Some CVS pharmacies in California will begin offering COVID-19 vaccines next week
Select CVS Pharmacy locations across California will begin offering COVID-19 vaccines to eligible residents next week, the company said Tuesday.
Appointments will become available as early as Feb. 9 "as stores receive shipments of vaccine," according to spokesperson Monica Prinzing.
The supply — 81,900 doses across California — will come directly from the federal pharmacy partnership program.
Walgreens, which has already opened up appointmentsin select California counties, will also expand its rollout next week on Feb. 12.
Both CVS and Walgreens have already been in charge of the effort to vaccinate most nursing home and long-term care residents and staff in the U.S.
CVS said it will receive 250,000 doses initially, to be distributed to pharmacies in 11 states next week.
"Eligibility is based on state criteria which will be confirmed and communicated by each state," Prinzing said via email Tuesday. "Vaccines at participating CVS Pharmacy locations will be available to individuals who meet the state’s criteria."
Participating CVS locations in next week's California rolloutinclude, but are not limited to:
- Agoura Hills
- Chula Vista
- Huntington Beach
- La Jolla
- Los Angeles
- Newport Beach
- San Diego
- San Francisco
- Yuba City
Prinzing said that a list of specific stores will be available on CVS.com and updated as stores receive shipments of vaccine.
"As more supply becomes available the company will expand to more locations and offer additional appointments," the company said.
About 335 CVS Pharmacy locations will be included in the initial rollout. The other states include Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.
CVS Pharmacy is already administering the COVID-19 vaccine by appointment in select locations inConnecticut and Massachusettsfor health care workers, qualifying essential workers and people ages 75 and older, according to its website. It is also vaccinating those ages 70 and older in select Ohio and South Carolina locations; and those 65 and older in select San Juan, Puerto Rico locations.
The pharmacy partner has already provided first doses to 499 skilled nursing facilities in California and completed 81% of second doses in those facilities as of Tuesday. It has also provided first doses to 65% of the 14,557 other long-term care facilities it has partnered with in the state.
"Vaccines will eventually be available at CVS Pharmacy locations throughout the country subject to product availability, with the capacity to administer 20-25 million shots per month," the company said.
Appointments are required and can be made through CVS.com, the CVS Pharmacy app, or by contacting CVS customer service at (800) 746-7287.
White House to send 1M doses to pharmacies
President Joe Biden’s administration announced Tuesday that it was freeing up more doses for states and would start distributing to retail pharmacies, like CVS, next week.
The push comes amid new urgency to speed vaccinations to prevent the spread of potentially more serious strains of the virus that has killed more than 445,000 Americans.
Starting next week, 1 million vaccine doses will be distributed to some 6,500 pharmacies across the country, the White House said. The administration is also boosting by 500,000 the weekly allocation of vaccines sent directly to states and territories for the coming weeks, up to 10.5 million. It is allowing state and local governments to receive additional federal dollars to cover previously incurred expenses relating to the pandemic.
Drugstores have become a mainstay for flu shots and shingles vaccines, and the industry is capable of vaccinating tens of millions of people monthly. “This will provide more sites for people to get vaccinated in their communities,” Coronavirus coordinator Jeff Zients said Tuesday.
“This is a critical step to provide the public with convenient trusted places to get vaccinated in their communities," he added.
The number of participating pharmacies and the allocation of vaccines are expected to accelerate as drug makers increase production. The White House said the ultimate goal was to distribute the vaccines through more than 40,000 pharmacies nationwide.
State and local guidelines will determine who is eligible to get a shot at their neighborhood pharmacy. Availability will be limited at first.
“Getting it into pharmacies is a viable approach,” said Dan Mendelson, founder of the health care industry consulting firm Avalere Health. “The pharmacies know how to move people in and out.”
Part of the reason the vaccination campaign got off to a slow start, he added, is that states lacked their own infrastructure for mass vaccinations.
The partnership with drugstores was originally announced by the Trump administration in November. At that time, no coronavirus vaccines had been approved. Participating are major chains like CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid, big box stores such as Walmart and Costco, and supermarket pharmacies.
The pharmacy doses will be distributed to states by population, but a priority will be to get the vaccine to minority communities that have suffered a disproportionately high toll of disease and deaths from the virus, Zients said.
He said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was “making sure that we are picking pharmacies in that first phase that are located in areas that are harder to reach to ensure that we have equitable distribution of the pharmacy doses.” Walgreens said it was selected in part to “optimize vaccine access in medically underserved areas.”
The 1 million doses being shipped to pharmacies will be on top of the increased allotments to states over the coming three weeks. The Biden administration has sought to increase certainty to state governments on their upcoming allocations to streamline deliveries and prevent stockpiling of second doses for the two-dose regimens.
Walgreens also expanding vaccinerollout
Walgreens is already providing a limited number of COVID-19 vaccines in select stores in some states including California. According to its website, it has administered more than 300,000 doses through these efforts. This also includes select stores in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Puerto Rico, South Carolina and Texas.
Doses allocated to Walgreens for next week's rollout will be available in some pharmacies in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
Since December, Walgreens has administered first doses to 323 skilled nursing facilities in Californiaand had first dose clinics in 978 of the 1,638 long-term care facilities it is partnered with in the state.
Appointments at Walgreens will become available as doses do and can be made at Walgreens.com/ScheduleVaccine.
