Biography[]

Birth And Invasion of Japan[]

Kallen Stadtfeld-Kozuki was born on March 29th, 2000 a.t.b. to a Britannian nobleman, Fredrick Stadtfeld and a Japanese woman, Yuki Kozuki. She is the younger sister of Naoto Kozuki. With her father always busy with his work, Kallen basically spend most of her time with her mother and brother, going on trips and stuff. But all that change when on August 10, 2010 a.t.b. when the Britannian Empire conquer Japan and renamed it Area 11 and the Japanese were called Elevens.

With the invasion, everything Kallen knew and loved has changed for the worse. Her own mother was reduced to a house maid, her father married a spiteful woman who brings men to her bed when her father wasn't home and her brother started a rebellion group. Kallen herself had to bear her father's family name as she was declared his heir since his wife can't produce children. She hated the Britannians for everything they did to her and her family and vowed to take avenge for the counrty she holds dear to her heart.

Ace of the Black Knights[]

After the death of her brother and learning that her mother been using refrain, Kallen joined the Black Knight as a masked man named Zero became the leader of the group. Kallen became one of Zero's most loyal soldiers and is appointed to be his bodyguard, but ironically through little of Lelouch. After Lelouch's identity is revealed she is heartbroken and abandons him. Later on, Kallen starts off refusing to recognize Lelouch as Zero and only addressing his as "Zero". Though, as the series progresses and she learns more about him. She only calls him Zero when in front of those who don't know his identity.

After the discovery of Zero's true idenity to the Black Knights as Kallen tries to protect him, she asked him what does she mean to him, but only got an answer of being used as a pawn. As she turn away to let Lelouch be excuted, she heard him whisper, "Kallen, you must live.". Kallen never got the chance to ask him what he mean by that.

With his disappearance, Kallen been taking care of C.C. hiding her from the Black Knights in case they want to kill her for her assoicating with Lelouch. Things don't look good for the Black Knights as a video leaked of them killing Zero and with that the world cast them as villians and traitors. Before the month ends, Japan and the rest of the world was controlled by F.L.E.J.I.A.

Five Years Later[]

After the betrayal of the Black Knights and falling in disgrace with the world, Kallen, now 22, live in hiding with her comardes. While walking down the street, she bump into Lelouch who she hasn't in five years, though the reunion is quite cold as Lelouch harbors anger towards her friends.

She really hoped that Lelouch would come back as Zero as she was saved from being raped by a masked person whom she assume might be Lelouch. Afterwards, she was saved again when Britannian forces were about to shot a group of defenseless Japanese by the masked man who introduce himself as Zero.

Kallen, along with the Black Knights pondered on whether or not to join Zero and regain back Japan. A few days later, Kallen went to Ashford Academy looking at old photos at the Student Council room where she meets Lelouch once again and it was there they had a moment when Kallen asked him what she means to him, but before Lelouch could answer, Kallen's phone rang with Ohgi on the other line asking her if she asked Lelouch to come back as Zero. Lelouch was reluctant at first but after Kallen's heartfelt reasurance, Lelouch decide to go through it but he first want to meet the Black Knight in private at midnight.

Kallen and the rest of the Black Knights met Lelouch and discuss on how to reclaim Japan and defeat Britannia. After Lelouch's speech, Kallen thought about what would happened after they defeat Britannia and wondering if Lelouch would stay to ensure world peace or would he go back to Z's world.

The Battle Against Britannia[]

During a battle against the Britannians, Kallen was captured along with Lelouch and was taken to the Knight of One, Suzaku Kururugi and taken to a prison cell. She was later busted out by Lelouch and they made their escape, but not before Kallen was severly wound from a gunshot by Suzaku and would have died if C.C. and the others haven't came.

While recovering, Kallen admited her feelings to Lelouch, but Lelouch decided to keep themselves at a distance and should only be together as commander and suboridate, which Kallen reluctantly agreed. When Lelouch revealed himself to the world, Kallen was in shock but stood by his side as he declared an all-out war against Britannia.

Abilites[]

KMF Piloting Skills[]

Kallen is easily one of the most gifted and deadliest Knightmare Fame pilots in the world. It's unknown exactly when, but Kallen has been a fan/geek when it comes to KMFs at a young age. This developed into a love for the models in the machines, and when her brother's insurgent group got their hands on a black market Glasgow. It was given to Kallen to pilot. Even with little experience or practice, Kallen proved to be a skilled fighter in what was at the time an obsolete model. She was later given a more modern Burai, but that was too damaged after a battle to be used. Kallen's true skills as a KMF pilot were revealed when he was given the Guren Mk-II, the first Japanese KMF. She poured herself into learning everything about this Frame and was often seen reading the manual and even worked hard in the combat simulator. He skills with this Guren were high enough to fight on an equal footing with Suzaku's Lancelot, that had been recently upgraded with a float system.

Her diligent study would pay off after the Guren was upgraded in mid battle to the Guren Flight-Enabled, but her true prowess in war was shown after she reclaimed the upgraded Guren S.E.I.T.E.N. the most powerful KMF in history. With this Frame, she was able to best several of the Britannian's elite Knights of the Rounds. Suzaku was only able to survive in battle against Kallen do to his Live Geass suggestion.

Other Skills and Equipment[]

Hand-to-Hand Combat[]

Kallen is a skilled fighter in hand to hand combat. It's unknown who she was trained by, but she has incredible agility and strength for her small stature. Single-handedly, Kallen took out both the Black King and his two armed guards.

Kallen also uses a custom pouch that she has a retractable knife hidden inside. She keeps this on her at all times, and she's willing to use it to keep her secret identity.

KMF Mechanic[]

Kallen's skills with KMFs are not limited to being a pilots. She has also able to conduct regular maintenance and repairs. She's an example of a pilots who takes a hands on approach to the machine she uses. After the Guren Mk-II's radiation arm was damaged, she was able to aquired and attach another radiation arm.

Gun Skills[]

It was most likely during Kallen's time in her brother's small insurgent group that she learned how to use and properly maintain firearms.

Intellect[]

Kallen is often mistaken as an aggressive brute due to her skills in combat. In fact, Kallen has a sharp mind and was able to keep some of the highest grades in her class despite frequent absences.

Relationships[]

Lelouch vi Britannia[]

Her relationship with Lelouch becomes one of the main focuses in her character development. While in the beginning Kallen dislikes Lelouch due to his arrogant attitude and possibly due to the fact that the Student Council thinks they're dating. As for his alter-ego Zero, Kallen hold a strong admiration to Zero due to his leadership and his beliefs in justice. After it is revealed to her that Lelouch and Zero are the same person she is left with the idea that he was using both the Japanese and her through Suzaku's words, in time however she learns that Lelouch's true intentions are noble and thus slowly develop feelings for him. Her loyalty towards Lelouch has been tested throughout the series as such when she was willing to die with him instead of living and betraying him.

Five years later, Kallen still maintain her feelings for him even though he's been rough around her. She feels determined that he is the only one who can bring the world in a peaceful state as her faith in him never wavered. They have a heartfelt moment together at their old school when they were interrupted.

When they were capture and brought to Suzaku, Lelouch lashed out to Suzaku saying that he's taken everything precious that belong to him which shocked Kallen, wondering if he's talking about her. They tried to escape but Kallen was wound by Suzaku, making all the memories of those who died in front of him by gunshot wounds (his mother, his half-sister Euphemia and Shirley) coming into his mind, making Lelouch decide that he and Kallen should be nothing more than commander and suboriate, breaking her heart. Even though he tells her this, there has been moments when they still talking to each other or steal glances.

C.C.[]

Her relationship with C.C. was basically a rival between the two as Kallen saw C.C. as Lelouch/Zero's "mistress" even though that was never true but C.C. loved to tease her about it. During the year after the failed Black Rebellion, Kallen and C.C. have gotten close. When C.C. lost her memories and Lelouch had disappeared for five years, Kallen looked after her and protected her from the Black Knights. When Lelouch returned and her memories was restored, their relationship were still basically the same.

Suzaku Kururugi[]

Kallen's relationship with Suzaku was atagonist. She has a deep hatred for him; for betraying the Japanese by siding with Britannia and for being a problem for the Black Knight especially Lelouch/Zero. They've battle each other but since both of them are ace pilot from different side, it usually becomes a draw. Their relationship doesn't get any better when he nearly killed her by shot her in the back in front of Lelouch.

Black Knights[]

Kallen's relationship with the Black Knights have been strong long before they were ever formed as they were once a small resistance group who opposed Britannia's rule against the Japanese. With the word of Zero, they became a powerful organization that protect the weak. Some of the members had their doubts about Zero, but it usually put aside when Kallen convice them otherwise due to her fierce loyalty to him. Their relationship sort of became strained after the Black Knights betrayed Zero and when they found out that Kallen knew his true idenity for a year. After Lelouch's returned from Z's world and rallying them up again, their relationship have been starting to go back to what it was once before.

Kallen Kōzuki (紅月カレン Kōzuki Karen) is a main character featured in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. She is officially known as Kallen Stadtfeld (カレン・シュタットフェルト Karen Shutattoferuto), and goes by this name at school, but prefers her mother's maiden Japanese name during her revolutionary activities.

Appearance & Personality[]

Kallen's most distinguishing feature is her bright red hair and blue eyes. In school she would have her hair combed down with her school uniform, but when fighting or in her own privacy, she would have her hair spiked up. When she is fighting in her original Knightmare, an outdated Glasgow, she wears a vest-shorts combination. Once she begins to pilot the Guren Mark II, she wears a magenta suit that zips up to her neck. Other times, she is seen wearing her Black Knights uniform.

Kallen has shown to have a rebellious personality as she is strong-willed, short tempered, impulsive, forceful and quite feisty. Despite her tough attitude Kallen is actually quite sensitive and gentle, however after the death of her brother she doesn't show this side much any more. Her brother's death has also affected her relationship with her father and mother, over time however she begins to renew her relationship with her mother and like her brother she becomes one of Kallen's reasons to liberate Japan; her relationship with her father, both before and after Britannia took over Japan, is never revealed, though she has referred to him as "dad" on one occasion, implying that their relationship is (or at least was) probably positive.

At Ashford Academy, Kallen is forced to hide her identity; to avoid suspicion, she puts on some makeup, changes her hairstyle, and her personality as well. Whereas normally Kallen is powerful, confident, willful, and Japanese-favoring, at school she is a milquetoast, withdrawn ill girl who doesn't speak up very much (the ill part is to hide her recreational activites as a Black Knight). In spite of this, she is welcomed fondly into the Student Council, which becomes a significant factor in her character development.

While being both Japanese and Britannian, Kallen has the ability to live a normal life; however, she refuses to fully accept her Britannian side as it would mean abandoning her Japanese friends, people, and self; thus making her one of the few selfless characters in the series. On multiple occasions she has claimed that she hates Britannians, though that is clearly an exaggeration, as she has been seen caring about Britannian civilians on multiple occasions, a prime example being her visible concern for the Student Council during the Lake Kawaguchi incident.

In battle, Kallen is aggressive (this could be due to the fact that her weapons are mainly-close range), often ruthless, and opportunistic; her code name, Q-1, is arguably a shortened version of the "Queen" on a chessboard, the strongest piece in a chess game. She is very confident in her abilities and her Knightmare piloting capabilities, and rightly so - her Guren arguably annihilated most of Cornelia's forces during the Battle of Narita. However, despite being one of the very best pilots in the series, if not the very best, she is not indestructible; as shown by her eventual capture in R2.

Kallen's character arc can be summarized as thus: she transforms from an emotional, somewhat hypocritical (she is racist to the Britannians but despises them for their own racism), untrusting girl in a tawdry rebellion into an intellectual, confident, capable fighter with a strong sense of justice and morality, willing to put aside her feelings and interests to protect those she loves.

Abilities[]

Kallen is a skilled Knightmare Frame pilot, rivaling the abilities of even the Knights of Rounds. She is acknowledged as the ace pilot of the Black Knights by enemies and allies alike. Her codename, "Q-1," references, in algebraic Chess notation, the Queen piece, the most powerful piece in chess. In Lelouch's assessment of the core members of the Black Knights, her "Combat Ability" score is 100 out of 100, matching that of Kyoshiro Tohdoh; she also has the highest Loyalty with a 100 of a 100. With the radiation arm of her Guren Mk-II, Kallen can take down almost any Knightmare Frame in a single attack should they allow her to make physical contact, and later models also have numerous secondary attack modes for mid- and long-range combat. Her Knightmare Frame is also incredibly fast, allowing her to fight on the same level as some of the most advanced Knightmare Frames in the series. It should also be noted that she was able to fight Suzaku on the same level even with his "live on" command activated. Outside of a Knightmare, Kallen displays superior fighting abilities, is highly resourceful, and she is apparently knowledgeable since her grades in school are top of the class despite frequent absences.

Code Geass: Ten Facts About Kallen Kozuki

Kallen is one of the most important characters in the Code Geass series. She is the start fighter for the Black Knights and is present throughout the entity of the series. Kallen is a serious character who shows very little of her sensitive side throughout the show. She attends school with Lelouche and is the same age, but tends to miss most days due to her involvement with the Black Knights. In order to keep her double life a secret, she pretends to be sickly to her teachers and classmates. She is also half Japanese and half Britinian, although she rejects her non-Japanese heritage.

10 She Has Her Own Light Novel

While it will likely never make it's way outside of Japan, Kallen does have her own light novel. Translators have stated that the light novel focuses on the fact that Kallen has to live a double life and takes a closer look at the struggles of her involvement with the Black Knights.

The novel only consists of two short chapters. Kallen is also featured in the fan book Queen that focuses on the female characters of the series, although it doesn't add much substance to the overall plot.

9 She Loves Plushies

A small detail that many fans don't know about Kallen is that she actually seems to be rather fond of stuffed animals. Despite the fact that she is used to war, many fans forget that Kallen was just a normal school girl at one point.

Kallen actually has a stuffed animal in her room that she has even named Tabatacchi. This small element helps to show Kallen in a softer light than when she is piloting or having to carry out missions for Zero.

8 Tragic Family

Kallen was born out of an affair between a Britannian man and her mother. Once the war began, her mom asked for her dad to adopt her since his actual wife was sterile, and he needed a heir for his estate.

RELATED: Code Geass: The Anime's 10 Most Hated Characters, Ranked

Kallen now lives with her dad and her stepmom. Kallen's mom refused to never see her daughter again and took up a job as a maid where she is regularly abused by the stepmom and has even been abused by Kallen in the past.

7 She is Incredibly Loyal

Lelouchevaluated the members of the Black Knights on several different subjects to determine where they would be most useful. Kallen was one of the members he evaluated and surprisingly placed her loyalty to the cause at 100 out of 100.

Lelouche notes that Kallen has unwavering loyalty and would rather die than turn her back on her comrades or her beliefs. This can be seen throughout the series as Kallen is more than ready to die in several harsh battles.

6 She Makes High Grades

While Kallen is absent from schools for a good portion of the year, she is shown to have above-average intelligence. She is one of the top performers at Ashford Academy and has no problem coming back to school and acing her classes.

During her time with the Black Knights, Kallen is shown to be able to make and work with new strategies on the fly and even has some diplomatic abilities. Kallen may not be on the same level as Lelouche, but she is one of the brightest characters in the series.

5 She Is Extremely Aggressive

One thing that many fans notice about Kallen is that she is extremely aggressive in her fights. Kallen gets up close and personal with her opponents and shows little to no mercy no matter who the opponent in front of her is.

RELATED: Code Geass: 5 Anime Heroes Lelouch Lamperouge Could Easily Outsmart (& 5 He Couldn't)

This can also be seen in the scene where she pulls a knife on Lelouch while she is in the shower. Kallen has no problem killing to protect her identity and is more than willing to even get rid of her classmate if the need arises.

4 Kallen Was Inspired by Her Brother

Kallen's brother Naoto was one of the members of the rebellion and lost his life while fighting for his country. Kallen was close to her brother and looked up to him, with his death coming as a shock to her being one of the main motivations for her hate towards Britannia.

Kallen doesn't develop close relationships with anyone other than Lelouche and her brother. This may be due to the fact that those she has gotten close with have ended up being killed in the line of duty.

3 She Becomes a Normal Student

After Zero kills, Lelouche Kallen quits her work as a member of the Black Knights and actually returns to school. Kallen is able to act like her true self and stops acting as if she is sick all the time now that she can attend classes regularly.

Kallen does return to the battlefield once more in the sequel movie, where she is overjoyed to find Lelouche alive. It is shown that none of her abilities have deteriorated during the time she lived a normal life.

2 Her Nickname Means Queen

Lelouch gives every member of his force a nickname to use when they are all on the battlefield. Kallen gets the nickname Q-1 which means queen as Lelouch sees her as one of the most important pieces on his board.

Kallen is easily the most skilled member of the Black Knights and is one of the few reasons Lelouch is able to succeed in his plans. Kallen is the character that actually helps them turn the tide of the war.

1 She Loves Lelouch

While Kallen does kiss Lelouch in the show and comes on to him several times, the drama CD with her poem in it actually reveals just how in love she is with him. If Lelouche hadn't rejected her and taken his reign as an evil king, Kallen would have died for him.

Lelouch seems to have feelings for her as well, as he doesn't want her burdened by being in love with someone who will ultimately be sacrificed. It is unknown if Kallen ever moved on from her feelings for him.

Kallen Kōzuki(紅月カレン, Kōdzuki Karen) is a main character featured in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. She is officially known as Kallen Stadtfeld(カレン・シュタットフェルト, Karen Shutattoferuto), and goes by this name at school, but prefers her mother's maiden name during her revolutionary activities. Ami Koshimizu won "Best Actress in supporting role" for her role as Kallen at the first Seiyu Awards in 2007. Kallen was awarded 8th place in the 29th Anime Grand Prix, then 17th and 16th, respectively, in the following two.

Appearance

Kallen is a young girl with curly red hair, and blue eyes, she wearing a red suit.

Personality

Kallen has shown to have a rebellious personality as she is strong-willed, short tempered, impulsive, forceful and quite feisty. Despite her tough attitude Kallen is actually quite sensitive and gentle, however after the death of her brother she doesn't show this side much any more. Lelouch and Kallen.png

After it is revealed to her that Lelouch and Zero are the same person she is left with the idea that he was using both the Japanese and her through Suzaku's words. In time however, she learns that Lelouch's true intentions are noble and thus she slowly develops feelings for him. Her loyalty towards Lelouch has been tested throughout the series as such when she was willing to die with him instead of living and betray

ing him, as well as when she still retained her feelings for him even after he became an enemy of the world but opposed him because of the injustice he was causing and was shown how hesitant she was when she was trying to kill him. It is possible that after Lelouch's victory over the Black Knights, she hated him. After finding out his plans, however, Kallen was the only other person besides C.C., Nunnally, and Suzaku to shed tears for Lelouch and chose to remember him not as the enemy of the world but as the man she loved.

Character Outline

Kallen is a young Britannian-Japanese girl, who believes herself to be a Japanese person at heart and prefers to be known by her Japanese mother's maiden name. Her father is Britannian and her mother is an Eleven; her father comes from a prestigious Britannian family, which Kallen benefits from. She attends the Ashford Academy, where she is a member of its student council and is one of its most outstanding students. Her brother, Naoto Kōzuki (紅月ナオト, Kōzuki Naoto), with whom she had a deep connection, was a former leader of the resistance organization before his death.

Both Kallen's step-mother, a Britannian, live with her and the girl's biological mother in the same house, but her mother is employed as a maid and is often mistreated by both her step-mother and Kallen herself. After her mother is injured and later imprisoned for falling prey to the Refrain drug (which lets people think they're reliving the past), Kallen changes her views and decides to fight against the Britannian Empire not only for her brother, but to fulfill her new wish for a world in which she can live happily with her mother.

This aspect of her character contrasts the frail-girl image she uses as a public front. Kallen leads a double life as a normal Britannian student and as a member of a guerrilla resistance group against Britannia, which is later reformed into the Order of the Black Knights by Lelouch Lamperouge. In episode 3 it is revealed that she skips school regularly as a result of participating in terrorist activities and with an excuse of poor health. When she is in school, Kallen portrays herself as a weak-bodied high school student who obeys all of the formalities. However, her personality changes in to a very strong-willed and forceful one when she acts as a resistance fighter. When she feels under suspicion she often readies the knife that she conceals in a small pink pouch, showing what she will do to keep her identity secret.

As a running gag, Kallen ends up naked or immodestly dressed in front of other people on numerous occasions. Lelouch sees her naked after she pulls back a shower curtain in surprise in the third episode, Suzaku sees her bathing under a waterfall when they are stranded on Kaminejima Island, she is forced to dress as a Playboy Bunny at the start of the second season, and she walks in on a meeting between C.C. and the Chinese ambassadors wearing only a towel when attempting to complain about the previous situation to C.C. Another possible running gag is her relationship with Lelouch as they are set up in scenes where they almost kiss but always get interrupted.

In an interview reported by the anime magazine Newtype USA, Seiyu Ami Koshimizu talked about the difficulty of voicing Kallen because of the double life that her character had. Certain aspects of Kallen's character such as her girlish naivete and competitiveness made it easy for the voice actress to relate, even to the point of admitting that in some ways they act very much the same.

Character History

First Season

Kallen appears early in the first episode, driving a truck with C.C.'s capsule, and attempts to fight off Jeremiah's Purist Faction using a Glasgow. After Lelouch gains possession of his Geass from C.C., he takes possession of an enemy Sutherland and helps Kallen to escape the other Knightmare Frames chasing her. He further directs the remaining resistance forces, granting them a decisive advantage until Suzaku Kururugi uses his Lancelot to disable their Knightmares. She sacrifices her own Knightmare in return for helping her earlier against Jeremiah to allow Lelouch to escape, despite not knowing who he really is. She is able to escape after ejecting, meeting up with Ohgi and the rest of the resistance. However, the Britannian Military found where they were hiding. When the commander was just about to issue the order to fire, the Viceroy, Clovis la Britannia orders a ceasefire saving Kallen and the others.

After this incident, Kallen returns back to school for the time being. She returns back to class with a fake persona of a frail girl. After Lelouch discovers that Kallen, one of the terrorists he helped in Shinjuku Ghetto, attends the same school, he attempts to confirm his suspicions. Lelouch's unfamiliarity with his Geass however, causes him to reveal knowledge of the Shinjiku incident to Kallen, leading her to suspect him of being their unknown benefactor. As they both plan on exposing the other's suspicions, the Student Council throws a party for Kallen. During their explanation as to why, allows Rivalz to propose a toast. Shirley stating that they are too young for it, causes Rivalz to throw the bottle to Lelouch. With Lelouch having the bottle, Shirley attempts to retrieve it from him. However, the cork pops open spraying all over Kallen. Kallen then takes a shower and uses this situation to her advantage in order to find out if Lelouch really is Zero. Lelouch creates a cunning deception to ease her suspicions of his identity by playing a recorded message of himself on the telephone with the help of a GeassedSayoko, drawing her suspicions off him. When the death of Prince Clovis is announced in the media, it is Suzaku who is accused of the murder.

After receiving the message from Zero, both Kallen and Ohgi decide to help him save Suzaku Kururugi who was falsely accused of murdering Clovis. Both have their doubts as the operation is going, but Zero uses his own strategy and his Geass to turn the situation in his favor resulting in them to believe in Zero.

Arthur, a stray cat, is later chased throughout the school grounds by the entire student body after wandering into the Lamperouge residence and escaping with Lelouch's Zero mask. Milly announced that the one who would catch the cat would get a kiss from any member of the Student Council. Suzaku and Lelouch were the ones that got the cat and got a kiss on the cheek from Nunnally. The Student Council adopts him and builds a cat house in the council room. Following this incident, Kallen along with the rest of the student body watches Prince Clovis' funeral on live. During the funeral, the Emperor of Britannia, makes a speech on the virtues of inequality and the social battle for evolution and betterment.

Following Lelouch's failed attempt at stopping the new viceroy of Area 11, Cornelia li Britannia, the Japan Liberation Front decide to act and in turn kidnapped Britannians in a hotel jacking. Unable to stand by, Zero decides that this event can be the starting point for a new organization. After saving the hostages, Zero uses the media in order to publicly announce the formation of the Black Knights with the core members present.

With the formation of the Black Knights and Zero's increasing number of victories over the Britannian forces, Kallen comes to greatly admire him. Later on, Kallen is seen back at her house and for the first time is shown her step-mother, Mrs. Stadtfeld and as well as Mrs. Kōzuki who has become a maid in order to stay with her daughter. During one of the Black Knights operations to stop the distribution of the drug, Refrain (Drug), Kallen notices her mother as one of the people using it. She attempts to save her using her Glasgow, but a corrupted member of the Britannian police force uses a Knightpolice in order to kill Kallen. Kallen then ensues in a battle with it and eventually defeats him. Afterwards, Kallen realizes the truth surrounding why her mother decided to stay with her all this time and promises her that she will take part in making a world where they can both live in.

After losing her Glasgow, Zero gives Kallen the newly-developed Guren Mk-II to replace it. As Zero decides to attack Cornelia in the Narita Mountains, all members of the Black Knights head to Narita. Kallen starts off the operation using the Guren's Radiant Wave Surger to start a landslide that will decimate the Britannian forces. Afterwards, Kallen effectively starts to destroy the remaining forces including most of the Purist Faction. She easily outmatched Jeremiah and dispatched Kewell with ease as well. She then moves on to her next checkpoint which is to trap Cornelia. She initially has the advantage and overwhelms Cornelia until Zero arrives to talk with Cornelia. As they prepare to capture her, Suzaku appears with the Lancelot in an attempt to save the Viceroy. Zero enraged that the Lancelot is again interfering with his plans orders Kallen to destroy. Kallen engages in a one on one fight with Suzaku having an advantage with the Guren. As they continue fighting, Suzaku is shocked at the power of the Guren, but is unwilling to give up. He fires a shot from his VARIS which in turn Kallen attempts to block with the Radiant Wave Surger. However, the ground beneath her gives away, causing her to fall and damage her Knightmare. Because of this, Zero orders all Black Knights to retreat leaving the JLF to fend for themselves giving much discomfort to Kallen, Ohgi and Tamaki.

Before the Black Knights begin their operation to rescue Tohdoh from his scheduled execution, Rakshata appears to meet Zero and give them the new Knightmare models and suits. Kallen goes along with Zero to retrieve Tohdoh. After reuniting with the Four Holy Swords, Suzaku appears once again with the Lancelot in order to stop them from leaving. During their fight, reinforcements appear causing Tohdoh to issue the command to release the chaff-smoke which Kallen does so and retreats. Now that the Black Knights are growing, Zero announces the chain of command and gives Kallen the position of being captain of the Zero Squad which is Zero's personal force. Hearing that Suzaku is appointed Euphemia's knight, the Black Knights decide on what his fate shall be because of his rising popularity with the Elevens. Diethard decides to take his own course and hints to Kallen to assassinate Suzaku in order to please Zero. She attempts to assassinate him during his party, but is interrupted by Lelouch.

Afterwards, she is seen during the battle at Shikine Island in order to capture Suzaku. The plan goes wrong when Schneizel appears with the Avalon and fires at Zero and Suzaku with the Hadron Cannon. Later, Kallen appears to be alive and is found by Suzaku who arrests her for being a member of the Black Knights. They spent time together discussing about their life as well as Ashford until things became heated talking about their ideals only to be shocked by the truth of Genbu's assassination and that Suzaku is willing to atone for it. The following day, Kallen and Suzaku run into Zero and Euphemia. The floor below them collapses giving Zero and Kallen a chance to escape with the Gawain.

At the end of the first season, Kallen reveals her identity to the students of Ashford Academy when the Black Knights occupy it as their base of operations, convincing the student council that they will not be harmed. When Zero abandons the battle to rescue Nunnally, Kallen follows him. She witnesses his confrontation with Suzaku and learns about his true identity, the truth about the massacre of SAZ, and his Geass power. She was also shocked to hear that Lelouch admitting that he used the Japanese, including her, for his scheme. She flees in shock rather than aiding Lelouch to deal with Suzaku.

Second Season

One year later, Kallen is still part of the Black Knights. Along with C.C., she is one of the first members to know Zero's identity and secret power, having been brought up to speed by C.C. in the interim.

During the operation to kidnap Nunnally vi Britannia as she is being transported to Area 11, Kallen receives an upgrade for the Guren Mk-II, giving it flight capabilities and an upgraded radiation arm. With it she is able to destroy Gilbert G.P. Guilford's Vincent and the remaining two Glaston Knights flanking him, then incapacitate Gino and Anya's Knightmare Frames with a wide-range burst. Her battle with Suzaku is cut short when the airship carrying Nunnally crashes into the sea.

After this incident, Lelouch becomes depressed over Nunnally's involvement, since he can't bring himself to go against her wishes. When he nearly resorts

to taking Refrain, Kallen steps in and talks him out of it. Still somewhat depressed, he tries to kiss her, but despite her feelings for him she backs out at the last moment and slaps him, insisting that he bears the responsibility for realizing the dream he gave the Japanese people. After Lelouch regains his composure and tricks the Britannians into exiling the Black Knights, she asks him why he came back. Instead of answering, he asks her to come back to Ashford Academy with him once their mission is finished, but is interrupted by C.C. before he can explain why. The two grew closer afterwards.

During the Black Knights attempted kidnapping of Empress Tianzi, Kallen is captured by Li Xingke in his Shenhu

'Kallen Kōzuki' (紅月カレン Kōzuki Karen) is one of the tritagonists in the anime/manga series Code Geass. She is officially known as 'Kallen Stadtfeld' (カレン・シュタットフェルト Karen Shutattoferuto), and goes by this name at school, but prefers her mother's maiden Japanese name during her revolutionary (now military) activities.

Kallen is a strong-willed, determined, loyal, and brave individual who can also be quite short-tempered, forceful, and somewhat impulsive. Despite her uncompromising attitude, Kallen is quite sensitive, compassionate, and genuinely gentle.

While being both Japanese and Britannian, Kallen could live everyday life. However, she refused to fully accept her Britannian side as it would mean abandoning her Japanese friends, people, and self, thus making her one of the few selfless characters in all the series. On multiple occasions at the beginning of the series, she had claimed that she hates Britannians. However, that was an exaggeration, as Kallen caring about Britannian civilians on multiple occasions.

At Ashford Academy, Kallen hid her identity to avoid suspicion, which caused her to change her hairstyle and genuine personality. Whereas usually, Kallen is powerful, confident, willful, and Japanese-favoring. At school, she was a milquetoast, withdrawn, ill girl who didn't speak up very much (the sick part was to hide her recreational activities as a Black Knight).

Character Background:

Kallen is a young Britannian-Japanese woman who believes herself to be Japanese at heart and prefers her Japanese mother's name. Her mother is an Eleven who stayed with her children for most of their lives. Her brother, Naoto Kōzuki, was a former leader of a resistance organization before his death. After his death, Kallen became a member of the same guerilla resistance group against Britannia, which would later be reformed into the Order of the Black Knights by Lelouch vi Britannia several years later.

Her father is a Britannian noble who comes from a prestigious family. Since his legal wife, Mrs. Stadtfeld, could not bear any children, Mr. Stadtfeld requested Ms. Kōzuki to adopt Kallen into his household as his heir formally. Since her daughter would benefit from being a Britannian noble, Ms. Kōzuki accepted his request without Kallen's consent, much to her displeasure. Though Stadtfeld's wife ordered her never to see her daughter again, Ms. Kōzuki refused, fighting hard to be hired as a maid in the Stadtfelds' household to remain by her daughter's side, something that Kallen was unaware of at that time.

Both Kallen's stepmother and mother live with her in the same house. Still, her biological mother was often mistreated by both her stepmother, the other maids (who were all pure Britannians), and even Kallen herself after their relationship became strained. However, she would try to discreetly help her mother at times but still stayed away from her.

First Season:

Kallen appears early in the first episode, driving a truck with C.C.'s capsule, and attempts to fight off Jeremiah's Purist Faction using a Glasgow. After Lelouch gains possession of his Geass from C.C., he takes possession of an enemy Sutherland and helps Kallen to escape the other Knightmare Frames chasing her. With the formation of the Black Knights and Zero's increasing number of victories over the Britannian forces, Kallen comes to admire him greatly.

During one of the Black Knights operations to stop the drug distribution, Refrain, Kallen notices her mother as one of the people using it. She attempts to save her using her Glasgow, but a corrupted member of the Britannian police force employs a Knightpolice to kill Kallen. During the battle, Kallen realizes that her mother decided to stay in the Stadtfeld household to be with her and calls herself a fool for not recognizing her mother's love towards her.

After losing her Glasgow, Zero gives Kallen the newly-developed Guren Mk-II to replace it.

Due to the immense growth in Black Knights, Zero announces the chain of command and gives Kallen the position of being captain of the Zero Squad, Zero's force.

After Scheizel's unexpected appearance with the Avalon at the Shikine Island battle, Kallen appears to be alive and found by Suzaku, who arrests her for being a member of the Black Knights. They spent time together discussing their life and Ashford until things became heated talking about their ideas, only to be shocked by the truth of Genbu's assassination and that Suzaku is willing to atone for it. The following day, Kallen and Suzaku run into Zero and Euphemia. The floor below them collapses, giving Zero and Kallen a chance to escape with the Gawain.

At the end of the first season, Kallen reveals her identity to the students of Ashford Academy when the Black Knights occupy it as their base of operations, convincing the student council that Black Knights will not harm them. When Zero abandons the battle to rescue Nunnally, Kallen follows him. She witnesses his confrontation with Suzaku and learns about his true identity, the truth about the massacre of SAZ, and his Geass power. Kallen was also shocked to hear that Lelouch admits that he used the Japanese, including her, for his scheme. She flees in shock rather than aiding Lelouch to deal with Suzaku.

Second Season:

One year later, Kallen is still part of the Black Knights, but due to revealing her identity has had to leave Ashford Academy. Her memory was one of those erased from Lelouch's mind by Charles Zi Britannia, although the other students are still aware of her existence. Along with C.C., she is one of the first members to know Zero's identity and secret power, bringing up to speed by C.C. in the interim.

During the operation to kidnap Nunnally vi Britannia, Kallen was transported to Area 11. Kallen receives an upgrade for the Guren Mk-II, giving it flight capabilities and an upgraded radiation arm.

During the Black Knight's attempted kidnapping of Empress Tianzi, Kallen is captured by Li Xingke in his Shenhu. Lelouch, visibly stunned, swears that he'll rescue her. Touched by Lelouch's words, Kallen calmly waits for him.

After the High Eunuchs turn to Schneizel el Britannia for military support, Kallen is turned over to Suzaku along with the Guren. She is sent back to prison in Area 11 and subsequently transferred into a more comfortable solitary cell by Nunnally. Later on, Suzaku approaches her after Shirley's death, intending to use the drug Refrain to find out if Lelouch has become Zero once again, but cannot bring himself to do it because he refuses to stoop to Lelouch's level. In retaliation, she beats him severely during their next meeting when Suzaku tries to apologize.

During the second battle of Tokyo, Kallen is rescued from captivity and returned to the Guren (complete with a pilot suit brought by Sayoko). Using the new Guren, she decimates the Britannian forces. She then fights Suzaku, easily breaking through his defenses and bringing him to the brink of death. In doing so, however, she activates his Geass command, forcing him to survive by firing the F.L.E.I.J.A. bomb. She dodges it, and the bomb hits the government building, destroying a fair portion of the Tokyo Settlement.

After Kallen returns to the Black Knights and Zero's identity is revealed, she tries to defend him. When the others don't listen, she asks what she means to him, expressing a willingness to die then and there as long as it's with him. Lelouch, thinking that he had lost everyone he held dear to him, refused to have her die with him and lies and calls her a tool, but then whispers that she should live on without him within earshot.

Following Lelouch's escape, Kallen tries to protest how Ohgi and the others have discarded Zero so readily despite all that he has done for them. However, they refuse to listen, still angered at the idea that they merely used as pawns. As the Black Knights move to assist with stopping the rebellion within Emperor Charles' forces, Kallen thinks to herself that Lelouch needs to live, as she cannot move on before getting an answer to her question. When Lelouch is crowned as the Emperor, Kallen and the rest of the Black Knights are visibly stunned.

After Lelouch's declaration that Britannia will join the UFN, Kallen escorts him to the meeting, giving orders to the Black Knights beforehand to gun her down if she appears to be under the influence of Geass. Lelouch gets her to take the long route, giving them the chance to speak in private. Kallen recounts their history, then asks Lelouch what he intends to gain by becoming Emperor, as well as what she means to him. Lelouch remains silent, so she kisses him to show her feelings. When he doesn't react, she bids him farewell. Lelouch does the same once she can no longer hear him.

After the Black Knights side with Schneizel, Gino agrees to fight despite that he would be going against Britannia, telling Kallen that he understands her feelings a little. Kallen is stationed in the front lines. She breaks away from the mainline to try and reach Lelouch but is called back. Kallen breaks into the Avalon and attempts to kill Lelouch, with tears in her eyes as she does so, but is stopped by C.C. Kallen easily defeats C.C. and, with the help of Gino, proceeds to the Damocles for a final confrontation with Suzaku.

After a fierce battle, Kallen manages to land a decisive blow on the Lancelot before losing consciousness. Gino rescues her while the Lancelot explodes. After the war, she is taken along with many others who rebelled against Lelouch to be publicly executed, where she witnesses Lelouch's death by Suzaku disguised as Zero. Understanding Lelouch's plan, she screamed as Lelouch was stabbed. However, she still stated with Tohdoh that Suzaku was "Zero."

Two months after Lelouch's death, Kallen has forgiven him since she understood his plan completely. She narrates the changing world thanks to him. She is living with her mother in a Japanese town who appears to have recovered from refrain addiction. Kallen still attends Ashford Academy since Lelouch wanted her to return there but has thrown away her softcover, signified by her going to school with her proper hairstyle and the Guren's key around her neck while still a member of the Black Knights. She keeps a photo of Lelouch in the center of her picture wall in her room, smiling at it before hurrying to school.

Kallen Stadtfeld

Fictional character from Code Geass

Kallen Stadtfeld (カレン・シュタットフェルト, Karen Shutattoferuto) is a fictional character in the Sunriseanime series Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. In the series, she is legally known by "Kallen Stadtfeld" at school, but prefers her mother's maiden surname, using Kallen Kozuki[1] (紅月カレン, Kōzuki Karen) during her revolutionary activities. Her voice actress Ami Koshimizu won "Best Actress in a Supporting Role" for her role as Kallen at the first Seiyu Awards in 2007.[2] Kallen was awarded 8th place in the 29th Anime Grand Prix,[3] then 17th and 16th, respectively, in the following two.

Character outline[edit]

Frail and meek, this aspect of Kallen's character was used as a public front to mask her true nature as a combatant deeply involved in the resistance.[citation needed]

Kallen Stadtfeld is half Britannian, half Japanese, but believes herself to be a Japanese person at heart and prefers to be known by her mother's maiden name, Kozuki. Her father is Britannian and her mother is an Eleven; her father comes from a prestigious Britannian family, which Kallen benefits from. She attends the Ashford Academy, where she later becomes a member of its student council and is one of its most outstanding students. Her brother, Naoto Kozuki (紅月ナオト, Kōzuki Naoto), with whom she had a deep connection, was a former leader of her resistance cell before his death.

Both Kallen's stepmother, a Britannian, and biological mother live with her in the same house, but her biological mother is employed as a maid and is often mistreated by both her stepmother and Kallen herself. After her biological mother is arrested for using Refrain (a fictional drug which lets people think they're reliving the past), Kallen changes her views and decides to fight against the Britannian Empire not only for her brother, but to fulfill her new wish for a world in which she can live happily with her biological mother.

Kallen leads a double life as a normal Britannian student and as a member of a guerrilla resistance group against Britannia, which is later reformed into the Order of the Black Knights by Lelouch Vi Britannia. In school, she portrays herself as a weak-bodied high school student who obeys all of the formalities, and goes by her Britannian name of Stadtfeld. However, her personality changes into a very strong-willed and forceful one when she acts as a resistance fighter.

As a running gag, Kallen ends up nude or immodestly dressed in front of other people on numerous occasions: Lelouch sees her naked after she accidentally pulls back a shower curtain in the third episode, Suzaku sees her bathing under a waterfall when they are stranded on Kamine Island, she is forced to dress in an immodest bunny costume at the start of the second season (to plant a tracking device on Lelouch), and she walks in on a meeting between C.C. and the Chinese ambassadors wearing only a towel when intending to complain about the previous situation to C.C. (claiming that the operation would've gone faster if C.C. was wearing the outfit).

In an interview reported by the anime magazine Newtype USA, seiyu Ami Koshimizu talked about the difficulty of voicing Kallen because of the double life that her character leads. Certain aspects of Kallen's character such as her girlish naivete and competitiveness made it easy for the voice actress to relate, even to the point of admitting that in some ways they act very much the same.[4]

Character history[edit]

First season[edit]

Kallen appears early in the first episode, driving a truck with C.C.'s capsule, and then providing cover by fighting Jeremiah in a Glasgow. After Lelouch gains his Geass from C.C., he takes control of an enemy Sutherland and helps Kallen to escape the other Knightmare Frames chasing her. He further directs the remaining resistance forces in the battle, granting them a decisive advantage until Suzaku Kururugi uses the Lancelot's superior systems to overwhelm their forces. She sacrifices her own machine to allow Lelouch to escape, despite not knowing who he really is.

After this incident, Lelouch's unfamiliarity with his Geass causes him to reveal knowledge of the Shinjuku incident to Kallen while questioning her about her motivations, leading her to suspect him of being their unknown benefactor. Lelouch disproves these suspicions by being present while she receives a telephone call from Zero, which actually plays a message he recorded. With the formation of the Black Knights and Zero's increasing number of victories over the Britannian forces, Kallen comes to greatly admire him, evident in her ecstatic reaction to her appointment as head of his personal guard. She even tries to assassinate Suzaku Kururugi after learning that he is the pilot of the Lancelot, believing it would benefit Zero's goal. The trust seems to be mutual, as Lelouch offers to reveal his identity to her when he notices her curiosity; she declines, though she shows signs of jealousy that C.C., whom she had first met in the previous episode, appears to know.

Once the Black Knights begin receiving new Knightmares, Zero gives Kallen the newly developed Guren Mk-II. With its powerful radiation-emitting arm and speed matching that of Suzaku's Lancelot, Kallen becomes one of the Black Knights' most talented pilots, often facing off against Suzaku and usually proving an even match for him.

At the end of the first season, Kallen reveals her identity to the students of Ashford Academy when the Black Knights occupy it as their base of operations, convincing the student council that they will not be harmed. Later on, she battles against Suzaku in his flight-equipped Lancelot, suffering a narrow defeat. Lelouch intervenes before Suzaku can deliver the finishing blow. When Lelouch abandons the battle to rescue his sister, Kallen follows him. She witnesses his confrontation with Suzaku and learns about his true identity, the truth about the massacre of SAZ, and his Geass power. She flees in shock rather than helping Lelouch to deal with Suzaku, and goes into hiding. In Oz the Reflection, she briefly helps Orpheus Zevon in battle before rejoining the Black Knights.

Second season (R2)[edit]

One year later, Kallen is still part of the Black Knights. Along with C.C., she is the only member who knows Lelouch's identity and secret power, having been brought up to speed by C.C. in the interim. Kallen confronts Lelouch about whether or not he used Geass to make her loyal to him, and Lelouch insists that her loyalty is her own decision. She seems to accept this, and still supports Zero, even though she prefers to see Lelouch and Zero as separate entities; however, she later starts seeing them as the same person. Over time Kallen grows to love Lelouch, offering to die for him. She also desires to be in his inner circle as C.C. is, so that she won't be left in the dark about his plans; though she won't admit it, C.C. easily sees through the act and playfully teases her about it, with Kallen unaware that Lelouch is slowly returning her feelings.

When he nearly resorts to taking Refrain, Kallen steps in and talks him out of it, promising to do anything he asks her to. He tries to kiss her, requesting her to comfort him as a woman, but despite her feelings for him she backs out at the last moment and slaps him, insisting that he bears the responsibility for realizing the dream he gave the Japanese people. After Lelouch regains his composure and tricks the Britannians into exiling the Black Knights, she shows a great deal of relief knowing that he's feeling better. While she is daydreaming about this, Lelouch snaps her back to reality, causing her to fall on him. As she tries to cherish the moment by asking him why he came back, he counter-asks her if she will return to Ashford with him when Britannia is defeated, only to be interrupted by C.C.

During the Black Knights attempted kidnapping of Empress Tianzi, Kallen is captured by Li Xingke in his Shen Hu, having taken her Guren into battle without replacing its energy filler. After the High Eunuchs turn to Schneizel el Britannia for military support, she is turned over to Suzaku along with the Guren. She is sent back to a prison in Area 11, and subsequently transferred into a more comfortable solitary cell by Nunnally, who also gives her a dress to wear. Suzaku approaches her after Shirley's death, intending to use the Refrain drug to find out if Lelouch has become Zero once again, but cannot bring himself to do it because he refuses to stoop to Lelouch's level. In retaliation, she beats him severely during their next meeting when Suzaku tries to apologize.

The Guren S.E.I.T.E.N.Eight Elements-Type

During the second battle of Tokyo, Kallen is rescued from captivity and returned to the Guren (complete with a pilot suit brought by Sayoko), which had been radically upgraded by Lloyd Asplund and Cécile Croomy during her imprisonment. Using the new Guren, she annihilates the Britannian forces. Luciano Bradley and the Valkyrie squadron are killed, as are an untold number of support units. She then fights Suzaku, easily breaking through his defenses and bringing him to the brink of death. In doing so, however, she activates his Geass command, forcing him to survive by firing the F.L.E.I.J.A. bomb. She dodges it and the bomb hits the government building, destroying a fair portion of the Tokyo Settlement.

After Kallen returns to the Black Knights, she learns of C.C.'s memory loss and realizes that Lelouch is alone. When Zero's identity is revealed, she tries to defend him. The others won't listen, suspecting that Lelouch is controlling her. She asks Lelouch what she means to him, expressing a willingness to die with him. Seeing no way out, Lelouch mocks the Black Knights for taking so long to realize the truth, then calls Kallen a pawn. As Kallen walks away feeling betrayed, he whispers "Kallen, you must live on" within earshot. She unsuccessfully tries to get the Black Knights to wait after their first attempt to kill Zero fails thanks to Rolo Lamperouge, and is left standing on the hangar floor when Rolo uses his Geass to escape with Lelouch. After Lelouch's escape, Kallen tries to protest how Ohgi and the others have discarded Zero so readily despite all that he has done for them, but they refuse to listen, still angered at the idea that they were merely being used as pawns. When Lelouch is crowned Emperor, Kallen and the rest of the Black Knights are visibly stunned.

Following Lelouch's declaration that Britannia will join the U.F.N., Kallen escorts him to the meeting, giving orders to the Black Knights beforehand to gun her down if she appears to be under the influence of Geass. Lelouch gets her to take the long route, giving them the chance to speak in private. Kallen recounts their history, and then asks Lelouch what he intends to gain by becoming Emperor, as well as what she means to him. Lelouch remains silent, so she kisses him. When he still doesn't respond, she bids him farewell; he does the same once she can no longer hear him.

When Lelouch takes the U.F.N. leaders hostage, Kallen insists that she'll take Lelouch down personally, as she possesses the only Knightmare capable of fighting Suzaku's Lancelot Albion. However, Xingke orders her not to fight, fearing for the safety of the hostages. After the Black Knights side with Schneizel, Kallen is stationed in the front lines. She breaks away from the main line to try to reach Lelouch, but is called back. Kallen breaks into the Avalon and attempts to kill Lelouch, with tears in her eyes as she does so, but is stopped by C.C. Kallen defeats C.C. and, with the help of Gino, proceeds to the Damocles for a final confrontation with Suzaku.

After a fierce battle, Kallen manages to land a decisive blow on the Lancelot; however, this is at the cost of having her Guren completely disabled in the process and losing consciousness. While the Lancelot explodes, she falls from the floating fortress to what would have been her death had it not been for Gino's rescue. After the battle, she is taken along with many others who rebelled against Lelouch to execution, and then witnesses Lelouch's death by Suzaku disguised as Zero. She immediately understands what Lelouch has done, and stoutly proclaims that it is the real Zero with tears in her eyes.

In the two months following Lelouch's death, Kallen has forgiven Lelouch since she realized his intention—to sacrifice himself and through it to expunge the hatred of the world. She narrates about the changed world he created. She is shown living with her mother in the city. She still attends Ashford Academy and is one of the members of Rivalz's new Student Council, but has thrown away her frail cover, signified by her going to school with her preferred hairstyle and the Guren's key around her neck. She keeps several photos of her friends in her room and smiles at the one with Lelouch before eating a piece of French toast, waving goodbye to her mother before hurrying to school.

Kallen's character poem in the Code Geass DVD reveals that she had fallen in love with Lelouch through her devotion to him and that if he had ever told her that he loved her again, she would've "followed him to hell". Knowing that she would do precisely that was the reason Lelouch remained silent, as had they consummated their feelings, she would have found out about the Zero Requiem, subsequently trying to talk him out of it and, if that didn't work, commit suicide, he wanted Kallen to live on. She then declares that it wasn't just because of that she fell in love with him, but also due to the noble actions she had always supported and revealed to her by Nunnally. Four months later, she is present for Lelouch's miracle over the Student Council, where he asks her to never give up on them and thanking her for staying in school; when he departs, she grimaces over the fact she will never stop loving him.

Abilities[edit]

Kallen is a highly skilled Knightmare Frame pilot, rivaling the abilities of even the Knights of the Round. She is acknowledged as the best pilot of the Black Knights by enemies and allies alike. Her codename, "Q-1," is the Queen's starting spot in descriptive chess notation. In Lelouch's assessment of the core members of the Black Knights, her "Combat Ability" score is 100 out of 100, matching that of Kyoshiro Tohdoh; she also has the highest possible "Loyalty" score of 100.[5]

Even when piloting outdated Knightmare Frames such as the Glasgow, Kallen proves to be a dangerous opponent easily defeating numerous Sutherlands, despite the Sutherland being a more advanced Knightmare.

Outside of a Knightmare, Kallen displays superior fighting abilities. She is nimble enough to swat a bee with a single swipe (and cut it in thirds), and on two occasions she defeats numerous armed men with little trouble. She is also apparently intelligent, since her grades in school are top of the class despite frequent absences.

Appearances in other media[edit]

Lost Colors[edit]

In the video game spin-off Code Geass: Lost Colors, Kallen was one of the characters Rai meets, along with the other student council members, and greeted him after he wakes up. If the player chooses either Black Knight route or Blue Moon route, Rai becomes Kallen's love interest as their relationship developed and attempts to be close to him, while the player interacts more with Kallen if the player progresses a relationship with her in the Blue Moon route.

At day 1 to 5, Kallen arrived at the school and meets Rai at the courtyard, leading the two to have a friendly interaction with each other and eventually causing all the male students around them to develop a killing intent on Rai.[6][7]

In one scene, Kallen asks to meet Rai in a hot spring. The rest of the student council comes in while they are talking, resulting in Kallen trying to explain the misunderstanding. Kallen eventually walks out.[8]

Blue Moon Route[edit]

In the Blue Moon Route, Rai received a blue colored letter and follows the letters instructions to go a place, leading him to a church and finds Kallen there. Kallen confesses her love to him but fears that it won't work out for them and Rai reassuring her that it would. The next scene shows the two of them are dating and now a couple. Kallen makes Rai a lunchbox saying how he always works hard and tells him he should eat as much as possible.[9]

Black Knight Route[edit]

In her first day, since Rai's arrival at Ashford Academy, Kallen arrived at Rai's place to lead him to the student council room by Milly. There she later suggested to go to different places that would trigger his memory, leading Milly to vote for Kallen as Rai's caretaker, which Shirley and Nina agrees.[10] If the player chooses to have Kallen as her caretaker, Kallen herself becomes doubtful.[11] If the player chooses not to have Kallen as her caretaker, Kallen sees him having doubt and decides to accept the role of his caretaker.[12]

When the student council members notice Rai being lively, they suspect Kallen may have influence him as they've been seen together lately and suspected having a relationship with him, which Kallen denied and ask Rai to clear up the misunderstanding.[13] If the player choose to confirm Kallen's words, she becomes satisfied and the student council members sees them on good terms.[14] If the player choose to confirm the student council's word, Kallen becomes shocked and embarrassed and the student council members becomes surprised and cheerful.[15] After the two left, they decided to go to Shinjuku Ghetto, to search for a clue on Rai's identity.

While searching through the ghetto, Kallen notice Rai recognizing a building and suspect Rai was Japanese, then notice Kallen's face brightened up.[16] If the player chooses to say if she laughed at him, Kallen denies it and decides to look around more.[17] If the player choose to say if she's happy, Kallen replied that he had remembered something since she's been keeping him company, which Rai thanked her.[18] Later, the two are caught in a battle by a group of Anti-Britannian terrorists with Burai Kightmare Frames pretending to be the Black Knights and a group of Britannian Sutherlands and Knight Police Frames. As they try to escape, they see a Burai falling onto them. If the player chooses to Protect Kallen, Rai immediately grabs Kallen in between his arms and turned his back towards the Burai.[19] If the player chooses to thrust Kallen away, Rai lied face down on the ground, knocking Kallen to the ground as well.[20] The two later went in the damaged Burai, with Rai piloting it visually as the hatch can’t close while Kallen wrapped around his body and tried to escape, but later encountered a Sutherland who was targeting the Burai and started to attack. However Rai managed to defeat him easily, which led Kallen to become surprised and impressed. They later encountered the real Black Knights defeating both the terrorists and the Britannian army while they were helping the civilians escape, leading Kallen to have them recognize her and let them leave.[21]

The next day in Ashford Academy, Kallen meets Rai in the courtyard and request she would talk to him in the rooftops involving the battle at Shinjuku. Kallen then asked Rai how he knew to easily pilot a Knightmare, which he replied that he just knew.[22] If the player choose to say if he was a Britannian who was in the army before, Kallen thinks of it as a possibility.[23] If the player choose to say what Kallen thinks, she replied the possibility of Rai being a soldier of a Japanese resistance cell, which Rai thinks of himself as a dangerous person, but Kallen comments that he should be happy about the clues of his identity increased.[24] During lunch break after their discussion, both Kallen and Rai went to the cafeteria together, which cause the attention to the other students there, which both don't know why. Later Rivalz appeared with Lelouch and has teased them for the two being a couple after a rumor mentioning her relationship with Rai went well and the incident involving the two in the Shinjuku ghetto, which includes Rai protecting Kallen. The rumor has shocked Kallen and Rai, with Lelouch thanked Rai for his deed and Rivalz curious to know what. Although Kallen had confirmed that Rai had saved her, she was annoyed by Rivalz's constant bickering, which led to Lelouch convincing him not to bother her more.[25]

Kallen later went to the Black Knight's hideout and meets with Zero to report about what happened in Shinjuku ghetto and revealed to him about Rai and his piloting skills. This report got Zero interested and was recommended by Kallen that he would join the Black Knights. [26] The next day, Kallen waited for Rai from his chess match with Lelouch and sent him a signal to follow her,[27] which the player will choose to follow her right away,[28] or follow her after a little while,[29] and meet Kallen in the School garden, who then given him an invitation to meet her.

The next day, Kallen waited for Rai at the Ghetto Ruins, witnessed his arrival and revealed her true self to him, which slightly surprised Rai. Kallen then led Rai to a tunnel and requested him to join her to fight against Britannia, believing him to be Japanese, which has confused Rai. The two arrived at an Abandoned Building and Kallen introduces him to Zero and revealed herself as Kallen Kouzuki, a member of the Black Knights. Kallen also requested Rai to join them, and requested to Zero for his admission, which Zero let Rai to decide, but noted they will take measures to protect their secret.[30] If the player chooses to have no choice[31] or accepts to join,[32] Kallen becomes pleased. However, if the player chooses that he is unsure, Kallen becomes shocked when Zero noted his silence mean he refused and prepares to open fire, but Kallen shielded Rai and begged him to join and revealed to him the Black Knights have an intelligence network to discover clues involving his past, leading Rai to have no choice but to join the Black Knights, but comments he will only trust Kallen.[33]

In the Black Knights Route, Rai stops Princess Euphemia from following through with Lelouch's accidental Geass command (an alternate version to episode 22–23), which he was shot in the process. After Rai woke up and was healed, Kallen shows a great deal of gratitude toward Rai for saving the Japanese and shead in tears as Rai is alive and the two embrace each other as they kiss. Afterwards Rai and Kallen continue to be faithful members of the Black Knights.

Geass Route[edit]

In the Geass Route ending, Kallen was in the hangar tuning her Guren and was approached by Rai who wanted to talk to her. When Rai revealed that he's leaving the Black Knights, Kallen was shocked and demanded a reason from him. This led to Rai telling her that he has an illness and doesn't know how long he has left. After hearing this, Kallen ordered him to cure his illness and return. After Rai had left the hangar, Kallen turned to her Guren and slammed her fist in anger and sadness.[34][35]

Code Geass (manga)[edit]

The manga differs from the real series focusing on the Black Knights activities; in the manga Kallen is not present during C.C's appearance. Lelouch's first meeting with her is also different as she bumps into him at school.

Kallen protests at the school rather than at the settlement. She is also apparently Zero's only soldier as only she helps him, such as when they rescue Suzaku.

Nightmare of Nunnally[edit]

In the manga spin-off series Nightmare of Nunnally, Kallen and the other Resistance members took advantage of the arrival of Nunnally's Mark Nemo Knightmare Frame to make their escape from Britannian forces pursuing them.

When Kallen escapes from the rooftops after she was taken hostage with the other student council members in a hotel at Lake Kawaguchi, she witnesses the arrival of the Mark Nemo. She later met up with Zero, who gave her a suitcase with the Black Knights uniform.

In the battle against Cornelia's forces in the Saitama ghetto, she met up with the Mark Nemo again and witness it destroying all of the Britannian forces, and thought it was on their side, but disagrees and starts to attack Kallen and her group. She was surprised that it knew her moves before it happened and was defeated.

Suzaku of the Counterattack[edit]

In the manga spin-off Suzaku of the Counterattack, Kallen becomes a member of the Black Knight after Zero forms the organization, but has doubts about his methods after a Black Knights faction had gone renegade and orchestrated an attack, taking the lives of nearby civilians, including Lenard Lubie.

When Zero is planning to attack the Britannian Art Gallery with the goal of assassinating the Emperor who has arrived there, Kallen confronted him about whether it would be a trap and also commented that she would still follow him. Admiring her answer and loyalty, Lelouch placed a geass command on her that if anything would happen to him then she would lead the Black Knights. When the Black Knights took the Art Gallery hostage, she is confronted by Suzaku and was surprised that she's not only a member but a half Britannian-Japanese right after he left to stop Zero from killing the Emperor. After Lelouch was captured and accused for killing the Emperor, Kallen assume leadership of the Black Knights as the new Zero and later led the remaining Black Knight members to begin an assault on the Governor Building of Area 11, unaware that Lelouch is freed by Suzaku and are both planning to stop Schneizel.

Five years later, a 22-year-old Kallen is seen walking on the street and still a member of the Black Knights and in contact, but while she was passing by, she suddenly saw someone who resembles a 17-year-old Suzaku, which she thinks she's imagine it.

Another Century's Episode: R[edit]

Kallen makes an appearance in the Another Century's Episode: R video game in her Knightmare Frame, the Guren Mk-II in an alternative event of R2.

Kallen appeared in her world, in an alternative event of episode 6 of the second season, on a mission in her Guren Nishki to destroy a group of Caerleon battle ships until a group of Sutherland Knightmares appears. Kallen manages to defeat them all, but her Guren's radiation surge wave arm was badly damaged, but also fell when the ship began to shake, which led Rakshata to send her unit to transform her Guren Nishki to the Guren Kashōshiki. She later proceeds to destroy the other Caerleon along with Todoh in his Zangetsu Knightmare and encountered Suzaku in his Lancelot along with Gino in his Tristan and Anya in her Mordred. Kallen had fought the three and defeated them, causing Suzaku to order a retreat to the Chinese Federation.[36]

After Zero kidnaps Empress Tianzi, Kallen fought against Xingke in his Knightmare Frame, Shen Hu, while defending the Ikaruga flagship from being attacked by a group of Gun Ru's. After the Enuches plans were exposed to the media, Kallen, along with Zero, C.C., and Xingke, have worked together and attack the Enuches land fortress, Leung Tan, leading them to their deaths while the fortress explode. After being confronted by a fleet of Britannian Knightmares, including the four Rounds, the group encountered an unknown Black Hole and Kallen was sucked in along with Zero and C.C.[37]

Super Robot Wars Z 2 Hakai-Hen[edit]

Kallen and the rest of the Code Geass R1 cast will make their debut to the Super Robot Wars franchise in this game, using their R1 Knightmares.

Nunnally in Wonderland[edit]

In a special OVA parody episode, based on the Alice in Wonderland story, Kallen appears in the role as the March Hare.[38]

Yes, I, to tell the truth, did not care much. I was just addicted to her young body. Her inexperience, naivety. She trusted me. She trusted what the Elephant told her.
