The Steel wheels paint up easy. I did the look with satin black in center, bright silver on outside edges and it looked good. I think it made the car look more like a "real" Porsche. On my CMC speedster project, found an old set of what is called Rivera wheels, often also used on the 's, after market ones, from EMPI and others. I painted these satin black in the center and left the polished aluminum on the outer rim. These were black with alum. square sections and the polished outer rim, but with corrosion from years someone had them outside, I was able to restore the polished outer rims, like on the old Porsche and sanded and painted the inside of the wheels and center section satin black, which is somewhat of a semi-flat black. Then used the EMPI screw in wheel studs with chrome lug nuts and chrome plastic center caps. Looks good for $ spent on the wheel. I had the chrome lug nuts from past VW projects. About as cheap as I can get for somewhat an old Porsche look. With the open flat spokes, one can see the disc brake parts, for more details. I have disc on front, drums on rear. I left the calipers the color them came with , from the manufacturer as hard to get paint to stay on them, even the disc brake paint, not very good. On the drums, as you can see them, through the flat spokes, I will paint them with high heat Red. Car body is Red. So, good contrast with black, chrome and red painted drums on the wheel selection. I wanted Chrome four bolt Stock VW wheels, but cannot find them. Having wheels chrome plated is out of my budget.
VW made both 4½" and 5½" wide "Sports" wheels in the `70s which have the same spoked center as the steel rims; the slots are coined slightly differently at the edges but are very close to the Porsche (close enough that most people wouldn't notice).
5½" ET40 will NOT fit the front of a Super with stock-diameter coil springs (unless spacers are employed) - they require the 5½" ET26 or the 4½" ET With smaller-diameter springs, the 5½" ET34, 4½" ET41, or possibly even the Porsche 5½" ET40 should fit.
If you're thinking of the alloy "2-liter" Porsche rim, I don't know the offset (ET number) off the top of my head but it's probably close to the ET40 of the steel rims. There are aftermarket repops (EMPI) which may have less backspace than the genuine Porsche - I've seen the backspace of the EMPIs claimed as " and 4", while the stock Porsche is more like 4½" or 4¾".

I once had a set of the steel rims on a Squareback, where they fit nicely with no spacers. I used aftermarket trim rings on them like this:
