Even in our increasingly wireless world, iPhone owners still have to plug in to their computers every now and then. Whether it's for backups, quick music or video transfers, or other reasons, sometimes there's no way around it. First, you need to dig out a Lightning cable, then you have to remember how to connect to iTunes.

But this time, there's something wrong. Whether it's iTunes not recognizing iPhone connections at all or you're getting a cryptic "0xE" error, you just can't get iTunes to work. While this can be a tough problem to solve, the fix is often surprisingly easy. We're here to help.

1. iPhone Won't Connect to iTunes? Start Here

There are a few extremely simple factors to check before you move on to any other solutions. First, make sure that your iOS device is unlocked and on the Home screen. If it wasn't in the first place, unplug it, then plug it back in. Also, make sure the cable is fully inserted into both your iPhone and computer.

Another simple fix is to restart your iPhone. This is a basic step, but works for a number of issues.

2. Review Trust Issues

Occasionally, when you plug your iPhone into a computer, you'll see a prompt on the home screen asking if you trust the computer. If you don't select Trust, you'll have trouble with your iPhone not showing up in iTunes.

If you accidentally selected Don't Trust in the past, don't worry---there's a way to fix that. On your iPhone, open Settings, then go to General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy.

After the installer runs, try opening iTunes and hopefully, it will recognize your iPhone. If you still have issues with iTunes not recognizing iPhone connections, you might try completely uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

What to do when your iPhone isn’t showing up in iTunes

Connecting your iPhone to iTunes through a Mac or PC is an essential part of digital housekeeping. Whether you want to update your iPhone, sync it with your computer, or transfer some media onto it, connecting it to iTunes is often the best — or sometimes the only — option.

However, you may sometimes find that your iPhone doesn’t show up in iTunes. You connect the iPhone to your computer via your USB cable, but it doesn’t appear anywhere on your computer, and iTunes doesn’t seem to recognize it. In this article, we explain what to do in such cases, covering the five most useful solutions. Usually, the problem can be solved by simple restarts or updates, but in some cases, you may need to buy new cables or even contact Apple Support.

What to do when your iPhone isn’t showing up in iTunes

Try a different USB cable or USB port

The simplest thing you can do when your iPhone isn’t showing in iTunes is to try a different USB cable or USB port. Sometimes, faulty hardware can be the reason why you can’t connect properly. So, if your computer has another USB port, try that one instead. Likewise, if you have another USB cable for your iPhone, try that.

Also, it’s worth trying a different computer if a different USB cable or port doesn’t work. If a different computer does detect your iPhone, then you know that the problem is most likely with your computer.

If your iPhone still isn’t showing in iTunes, the next thing you can try is restarting your iPhone and then your computer. This is an obvious step, but it often works in such cases because restarts flush out your device’s RAM, which handles short-term data and tasks. For whatever reason, such data may be interfering with how your iPhone or computer is working. It’s always worth a try.

Turn on and unlock your iPhone

It may go without saying, but you need to have your iPhone turned on and unlocked before it will show in iTunes.

One other simple thing to make sure you do is tap Trust when the “Trust This Computer?” notification pops up on your iPhone. Without doing this, iTunes won’t be able to detect your iPhone, since the latter will refuse to connect to your computer.

Also, you may have inadvertently tapped Don’t Trust at one point in time. Doing this means your iPhone never sends data to your computer, and it might be the reason why your iPhone isn’t showing in iTunes. If you suspect this to be the case, you can change your settings for trusted computers. To do this, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy.

If your iPhone still isn’t showing in iTunes, you should begin making sure everything is completely updated. If possible, update your iPhone, update iTunes, and update your computer’s OS (whether MacOS or Windows).

To update your Mac, you need to open System Preferences and then click Software Update. To update your Windows PC, you need to click the Start button, and then you go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

To update iTunes on a Mac, you need to open the App Store and then click Updates. If an iTunes update is available, click on it.

To update iTunes on a Windows PC, you need to open iTunes and then go to Help > Check for Updates.

Update the iPhone driver in Windows PC

If you’re a Windows user, one thing you can try is updating your iPhone’s driver software. If you do this frequently, your iPhone will start showing in iTunes. We’ve outlined how to do this below if you used the Microsoft Store to download iTunes.

Step 1: Disconnect your iPhone from your PC. Then, unlock your iPhone and reconnect it to the PC using your USB cable.

Step 2: Right-click the Start button, then select Device Manager. Next, click Portable Devices so that it expands.

Step 3: Right-click on Apple iPhone (or whatever your PC may call your iPhone). Click Update Driver. Lastly, choose Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software.

Doing this will install new driver software for your iPhone. After it has installed, open iTunes. It should be able to detect your iPhone now.

Alternatively, if you downloaded iTunes from Apple’s website rather than from the Microsoft Store, you should do the following to update your iPhone driver:

Step 1: Connect your iPhone via USB cable to your PC. Unlock it.

Step 2: Press the Windows + R keys simultaneously, which opens the Run command. In the Run window, enter the following:

Step 3: Click OK. Right-click on either Usbaapl64.inf or Usbaapl.inf. Next, click Install. Lastly, disconnect your iPhone, restart your PC, and reconnect your iPhone before opening iTunes.

Update the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver in Windows PC

If none of these steps work, try updating the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver on Windows. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Press the Windows + R keys simultaneously, which opens the Run command. In the Run window, enter the following: devmgmt.msc

Step 2: Click OK. Next, click on Universal Serial Bus controllers to expand its sub-menu, as shown in the screenshot below. Right-click on Apple Mobile Device USB Driver and then click Update driver to check for a newer version.

If you see an option for a more recent version, click to download it. Once the download is complete, connect your iPhone again and check to see if it’s showing up.

Go to Apple Support

Let’s say you’ve tried all these troubleshooting options and tried connecting to a different computer, and you’re still coming up with nothing. Unfortunately, that probably means you’re facing a hardware problem. In this case, the only thing left to do is contacting Apple Support to see what they can do.

You might need to schedule an appointment at the nearest Apple Store so they can take a closer look.

Whatever the source of the issue, there are some easy troubleshooting steps with a high chance of getting an iPhone and iTunes back to communicating.

How to Fix It When iTunes Won't Recognize Your iPhone

Many times, iPhone-to-iTunes connectivity problems stem from issues you can easily fix. Try each troubleshooting step to see if it solves the problem. If it doesn't, move on to the next suggestion.

  1. Make sure iTunes is installed on the computer. If you don't have iTunes, the program can't recognize the device. It's easy to install iTunes (or its successor, Apple Music) on a Mac or Windows PC.

  2. Check the USB cable. A faulty USB cable could cause the iPhone-to-iTunes connection issue. Make sure the USB cable is in good condition. If it's frayed or cut, use a different USB cable and see if this solves the problem.

    Use a genuine Apple USB cable. USB cables made by other companies may not trigger a connection between the devices.

  3. Check the iPhone's port. Sometimes, debris buildup causes an iPhone port to fail. Use a dry, anti-static brush or toothbrush to clean it out gently. Then, connect again and see if this fixes the issue.

  4. Check the USB port on the computer. Start by unplugging all USB devices from the computer. Move the iPhone's cable to another port and reconnect. If this works, it's an issue with that specific port, and you'll need to repair it.

    If you use an external USB device for the cables, disconnect it and connect the iPhone's cable directly to the computer. It might be a connection issue between the USB device and the computer.

  5. Restart the iPhone. A small software glitch could cause a faulty connection. Restart the device and connect again.

  6. Restart the computer. A mild software bug or malfunction may cause iTunes to malfunction. Turn off the computer and let it sit for a few minutes before turning it back on again.

  7. Make sure the iOS device is unlocked and on the Home screen. Connect the device, immediately unlock it, and ensure it's on the Home screen. Then connect your iPhone to iTunes.

    After you unlock the iPhone, leave it unlocked for a few minutes before trying to connect.

  8. Download the latest version of iTunes. An old version of iTunes may not recognize your iPhone. Update iTunes and then attempt to connect the iPhone again.

  9. Update operating system software. Update Windows or macOS and see if this takes care of any software glitches or hidden bugs that caused the iPhone-to-iTunes connection problem.

  10. Make sure to tap Trust This Computer. If you're connecting your iPhone to your computer for the first time, you should see the Trust This Computer alert on the Home screen. When you see this alert, unlock the device and tap it immediately to designate the computer as a trusted device.

    Did you accidentally tap Don't Trust? There's a fix. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. Once you connect your iPhone, you'll see the pop-up again.

  11. Check the System Report. This only applies if you use a Mac. Connect the iPhone and check the System Report, which shows active devices. If your iPhone is displayed, but you can't connect, you might be experiencing a software issue.

  12. Disable or uninstall security software. If you use a Mac and the iPhone was listed in the System Report, disable or uninstall antivirus software and other security programs one at a time. See if any program causes the problem.

    Third-party antivirus software can block external USB devices, such as the cable connecting an iPhone to a computer. This helps protect computer data in the event an unknown USB connects to the device.

  13. Reinstall the Apple Mobile Device USB driver. This applies only to Windows PCs. This driver tells the PC what to do with Apple devices. When it malfunctions, it doesn't read the device correctly. Reinstall the driver and see if this solves the problem.

  14. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes. A malfunction deep within iTunes can sometimes be resolved by uninstalling and reinstalling the software.

    You don't lose your music and other content by uninstalling iTunes. However, if you're concerned, create an iTunes backup before you move forward.

  15. Reach out to Apple Support. The Apple iTunes support website offers many helpful features, including a searchable knowledge base and the ability to ask the community a question. You can also set up an appointment at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store.

The iPhone/iPad/iPod is Still Not Detected, Now What?

If the iPhone, iPad, or iPod is still not recognized by iTunes, the next thing you should do is delete iTunes and reinstall it with a fresh version from Apple. That process is going to be different whether the computer is a Mac or Windows PC.

Reboot and try again, it should be detected now.

For iPhone / iPad Not Being Detected in Windows, Update iPhone Driver

For Windows PC users whose iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is not being found or detected by iTunes or the computer, you can update the iOS Device Driver like so:

  1. Go to the Device Manager in Windows, and locate “Apple iPhone” under portable devices section
  2. Right click on the ‘Apple iPhone’ and choose “Update software”
  3. Now click “Browse on my computer”
  4. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple… and choose the folder called “Drivers”

The updated driver will install and update and iTunes should now detect the iPhone, ipad, or iPod touch as intended.

That driver approach is for Windows PC, for Mac there is no driver to update in Mac OS X aside from iTunes and general Mac OS X system software, which is updated from  Apple menu > App Store > Updates.

iTunes & iPhone Still Not Working Together?

If you’ve done all the troubleshooting tricks above and the iOS device is still not detected, try connecting the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to a different computer and see if it’s identified. This can help rule out if the problem is with the original computer, or if it’s a problem with the iOS device itself. If it’s connected to another computer and still won’t be recognized, there could be a problem with the physical connector port on the iOS device itself, or some other hardware related issue, and you’ll probably want to call Apple to sort it out. Before doing so, be sure to back up the device manually with iCloud, since iCloud will be able to backup important data in iOS even if the device can’t connect to a computer.
