Ford Racing introduced its drag-race-ready Cobra Jet Mustang in 2008 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Cobra Jet’s win at the 1968 NHRA Winternationals, then continued to offer the purpose-built Mustang over subsequent years. This Cobra Jet is one of only 50 sold by Ford Racing for the 2014 model year. White with a black interior, the serialized factory race car started life as a lightweight 2014 Mustang, body-in-white before completion in competition trim at Watson Racing. Priced new at $97,990 under Ford Racing part-number M-FR500-CJ, the off-road-only Cobra Jet Mustangs were intended for NHRA Stock and Super Stock or NMRA Renegade classes. The 2014 versions were capable of 8-second quarter-mile ETs right from the factory thanks to their 5.0L Ti-VCT engine, 3-speed race transmission prepared by Joel’s on Joy, and Strange Engineering 9-inch rear end with 4.88:1 gears. To withstand the boost from the 2.9L Whipple supercharger, the short-block was strengthened with a forged crankshaft, Manley H-beam connecting rods and Mahle forged pistons. With custom-ground cams and improved breathing from CNC-ported heads, estimated output for the supercharged 5.0L was 527 HP. Recognizing that many buyers would add the Cobra Jet to collections, each one came with its build number on the rear of the car. This 2014 Cobra Jet is equipped with its Watson Racing-installed equipment, including race-spec safety cage, Recaro FIA race seats, Aeromotive fuel system, trunk-mounted battery, rear parachute mount and Goodyear drag slicks on Weld Racing wheels. Per its factory build, the suspension geometry is engineered for optimum 60-foot times with adjustable struts and shocks, 3-link rear suspension, adjustable panhard bar and deleted front sway bar. This special competition vehicle has the optional Cobra Jet graphics and wheelie bars. The Mustang has never been raced or made a pass on the drag strip, and will be sold on a bill of sale.

2014 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Details Announced

Last October, Ford showed a new twin-turbo version of its drag-strip-only Mustang Cobra Jet at SEMA, and spent a fair amount of time talking up the advantages of multiple turbos versus a single 2.9-liter supercharger.

To start with, turbochargers don’t scavenge power off the engine, since their turbines are spun by escaping exhaust gasses. Superchargers, on the other hand, are belt-driven from the engine, requiring significant horsepower to operate. In the case of the 2013 Mustang Cobra Jet, its 2.9-liter blower can take up to 100 horsepower to spin.

That seemed like a pretty clear indication that Ford was going the twin-turbo route for its next Mustang Cobra Jet. Imagine our surprise, then, when Ford handed us the details on its 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet, powered by the same 2.9-liter supercharger-equipped 5.0-liter V-8 as in 2013.

In fact, the primary differences between the years are new colors (including Gotta Have-It Green and flat black, a non-factory color), a new three-speed transmission with an SFI-approved housing and parachute mounts for cars built to exceed 150 mph.

As before, the 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet will be for off-road (and on-track) use only, and it will be built in a quantity of just 50 units (making it even rarer than the 69-unit COPO Camaro). Its lightened body structure is designed for optimum weight distribution, and it sports Recaro race seats and a rollcage designed using finite element analysis.

Even the Ford Racing suspension is designed to deliver the best 60-foot times, via computer modeling and analysis of hundreds of quarter-mile runs. In fact, for $97,990 (plus paint and graphics), you get a turn-key, collectable race car that’s eligible for NHRA Stock or Super Stock classes.

It’s even got its own racing series (the Cobra Jet Showdown) and driving school (the Roy Hill Cobra Jet Experience), and Ford says the Mustang Cobra Jet is a record holder in more Stock and Super Stock classes through last season than any other model.

If you want one, now is the time to place an order (for part number M-FR500-CJ) at your local Ford dealer. Orders are filled on a first come, first served basis, and interested buyers who miss this production run will be added to a list for the next model. Production will start in July, with deliveries in time for the 2014 racing season.

Competition Vehicles > Mustang Cobra Jet

Mustang Cobra Jet The Ultimate Turnkey Drag Racing Vehicle.

In 2008 Ford celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the 1968 CJ with the introduction of the new Cobra Jet. It's the ultimate "Parts Car" - Ford Performance Parts, that is. It is literally a production Mustang body, engineered with a carefully chosen set of Ford Performance high performance parts and other components to do one thing: win drag races.

One of the 2008 CJs, owned by Hajek Motorsports, won the 2009 NHRA Winternationals in the hands of John Calvert. Calvert's car sported vintage Rice Holman graphics in honor of Al Joniec's historic '68 Winternationals win. In fact, most of the 2008 Mustang Cobra Jets competed with nostalgia graphic packages mirroring those on famous Mustang CJ drag cars.

So popular is the modern Mustang Cobra Jet, that Ford Performance built 50-car batches in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016.

The legend of the Cobra Jet lives on 50 years later with the 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet from Ford Performance Parts. This iconic Mustang race car is the quickest ever with performance in the mid 8s at over 150 mph.

Just as the Ford Mustang kicked off the pony car era in 1964, the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet raised the bar at the track in 1968. To commemorate the 50th Anniversary, Ford Performance Parts will build 68 units. They will be offered in red or white and will feature options such as special 50th Anniversary Wheels and an exclusive Cobra Jet car cover. Look for one dominating the track near you.

2014 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Priced at $97,990

Pop quiz: what's the most expensive 2014 Ford Mustang model you can buy? The 2014 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, at $54,650? Not quite. The race-ready 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet will set you back at least $97,990.

That's a fair amount of scratch for a Mustang that isn't street legal and cannot be registered for street use, but it does also buy you one helluva drag race machine that's compliant with NHRA's Stock and Super Stock classes. The Mustang's body shell is stripped of all unnecessary equipment in order to save weight and optimize weight distribution, and fitted with a roll cage, Recaro buckets, and unique suspension hardware. Although we drooled over a Cobra Jet concept last year that boasted a twin-turbocharged form of the Mustang GT's 5.0-liter V-8, production 2014 Mustang Cobra jet models continue to utilize a 5.0-liter V-8 with a Whipple 2.9-liter supercharger bolted on top.

What, exactly, is new for 2014? In truth, very little. Although prior Mustang Cobra Jets were also offered in naturally aspirated forms, the 2014 model is only offered as a supercharger. 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet cars gain an all-new 3-speed transmission, a parachute mount for those planning on exceeding 150 mph, and the choice of two new colors, including flat black and the loud Gotta Have-It Green hue shown here.

As we already noted, Ford says 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet pricing begins at $97,990, excluding paint and graphic items. As usual, Ford plans on only building 50 examples for the 2014 model year, and availability is first-come, first-serve. Any excess customers will be placed on a waiting list for a subsequent Cobra Jet production runs. Customers will confirm their options with Ford Racing in April, and production should run between July and October 2013.

In 2008, Ford Racing introduced its purpose-built drag-racing Mustang to honor the 40th anniversary of the original 1968 Mustang Cobra Jet’s win at the NHRA Winternationals. Only 50 were built for 2008, but the modern Cobra Jet program proved so popular that it returned in subsequent years, including 2014. The Gotta-Have-It Green Cobra Jet offered here is number 36 of the 50 built for 2014. Priced new at $97,990 under Ford Racing part number M-FR500-CJ, the 50 Cobra Jets started life as lightweight 2014 Mustang bodies-in-white before completion in competition trim at Watson Racing. Built for off-road use only in NHRA Stock and Super Stock or NMRA Renegade, the 2014 Cobra Jets were capable of eight-second quarter-mile ETs right from the factory thanks to their supercharged 5.0-liter TiVCT engines, 3-speed race transmissions, and Strange Engineering nine-inch rear ends with 4.88:1 gears. Per its factory build, the suspension geometry is designed for optimum 60-foot times with adjustable struts and shocks, 3-link rear suspension, adjustable Panhard bar, and deleted front sway bar. The extra-cost Gotta-Have-It Green paint is one of only three colors offered for the 2014 Cobra Jet, plus this special competition vehicle has the optional Cobra Jet graphics.
