Program DescriptionThe Primary Care Family Nurse Practitionerconcentration prepares primary health care providers for the community and ambulatory setting. It is designed to prepare the NP to exercise independent judgment in assessment, supervision, and management of the primary health care needs of the individual in consultation and collaboration with primary-care physicians.
The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program at the Loma Linda University, School of Nursing, prepares students to provide quality primary health care services to individuals from infancy through adulthood. We promote whole-person care throughout our nursing programs. This type of care gives practitioners a unique opportunity to develop long-term relationships with patients. As an FNP you are positioned to become an expert in each patient’s health history, and health background. Providing care throughout each individual’s life span will help you make the best healthcare recommendations possible. With an emphasis on preventative care, many Family Nurse Practitioners practice primarily in ambulatory care settings, and make significant contributions to underserved populations.
The Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioner BS to DNP program is 3 years and 9 months full-time. Part-time option is also available. The program is offered in a hybrid format.
The program is divided into 4 parts:
1- Core Courses: Most core courses are hybrid and meet 1 of 2 times for 3 to 6 hours during Seminar week in the middle of the Quarter.
2- Concentration Courses: Pharmacology and Pathophysiology meet only once during seminar week. Advanced Health Assessment has 4 meetings for testing and skills each quarter.
3- Clinical Experience: All students in the NP Clinical tracks complete DNP Practice hours and additional clinical hours. All NP students will complete over 1, combined clinical and DNP Practice hours. Clinical rotations, sites and preceptors are arranged by the Graduate Program.
4- DNP Project: The DNP Project may be completed at the workplace if approved by the DNP Chair and DNP Program Director once an affiliation agreement for the project is signed.
