3 Computer Failure problem of the 2016 Dodge Dart

Failure Date: 10/08/2015

On a city street, tried to accelerate at a stop light with the brake on. Would not accelerate turning left in oncoming traffic. Intermittenly (hops) in motion exiting a highway, upon braking I traffic, stopped at a traffic light and in the driveway with the key removed. Tachometer has redlined (6500 rpm + ) moving in traffic at 46 mph on level road and upon take off from a red light. Tachometer has revved to 5500 rpm's on the down side of a hill when on cruse control multiple times when on the highway. The car has jerked severely driving down the highway at approximately 70 mph. Intermittently the climate control has difficulty in making a decision on the selection I made and has taken approximately 5 min before the air ( fan ) will engage. All dash lights have flashed when the key fob was pushed to unlock the doors. The auto door locks have failed to lock properly and engaged at 40 mph. The list is longer but my feeling is it is a computer problem and service says there is no code so no problem found. It has been in service 6 times that have been documented. My fear is this car is so defective and is going to kill me and possibly others if the computer fails with the steering or braking. The issues started @ 500 miles on the car, it now has 1900.

When the Dodge Dart hit the market in 2013, it wasn’t for the first time. The Dodge Dart has a proud history as one of the reasons Dodge rose to fame as it did in the 1960s. Originally, it hit the market in 1960 and had a place in the Dodge stable until 1976 when it discontinued the first time.

The Dodge Dart returned in 2013 but didn’t sell as well as FCA had hoped for. What happened to the latest incarnation of the Dodge Dart?

The new Dodge Dart

It wasn’t the best time to introduce a new car to the market when the Dodge Dart returned. Even a great car would have had an uphill climb to be successful. 

The 2013 Dodge Dart wasn’t a great car. 

Okay, it took the place of the Dodge Caliber, and it was a better car than that. The Dart was sharp-looking with a roomy cabin and handled well. The navigation and voice-recognition system worked very well. 

The resurrection of the Dodge Dart was meant to be part of a new era for Fiat Chrysler, the newly formed automaker that emerged from the recession. They promised a small American car with an Italian influence. It would be sporty, comfy, with great gas mileage and the latest technology. Fiat Chrysler pitched it as part of a family of vehicles that used an Alfa Romeo-based platform. It would take their company and all its brands including Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep to the next level.

Just over four years later, the Dart was no more. It was intended as a competitor for Chevy Cruze, Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, and others that sold somewhere in the ballpark of 200,000 to 300,000 units annually. Dart’s best sales year was 2015, and it managed to sell only 87,392.

Why was the 2013 Dodge Dart so bad?

The first Dodge Dart released, the 2013 models, amassed the most complaints on There were almost 400 complaints received – most of them centered around suspension and transmission problems. What was alarming was not just the number of complaints, but the average mileage the vehicle reached when the troubles set in. 

On average, the vehicles began seeing suspension problems by 15,000 miles and cost as much as $7,000 to repair. The transmission problems on average kicked in around 37,000 miles and cost around $700 for the repair. 

There were engine problems too. The engine light would come on for many reasons, including bad sensors, bad wiring, faulty gas caps, or ignition coil issues. Transmissions in the 2013 models of the Dodge Dart were failing, with failure hitting around 25,000 miles. Shifting was also difficult. Repairs could involve replacing a transmission cable. Sometimes, it required replacing the entire transmission.

One Texas owner experienced the car going out of gear a couple of times on an access road but also on a freeway. They said the car would shift but not actually change gears. When someone came to tow their Dodge Dart, they explained the linkage was broken at that time. The blower motor went out, followed by the alternator failing, and finally, the transmission.

While the highest number of complaints were filed about the 2013 Dodge Dart models, the 2014 models experienced serious engine issues as well. There were incidents of the engine stalling or failing completely while driving.

What happened to the Dodge Dart?

By 2016, the party was over. The Dart was being discontinued for the second time. Why? There were several reasons.

The Dodge Dart wasn’t the most fuel-efficient car, and it didn’t have exciting performance to offer. It was average. Even at a time when gas prices aren’t so high, having a vehicle that gets great gas mileage is an important offering. It goes a long way in gaining positive press.

There was also speculation that the production of the vehicle may have been rushed according to an analyst for IHS Automotive. In Fiat’s effort to acquire Chrysler during the recession, it stated it would produce a car that got 40 mpg on the highway. Once that goal was met, the UAW’s health care trust would transfer control of 5 percent of Chrysler’s stock to FCA. 

After that, they just wanted to get the Dart built quickly. It doesn’t mean that it was built correctly.

The control Fiat wanted coincided with delays to the nine-speed transmission they wanted to implement in the Dodge Dart. The transmission would have given the Dart better performance and fuel economy but wasn’t ready when the Dart went into production.

The Dart received suboptimal transmissions, and for the first many months was available only with a manual transmission. In the U.S. where 90 percent of vehicles sold are automatic, it was poorly planned. When automatic transmissions became available, they were six-speed automatics either made by Hyundai or Fiat. Fiat used dual-clutch technology, which isn’t overly popular in the U.S.

And there were also the complaints . . .

Discontinuing the Dodge Dart made good business sense. The automaker could turn their attention and efforts to producing trucks and SUVs and turning a profit.


Bad ECM Symptoms Dodge Dart

Your Dodge Dart’s ECM (Engine Control Module) is its brain.  Just like a human’s brain, your Dart can’t function without it. It is sometimes referred to as the ECU or PCM.  It’s all the same thing. The ECM controls and directs your entire drivetrain (unless there is a serrate transmission controller). When an ECM starts to go bad, it can cause all sorts of problems.

The ECM is your Dart’s main computer. Almost all of the essential functions of the vehicle are controlled by the ECU/ECM.

The ECM takes all of the data from the various sensors, and uses it to operate the engine in a way that is significantly more efficient than traditionally controlled engines. It uses the data from the oxygen sensors, camshaft sensor(s), mass airflow sensor, knock sensors, and much much more to make constant adjustments to the engine. It’s so vital to the operation of your Dart that it won’t run without one.

Other than the many performance advantages of an ECM over mechanically controlled engines, it also provides data that can help you diagnose what is wrong with the engine when there is a problem. While modern engines are more complicated than older engines, this data more than evens out the advantage of the older engine.

One of the problems with diagnosing the ECM, is that you depend on it to provide you with all the diagnostic data that you need to repair the engine, or engine sensors. When the ECM it self goes bad it can be extra challenging to determine that it is at fault.  Your Dart does run self diagnostic checks, so it is worth it to check if there is any error code related to the ECM/PCM currently stored.  You very well get one such as P0606 (processor fault).

Due to the immense power that the ECM has over your engine, there can be a lot of different symptoms when it goes bad. While we’ve listed some of the most common symptoms of a bad ECM below, it’s not the primary cause for any of these. Make sure that you’re checking for trouble codes and doing what you can to make sure it’s not any of the more common causes of these problems before you jump straight to the ECM.

Here are some of the most common things that happen when your Dart’s ECM is bad. 

1. Failed Self Diagnostic Cycle

When you start your Dart, the ECM will do a self diagnostic cycle. If it fails the cycle, you’ll get a check engine light. This trouble code will tell you what part of the diagnostic that it failed, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the appropriate action to take to fix it. Now, the check engine light can turn on for a lot of reasons. Almost none of them have to do with the ECM. 

2. Rough Running Engine

An engine with a bad ECM will often run rough and misfire. The misfire can come or go depending on what is going on with the ECM. It may stall, and not be able to start again, until you turn the ignition all the way off and back on again.

3. Poor Performance

As mentioned above, the ECM controls the engine timing, and air/fuel ratio. So, when it goes bad, it can knock your Dart’s air fuel ratio off.  This could lead to poor fuel economy, the previously mentioned rough running engine, backfiring, a flashing check engine light, and an engine that has no giddy-up and go.

4. Failure to Start

If the engine is failing to start entirely that can be a symptom of a bad ECM. There are certainly many things that could cause an engine not to start though. A bad fuel pump, ignition problems, clogged fuel filter, bad mass airflow sensor, and bad crank/camshaft sensors are just a few of the problems that can cause an engine to not start.

5. Poor Shifts

The transmission may have a hard time shifting, or not even be able to shift at all.

2013 Dodge Dart Problems 


The Dodge Dart problems really started in 2013, with an extremely high rate of both user and NHTSA complaints that plagued this entire model year. Not to mention, there are also 5 common issues with Dodge Cars, that can show itself in this model as well. 2013 Dodge Dart Recalls


Along with the highest number of overall complaints for any model year of the Dodge DArt, there have also been numerous recalls for this model – 5 in total. 


The first recall dealt with the inoperable parking brake, giving cause for the vehicle to roll when parked, increasing the risk of a crash when you are not even in the car. This affected nearly 50 vehicles and was apparent in 2013.


The next recall was the same year and affected nearly 13,000 cars, referring to the engine having a tendency to stall in cold temperatures. If the engine stalls while driving, whether you are moving slowly or quickly, then this can highly increase the risk of a crash. 


The third recall for the 2013 Dodge Dart refers to the air bags might not deploy properly, meaning that in the event of a crash that would otherwise facilitate the air bag deployment, the side air bangs might not actually deploy, leading to an increased risk of injury and occurring in late 2013. 


The next recall for the 2013 Dodge Dart is the transmission control module can fail, by shifting into neutral, causing a loss of motive power, and increasing the risk of a crash. This affected nearly 24,000 vehicles and was announced in August of 2015. 


Lastly, the power brake booster contamination can lengthen how long it takes to stop the vehicle, meaning you might have to brake a lot sooner than you would expect. The main user issues deal with the engine problems, with over 48 complaints. The NHTSA complaints mainly revolve around the drivetrain, the engine, and the electrical problems.

The main user complaints regarding the 2014 Dodge Dart mainly deal with the engine stalling while driving, the engine light turning on, delayed acceleration, excessive oil consumption, engine blowing up, a buzzing noise coming from the engine, and an engine fire.
