brother MFC-L2750DW. Being a monochrome laser printer, it's terrible for printing photos, and you can't print on glossy photo paper. Also, because the drum unit is separate from the toner, it costs extra to replace it. That said, it's amazing for black-and-white printing, and it's also among the best laser printers we've tested.

Brother makes a variety of printers and multifunction devices. There is a strong commitment to Linux support, but the driver packages are offered only in .rpm or .deb format. So what does a Slackware user do?

This example describes the installation of a Brother MFC-J825DW in 64-bit Slackware for printing and scanning.

Prerequisites

Visit the Brother Linux Driver Homepage https://support.brother.com and download the appropriate drivers in .rpm format. For this device the LPR driver, the cupswrapper driver and the brscan 64bit scanner driver are required. While there, read the install instructions for both the printer driver and the scanner driver. There is a lot there that is irrelevant to Slackware, but also some important information.

Brother printer drivers are 32-bit only (implied by Pre-required Procedure (5) on the Before the Installation page) so for 64-bit Slackware you will need to install at least the multilib glibc-solibs package. Newer models may also require the multilib gcc-g++ package. These packages are available from https://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/people/alien/multilib/ and https://slackware.uk/people/alien/multilib/

You will need to be logged in as root in a terminal window for the following

Package preparation

Convert the original Brother .rpm files to Slackware .txz packages using rpm2txz with the following options.

-c ensures correct file permissions

-S extracts the install scripts in the rpm (as rpm2txz says “USE WITH CAUTION!”)

-n gives a name to the package in standard Slackware format

-d makes a slack-desc from the metadata in the rpm

rpm2txz -c -S -n -d mfcj825dwlpr-3.0.0-1.i386.rpm rpm2txz -c -S -n -d mfcj825dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386.rpm rpm2txz -c -S -n -d brscan4-0.4.1-3.x86_64.rpm

If errors about db4 occur when executing the above commands, remove the contents of /var/lib/rpm. This is unlikely to be a problem on a freshly installed system.

Reviewing and updating the converted packages

Heeding the warning from rpm2txz about using the -S option, review the install/doinst.sh scripts in the converted packages. This is easy to do by opening the package with ark from a filemanager.

In this case only the doinst.sh script for the brscan4 package was altered the to avoid creating symlinks in /usr/lib in 64-bit Slackware.

mkdir temp cd temp explodepkg ../brscan4-0.4.1-x86_64-3.txz nano install/doinst.sh makepkg -l y -c y ../brscan4-0.4.1-x86_64-3.txz

Create a symlink

ln -s /etc/rc.d/rc.cups /etc/init.d/cups

This allows the Brother install scripts to stop and start the CUPS daemon

Install the converted packages

installpkg mfcj825dwlpr-3.0.0-i386-1.txz installpkg mfcj825dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-i386-1.txz installpkg brscan4-0.4.1-x86_64-3.txz

Complete the installation

Follow the instructions from Brother to complete the installation.

Open a web browser and go to http://localhost:631 to configure the printer in CUPS.

Run a command like

brsaneconfig4 -a name=SCANNER model=MFC-J825DW ip=10.1.1.5

to configure the scanner.

It has been reported that some Brother devices with scanning capability have the default scanning mode set to “24bit Color[Fast]” and that this mode is not compatible with Linux. Set your scanning software (e.g. xsane) to use “24bit Color” as the default scanning mode.

Ratings and Reviews

Too Basic

This review is for the Brother iPrint&Scan 8.0 scanning utility which I’m using with a newly purchased Brother HL-L2395DW scanner/printer.
I’m using it on an iMac over a wifi connection and it does work, but the lack of anything but the most basic scanning features is pretty disappointing.

The most egregious of these misses is the inability to run a quick preview scan and then specify the scanning area with a bounding box before hitting the final Scan button. If you’re scanning anything other than a standard-size page, you will need to scan at the largest page size (8.5x11) and then crop what you want using another application, such as Apple’s built-in Preview app. This means it will take extra time to scan and extra time to edit the result. Even the 20-year-old Epson this printer replaced provided a preview/crop feature, as has every other scanning software I’ve ever used in the past 30 years.
If you’re only ever scanning documents it’s serviceable, but anything else such as an odd sized photo or drawing, it’s a drag.

Oh brother...

This Brother iPrint & Scan app (version 8.0.0) is terrible. Firstly, it sometimes connects to my brand new Brother printer, MFC-L5850DW via network and other times disconnects itslelf. It's a very buggy app via network connection. However with USB, it doesn't. So the wireless feature is useless. Secondly, you can't precrop a scanned image like any other scanning app where you first see the scan and then crop what you desirably want. That means if you have anything that is not in Letter size, you'll have to crop manually. What a time waster, honestly. Thirdly, the colors of the scan with this app is not true to the image. Seriously, I tested under various setting and the color was never right. For mac users, just stick to the scanning utility in your default printing settings. You'll save the time AND the headache. Please update the app to support reliable network connection, cropping feature, and better color correction.

Fall Down Simple to Use

I have been using a Samsung for the past 8 years and have been very satisfied with it. But it is harder to maintain than this one was to set up. And, it never worked printing from WIFI or my iPhone, though it claimed to. Maybe it was just not ready for prime time. This one is. The daughter wanted the old home office printer to take to work. I bought this one to replace it. It is a Brother HL-3290CDW. I set it up in the kitchen, it acquired the WIFI. I prepared the ink, very easily. Moved it to the office to connected the USB cable. Finished the setup and found I could print from anywhere in the house via the WIFI, with smart phones, iPhones, tablets, and notebook computers. Not a single problem. I would have given it five stars, but I have not tried the OCR feature yet, nor read the manual. I had one surprise, it printed double-sided and very fast. This a very good simple all in one printer, copier and more.
