Find Your Nissan Color and Nissan Paint Code

Nissan codes are easy to find as they are always on the drivers door jamb. Some require getting pretty low on the drivers door jamb so you can read them, but the code is easy to read and understand. If you cannot locate your color label, you can call Nissan, provide them with your VIN, and they will tell you your color code over the phone. Nissan's North America phone number is 1-800-647-7261.

Illustration of Where to Find Your Nissan Color Code
The image below is an example Nissan ID tag which lists the color code near the bottom left.
Nissan Color Code placement on a Nissan Color ID tag

Typical Nissan color code format

In the example above, the code is "AX6" which corresponds to the Nissan color Redline Clearcoat. Nissan paint color codes are typically three digits long and made up of numbers and letters. Sometimes these three digits are followed by a small space and a fourth digit - but you can ignore this fourth digit.

Same Color Code, Different Name
Nissan, like all manufacturers, uses the exact same color across many models and then will have a different color name for each model. It's the same paint! This is why the color code is so important to order the correct paint.

For example, AX6, above we call Redline Clearcoat. It could also be called Red Clearcoat, High Performance  Clearcoat, etc. depending on what the Nissan marketing department decided to call it.

How To Repair Damaged Nissan Paint With Nissan Touch Up Paint

By following these Nissan paint repair directions, you can make your Nissan paint shine again! For more detailed instructions, including how to use Nissan spray paint, see our Directions for How To Apply Touch Up Paint.

1. Prepare Your Nissan for Touch Up Paint

Make sure the temperature is over 50 degrees F, then wash the damaged paint on your Nissan with soap and water. Use a wax and grease remover on the area. Placing masking tape around your scratched Nissan paint will help protect the surrounding auto paint.

2. Repair Rusted Areas Before Applying Nissan Touch Up Paint

Remove all traces of rust from your Nissan with 220 grit sandpaper or a wire brush. Then use rust converter and apply it to the rusted area of your Nissan.

3. Apply Primer Before Painting Your Nissan

If you have an unpainted surface on your Nissan, like bare metal or plastic, apply primer before Nissan touch up paint! Apply several thin coats of primer to the Nissan paint you are going to repair. Only apply a small amount of primer to your Nissan at time. Let the primer dry, overnight if possible, before applying the Nissan touch up paint. Once dry, lightly sand the primed Nissan paint area with #220 grit sandpaper followed by #600 wet and dry sandpaper.

4. How to Apply Nissan Touch Up Paint

You are now ready to apply Nissan touch up paint to your car. Apply several thin coats of Nissan touch up paint to build up the damaged paint area to the same depth as the surrounding surface. Let the Nissan paint dry for ten to twenty minutes between coats.  After the final coat, let the paint dry thoroughly before applying a clearcoat layer. Usually if you let the Nissan paint dry overnight, it will be dry. If temperatures are below 70 degrees F, allow additional time for the Nissan touch up paint to dry.

5. Protect Repaired Nissan Paint with Clearcoat

Make sure the Nissan touch up paint you applied earlier is dry. Apply several thin coats of clearcoat over the touched up Nissan paint, drying for ten to twenty minutes between each coat. Let the clearcoat dry overnight, or longer if temperatures are less than 70 degrees F.

6. Use Rubbing Compound to Make Your Nissan Paint Shine

Rubbing compound will help your Nissan touch up paint repair become smooth and shiny like the original paint. Let the clearcoat dry for at least three days, then use rubbing compound on your Nissan. Apply rubbing compound to your Nissan paint with a clean, soft cloth like an old tee shirt, but not wood products like paper towels. Place a small quantity of rubbing compound on the area where you applied Nissan touch up paint. Use circular strokes while applying even pressure to the surface. Buff with a clean cloth to a high gloss. For best Nissan touch up paint results, let your Nissan's finish dry for thirty days and then apply a good quality automotive wax.

Nissan Touch Up Paint Pens, Spray Paint, and Other Nissan Paint Products

Once you are ready to repair your Nissan with touch up paint, you need to decide which Nissan paint repair products to order. Nissan touch up paint pens are great for small and quick Nissan paint jobs, while Nissan spray paint is better for repairing larger areas. 2 oz. Nissan basecoat paint bottles work well if you have many Nissan paint chips to fix.

Nissan history and information

Nissan Story

The Nissan Motor Corporation went through many changes before it became what it is today, one of the top 5 largest car manufacturers in Japan. Operating under the name Datsun in its early years, the Nissan brand was introduced in the mid 1930s. Their primary market were little pickups and trucks for the simple reason that the use of passenger cars was not widespread in Japan at the time. This all changed when they proposed the little DAT car and Datsun car. From this point on, Nissan made big progress, the Datsun type 15 even became the first mass-produced vehicle in Japan. The company started exporting cars and trucks in Australia but it was only a stepping stone to their entry in the American market. Their early success in the U.S. market was supported by the use of the latest technological advancement and their design inspired by the Italian style. Similar to other Japanese manufacturers, Nissan was also favored in America during the oil crisis for their smaller high-quality economic models. In 1999 Nissan entered an alliance with French car maker Renault, the joint venture is now known under the name Renault-Nissan B.V. This alliance proved very efficient for the brand and it completely revived its sales around the globe. Nissan effectively maintained their technological predispositions and as such, the company has become a pioneer of the electric and low-emission car market. The Nissan Leaf and its truck counterpart the Nissan e-NV200 are the figureheads of Nissan's electric car line. What would be better to sustain your Nissan's body paint than TouchUpDirect's line of eco-friendly and color exact match touch up paint? With its low VOC and the no waste product line, TouchUpDirect is really the best touch up paint you can use on your Nissan.
