Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is composed of urea and de-ionised water and is injected into the exhaust gasses of many modern diesel engines.  DEF significantly reduces the amount of exhaust gas emissions and pollution by converting harmful nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and steam.

Most vehicles equipped with DEF will have a dedicated tank that requires to be refilled at normal service intervals. The size of the tank is usually designed so that you should not have to refill the fluid in between services, however individual vehicle’s consumption may be higher depending on operating conditions. The vehicle will not operate unless there is sufficient fluid in the vehicle’s tank.

The following is a guide for adding Diesel exhaust fluid to a 2012 – 2015 Passat TDI (additional years and models may also apply)

Step 1:

Open the trunk and locate the cover for the tank on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Step 2:

Remove the plastic cover by gently pushing in and up from the bottom.

Step 3:

Unscrew the cap by twisting it counter-clockwise

Step 4:

Grab your bottle of Diesel exhaust fluid and carefully pour it into the tank. It is important that you check the capacity for your specific vehicle in the owners manual to avoid overfilling.

I chose to use a bottle from a local Volkswagen dealer which comes with an attachment on the end that screws into the tank so no fluid gets spilled. You can also purchase bulk fluid at most auto part stores, but you will need to use a funnel and pour slowly so that it doesn’t splash all over the place. In this case, I used about 3 bottles, or about 1.5 gallons of fluid.

Step 5:

Replace the cap and re-install the plastic cover.

That’s it! You’re all done.

NOTE: Diesel exhaust fluid is very easy to use and is a harmless substance. It is non-flammable and non-explosive. If you ever spill AdBlue on your hands, simply wash them thoroughly with water.

What does Volkswagen bottle pouring fluid dashboard indicator mean?

It almost feels like a bad game of Pictionary, trying to guess what the dashboard warning light on your vehicle is trying to tell you. Some are obvious enough that you’ll easily be able to guess, while others are a little more cryptic.

If you’re wondering what does the Volkswagen bottle pouring fluid dashboard indicator mean, and no that’s not its technical name, just how we best described it, we’ll tell you a little more about what it is and what you should do.

Volkswagen AdBlue Dashboard Warning Light

If the title didn’t give it away, this is the AdBlue warning indicator. If you drive a DIESEL Volkswagen, it could appear on your dash either in yellow or red. As you may have guessed, red is the more severe warning of the two.

yellow adblue warning lightWhen the warning light is yellow, it is merely telling you that your AdBlue fluid is getting low and needs to be refilled soon as possible.

adblue red indicatorWhen the red warning light appears, there isn’t enough AdBlue or the system is malfunctioning. If this is the case, the vehicle will not start.

What is AdBlue and why do diesel Volkswagens need it?

Drivers who have a gas-powered Volkswagen, this will not apply to you, but for those of you who drive a diesel, this is important.

Not all diesel-powered Volkswagen required AdBlue–namely it only is the heavier diesel models. This includes popular picks like the Passat and the Touraeg. AdBlue helps these models to drive more efficiently. AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream of these Volkswagen models in effort to help control the Nitrogen Oxides that are produced.

On average, the ADBlue will run out around 10,000 miles and that’s why Volkswagen includes AdBlue refills in its three-year/36,000-mile free maintenance coverage. Essentially your first three AdBlue refills will be free.

How to Check Your Ad Blue Fluid on a VW Passat TDI

Some Volkswagen models (the more premium ones, of course) are fitted with a reservoir of fluid called Ad Blue. This is sprayed into exhaust fumes and significantly reduces harmful elements.

The Ad Blue, or diesel exhaust fluid as most people know it, is part of your initial scheduled maintenance and should last as much as the engine oil. However, consumption of the fluid can vary due to climate conditions and your driving style.

If you're low, a special light will flash on your dashboard. Be warned that if you do run out of the stuff, the all-mighty Passat will probably not start. The tank is sutured on the right side of your tank, so you can buy a bottle of Ad Blue from your dealer and fill it up yourself if needed. The bottle has screws into place and you have to press it down to fill the tank.

Ad Blue releases ammonium into your catalyst, reducing NOx emissions into oxygen and water.
