US Mint product image Limited Edition Silver Proof Set

This product continues the U.S. Mint&#;s annual tradition of issuing a premier silver set for coin collectors, which is popular, in large part, because of its presentation packaging.

Collectors also favor the set because each of its San Francisco-struck coins is minted in silver. The set marks the second year in which they are composed of % silver instead of 90% silver.

The product also has a relatively low limit of 50, units, adding for some to its appeal.

At $, this year finds the set at a much higher price than past releases. For example, last year&#;s set was sold for $ and the one for was $

Popularity of Sets

Silver Proof Sets are core, flagship U.S. Mint products. Several hundred thousand of them are sold each year.

About Proof Sets

An Important Disclaimer on U.S. Proof & Mint Sets pricing:
Proof sets are a very complicated part of the wholesale coin market. In many cases, dealers will trade proof sets between % back of the CDN Greysheet bids.

There are several reasons for this. The market makers establishing these bids insist on buying large quantities of specific issues at once, so dealers selling groups of various issues should expect to settle for a discount from these levels.

Also, the condition of the original packaging is critical. Values listed here for are for proof and mint sets with excellent packaging, for retail re-sale. Any writing, frayed edges, torn envelopes, discolored from improper storage or other issues are typically rejected by market makers, so discount accordingly.

Prices for the are based on PRquality levels. date are for sets in the original government packaging. Individual graded single coins can be found with their respective series.

Mint set prices are for sets in original government packaging. are Treasury-issued double sets (2 of each coin). to date are single sets of government issues.

The United States Mint has issued proof coinage since the early 19th century, though for the first years or so, production of proof coinage was relatively sporadic, and for some series many years passed without the issuance of a single proof specimen. This changed in , when the United States Mint began issuing proof sets on an annual basis, with few exceptions. Historically, proof coins were minted at the Philadelphia, but this changed in when production of proof sets was moved to the San Francisco Mint, which places its ?S? mintmark on proof coins. Proof sets generally include at least one example of each issue ranging in denomination from one-cent through half dollar, with the one-dollar coin also included during periods when a dollar coin has been part of the regular production lineup. With the introduction of various new coin series in recent years, such as the 50 State Quarters, Presidential $1 coin, and others, the size of proof sets has grown from five or six coins to 10 or more.

Proof sets made from through mid consist of individual proof coins in cellophane envelopes that are stapled together in a bundle and packaged in a cardboard box stuffed with tissue. In mid , proof sets were assembled in a single cellophane pack shipped to collectors in a manila envelope. Proof sets still housed in their original cellophane packaging, which was used by the United States Mint until , are becoming scarcer over time as collectors break these sets apart to harvest the coins as singles for album-based sets or for submitting coins to third-party graders. Many pre proof sets have also been assembled into aftermarket plastic cases. Following a brief hiatus in proof set production at the United States Mint from through , proof sets were once again offered beginning in and have since been assembled in rigid plastic lenses that are accompanied with outer cardboard sleeves and boxes. Certificates of authenticity have been issued with proof sets since the mid s.

Across the board, proof sets with choice coins enjoy premiums. Cameo proofs were relatively scarce before and thus sets predating that period which contain cameo proof coins are also worth premiums above typical market values. All pre proof sets in clean, original packaging generally trade at higher levels than for proof sets that have been assembled in aftermarket holders.

Modern U.S. Proof Set Values and Prices

The U.S. Mint made proof sets from through today. Over time the average coin values based upon current market conditions have fluctuated very little. When buying or selling your United States, proof sets make sure all original U.S. Mint packaging, boxes and all original documents and Certificates of Authenticity (COA) are included. The sets should be free from damage, and the coins must have never been circulated.

What Is a United States Proof Set?

The United States Mint began producing proof coins in the early s. These were special coins manufactured with extra care that imparted a special finish on the surface of the coin and then sold them to coin collectors at The U.S. Mint offices in Philadelphia. Not every coin produced for circulation has a Proof counterpart. As time evolved, coin collectors requested one proof coin of every type of coin minted. In The U.S. Mint started assembling sets of every coin minted and selling them directly to collectors. Additionally, you could order these coins through the mail.

As time progressed, the mint also started making commemorative coins. The Mint produced these coins in business strike and proof finishes. A variety of sets that combined different denominations of commemorative coins or different finishes were made available to collectors. Currently, you can order your proof coins directly from The United States Mint website.

Key Dates, Rarities, and Varieties

The following proof sets, in any condition, are worth considerable more than common proof sets. As such, these coins are frequently counterfeit or altered from common coins. Therefore, before you start celebrating your early retirement with your newfound fortune, have the coins authenticated by a reputable coin dealer or third-party grading service.

  • All proof sets dated  - . Be careful when purchasing these sets. They were not packaged like the modern-day Proof Sets that come in hard plastic cases. Many of these early proof sets were shipped in paper or cellophane envelopes. The acids in these materials may have reacted with the coins and they may be damaged. Make sure you open and inspect any early proof set before purchasing.
  • S No S Jefferson 5-cent (the Jefferson nickel is missing the mintmark "S" on the obverse)
  • S Clear S (all mintmarks on all coins have a very clear and flat mintmark)
  • S No S Lincoln cent (the Lincoln penny is missing the mintmark "S" on the obverse below the date)

Modern U.S. Proof Set Coin Values

The buy price is what you can expect to pay to a dealer when you purchase the coin. The sell value is what you can anticipate a dealer will pay to you if you sell the coin. These are approximate retail prices and wholesale values. The actual offer you receive from a particular coin dealer will vary depending on the condition of the set and some other factors that determine its worth.
