Synopsis

Barrels, Drums, Storage & More is a storage mod by Funwayguy. It adds metal and wooden barrels, crates, and a shipping container, along with various upgrades to customize them.

Overview

  • Wooden Crate: a box that can hold 64 stacks of one item type by default. Right click to add the items you are holding to the crate. The first item you add to the crate will be visible on the front of the crate, and will be the only item the crate can store. Once there is something inside your crate, right click with an empty hand to add all of the items in your inventory. Left click to take one stack of items out of the crate. Shift left click to remove one item from the crate. The wooden crate can burn and is upgradeable to hold up to 1024 stacks of items. The crate keeps its items inside of it even when broken, unlike a chest.
  • Metal Crate: exactly the same as the wooden crate (above) except does not burn, and is upgradeable to hold up to 32768 stacks of items.
  • Wooden Barrel: a barrel which has the same functionality as wooden crates and additionally can hold up to 64 buckets of non-hot liquid. Right click with a bucket of liquid to add it to the barrel and right click with an empty bucket to take some liquid out of the barrel. Upgradeable to hold up to 1024 buckets of non-hot liquid.
  • Metal Drum: exactly the same as the wooden barrel (above) except does not burn, and is upgradeable to hold up to 32768 buckets of liquid. This now includes hot liquids like lava.
  • Shipping Container: a 2x2 structure that can hold up to 27 wooden crates, metal crates, wooden barrels, or metal drums. Hooking up a storage network (AE2, Simple Storage Networks, etc.) to the shipping container allows it to access all of the containers inside and their items.
  • Color Tool: right click on a metal crate, metal drum, or shipping container to change its color. You can select which section of the block you are coloring with the numbers in the top left.
  • Crate Key: right click on a wooden crate, metal crate, wooden barrel, or metal drum to lock it. While locked, crates and barrels with nothing in them cannot have items put into them. Crates and barrels with an item in them cannot have their item changed while locked, even when you take all of the items out of the container.
  • Upgrade Capacity x64: increases the capacity of a container by 64 stacks
  • Upgrade Capacity x256: increases the capacity of a container by 256 stacks
  • Upgrade Capacity x1024: increases the capacity of a container by 1024 stacks
  • Upgrade Capacity x4096: increases the capacity of a container by 4096 stacks
  • Upgrade Capacity Creative: changes a container so that once you put any item into it, you can take an infinite number of that item out of it.
  • Upgrade Ore Dictionary: right click on a wooden crate, metal crate, wooden barrel, or metal drum to upgrade. Containers with this upgrade can accept all blocks with the same ore dictionary. For example, Minecraft leaves (oak, spruce, birch, etc.) all have the same ore dictionary. This means you can store all leaf types in a single container with this upgrade. Despite being able to store any blocks with the same ore dictionary, all blocks put into that container will turn into whichever block enters the container first. For example, you can put a single jungle leaf into a barrel with this upgrade, and then put 20 stacks of birch leaves into the barrel as well. The barrel will now have 20 stacks of jungle leaves in it.
  • Upgrade Void Overflow: right click on a wooden crate, metal crate, wooden barrel, or metal drum to upgrade. Containers with this upgrade will automatically delete any items that are inserted once the container is full.
  • Uninstall Upgrades: right click on a wooden crate, metal crate, wooden barrel, or metal drum to remove all upgrades you have added to it. The upgrades that are removed will appear back in your inventory.

Other Notes

Breaking Containers in Creative:

In creative you have to shift left click to destroy crates and barrels because left clicking is reserved for taking items out of containers. Because of this, you cannot take single items out of containers in creative (shift left click usually).

Using Upgrade Ore Dictionary To Your Advantage:

As mentioned above, using an upgrade ore dictionary will cause a container to accept any blocks of the same ore dictionary (the ore dictionary of an item can be seen by holding shift while hovering your mouse over it). This can potentially be very useful. For example, if you type logWood into your creative inventory you can see every single block that has the ore dictionary “logWood”. This includes every variant of vanilla wood, menril wood, twilight oak wood, and every single sky orchards variant of wood. What this means is, any wood from the list can be turned into any other wood from the list. In my testing, I have found some specific instances which do not work (saplings for example). I assume that these changes were made for balance reasons (oak sapling to ardite sapling). You will have to do your own testing to determine what works and what does not.

This is a Sci-Fi storage crate that was created in 3ds Max, and textured in Substance Painter. I tried to follow the reference image as closely as possible.

For this asset I wanted to experiment with a Face-Weighted Normals workflow, so I only created a low-poly model. Various different alpha brushes were created in Photoshop to assist with the painting & texturing.

I am quite satisfied with how this crate turned out. Leave a comment and let me know what you think! :)

Tool Cart with recycled plastic crates (Workshop Organization)

There are plenty of storage unit types in Unturned to keep your belongings safe from other players, including crates. Crated can be made of different types of wood, such as birch, maple, and pine, and have a varying storage capacity. If you’d like to know how to craft a crate, we’re here to help.

How to Make a Crate in Unturned

In this guide, we’ll explain how to craft a crate in Unturned. Additionally, we’ll provide instructions to make other types of units, and answer some of the most popular questions related to storage in the game.

How to Make a Crate in Unturned

A regular birch crate in Unturned can be used to store your belongings – it has a 24 slot capacity. Here’s how to make a birch crate in the game:

  1. Collect some birch sticks and logs by chopping trees. From one tree, you get six logs and two to six sticks. For one crate, a tree should be enough.
  2. Make sure you have a saw.
  3. Visit your inventory and click “Crafting”.
  4. Press and hold the “Ctrl” key and click on items you’re going to use for crafting.
  5. Click “Craft All” and select the item you’d like to craft from the menu on the right.
  6. From birch logs and a saw, craft seven birch planks. You can create three planks from one log, thus you need three logs.
  7. From seven birch planks and three birch sticks, craft a birch crate.
  8. Place your crate anywhere you wish to store your belongings.

How to Make a Wooden Crate in Unturned

There are three types of wooden crates in Unturned – birch, maple, and pine. The birch crate can only hold up to 24 slots, while the maple crate holds 28 slots and pine – 32 slots. Here’s how to craft a maple crate:

  1. Collect some maple sticks and logs by chopping up maple trees. One tree should do the trick.
  2. Make sure you have a saw.
  3. Visit your inventory and click “Crafting.”
  4. Press and hold the “Ctrl” key and click on items you’re going to use for crafting.
  5. Click “Craft All” and select the item you’d like to craft from the menu on the right.
  6. From maple logs and a saw, craft seven maple planks.
  7. From seven maple planks and three maple sticks, craft a maple crate.
  8. Place your crate anywhere you wish to store your belongings.

If you’d like to create a pine crate, here’s how to do that:

  1. Collect some pine sticks and logs by chopping up pine trees. One tree should be sufficient.
  2. Make sure you have a saw.
  3. Go to your inventory and click “Crafting.”
  4. Press and hold the “Ctrl” key and click on items you’re going to use for crafting.
  5. Select “Craft All” and choose the item you’d like to craft from the menu on the right.
  6. From pine logs and a saw, craft seven pine planks.
  7. From seven pine planks and three pine sticks, craft a pine crate.
  8. Place your crate anywhere you wish to store your belongings.

How to Make a Metal Crate in Unturned

You can’t create a metal crate in Unturned, but you can craft a locker. It’s more secure than a regular crate and has a capacity of 36 slots. To craft a locker, follow the instructions below:

  1. Collect some scrap metal. You need at least eight pieces.
  2. Make sure you have a blowtorch. It can be found at gas stations and garages.
  3. Go to your inventory and click “Crafting.”
  4. Press and hold the “Ctrl” key and click on items you’re going to use for crafting.
  5. Click “Craft All” and select the item you’d like to craft from the menu on the right.
  6. Craft three metal sheets from six pieces of scrap metal.
  7. Craft three metal bars from scrap metal using a blowtorch. You can craft two bars from one piece of scrap metal.
  8. From three metal sheets, three metal bars, and a blowtorch, create a metal locker.

How to Make a Storage Crate in Unturned

You can store your items in Unturned in various storage units, including crates. To craft a crate, follow the instructions below:

  1. Collect some sticks and logs by chopping up trees. You can only craft a crate from logs and sticks of the same tree type.
  2. Make sure you have a saw.
  3. Visit your inventory and click “Crafting.”
  4. Press and hold the “Ctrl” key and click on items you’re going to use for crafting.

  7. From nine birch planks and five birch sticks, craft a birch wardrobe.
  8. Place your wardrobe anywhere you wish to store your belongings.

Frequently Asked Questions

In this section, we’ll answer some of the most common questions related to storage units in Unturned.

What Is the Biggest Storage Unit in Unturned?

The biggest storage unit in Unturned is a metal wardrobe. To craft it, collect some scrap metal and make sure you have a blowtorch. If you don’t, head on to the nearest gas station or garage – you may find some there.

Then, go to your inventory and select “Crafting”. Create four metal sheets and four metal bars from scrap metal. Assemble them to craft a wardrobe that can hold up to 42 slots.

How Do You Make Storage in Unturned?

Depending on the type of storage, you can use different materials to craft it. The main categories are crates, counters, wardrobes, trophy cases, rifle racks, and lockers. You can also craft a cooler and a fridge.

Generally, to craft a wooden storage unit, you need only wooden sticks and planks. Units from different types of trees have different storage capacities. For metal storage units, most often you have to use metal sheets and bars. Sometimes you may need additional items, such as a saw or a blowtorch.

How Do I Craft a Trophy Case in Unturned?

Trophy cases allow you to showcase your trophies instead of hiding them in a solid unit. They can be made of wood or metal. To craft a wooden trophy case, use five planks and two sticks. For a metal trophy case, you need two metal sheets and two metal bars.

Trophy cases aren’t very efficient though – they use the same amount of materials as crates, but only hold up to ten slots. However, hardly anyone would complain about that, as the main purpose of this unit is to hold valuable items in a safe and aesthetically pleasing way.

Choose the Best Storage

Hopefully, with the help of our guide, you can now craft a crate from any material you like to store your belongings. Be aware, though – some storage units are better suitable for specific items than others. Crates can be accessed by any player, so they aren’t the best option to store valuable items. If you wish to showcase your weapons and trophies, use trophy cases and rifle racks that can be only opened by you.
