New for 2018

The 2018 Kia Optima receives a 7.0-inch touchscreen, blind spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert as standard equipment on all models. Laminated front windows, a 10-way power driver's seat, and auto up/down front windows are now standard on the LX 1.6T and the LX 2.4 with the Convenience package. A new S trim has also been added, slotting just above the LX 2.4.

The SX Turbo model gets LED fog lights, a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a 10-way power front passenger seat, and Kia's UVO3 infotainment system as standard. Kia has also discontinued the SX Limited trim and turned it into an optional package for the SX trim of the Optima.

Vehicle Summary

The 2018 Kia Optima is a front-drive midsize sedan slotting above the compact Forte and below the larger, full-size Cadenza. In addition to gas-powered variants, the Optima is also available as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid.


Three gas engines are available in the 2018 Optima including a 2.4-liter I-4 with 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, a 1.6-liter turbo-four with 178 hp and 195 lb-ft, and a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 245 hp and 260 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic transmission is paired to the base 2.4-liter I-4 and 2.0-liter turbo-four, while a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is exclusive to the 1.6-liter turbo-four. EPA fuel economy ratings are 24/34 mpg city/highway for the base 2.4-liter in LX and EX grade, 25/36 mpg for the 2.4-liter in FE trim, 28/37 mpg for the LX 1.6T and 22/31 mpg for the SX Turbo. Trunk space in the 2018 Optima is 15.9 cubic feet and can be expanded via the 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

In addition to the gas engines, the Optima is also available as a hybrid that combines a 2.0-liter I-4, an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery, and a six-speed automatic. The standard Optima Hybrid is has a combined output of 192 hp and 271 lb-ft and the Optima Plug-In is rated at 202 hp and 276 lb-ft. EPA fuel economy ratings are 39/46 mpg for the standard hybrid. The Optima Plug-In is rated at 40 mpg combined and can travel up to 29 miles in EV mode thanks to a larger battery. Total range with a full tank and a fully charged battery is 610 miles according to the EPA. Opting for the hybrid powertrain does cut trunk space down to 13.4 cubic feet but retains the 60/40 split-folding rear seats. The Optima Plug-In loses more cargo space and the 60/40-split-folding rear seats due to the larger battery, cutting trunk space to 9.8 cubic feet.

Base models come with 16-inch alloy wheels, Kia's UVO3 infotainment system, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, a 3.5-inch multi-information display, cloth upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, a USB port, blind spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Higher trim levels can be had with leather or Nappa leather upholstery, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, a Harman/Kardon premium audio system, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive LED headlights, alloy wheels up to 18 inches in diameter, a surround view camera system, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, keyless entry/start, a smart trunk with a hands-free opening, and additional USB ports for fast charging.


The 2018 Optima received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars). The IIHS has yet to test the 2018 model but the 2017 Optima received a Good score on all crash tests and the headlights tests (Good is the highest possible score). In the front crash prevention test, the Optima received a Superior rating after in avoided a 12- and 25-mph collision (Superior is the highest rating in the front crash prevention test). As a result, the Optima received the 2017 Top Safety Pick+ award.

On the EX and SX trims, a suite of driver assistance and active safety features that includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning are available.

What We Think

In a 2016 First Test of the Optima LX 1.6T, we noted that the tiny little turbocharged engine didn't give up much when it comes to acceleration thanks to a quick-shifting dual-clutch automatic. At highway speeds, however, you do need to plan your passes as the small turbo engine can feel slightly lethargic. Interior space, on the other hand, is generous with plenty of room for front and rear seat passengers. Material quality on lower trim levels is also not on par with higher grade models, especially on the base LX trim.

The more powerful 2.0-liter turbo-four in the SX trim didn't have much of an advantage in terms of acceleration due to prodigious amounts of turbo lag, as we noted in a 2016 First Test. Comfort levels and ride quality, on the other hand, are respectable even with the standard 18-inch alloy wheels on the SX trim.

The 2018 Optima's optional 2.0-liter turbo-four is also found in a number of vehicles including the Kia Sorento and Sportage, as well as the Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe Sport.

The affordable Optima's handsome exterior is supplemented by several powertrains, including a workaday base engine, two turbocharged versions, and two hybrid options. Every model is available with the latest active-safety and infotainment features. In fact, the Kia suffers few negatives—other than having excellent competitors that have virtually perfected the family-sedan formula. Still, the Optima is an attractive, capable car that will satisfy most most buyers looking for a mid-size sedan.

What's New for 2018?

The Optima gets some minor updates for 2018. A 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto replaces the old 5.0-inch unit, which lacked smartphone integration. The SXL model has been discontinued; its top-of-the-line features are now offered as the Limited package on SX trim. The Optima also adds a new S model, which wears sporty exterior bits and is available with a panoramic sunroof. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid only have minor color and trim changes.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Optima lineup includes a wide array of powertrains, and our opinion varies as much as the order sheet. The naturally aspirated 2.4-liter 185-hp four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission found in the Optima’s LX and EX trims make up a workaday powertrain. It's sometimes slow to react to inputs and a little coarse in its upper ranges. We much prefer the smoother and quicker combination of the 178-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter four and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The range-topping 245-hp 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder is refined and pleasing but less powerful and significantly slower from zero to 60 mph than its direct competitors. There are also fuel-efficient hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains available. On the road, the Optima is capable, polished, and stands up reasonably well to spirited driving. It’s simply not on the same level as the best in this class, though. On challenging pavement, it loses its composure a few ticks before standouts like the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Optima’s interior can be very nice, but it can also be very spartan, and prices ramp up steeply for the better-outfitted trim levels. The base LX has a six-speaker sound system, cloth seating surfaces, manually adjustable driver’s seat, and manual climate controls. Moving up through the trim levels adds features like heated and ventilated leather seating, a 10-speaker premium sound system, 12-way power adjustable driver's seat with memory, and dual-zone climate control. The Optima's rear seat is the least spacious among its closest competitors. Its ability to haul cargo is as good as any sedan in its class, although the hybrid models sacrifice cargo space to their battery packs. Front-seat storage is as good as any rival, but there are fewer nooks in the rear seat.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Kia’s UVO infotainment system includes a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and six-speaker audio. Buyers can upgrade to an 8.0-inch screen, navigation and a premium sound system, but a Wi-Fi hotspot is still unavailable. UVO is simple and easy to use, and there are plenty of power ports to go around.
