Love it, love it, love it!

I’ve ordered my groceries through Safeway’s Drive Up & Go 5 or 6 times now. I love it! I can drop items into my “cart” whenever I think of something we need, and it’s there waiting for me to pick up. I clip coupons when I drop items into my cart, so I can get the best prices. I can even “stroll” through the various virtual aisles to help me find things I might have forgotten about. There are plenty of pick up times to choose from, and I’ve never had a problem getting my preferred time. My grocery order has always been brought to my car within 5 minutes of arrival at the store. In almost all cases, I have received just what I ordered. Safeway is well organized and hands me a Pick List when they bring my groceries out to my car, so if there are any out of stock items, or any substituted items, I know exactly what those are. It doesn’t happen often; usually Safeway has what I’ve ordered.

And I’m old enough now that shopping in a big store like Safeway can be pretty tiring, so using Drive Up & Go has been a life saver. This way, I have the energy to put all my groceries away when I get home, and have the time and energy afterwards to bake cookies!

Thank you, Safeway Drive Up & Go!!

So Awesome!

Yesterday was the first time I ordered online and went to Safeway to pick up my groceries. I was pleasantly surprised that my order would be ready in 4 hours. I was blown away when I received the text that it was ready in 2 hours. I drove to the store in pouring rain, called the phone number I’d been given (and which was also prominently displayed in the designated parking spaces), told them which parking stall I was in, and out came my groceries from a very friendly grocery clerk. All I had to do was pop the trunk and my groceries were placed inside. It was so easy and truly contactless. The groceries I ordered were right on! The produce was perfect and my meat selections were beautiful. I’m usually so picky about produce and meat (which has kept me shopping in person), but not anymore. The time saved and keeping me safer during this pandemic is well worth it. I highly recommend this service!! Thank you.

Horrible service 0-Star Rating

I ordered my groceries, selected a date/time for delivery and chose the largest delivery window. That scheduled “guaranteed” delivery window came and went with no delivery, no email, text or call. I called customer service and was on hold for over 30 minutes with no answer. I emailed delivery support and still received no response. I was able to reach customer service the next day. He offered no explanation, no apology and no concern or regret. He offered to have to have my groceries re-delivered again the following day (more than 2 days after my originally scheduled “guaranteed” delivery). With hesitation, I agreed. The day of my new re-scheduled “guaranteed” delivery, I called to confirm since I had not received any text updates that I opted for. Again, I was on hold for nearly 30 minutes to reach a live person. I was guaranteed my delivery would be made and was told to call back if my delivery hadn’t been made after 3 hours into the 4 hour delivery window. Still no delivery or update so I called customer service. I was on hold for more than 30 minutes well after 9pm (closing time). No groceries, no updates, no explanation, no customer service! Still unable to reach customer support for a refund for my groceries I paid for nearly a week ago.

Uber is pushing further into the world of delivery with a major expansion of grocery delivery services this week, including in San Francisco.

In its quest to become an all-around, on-demand courier of stuff, Uber added new grocery options within Uber Eats today in 400 cities, more than doubling the number of places where the grocery delivery option is available. If you update your app in San Francisco, you'll find delivery available from Safeway, Andronico's, Walgreen's, and an array of ethnic and gourmet food shops as well like La Fromagerie and Jai Ho Indian Grocery.

As The Verge reports, the rapid expansion was made possible through a partnership with Albertson's, the parent company of Safeway, Vons, and a dozen other grocer brands. And the move shows Uber attempting to go toe to toe with the major players in this space already, Amazon and Instacart.

Uber says it has seen major growth in the grocery category since launching it one year ago, in July 2020.

"This past year has been one of incredible growth for grocery delivery,” says Raj Beri, Uber’s global head of grocery and new verticals, in a statement. “Today nearly 3 million consumers order groceries and other essentials each month through Uber and we’re just getting started. By adding thousands of beloved grocers to our selection this year, we are fast-tracking our efforts to help Americans get everything they need from their favorite supermarket, delivered to their doorsteps."

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi spoke about his hopes for the company to be everyone's go-to courier for everything under the sun in an interview last week with the New York Times' Maureen Dowd.

"Right now, I dream about pushing a button and getting a piano delivered to your home in an hour and a half,’" Khosrowshahi said. "I think that’d be really cool."

But right now, the company's previous core business of ferrying people from place-to-place is experiencing some late-pandemic stress points — most notably with a shortage of drivers that has driven the price of rides up an average of 40% nationwide. "It’s not where it needs to be right now," Khosrowshahi admits of the Uber ride-hailing business.

But he says the company is "leaning in and investing super-aggressively to bringing drivers back." He adds, "We told investors, we’re going to hurt our margins in the second quarter doing so."

These days, when you open the regular Uber app, you see options not only for ride pickups, but also for convenience-store items, food, rental cars, package delivery, and a service that lets you hire a driver by the hour to make multiple stops.

Following the acquisitions of Postmates and Drizly, Uber Eats now offers alcohol, pharmacy, and grocery delivery in addition to the usual food delivery from restaurants.

Today's grocery expansion includes the cities of Miami, Dallas, New York, San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Phoenix, and the company says it will be offering grocery delivery nationwide by the end of 2021.

Grocery giant drops in-house delivery services; report finds most shoppers still go to stores

Supermarket operator Albertsons Companies Inc., the No. 2 U.S. supermarket company whose brands also include Safeway.

Albertsons Companies has discontinued its own grocery delivery fleet in some locations, opting instead to farm out deliveries to third parties.

A separate report shows many consumers still don't use grocery-delivery services roughly a year after the COVID-19 outbreak.

The decision by the operator of Albertsons and Safeway stores affects various markets and states, effective Feb. 27. In a prepared statement, the company didn't say whether its Arizona stores were affected.

The supermarket chain said it is working to place "all impacted associates" who were working in stores, plants and distribution centers.

"We will transition that portion of our eCommerce operations to third-party logistics providers who specialize in that service," the statement said, without providing details. The company said the move "will help us create a more efficient operation."

Still, Albertsons said its eCommerce business, since the COVID-19 outbreak, "has risen to new heights and has become more strategically important."

The decision comes as researcher Invisibly released a survey indicating that takeout food and grocery delivery wasn't as widespread as many people thought.

Just 44% of the 1,253 people surveyed by Invisibly said they had ordered take-out food or grocery deliveries over the past 12 months, compared to 56% who said they hadn't. Young adults between 18 and 24 years of age were more likely than older consumers to use such services, Invisibly said. Higher-income households also were more likely to use the services.

If companies "aren't doing something on a massive scale, it gets expensive to deliver to one or two people at a time," said Dr. Don Vaughn, head of product at Invisibly in explaining why some grocery chains might tweak their programs.

Customers who have shied away from delivery services likely have done so either because they don't like the costs, from annual fees to tips, or because they don't want delivery personnel showing up at their doors during the pandemic, Vaughn said.

"A lot of people are doing it (ordering deliveries), but not the majority," he said.

Here’s all you need to know about Safeway: from the way they handle their customers, to how they deliver, how you can order from them, and even what type of food they have to offer. Safeway grocery delivery brings commodity to your door and groceries to your table. And it’s easy! First off, let’s see the three options you can choose from if you want to order from Safeway.

"safeway delivery safeway grocery delivery safeway home delivery safeway delivery cost safeway food delivery"

Safeway Delivery Options

There are three separate ways in which you can order from Safeway:

  • Order through shop.safeway.com. This means you will be picking your groceries directly from the official Safeway Home Delivery website. This option is best if you want to interact directly with the company.
  • Order through the Safeway Android app. To do this, all you need is the app that can be found in the Google Play Store. Simply go to your Android device and search for Safeway. After the app is installed, the process is pretty much the same as in the online store.
  • Order through Instacart. Just like most grocery stores across the nation, Safeway has also partnered with Instacart to bring fresh food to your door. The best thing about this is that you will be making use of Instacart’s acclaimed delivery service.

No matter which of these you may choose, the results are all in all the same. Next up we’ll be reviewing the exact process of ordering via the Safeway.com delivery website and the Safeway delivery Android app.

How to Order from Safeway Delivery

Ordering is easy – eating all of the delicious things you’ll buy is the most difficult part. It’s an easy 3-step process that only requires an internet connection:

  • Go tosafeway.comor open the Android app. Simply access the website where you will be greeted by a message stating the advantages of ordering from Safeway.
  • Pick how to shop. Next you get to pick your way of shopping, just like in a real store: by history, or by aisle. The Android app has the added bonus of allowing you to scan barcodes of previously purchased items.
  • Pick your items. Sift through the generous amount of things you can buy from Safeway. Browse the aisles, your history, or items that you have around your house and scan their barcodes. Add all of these to your shopping bag.
  • Select a delivery window. There are three delivery windows you can choose from (ordered by Safeway delivery fee from high to low): 1-hour window, 2-hour window, Green 4-hour window. More about the fees in the respective section below.
  • Select your preferred payment method and then checkout. Your delivery should arrive within the specified timeframe.

Safeway Delivery Areas

Safeway delivers to most regions in the US. With over 1,335 locations throughout the United States, it’s easy to see why the chain has such a widespread delivery system. Basically: if there’s a Safeway near you, then Safeway Delivery is just a click away.

Most importantly, it should be noted here that Safeway home delivery fees largely depend on where the order is placed from. This is because of fuel price variations and drive distance.

Safeway Delivery Time

There are three delivery windows that are available for Safeway grocery delivery. The Safeway delivery cost depends greatly on the delivery window you choose.

  • 1 Hour Delivery. The one-hour delivery is the most expensive off all time-frames but has the added convenience of being available for those with tight schedules.
  • 2 Hour Delivery. The two-hour delivery is the most reasonable. The delivery fee is decent and the time-frame is just about right. Plus you can get your items within 1 hour if the driver’s schedule isn’t that loaded.
  • 4 Hour Delivery. Also known as Green delivery, this delivery is the most environmentally-friendly and will also charge you less money. Pretty cool, eh? Saving the world from climate change and getting groceries, one Safeway food delivery at a time.

Important: for select areas in the US, Safeway also provides unattended delivery services. This means that they will leave your groceries by the door. This type of delivery is not possible for alcoholic beverages. Also, you must make sure that the driver can access your doorstep and that the neighborhood is safe.

Safeway Delivery Fees

There are a lot of fees applicable for Safeway deliveries. These fees can be avoided if you use Safeway delivery promo codes or other discount codes. Another way to avoid the extra fees is by very carefully choosing the delivery timeframe.

Additionally, all first-time users of the Safeway delivery service will get a Safeway free delivery by entering the promo code EASY7 at checkout. This promo code is subject to change according to Safeway and is only usable for the first purchase that a user makes.

Here are some other fees you should be aware of:

  • Delivery fee. This simple delivery fee has two values and which apply to purchases of less than $150 and of over $150. The first fee is of $12.95, and the second is of $9.95. All orders between $49 (minimum purchase value) and $150 will be taxed with $12.95.
  • Fuel surcharge fee. This fee applies in areas where the fuel price is over $2.75 per gallon. All excess prices will be added to the cost of your delivery.
  • Bottle deposit fees. Because glass bottles are extra fragile, delivering them will cost extra.
  • Bag fees. Bag fees are added for deliveries where you do not provide the bags.

Safeway parent outsources some grocery deliveries to gig companies

The move, coming shortly after implementation of California’s Proposition 22, raised questions about whether established companies now feel more confident in using gig workers, who are cheaper because they don’t have the same salaries, benefits and protections as employees.

Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and Instacart poured $220 million into passing Prop. 22, which keeps their California gig drivers and couriers as independent contractors, insulating the companies from legal challenges over their workers’ status.

More for you

Besides labor costs, a big savings for the supermarkets in outsourcing deliveries is that they don’t need to maintain a fleet of delivery vans.

DoorDash said the transition was unrelated to Prop. 22. Albertsons did not comment on the matter. DoorDash noted that it has already been partnering with Albertsons since 2018 and that the agreement covers a variety of states, not just California. DoorDash said it now works with Albertsons stores in over 230 locations across the U.S. and Canada.

Grocery-delivery service Instacart also fulfills orders at Safeway stores, often for rush deliveries, which Safeway’s in-house service does not provide. Its gig workers do both the shopping and delivering. For DoorDash deliveries, Albertsons store employees will continue to shop and pack orders, DoorDash said.

“DoorDash has always supported local economies, and as e-commerce and delivery have become even more important for many businesses during these challenging times, we remain committed to helping brick-and-mortar local merchants reach consumers with the best of their neighborhood,” the San Francisco company said in a statement.

DoorDash, which went public last month, is seeking to diversify beyond its core restaurant-meal deliveries with agreements with groceries, drugstores and other merchants. The company said it’s better equipped than traditional retailers to provide on-demand deliveries within an hour or two.

Some experts on the gig economy said they thought Prop. 22 was a factor.

“I think it really symbolizes the grocery stores’ faith in the gig model,” said Veena Dubal, a UC Hastings law professor. “With Prop. 22 having passed and the gig companies quite clear that they are going to push for similar legislation across the country, the grocery companies don’t have to be fearful of perhaps being found liable as joint employers, at least in California.”

Union leaders had similar views.

“Once Prop. 22 passed, the penny pinchers and number crunchers inside Albertsons did the calculations and said, ‘We can do this and get to profitability in our delivery system quicker’” without fear of lawsuits, said Jim Araby, director of strategic campaigns for Local 5 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, which covers Northern California.

Safeway home deliveries in the greater Bay Area, from Santa Cruz to Santa Rosa, are handled by about 250 drivers now represented by Local 5. They will vote on a three-year contract with the grocer on Friday, according to Araby, who is optimistic it will be ratified.

Those drivers, like other unionized home-delivery drivers at Albertsons and Safeway, will continue in their jobs, although gig companies like DoorDash and Instacart can also handle home deliveries in the unionized markets, Araby said.

“We went back and forth in negotiations over the use of third-party drivers,” he said. “We have language in our contract that we believe protects our drivers’ access to hours and benefits.”

For cost-conscious consumers, Safeway’s own deliveries are cheaper, costing $3.95 to $5.95, while one-hour deliveries from third parties are $9.95, according to Safeway’s delivery website.

Albertsons stores also offer curbside grocery pickups, called DriveUp & Go, in which its employees fulfill orders and then load them into customer’s cars.

Grocery delivery is not a lucrative business. While shelter-in-place orders impelled many consumers to switch to online food deliveries, the jury is still out on how profitable those are — if at all.

“If there’s anything the pandemic has taught us, it’s that delivery and curbside need to move to a more permanent operation,” said Phil Lampert, a food industry expert, and editor of Supermarket Guru.

Online operations for groceries are complex, and have a long history of experimentation and failure.

Safeway introduced online groceries in the Bay Area in 2002, in the wake of the high-profile failure of Webvan, a startup that fulfilled orders directly from vast and expensive warehouses. It would take a decade before substantial online competition arose in the form of Instacart, whose shoppers picked up orders from stores.

In 2017, Amazon purchased Whole Foods, transforming the sector and jolting established players like Albertsons, which bought Safeway in 2015. Amazon ended Instacart’s partnership with Whole Foods in 2018, taking deliveries in-house.

Most grocers, including Amazon with Whole Foods, fulfill orders from stores rather than centralized fulfillment warehouses, which are designed to restock store shelves, not cater to individual consumers. Amazon has started to experiment with stores dedicated to online orders.

Customers and store workers alike have complained about floods of online-order shoppers in aisles as the pandemic has boosted demand for deliveries.

If you live near a Safeway, Acme, Carrs or any other store owned by the conglomerate Albertsons Co., you can now get groceries delivered via DoorDash to your home in under an hour. DoorDash said Monday that customers across the US can use the home delivery service app to place orders from almost 2,000 stores for more than 40,000 grocery items, including flowers and fresh food, depending on the store.

There's no minimum amount you need to spend to qualify for delivery, though delivery is free for DashPass members who spend at least $25 on Albertsons groceries. All you have to do is place an order through the DoorDash marketplace app. Some customers can also order their groceries through the local Albertsons website for same-day delivery via DoorDash Drive.

From now through June 30, you can save 40% on your first order by using the code GROCERY.

Since DoorDash began offering grocery delivery in August 2020, competitors have followed suit: Amazon now delivers groceries to more than 5,000 cities, while Instacart has 30-minute grocery deliveries across 15 cities. Most recently, Uber teamed up with Walgreens last week for same-day delivery services.
