Elf age dnd 5e

Elf age dnd 5e DEFAULT

Could an elf PC start adventuring at the age of 20?

This is a question that is probably more about the world your campaign is located.

Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms (in numerous novels) indicate that elves at the age of 20 would appear to our eyes like human children. They grow slowly, and learn slowly. Time passes for them subjectively different then quick-paced humans.

The Player's Handbook indicates "elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans," but this is not a universal conception for elves. Going with that thought though, the implication is they don't reach emotional/mental maturity at that age.

The fragile 20 year old elf may suffer all kinds of malnutrition and loss of connection from being apart from its family and homelands. Traditionally, the magic of the Elven homelands and interaction is like nourishment. The year old elf would appear and act similar to your 20 year old characters.

You are free to make your elves however you like in your world. For instance, in the harsh climate of Athas, where to the elves the wastes are considered Elven lands (multiple editions), the starting ages for elves are ish. The destructive magical cataclysm of Athas had transformed Elves significantly, forcing them to mature and grow up faster (over thousands of years).

If the question is the rules as written in the Players Handbook, the starting age is listed there:

An elf typically c1aims adulthood and an adult name around the age of and can live to be years old.

This is probably based more or less on Tolkien sources, adapted for game purposes (In Tolkien Elves were immortal, but suffered over thousands of years when separated from the Undying Lands).

You can choose any age for your character, which could provide an explanation for some of your ability scores.

As to would it be weird, I give just one of a million possibilities: The elven character was plane-shifted from Athas (chose Outlander background); use these stats (no minuses in 5e, do +1 Int as per High Elf, convert everything else):

Again, whether that is weird, also depends on your gaming world.

So for multiple reasons, the Player's handbook is giving one some artistic license here, with which a player can work with their DM and his/her game world.

Elf Traits[]

Ghalan.jpg

Your elf character has a variety of natural abilities, the result of thousands of years of elven refinement.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2. Your constitution score is decreased by 2.

Age. Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the elven understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims adulthood and an adult name around the age of and can live to be years old.

Alignment. Elves love freedom, variety, and selfexpression, so they lean strongly toward the gentler aspects of chaos. They value and protect others’ freedom as well as their own, and they are more often good than not.

Size. Elves range from under 5 to over 6 feet tall and have slender builds. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision. Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of grey.

Keen Senses. You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Elf Weapon Training. You have proficiency with the longsword, short sword, short bow, and longbow.

Trance. Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Elvish. Elvish is fluid, with subtle intonations and intricate grammar. Elven literature is rich and varied, and their songs and poems are famous among other races. Many bards learn their language so they can add Elvish ballads to their repertoires.

Sub races[]

High Elf[]

Yawalii.jpg

Haughty and noble, believing themselves to be superior to non-elves and even other elves, high elves non the less are creatures of elegant beauty, sublime charm and wit. Native to the lands of Fae, the High Elves often set up court in places where the border between the mundane world and the fae world is thin and blurred.

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 1.

Cantrip. You know one cantrip of your choice from the sorcerer spell list. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for it.

Extra Language. You can speak, read, and write two extra languages of your choice.

Sylvan Elf[]

Sylvan elves are elves that have made the mundane world their permanent home, severing ties with the land of Fae. They dwell in nature, and are often demure secretive and reserved compared to their other elven brethren. Non the less, they maintain some of the lightheartedness of other fey, and are known to hold magnificent parties.

Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Nimble footed. You ignore difficult terrain.

At home in the trees. Your climb speed is equal to your walking speed when climbing trees, vines or other plants. In addition you have advantage to Strength (Athletics) and Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks to climb or otherwise move in trees and foliage.

Extra skill or proficiency. You gain proficiency with either the Animal Handling, Nature, Stealth or Survival skill, or with the herbalism kit or one musical instrument of your choice.

Drow (Dark Elf)[]

Drows typically live underground or in dark areas, such as caves, and are usually thought of as evil, which is not necessarily true. They are considered 'evil' because they generally practice 'dark magic,' and because their skin color is a very dark grey, making them look ominous.

Aquatic Elf[]

Aquatic Elves, also known as 'Sea Elves,' live, not surprisingly, in or near the water. They are not as well known as their relatives, the High Elves, the Sylvan Elves, or even the Drows, all of which are listed above.

D&D 5E Role Playing: Elf Age/Maturity

Fractal Rabbit said:

We haven't determined their life span yet. Do the any of the 5E books give a maximum lifespan? And is there a table like in previous editions that show middle age and old age?

Do they suffer attribute pluses and minuses? I don't have my books with me right now to check.

The 5e books do give maximum lifespans, and each racial entry tells about how fast they reach adulthood.

I would advise against looking at the age categories of elves in prior editions, as they were frankly just stupid. Basically, elves took forever to get to adulthood, and then rapidly descended into middle and old, and even older age. Most elves would be children or elderly under that system, in contrast to the way elves have generally been presented in D&D, which is much like Tolkien's elves in that they seem to be forever young adults. Just go with the 5e PHB (or Basic Rules) info which is far superior and believable. Elves physically mature at about the same rate as humans, but aren't socially considered adults until sometime after they reach *, and can live up to about While I can't find it, I'm positive that 5e said they have an ageless look about them and don't appear to physically degenerate even when they get older. (Does anyone know the reference for that?)

If you want a suggestion for an age that seems thematically appropriate in 5e, I'd say somewhere in the range of

* I think this was a minor design mistake, as it can leads to the problematic example of being a great-great-great-grandparent while you're still considered a child. My personal solution is to just add in a note saying that elves aren't fertile until they get to around
